The book of 1 Corinthians, in part, addresses the tendency in people to exalt re-ligious leaders. The believers in Corinth were both elevating and arguing over who– whether Paul, Peter, or Apollos - was the best. (1 Cor. 1:11-12, 4:6) That ten-dency is nothing new. It happened then. It happens now.

A church member once came to me for counsel from God about what car he wasto buy! He apparently thought I had divine insight about cars. “Why are you askingme?” I asked. “Because you’re my pastor,” he replied. I told him I had bought myshare of clunkers and to ask a mechanic!

Paul states plainly that he, Peter, and Apollos were just ministers (common ser-vants) of the kind that God gives anyone who believes. He tells them none of them“ain’t nuthin” (verse 7). God is the one who does the work.

So if I ever dress in a tall hat and a satin white robe with blue and gold trim, if I re-quire that you bow to me, kiss my ring and call me “His Holiness Pastor Snyder”,please call the men in white coats. And I don’t mean clergymen.
