She is currently employed as a sustainability engineer, mainly working on commercial construction projects. She applied to the Energy Institute for chartered status as this is an important recognition in engineering consultancy, chartered status is highly valued by our clients. Her areas of interest are renewable energy and low carbon design in new buildings and in particular optimised passive design to reduce requirements for heating, lighting and cooling. Past projects include Manchester City Stadium, BBC studios at Paradise Street, Liverpool; and the NV buildings at Salford Quays. Whilst working at WYG Engineering, she is also seeking investment for a water saving device that she has developed in my spare time which can save up to 30% of household water. She hold several patents on the design. Energy users are becoming energy generators, sharing energy with their neighbours, and she is enjoying working in the construction industry during a time of great change. Bo Wang, PhD, C.Eng, MCIBSE, LEED AP Senior Environmental Analyst, Foster + Partners As an environmental analyst and designer in the Foster + Partners Engineering team, Bo continually promotes sustainability in each project in which she is involved, apart from optimize building design. She also focuses on sustainable water and waste strategies, renewable energy, etc. She is specialised in solar, daylight, energy, thermal and airflow aspects of the built environment; advising and supporting design teams in the integration of environmental concept design and the assessment of building performance. The ultimate goal is to maximize the passive design potential through integrated design collaboration with architects to achieve optimized building designs, with minimised energy consumption and

She also focuses on sustainable water and waste strategies, renewable energy, etc. She is specialised in solar, daylight, energy, thermal and airflow aspects of the built environment; advising and supporting design teams in the integration of environmental concept design and the assessment of building performance. The ultimate goal is to maximize

the passive design potential through integrated design collaboration with architects to achieve optimized building designs, with minimised energy consumption and environmental impact, meanwhile creating better working environment, promoting human health and wellbeing. She has always believed that it is beneficial to build a link between academia and industry. She studied Building Services Engineering at Tsinghua University in China, followed by four years of PhD research work in natural ventilation design at the University of Nottingham. She is now able to implement my knowledge on real projects. She has also continued to engage in academia, by attending conferences, publishing papers, and giving lectures at Universities to introduce students to the latest best practices in the Built environment, and to inspire more students to contribute to the engineering profession.

Gemma Doré – CEng, QuinetiQ

Gemma graduated from Imperial College, London in 2005 with an MEng in Aeronautical Engineering. Gemma chose a career in engineering because of her love of solving problems. She wanted a career in an industry that was continually evolving and that could offer up new and exciting challenges every day. She was particularly interested in the evaluation and test of aircraft, rather than design, as she wanted to be involved with the end product and see it make its transition into service.

Gemma joined QinetiQ in 2005 and spent her early career working predominantly on rotary wing platforms such as Merlin, Chinook, Sea King and Apache and was involved in a number of trials on platforms such as Merlin and Harrier. After graduation from the Empire Test Pilots’ School

(ETPS) in 2010 as a Flight Test Engineer (FTE), Gemma went on to become the lead Aircraft Test and Evaluation Centre (ATEC) FTE for the Chinook HC Mk4 programme. Following several other test and evaluation activities on Chinook HC Mk4 and 6, she was seconded to Air Support to assist in evaluating the UK RC-135 (Airseeker) and was the lead FTE for the early flight test planning activities.

Gemma has recently started a new role as an FTE tutor at ETPS. In this role, she is responsible for tutoring trainee FTEs and Test Pilots on the planning, conduct and reporting of aircraft evaluation and test activities. This includes delivery of lectures, practical assessments and tutorial sessions, in addition to marking reports.

Andrea Seedhouse, CEng, Sabic

Andrea graduated in 2008 with a First Class MEng in Chemical Engineering with Industrial Experience from the University of Manchester, completing an Industrial Placement year with Chevron at their Pembroke Refinery. As recognition for services to the Chemical Engineering Society she was awarded the Undergraduate of the Year Distinguished Achievement Medal.

After graduation she joined SABIC UK Petrochemicals in Teesside as a Process Engineer, firstly working on upgrade

projects to a world scale Ethylene Cracker and then moved to provide process engineering support for SABIC’s logistics operations. In 2012 she was appointed Technical Plant Manager for SABIC’s North Tees Riverside Logistics area, including 4 cryogenic liquefaction plants, storage tanks, an effluent treatment plant and 4 jetties with a throughput of over 6 million tonnes per year of hydrocarbon. In 2014 Andrea was Commissioning Manager for a £6.5 million upgrade to one of the liquefaction plants.

