Linda SimsResource Center Manager, Atlanta Office

Joined the firm June 16, 1969, and was the first African-American staff member.•

Served on the firm’s Diversity Committee. •

Member of the firm’s Administrative Executive Staff•

Has served as a role model and mentor to Alston & Bird staff members.•

Chaired the firmwide Diversity Task Force since its inception September 2004 through December 2007. • The goal of the Task Force is to support the firm’s commitment to diversity awareness by providing opportunities for understanding and learning through events, recognition and celebration.

Over the past few years, the firm enjoyed many diversity-related programs and speakers in recognition • of Black History month, Hispanic Heritage month, Gay and Lesbian Pride month, Celebrate Diversity month, Women’s History month, Asian Pacific Heritage month, Disability Awareness month and American Indian Heritage month. A sample of the speakers and programs offered firmwide includes:

Doug Jones, prosecutor for the 1963 16th Street Church bombings in Birmingham, Alabama, provided a first- »hand narrative of this significant event in the history of racial prejudice in the United States.

Dora McDonald, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary, spoke about the many events she shared with Dr. King and »Coretta Scott King.

Former CNN anchor Sachi Koto provided an informative presentation on her experiences growing up in the »United States as a first generation Asian American, in recognition of Asian Pacific Heritage month.

The Honorable Betty Weinberg Ellerin, in our New York office, shared her journey as one of the first women in »the legal field, in recognition of Women’s History month.

MSgt. W. T. Simmons, a World War II Tuskegee Airmen veteran shared his experience of being a part of the all »African-American pursuit squadron based in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1941, in recognition of Black History month.

Diversity Initiatives for the Year 2006

Angela Payne JamesPartner, IP-Litigation, Atlanta Office

Chairs the Atlanta Diversity Committee and has served on the committee since 2003. Serves as a member of the Diversity Steering Committee.

Designed and implemented the Diversity Committee Liaison Program, to ensure effective mentoring and encourage candid communication with the Diversity Committee. The program is active in all offices.

As Atlanta Diversity Committee chair, drafted and implemented a strategic plan and allocated and managed funding for diversity conferences, sponsorships, organizations and events to further the firm’s diversity, business development and community service efforts.

Launched a Practice Group Leader initiative to increase awareness of issues facing diverse associates, provided Practice Group Leaders with retention/recruitment tools and increased accountability.

Helped organize and moderate a Summer Associate panel discussion on diversity during the 2006 summer program at the firm.

Served as a panelist for an in-house marketing/business development session to illustrate best practices for successful business development for attorneys.

Participated as a speaker for the Atlanta Legal Recruiters Association’s diversity panel to communicate A&B’s innovative diversity initiatives.

Represented the firm at the Atlanta Legal Diversity Consortium’s Symposium, the American Institute for Managing Diversity’s overview training and serves on the Steering Committee for the State Bar of Georgia Diversity Program.

Serves as a Board member for Hands On Atlanta, and is a leader in facilitating the firm’s successful partnership at Walden Middle School to provide enriched and unique learning experiences that foster academic and character growth.
