    RABBI'S MESSAGEBy Rabbi Michael Gold

    2

Dear Friends, I sent the following Hanukkah – parshat miketz message to the congrega-tion and the long list of people who get my weekly message. It received a number of comments and I know that someone reposted it on Facebook. Hanukkah is past, but the message I share about pushing away darkness is more relevant than ever. I hope you enjoy.

There is a popular Israeli Hanukkah song for children. The words begin in Hebrew Banu Hosech Legaresh “We have come to chase away the darkness – in our hands are small lights. Flee darkness, go forth blackness. Flee before the light.” I believe the words of this simple Hanukkah song say it all. The song tells what Hanukkah is really all about. The Talmud asks the question “What is Hanukkah?” It goes on to tell the story of the miracle of the oil which lasted eight days when there was only enough for one day. One senses in this Rabbinic legend an attempt to rephrase an old celebration of a military victory by Judah Maccabee. We should celebrate not the military success against the evil Syrian-Greeks but the God’s miracle of the oil. The Rabbis ordained that every Hanukkah we read the verses from the prophet Zachariah, “Not by might and not by power but by my spirit says the Lord.” (Zechariah 4:6) The Rabbis never cared much for the Maccabees or their military victory. Perhaps that is the reason why the book of Maccabees never made it into the holy canon. And perhaps that is the reason why the true history of Hanukkah is so confusing. So what is the real story of Hanukkah, the story behind the story? I believe that it is no coincidence that Hanukkah falls around the time of the winter solstice, the shortest and dark-est day of the calendar year. (The solstice actually falls on December 21; Hanukkah is a bit early this year. I believe it is no coincidence that Christmas, the Christian festival of lights, falls around the same time.) I believe that the true story of Hanukkah is how light can push away darkness. I believe it is a story of how hope can push away despair. I believe it is a story of how, when life appears dark, when blackness seems to overwhelm us, we should not give up. Even a little candle, if that lights another candle, if that lights a series of candles, can push away the blackness. This idea is central to the portion we read in the Torah. At the beginning of the portion Joseph is languishing in prison for a crime he did not commit. He has been forgotten. Then Joseph is pulled from prison, interprets Pharaoh’s dreams, and is given responsibility for gathering food in Egypt during the days of plenty to feed the people during the days of famine. At the end of the portion Joseph is the second most powerful person in Egypt. Andrew Lloyd Webber, in his Broadway retelling of the Joseph story, has Joseph singing from prison “Close every door to me, hide all the world from me. Bar all the windows and shut out the light.” But even from prison Joseph sings of hope. Hanukkah is about using little candles, little flames of light, to push away the darkness. It is about moving from despair to hope. That is why Hanukkah is so important at this time. We live in dark times. As the poet Yeats wrote, “Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.” Radical Jihadists have decided that it is okay to kill countless innocent people in their fight to establish their Islamic regime. Whether in San Bernardino, CA, Paris, France, or in the heart of Jeru-salem, innocents are being killed. The Angel of Death has been loosened on the world. The darkness seems to be spreading. The theme of Hanukkah is that we cannot allow the darkness to overwhelm us. We must light candles, candles of hope, and place those candles in our windows for everyone to see. In following the wisdom of the great sage Hillel, we must increase the number of candles each night, adding to the amount of light. We must use one candle to light another candle, spread-ing the light from person to person. We must react to the evil in the world not with more evil but with goodness, we must counter the hatred with love. Deep in our hearts we must believe that the darkness will not last forever. To repeat a quote attributed to John F. Kennedy, “It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”Shalom,Rabbi Michael Gold

CANTOR'S MESSAGEBy Cantor Jonathan Angress Yahrzeit

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative. All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle. Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.

Sunday in the Park with George, Victor/Victoria, Nine, Cyrano, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, Sweet Charity, and Rock of Ages. What do these 8 Broadway shows have to do with each other? The storylines of each are so diverse and completely different from each other. The music styles from each are of a different genre. So what do an 80’s rock bar, a 19th century French painter, a cursed prince, and the boy who wouldn’t grow up have in common? That I can tell you in one (but actually two) word(s): Paul Schoeffler.

