ABOUT THE WORK:

In my current ceramic work, I use animals, in particular chimpanzee heads, to symbolize the mysterious, primal aspects of human nature and our fundamental desire for connection. Made of glazed cast clay slip, the heads reference both the internal mental noise we experience (what Buddhists call “monkey mind”), as well as the external cacophony we create as we compete to be heard. For me, this tension raises the question: how do we shift from co-creating noise to truly listening to and connecting with one another?

The glaze choices are inspired by bronze and gun metal, as well as Ming Dynasty blue and white export porcelain.
