cinema with passionate zeal, without bothering about playing tothe gallery, so to say. Kasarvalli’sfilms, when released, make a quietentry, much like the man himself,
without any media blitzkrieg. But in a private festival like this, his films gain prominence with anaudience interested in aesthetic, deeply communicative films.

Every film screened at the“Chitrothsava” re-established thatKasarvalli’s films are fresh andcontextual, with a universalappeal. Karnataka not too longago had a rich film culture whenquality cinema was not onlylargely viewed, but debated upon
professionally by film buffs. If such festivals and alliedactivities are held by filmsocieties and other organizationsin different parts of the city, this culture can surely be revived,as amply proved by the Bhavanfestival.

It was an honour to theBhavan that Kasaravalli waspresent on all days of the festival, interacting with the audience withan ease usually not associatedwith professionals of suchinternational standing. By thistoken, it was one of those veryrare occasions when the public
could get to see and mingle with astar, right in their midst.
A documentary, “Imagesand Relfections: A Journey intoAdoor’s Imagery”, on renownedfilmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnanbrought the curtains down on thisone-of-its-kind film event.

Dr. Nagesh S Malavalli,Dean, M.P. Birla Institute ofManagement, Bengaluru, passedaway on August 7, of a heartattack. He was 55.
Dr. Malavalli, a seniorprofessional with both academicand industry experience, had beenthe dean of the institute since2013, prior to which he had beenits principal from 2003 to2013.An engineer with an MBA and aPh.D in finance, Dr. Malavalli hadseveral years of business, teachingand consulting experience. He wasresponsible for leading the M.P.Birla Institute of Management, one of the best B-schools inBengaluru, into an educational
centre with a consistently highacademic performance and highlevel of placement of itsgraduates.
But what particularly setapart Dr. Malavalli was hisfriendliness and endearing attitudetowards his students, which madehim so popular that they wouldthrong his classes, and wait foran opportunity to mingle with him.He believed that every studenthad potential to excel, which theinstitute should tap. He maintaineda certain camaraderie with thestudents, who will miss him themost. His is a void which cannotbe filled, for he was a highlyaccomplished professional whosesimplicity and warmth belied hisachievements and professionalstature.
Rarely does one comeacross such modest persons, who remain untouched by theirsocial or economic status. It is notjust the student community or thefaculty of the institute that will misshim. The Bharaitya Vidya Bhavanconsiders itself impoverished byhis absence, and expresses itsdeep-felt condolences to hisfamily.