Here is Paul’s official bio: “Born in Montreal, Canada, Paul spent his early years in Toronto before moving to England with his family where he had his schooling and subsequently lived in Belgium where he attended the University of Brussels for French. He then moved to California where he received a BA in English at UC Berkeley and began study-ing voice at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Moving to Pittsburgh to study voice and drama at Carnegie Mellon, he graduated with honors and headed to NYC where he has been working professionally since. On Broadway he has been seen as Hertz in Rock of Ages (cast album), Vittorio Vidal opposite Christina Applegate in Sweet Charity (cast album), Hook in Peter Pan opposite Cathy Rigby (cast album, filmed for A&E), Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast. Le Bret in Cyrano, Nine, Victor/Victoria and Sunday in the Park with George. Numerous Off Broadway appearances include Wintertime at Second Stage Theatre opposite Marsha Mason, the world premiere of No Way to Treat a Lady (cast album), The Fantasticks, Much Ado About Nothing and The Cherry Orchard. National tours include Javert in Les Miserables and Sheldrake in Promises/Promises. Regionally he has performed leading roles extensively, including The Count in the world premiere of Phantom by Yeston/Kopit (cast album), Flaminio Scala in the premiere of The Glorious Ones by Ahrens/Flaherty at PPT, Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady and Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha among other roles as part of seven seasons at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia (2 Barrymore nomina-tions for best actor) and seven seasons at Sacramento Music Circus. Other theatres where he has performed lead roles include Papermill, Goodspeed, The Huntington Theatre in Boston and The Repertory Theatre of St Louis. Paul has also had an extensive voice-over career, having worked for NBC, CBS, CNN, ESPN, The Oxygen Network, four seasons as multiple characters on Courage the Cowardly Dog for The Cartoon Network and extensive commercial campaigns for among others, Shell Oil, Amstel Light, Campbells, Lysol and Canon. TV appearances include Person of Interest, Law and Order, Midnight Caller, All My Children and Guiding Light. A member of the New York Singing Teachers' Association (NYSTA) Paul also teaches voice and coaches privately and has done extensive concert work including Broadway by the Year and Broadway Unplugged at Town Hall in NY, Broadway Ballyhoo at Feinstein‘s, Broadway in Bryant Park and Symphony Silicon Valley among others.” I am proud to announce that Paul will be this year’s guest performer for our spring Jewish Broadway concert. As you can see he has a very large resume with a vast amount of experience performing on Broadway and regionally. Please mark your calendars for Sunday March 6, 2016! Both Paul and I are very much looking for-ward to presenting a fun night of music, acting, and shtick! And who knows, we may end up hearing some songs from the roles that Paul has played on Broadway!Todah V’Zimrah,Cantor Jonathan Angress

It is an honor to be installed as President of Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek. I am proud to be a member of this vibrant synagogue, one that I truly believe to be the pre-eminent Conservative temple in Broward County. From our various religious services and social programming, to our schools, youth groups, Sisterhood and Men’s Club, we offer something for everyone. If you have thought of becoming more involved but haven’t quite made the leap, I invite you to follow Nike’s advice and

“just do it.” Joining a committee might be a good place to start. We have several committees looking for new members, including Membership, Early Childhood, Ways and Means, and Hazak. Maybe attending a weekday minyan or a Shabbat service is more your thing. Our services are traditional, yet egalitarian, and our regular service-goers have estab-lished a camaraderie that has forged lasting friendships. We are looking forward to getting to know you too! Social events are always on the calendar. Join us for Karaoke Night, Mitzvah Day, Sisterhood or Men’s Club events for an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Our complete calendar can be found on our website, www.tbtst.org. On behalf of the Officers and Board, I’d like to thank Nancy Marks Small for her tireless dedication and service as TBTST’s President the past two years. Nancy selflessly devoted her time and energy for the betterment of our temple, and we are all grateful. I look forward to working with all of you toward fulfilling our common goals, as we continue to make our temple thrive. I welcome your input. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 954-478-1284.

    In Your Will?

The synagogue’s role begins at birth and continues with-out interruption throughout the entire course of our lives. By remembering the synagogue in our wills, we can do our part to assure future generations that their religious home will be there to serve. We depend upon more than just dues alone to sustain all that we do. If we are concerned about the future of Judaism, we must project its influence and our influ-ence into the future. Few memorials are more worthy than those provided by an en-dowment to TBTST through a bequest. Your legacy can reflect everything that is most im-portant and meaningful to you. You can declare where your funds might be used – to supply the Hebrew School, for example, or to support one of TBTST’s designated funds. We all want TBTST to be a spiritual home for genera-tions to come, just as it has been for you and your family. Let us ensure the future of our congregation and help it grow and serve our people.