Andrea is a STEM Ambassador and is on SABIC’s Education Liaison Panel. She regularly hosts work experience students, facilitates school visits and participates in the whynotchemeng scheme. In 2013 she launched a Young SABIC Professionals hub to host monthly networking and training events for graduates at the UK site. As chair of the

Teesside IChemE Early Career Panel, Andrea organises technical talks, site tours and social events.

Sioned Owen, CEng, Senior Design Engineer, Dyson LtdAfter receiving an unconditional offer to study at the Glasgow School of Art, Sioned graduated in 2007 with a first class Masters in Product Design Engineering. She started her career as a Junior Designer at consultancy Design Reality Ltd where she engineered respiratory and medical devices. During her time there she worked alongside the BBC, NHS Innovation and also designed injection devices for Sanofi Aventis, the mechanisms of which were protected by seven patents. In late 2010 Sioned moved to Japan and joined Hokkaido Tracks Ltd as a Project Manager. Here in her spare time she absorbed the culture and studied Japanese whilst developing and

testing the Camera Demon helmet mount.Returning to the UK in 2011 Sioned founded White Horizon Ltd and set up distribution channels through Proporta Ltd to enable the sales of Camera Demon at Dixons Travel. Shortly afterwards Sioned started working at Dyson Ltd. First placed within the design team for environmental control, she quickly moved up into New Product Innovation and led innovative new projects in the broader remit of the environmental control category.Having engineered and brought to market six new environmental control products she is now a Senior Design Engineer at Dyson Ltd. Currently category lead of global reliability for all environmental control and airblade products she is advising designers and engineers on how to engineer quality into products. Presented with the Kathbert Trophy in 2014 by the iED Sioned was recognised for not necessarily being at the pinnacle of her career, she had made a significant and developing contribution to design which had led to a tangible advantage to commerce and society. Sioned continues to drive innovation within her role and like most designers, her best work is still to come.

Helen West MSc CEng CEnv MSOEHelen is a Project Manager employed by Lloyd’s Register in Aberdeen, currently working within the energy department delivering Integrity Engineering Services. Lloyd’s Register Foundation helps to protect life and property by supporting engineering related education, public engagement and the application of research.

Helen’s pathway to becoming a Chartered Engineer has not been conventional, but she now demonstrates a passion for a myriad of engineering disciplines. She continues in the support of other female engineers, both graduate and non-graduate, to achieve their

professional goals. Helen studied with the University of East London to achieve her MSc in Architecture (Advanced Environmental Energy Studies) and also has an MSc in Engineering and Management through Portsmouth University. She has an avid interest in innovative technologies used in buildings in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint. Her passion to help other women to succeed is compounded by her experiences as an engineer who worked on the shop-floor through to higher management.

Helen has recently left the Army as an Engineering Officer after having completed twenty-three years of service. During this time she has completed several Operational tours of duty as an automotive engineer and served on major global exercises as subject Matter Expert in her field. There is no doubt that during her service Helen inspired, motivated and developed the confidence of more junior engineers and soldiers. Operating at the very highest levels throughout her career, Helen embodies the ideal role model for young engineers as well as soldiers. For her sustained commitment, loyalty, to The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, army and Tri service, partnered with outstanding leadership shown continually, she was presented with the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal (MSM), which recognised her as an outstanding soldier.

Having recently become an innovative speaker for businesswomen in Suffolk, which has been greatly received, her ‘No Glass Ceilings’ talk covers being an engineer, soldier, mother, student and wife. She talks about the challenges of how to succeed in a predominantly male world and gives advice on personal strategic planning. Also, her recent article in The East Anglia Times on ‘Women who do things differently’, was used by the military as a positive advertisement for women and diversity in the military.

Helen has decided to use her path in engineering to inspire others. She would like to replicate a talk she received herself at school by a female Chartered Engineer, which subsequently inspired her to become a Chartered Engineer.

