When the member for Aston, Mr Alan Tudge, arrived he was very impressed with the respect and attention of our students. The School Captains Zac and Rhianna, together with the House Captains Amelia and Alex, Divya and Dilon, Molly and Sammy, Lauren and Lachlan and representatives from Junior School Council Harry and Emma, presented the meaning of ANZAC Day and the story of Gallipoli. Following the assembly Mr Tudge, the captains and Junior School Council representatives lay the wreath at the base of the flag pole and planted the lone pine which Mr Tudge donated. On Saturday Zac and Rhianna presented the wreath and represented the school at the ANZAC ceremony at Waterford Lakes Retirement Village. Karoo commemorated ANZAC Day with respect and dignity. Kokoda Track We have been thrilled with the response for classroom stationery and teaching items for the Kokoda schools. Rhianna’s parents Karen and Stephen Little have been boxing up the items and taking them to the No Roads office. We have attached a photo of the first boxes of Kokoda donations that were delivered to the No Roads office on Monday morning. The No Roads staff will take photos of the donations as they are being given to the children and teachers in PNG and Karen will send us a copy. With over 2000 items donated so far, it's been an amazing achievement by the school community. The Little family have kindly agreed to continue to take boxes of items to No Roads as they accumulate. As trekkers leave for the Kokoda track they'll be asked to carry some of the donations with them for distribution, mainly in Kagi. No Roads is happy to take unused items which may have students names on them, so you may recycle from your cupboards. Donations of money are also very much appreciated and enable No Roads to purchase specific items that are required including teaching aids. So, whatever help you are able to provide is appreciated. Road Safety The Knox City Council is patrolling the local area and booking people who have parked in 2 minute drop off zones. The police are also patrolling and have targeted people parking in Disabled Parks without a sticker. Please show your respect and leave the Disabled Park in our school car park for people with the sticker and who need the access. Principal’s Comments

Footy Day Next Monday we have our footy lunch. We will also make it footy dress day for a gold coin donation. These funds will be put towards supporting our World Vision child.

3 /4 Performance Classes are spending much time in practice as they gear up for the 2 big nights on Monday 29 th and Tuesday 30th August at the Rowville SC auditorium. This should be a great event.

Playground The rubber has been laid due to finally having some rain free days. It is just being given time to cure and we hope the equipment will be operational shortly.

Year 3 Tables We’ve had another big week on the times tables front with a number of our students performing brilliantly. 5’s in under 15 seconds were achieved by Keeley, Lauren, Julian, Kyle, Luke, Yara, Regan and Bradley in 3S, Annabelle and Sam in 3JC, Lachlan, Jaylen and John in 3 /4, and Leona and Sam in 3C.

We also commenced our 3’s and Caitlyn and Krispin in 3 /4, Kira, Allison, Josh, Tanner, Rylan and Ozcan in 3JC and Ethan in 3S were the “legends” in great times.

Woolies / Coles The voucher “fundraisers” from both companies are in full swing. We do have boxes in the foyer

for receipts and I note that many people have sent along some already, which is superb. This is a

great opportunity to tap into friends and family who may be happy to support our school. I believe

there is a Karoo box at the Stud Park Woolworths & there is double points this week in that chain

of stores.

Prep Rabbits Over past weeks the preps have had a mother rabbit and her babies in their classrooms. The students have enjoyed seeing the transformation from hairless, blind little things to rapidly growing cute creatures. We have them for next week as well.

Rebel There is a voucher available at the office that some people may like to take advantage of if you

were going to be shopping at Rebel this month. Offer valid until 31/08/11.

Molly On the weekend Molly in 6P had a very nasty bike accident at the BMX track which has resulted in her breaking both wrists, an elbow and sustaining facial injuries. This has required time in hospital and operations and could result in being in plaster for 6 months. Several parents have got together to organise a raffle to raise funds so that a self standing touch

screen can be purchased onto which can be downloaded books and music. Tickets are $1 each

and can be obtained from the Miss Poole’s Year 6 students. The prize has lots of goodies in it

including soaps, chocolates, lollies, golf balls, a yo-yo and skipping ropes. We will draw the raffle

on Monday 15th at assembly.

Toe By Toe Reading Support

In 2013, a reading support program called Toe By Toe was introduced at Karoo Primary School. Students who participated in the one-on-one sessions made tremendous progress with many students completing the full program. The usual method of program delivery is for a tutor to work with a student through a series of exercises for 15-20 minutes 4 times per week. However, we were able to run a very successful program in 2013 by sharing the 4 sessions across different volunteer tutors.

We currently have 18 students in years 5 and 6 who would benefit greatly from being able to complete the program. In order to have all 18 students participate again, we need to call on our generous community to volunteer as tutors.

What is required to be a tutor?

A ‘Working with Children’ check

A spare hour at least once a week

What is provided?

A training workshop

1-3 students to work with on a regular basis

Regular opportunities for volunteers to meet with other tutors and talk, ask questions and clarify task requirements

Who can tutor?

Any parent, grandparent or friend of the school

Volunteers who have previously tutored students-we would love to have you on board again!

If you are interested in finding out more, please complete the tear off slip and drop into the office before Friday 8th May.

This edition we focus on our Visual Arts Program

Rotary Art Show On April 18 and 19, we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to enter into the 41st Annual Knox Rotary Art Show.

We had some artworks by Year 6 students Rhianna, Molly, Jaime and Teagan entered under the banner of Karoo Primary School, but we also supported Teagan to enter her own artwork individually as an independent artist.

We had fantastic feedback from the organisers as well as the judging artist. Teagan especially got a special mention for her individual artwork. She was the youngest entrant in the independent artist category. She was presented with a certificate and won a camera for her work in the independent artist category.

We will make sure we put the artworks up in the main building for all to see.

Well done to all the girls!

Art in Term 1 Over Term 1, Year 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 students got back into the swing of things and were eagerly back creating wonderful and exciting artworks. Here are some examples of what we have done so far.
