Ofthemanypercussivedanceformsacrosstheglobe,itiscuriousthatKATHAKfromNorthIndia,LAVANIfromMaharashtra,
KALBELIYAfromRajasthanandFLAMENCOfromSouthernSpain
sharesomanyvisual,rhythmic,andkinestheticsimilarities,evenmorethanotherpercussivedances.
Whilethesecommonalitiespointtosomeverystronghistoricalandculturallinks,
KAAFILA(CaravanOfTheIndianCulture)focusesoneachform'sdistinctheritage,ethos,andaestheticsand
theFUSIONbetweenthem,whichgivesbirthtoanunseen&unheardcreation
GYPSIES-HISTORY/ORIGIN
Theculturalgroupknownas“Gypsy”arethenomadswhooriginallybelongedtotheNorth-WesternpartofIndiawhothousandsofyearsback(14thCentury)leftIndiaandmigratedtowardstheWest.
Rightthroughtheirhistory,thegypsyshavebeencomprisedofmanydifferentgroupsofpeople,absorbingoutsidersand
othercultureswhilemigratingacrosscontinents.ThishasresultedincreatingacollageofgroupscallingthemselvesRoma,Romani,RomanyorGypsy,eachwithdifferingcultures,customs,andlanguages.
Despitetheirdifferences,theydosharecertain
characteristics.Madeupoffourtribesornations,theyareboundtogetherthroughgypsybloodandthroughacommonrootoflanguagethattheyshare.
TheGypsy'salsoholduniversalcharacteristics-theyareextremelyloyaltofamilyandclan

Thousandsofyearsback,deepintheheartofIndia,workwasn’tasabundantasitoncewasinthesmallvillages.ThisdilemmaforcedahandfulofIndianstobecometravellingcraftsmen,blacksmithandentertainers.
Theymovedalongthecountrysideentertaining
villagersatnightandusingtheirskillswithwoodand/ormetalduringtheday.
Therehavebeennumerousstoriesassociatedregardingthemigrationofthegypsies.SomesaytheyescapedfromIndiaduringbattlesinordertosave
themselveswhileotherssaytheywerepresentedasrewardstovariousrulersasslaveswhotookthemalongtodifferentcountries.
However,theDNAstudydoesshowthattheirorigindatesbacktothousandsofyearsagototheNorth-WesternpartofIndiainRajasthan.
KATHAKthenorthIndianpride
TheoriginofKathakistraditionallyattributedtothetravelingbardsofancientnorthernIndia,knownasKathakarsorstorytellers.
ThetermKathakisderivedfromtheVedicSanskritwordKathameaning"story",andkathakainSanskritmeans"hewhotellsastory”
WanderingKathakascommunicatedstoriesfromthegreatepicsandancientmythologythroughdance,songsandmusicinamannersimilartoearlyGreektheatre
Ittransitioned,adaptedandintegratedthetastesoftheMughalcourtsinthe16thand17thcenturyparticularlyAkbar,wasridiculedanddeclinedinthecolonialBritishEra,thenwasrebornasIndiagainedindependenceandsoughttorediscoveritsancientrootsandasenseofnationalidentitythroughthearts.
LAVANItheprideofMaharashtra
Accordingtothetradition,thewordLavaniisderivedfromthewordlavanyawhichmeansbeauty.Itwasperformedforthewarsoldiersinthe18thcentury.ItisbelievedtheiroriginisinthePrakritGathascollectedbyHala.
AlthoughbeginningsofLavanicanbetracedbackto1560s,itcameintoprominenceduringthelaterdaysofthePeshwarule.
Lavaniisacombinationoftraditionalsonganddance,whichparticularlyperformedtothebeatsofDholki,apercussioninstrument.Lavaniisnotedforitspowerfulrhythm.
LavanihascontributedsubstantiallytothedevelopmentofMarathifolktheatreinMaharashtra,southernMadhyaPradeshandNorthKarnataka
KALBELIYAandthefolkfromRajasthan
TheKalbeliadance,performedtocelebrateanyjoyfulmomentinthecommunity,isanintegralpartofKalbeliaculture.TheirdancesandsongsareamatterofprideandamarkerofidentityfortheKalbeliasandtheyrepresentthecreativeadaptationofthiscommunityofsnakecharmerstochangingsocioeconomicConditionsandtheirownroleinruralRajasthanisociety.
Musicanddancearetwoveryimportantaspectsofthefolkloreofanyregion.InRajasthan,songsplayadominantroleinthelifeofthepeople.Theyarenotstrictlysongsandarereferredtoasduha,sorathaetc.Songs,whicharemorepoeticthanmusicalormelodiousarecalledfolkpoetry.Thewordsoffolk-songbecomemeaningfulwhentheyaresaturatedwiththerhythmofmusictowhichtheyhavebeenspontaneouslysetthroughcontinuoususebythepeople.
FLAMENCOTheCultureOfSpain
TheSpanishwordflamencocouldhavebeenaderivativeof"fire"or"flame".Thewordflamencomayhavecometobeusedforfierybehaviour,whichcouldhavecometobeappliedtotheGypsyplayersandperformers.
Flamencoisknownforitsemotionalintensity,proudcarriage,expressiveuseofthearmsandrhythmicstampingofthefeet(oftenconfusedwithtapdanceorIrishdancebutwithacompletelydifferenttechnique).
Inthetwentiethcentury,flamencodancedinformallyatGypsycelebrationsinSpainwasconsideredthemostAuthenticformofflamenco.

• HavingearnedamastersdegreeinPsychology,shehasacquiredamastersdegreeindanceorNrityaAlankarfromGhandharvaMahavidyalaya,Pune.
• An‘A’gradedartistoftheDoordarshanKendra,sheisalsoempanelledwiththeIndianCouncilOfCulturalRelations(ICCR).
• AditihasreceivedthetitleNalandaNrityaNipunfromtheNalandaDance&ResearchAcademy,Mumbai.
• AditiwasakeymemberofthefellowshipprogramcalledOneBeat,whichwasproducedbyBangonaCan’sFoundSoundNation(NY)&whichwasaninitiativeofUSDepartmentsofStatesBureauofEducational&CulturalAffairs.Thiswasaresidency&tourprogramwhereAditihadtheopportunitytocollaboratewith32musiciansfrom21countries.
• Lavani&OdissiaretheotherIndiandanceformsAditispecializesin,andshehasalsoworkedasanactorinvariousprojects.