Natalie Cropp, CEng, Senior Engineer, Tony Gee and Partners LLPNatalie started her undergraduate degree in 1999 at University of Surrey where she studied for an  MEng in Civil Engineering.  The course was 5 years, and the middle year was spent on placement in South Africa working on the design and construction of tailings dams for the mining industry.  Following her undergraduate degree Natalie undertook an Engineering Doctorate in Environmental Technology, which she completed in 2010.  Her research was in decision support for contaminated land professionals and involved a mix of decision making psychology

alongside technical engineering.  Natalie is currently developing her career working within the geotechnical group at Tony Gee, with a focus on the rail sector covering a wide range of projects.   Aside from traditional engineering Natalie also has an active interest in environmental and sustainability issues and is Environmental Manager at Tony Gee.  Within this role she is currently working on developments to sustainable design tools for engineers and looking at ways to further embed the principles of sustainability into the company systems.  Outside of her main job role Natalie is a STEM Ambassador and irregularly involved in careers events for local schools.

Magdalena Nowak-Coventry is currently working at TWI Ltd, managing a range of projects from the mechanical and fracture testing of materials to engineering critical assessment of structures. Through her higher education and career she has developed a deep understanding of different engineering disciplines. Her research has involved extensive laboratory work in casting and mechanical properties testing. This covered the whole process from producing the samples to microstructure testing. Her Master’s degree from the Silesian University of Technology in Poland gave her a good understanding of industrial engineering, mechanics, robotics and simulation and led to further her interest in science. During her second Master’s degree at Brunel University she gained practical knowledge of design engineering with usage of CAD software as well as different manufacturing systems. In recognition of her work, she was awarded a full scholarship for a research PhD position at Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST).As a result of her PhD research she has developed a new grain refiner based on Niobium for Al-Si alloys used in production of engines and pistons. Subsequently, her supervisor and Magdalena have been able to patent the technology and they have had significant interest from the automotive industry regarding its application.

Marie Karlson Carruthers, CEng, Doosan

Marie Karlsson Carruthers gained a BSc in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 from Jönköping University in Sweden.  During her studies she worked part time at the Swedish Foundry Association and starting taking a real interest in materials and metallurgy.  She decided to pursue materials further and in 2001 she came to the UK and gained an MSc in Materials Technology from Napier University in Edinburgh.She started her employment with Doosan in 2003 when she joined the Non Destructive Testing (NDT) department with NDT development and also spent a lot of time at the UK

Nuclear Power plants working with specialised inspections of safety critical components.After a few years in the NDT department she moved on to work with large scale component testing which (often destructively) tests a range of equipment such as aerospace engine casings and subsea components to verify their properties. At this time she also started supporting the Doosan Babcock roadshows travelling to customer sites talking to them about new technologies.Today Marie is a technology integration manager in the Doosan Babcock North Region where she supports our site construction teams and their energy customers with the integration and implementation of new technologies and services to help maintain or extend the life of their assets.  This is a varied and diverse role across several different engineering disciplines and sectors.

2014 Winner

Elaine Greaney, CEng, Quinetic

Elaine graduated from Oxford University with a Masters degree in Physics. She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Management from the University of Bath and became a Chartered Engineer with the IET in October 2013. Elaine has worked for the Space department at QinetiQ in Farnborough since starting as a new graduate in 2004. For the first 4 years she was the Operations Engineer for an experimental remote sensing satellite called TopSat - capturing imagery of the Earth to support disaster relief projects. In recognition of her achievements in this role Elaine was a finalist in the Women of

the Future awards 2007 (science & technology category), and was awarded the Royal Aeronautical Society Geoffrey Pardoe Space Award and Silver Team Award. In 2008 she joined the Electric Propulsion team and began working to develop cutting edge ion engines for interplanetary spacecraft such as the European Space Agency’s BepiColombo mission to Mercury. Her current role is as the Mechanical and Propulsion Team Leader - leading a team of system engineers who specialise in the design of new rocket technologies. Elaine has presented several papers at international space conferences and events organised by IET regional branches. She has a particular interest in STEM outreach – regularly supporting careers events at local schools and authoring articles published in educational magazines such as the BIS’s “Voyage” and the national STEM centre’s “Catalyst”. Elaine has been interviewed several times for national newspapers, regional television news and the Teacher’s TV channel in support of aerospace careers segments.
