On February 4, I was involved in a three-car colli-sion. A woman with a young child in the back seat drove through a red light. I was in the right lane waiting to turn left onto Route 72W in Manahawkin, and a man was doing the same in the lane to my left. An ordinary event that occurs hundreds of times each day. Yet, on that sunny morning, the world of three drivers and one very young passenger changed. Forever.

My car has since been repaired and returned. “Like it never even happened.” But, it did. And, in order to heal from anything we experience, be it a car crash, an ended friendship, or a death of a pet or a person we love, we must honor the process of grieving.

Grieving is a response to loss. Any loss. And, to grieve well, is to honor the loss. Gratitude is an equally impor-tant part of the process. Gratitude for the opportunity to

heal. As part of the healing, I have returned to the tow-ing shop and the collision shop to thank the people for their part in the process of recovering and repairing the car. I have thanked the rental car people for their empa-thy and help in the process, too. I have not yet returned to the hospital and the police station. Soon.

As I continue to forgive myself for any time I have driven with less than utmost attention to driving, I learned anew, on that Monday morning, that we are all connected by our deeds.

“We carve out the world with words; we sculpt our world with deeds.”

Be HappyMotivation

Sunshine & Happiness

I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with sunshine.

I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.

I will do something positive to improve my health. I will get up off of the couch!

Under the Boardwalk

One of my fondest memories as a child on vacation in Lavallette, was of course, the little narrow boardwalk that ran along the beach. Digging in the sand under the boardwalk making my own little hideaway was my favorite place to hang out while hiding from the hot sun. I remember walking along the boardwalk to go to the little shop that sold straws full of sugar. My sister and I would slowly walk home sipping sugar out of those big straws.

It is funny the things you remember. I must have been around eleven years old and my sister was six. We stayed in the upstairs apartment in a tiny Cape Cod style house and my cousins stayed in the house next door. It must have been brutally hot but I don’t remember that. It had to have been crowded in that little apart-ment but I couldn’t tell you how I felt about that. All I remember is playing under and jumping off the boardwalk. I remember the sea breeze and the huge ocean. And like it was yesterday, I can feel that warm happiness. SUMMER; how wonderful. Long days and exciting nights. How fun it was to walk the boardwalk at night. Roller coaster rides on the Seaside boardwalk with their blinking lights and screaming riders always make me smile. I was way too afraid to ride that roller coaster. Whirling sounds from spinning the lucky wheels will always remain in my memory. When I was a teenager, we would win cigarettes! Imagine that? A young me and my first boyfriend used to watch the fireworks on Wednesday nights on that old boardwalk.

There is building of the new boardwalk taking place right now. I wonder what it will be like. Will new memories mingle with old memories? We tend to remember what we want to remember. We stitch old memories together with threads of love, leaving out torn scraps when patching our past pieces with our new memories.

Lisa

Finally it is spring. All winter we waited for spring to come and we would finally be happy. BUT, it is not that easy. Weather helps but does not ensure happiness.

Happiness comes from within. (and sometimes a little chocolate doesn’t hurt). Your mind controls your happiness. Think happy thoughts, talk to happy people, do things that make you happy and you will be happy.

When you wake up in the morning, schedule your day to include things you enjoy. A walk on the beach, a favorite food, an afternoon nap or a funny TV show.

Keep bad thoughts out of your head. Sometimes it just takes a wish to make you happy. I wish everyone was as happy as I am. I work at being happy every day. I think about happiness all day long.

Happiness is attainable. Just think it!

Happiness is .....a chocolate cupcake.Sunshine is ....my grandsons smiles.

Happiness is ....a big bank account.Sunshine is ....dogs running on the beach.

Happiness is ....Easter egg hunts.Sunshine is ......flip-flops.

Happiness is......a first kiss.Sunshine is .......growing old together.

Happiness is .......BBQ’s in July.Sunshine is ..........Grandmas potato salad

Happiness is ...sunsets over the bay.Sunshine is ......ice cold Margaritas.

Happiness is.....a kiss from your mom.Sunshine is......a comforting hug from Dad.

I grew up in Silverton. Silver Bay Elementary was where I learned how to read, write and to be a cool kid. By Intermediate East, I was wearing concert tees, moc-casins and black eyeliner. I gave my Dad many grey hairs and my Mom lots of smirks and eye rolls. When I finally got to High School North I was pretty full of myself and knew I was the most important person in existence. By senior year my friends and I were having crazy teenage weekends in Seaside Heights-croozin’ the strip, riding the rides, walking up and down the board-walk, tanning on the beach, jumping in the waves and eating funnel cakes. I loved living in Toms River! After finally growing up and having a family of my own, I came to realize the hell I put my parents through (yes, I apologized thoroughly). After seeing the devastation of my beloved Seaside Heights, I can only hope and pray our beaches and board-walk come back to their original charm so my grandson can make his own memories in this beautiful seaside town.

Too Funny

Just Ask DarlaDear Darla,A friend of mine told me a secret about another friend. The other friend would be extremely upset if she knew this secret is out. Should I tell her that I know her secret?

Tangled Web

Dear Tangled,

First of all, secrets are never kept very long. Everyone loves to gossip. Some secrets are better kept secret which means NO ONE should be told! Once you tell a secret, you can assume it will be whispered to someone else and someone else and so on.

Simple secrets like, she dyes her hair or lies about her weight can be ignored. Everyone knows because they can see the truth with their own eyes.

Complex secrets that include innocent people are a serious matter. Secrets that will damage her reputation must be brought to her attention.

When you tell someone that you know a hurtful secret about them you must use all the compassion that you have. They will probably be angry at you for telling them, but understand that they are embarrassed. Let them know that you are there for them and that your intentions were to help them.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were truly recycled. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. This was to ensure that public property, (the books provided for our use by

the school) was not defaced by our scribbling. Then, we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags. We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. Back then, we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged

a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. We enjoyed each other’s company as we all watched the only television in the house. We were a close family.

The day after his wife disappeared in a kayaking accident, an Anchorage man

answered his door to find two grim faced Alaska State Troopers. "We're sorry Mr. Wilkens, but we have some information about your wife," said one of the troopers. "Tell me! Did you find her?" Wilkens asked. The troopers looked at each other. One said, "We have some bad news, some good news, and some really great news. Which would you like to hear first?" Fearing the worst, the ashen Mr. Wilkens said, "Give me the bad News first." The trooper said, "I'm sorry to tell you, sir, but this morning we found your wife's body in Kachemak Bay." "Oh my God!," said Wilkens. Swallowing hard, he

asked, "What's the good news?" The trooper continued, "When we pulled her up, she had 12 twenty pound King crabs and 6 good-sized Dungeness crabs clinging to her, and we feel you are entitled to a share in the catch." Stunned, Mr. Wilkens demanded, "If that's the good news, then what's the great news?" The trooper smiled and said, "We're gonna pull her up again tomorrow."

Say what? Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes,so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous. Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the drunks out

for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom; “of holding a wake”.
