On February 15, 2014 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, the President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee presented the International Gandhi Award for the year 2013 to Dr. Vijaykumar Vinayak Dongre and Prof. Guocheng Zhang for making outstanding contribution in the field of leprosy. The function was also attended by the Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari. The International Gandhi Award was instituted by the Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's service and scientific approach towards leprosy. The two awards are given every alternate year to individuals / institutions for making outstanding contribution in the field of Leprosy. Speaking on the occasion, the President highlighted that the need of the hour is to intensify our efforts towards early detection of leprosy cases, provide equitable access to appropriate treatment and integrate leprosy services in the geographically focused areas. He further stated that more than the medical condition, the social stigma attached to the disease is a cause for concern and there is a need to empower those who have been socially discriminated on account of leprosy.

A circular issued by Director Public Health of Maharashtra has directed all the doctors of Maharashtra to issue only typed postmortem reports, while citing directives of Nagpur Bench of Bombay High court in PIL filed by Dr. Indrajit Khandekar. Peeved by the illegible handwriting of medicos, especially in medico-legal reports (MLRs) including clinical forensic & postmortem reports, Dr. Khandekar, who is In-charge Clinical Forensic Medicine Unit (CFMU) and Associate Professor, Dept of Forensic Medicine has approached the High court and prayed for computerization of all MLRs & their generation through Forensic Medical Software. This PIL is based

MGIMS EFFORT BEARS FRUIT: GOVERNMENT OF MAHARASHTRA DIRECTS THE DOCTORS TO ISSUE “TYPED” POSTMORTEM REPORTS

on his detailed study report, which was earlier submitted to the government. He found that illegible handwriting of medicos in forensic reports resulted in delay in deciphering the write-up leading to several problems in dispensing of justice in courts and criminal justice system was being adversely affected. Government's circular further states that it should be seriously noted by all concerned that henceforth, under no circumstances, should handwritten postmortem report be issued. The responsibility of its proper implementation has been fixed on the Civil Surgeons, District Health Officers and in charges of hospitals.

The revolution in Information Technology has given rise to massive sources of information. In order to promote resource sharing among the libraries through the development of a network of libraries, DELNET was established in 1988 as a Metropolitan Area Network in Delhi region. It has now become a major resource sharing Library Network in South Asia. It has about 600 libraries in all states in India and five countries outside India as its Institutional Members. DELNET offers access to about three million books and other documents through a number of union catalogues, union lists and other databases that are accessible through the internet.MGIMS has also participated in this revolution by becoming the member of DELNET. This will provide us an array of facilities and will certainly contribute a lot towards the modernisation of our central library.

CENTRAL LIBRARY INTRODUCES 'DELNET' AT MGIMS

It was indeed a moment of great pride for the Journal of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (JMGIMS) when it went online for the first time since its inception. The publishing of JMGIMS was outsourced to Wolters Kluwer Health and Medknow Publications. This helped create an online portal on www journalonweb.com through which online submission and processing of the articles is done.

ONLINE ISSUE OF JOURNAL OF MGIMS STARTEDAlong with this a website for journal was launched at www.jmgims.co.in. The journal is indexed with EBSCO Publishing's Electronic Databases, Genamics JournalSeek, Global Health, Google Scholar, Health & Wellness Research Center, Health Reference Center Academic, Hinari, Index Copernicus, Indian Science Abstracts, IndMed, MANTIS, MedInd, National Science Library, OpenJGate, SafetyLit , SCOLOAR, SIIC databases, Summon by Serial Solutions and Ulrich's International Periodical Directory. The Annual Social Gathering named “Agni- Ignite the Passion within You” was

held in the month of March 2014. The event was inaugurated by, Shri

Dhirubhaiji and it started off with a very magnificient U-V dance item “Shiv

stuti”. Innovative dances for women empowerment, theme based fashion

shows (Avian, khadi, chess round etc), mute skit, karaoke based solos and self

orchestrated group songs kept the audience spell bound. On the second day

events started with college band followed by sequences of Fashion shows,

Dances and the stick show. Teachers of MGIMS performed on the ramp with the

theme of National integrity which the students highly appreciated. While

preparation of orchestra instruments was going on, once again there was an eye

catching presentation of video projection on side wall of the auditorium in

which historical aspects of the institute and recent events organised by

Student's council 2013-14 were highlighted. Audience went back with the

sweet memories of energetic compering, hospitality, quality presentation and

newer innovative ideas.

We deeply condole the sad demise of four of our own family members- Dr Nevin Mitchell, an under and postgraduate student of MGIMS (1999 batch), Dr Ratnakar Fulzele, Pharmacist, Department of Pharmacology, Dr Rekha Kumari, Postgraduate student of Radiology (2012 batch) and Mr Prabhakar Jachak, Attendant in CSSD department. We pray to God to rest their soul in peace and to give all strength to the family members to bear their loss.