Early Childhood NewsSydney Berlin, Early Childhood Director

Hanukkah has come and gone and a New Year has begun. With the start of a new year brings the opportunity to become better or do more. Better people, better parents, better plan-ners, better whatever the case may be; it allows us a window of opportunity to look at our lives, and make change, to better ourselves in whatever capacity we feel is needed to be the best we can possibly be.

If some of your goals are to become more involved in the programs offered at TBTST, more specifically, our Early Childhood Programs, then you’re in luck! We have some great January programs coming up that we would love you all to be a part of. We are having a Winter themed Tot Shabbat January 15th. We’ll sing songs, dance and welcome Shabbat. There may even be a few “snow ball fights,” you never know. After, we will enjoy hot cocoa and cookies. We hope you can make it, and as always, please feel free to bring friends! Our next session of enrichments begins the first week in February. Our enrich-ment classes are open to any child from 2-5 years old. Classes run from 3-4pm. We have a wide variety of classes ranging from wood working, karate, soccer, dance/cheer, Spanish, gymnastics, cooking, art and more! If you are interested in enrolling your child, registration forms are located at the ECC office. Our Socialites program meets weekly from 6-7:30pm on Tuesday nights. It’s open to any child in K, 1st or 2nd grade. This social club is packed full of activities such as crafts, games, field trips and much more! The program started in October and runs until May. Registration is ongoing if interested. If you would like more information about any of the above mentioned programs, please call the ECC office at 954-722-9537. We just had our book fair and Hanukkah Show. We had many families shopping and mingling at the fair while enjoying an interactive Hanukkah show, starring some of the TBTST teachers.

Be on the look out! Registration for the 2016-2017 school year will begin in Feb-ruary! We will have early bird enrollment discounts available for those families who would like to register early and take advantage of the savings!

Have you noticed our upgraded playground? When you come into the building on your way into the sanctuary, please peer out the etched windows and see our newly renovated play area.

You'll notice the grassy green surface covering the cushioned protective under layer, insuring that our children can play safely.

Since our playground is used year round, it gets lots of use. Unfortunately our renovation costs ran higher than initially expected because the ground needed to be properly prepared.

This would be a wonderful opportunity to make a contribution to help underwrite the cost of the playground renovation and support our children.

Please drop off your donations in the main office and mark "PLAYGROUND" in the memo line. All donations will be greatly appreciated!

    Tu B’Shevat

This year, Tu B’Shevat is celebrated at the end of January and while this is a holiday that is remembered more in Israel, we do acknowledge its existence even here in North America and around the world. It is like a Jewish Arbor Day and it falls on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat. Here it is considered a winter holiday but in Israel, it is a time when the first buds appear on the trees. Many people celebrate this holiday with a special seder, a cer-

emony celebrating the fruits of Israel not unlike the Pesach seder which is a ritual meal. The seder has 4 cups of wine or grape juice- dark red, light red, pink and white-to represent the changes in the seasons. They eat fruits and nuts mentioned in the bible, like dates and figs. They also try to eat different kinds of fruit including those with coverings on the outside, like oranges, those with pits such as peaches and olives and those that can be eaten inside and outside like raisins. While it is still winter, it is kind of nice to think about the earth blooming again.Today we also think about Tu B’Shevat in which Jews celebrate the gift of our world-the earth, the seas, and the air- and our responsibility to preserve and care for it. For too many years, people have used the earth’s resources carelessly. We have destroyed, wasted and polluted and although this is a worldwide problem, not just a Jewish problem, many Jews are turning to Tu B’Shevat as a special day on which to remember that we must work to preserve the world and that we must teach and remind others to do the same. On the day of this holiday, when you wake up or even when you go to bed, go outside and enjoy the grass and flowers, the sky and the earth, the trees and their branches, and the sights and sounds of the outdoors. Then, listen to the quiet and go over to a tree and wish it a happy birthday. Perhaps after that, you can even decide to hug the tree and enjoy the moment even for a few seconds. Happy Tu B’Shevat.

Hanagev Class of 2016...The Importance of USYby: Sammie Gaynor

Being a senior has a different weight in USY than it does in other clubs. We’re all guilty of résumé-stuffing—filling our schedules up with extra-curricular activities that we think will look good on our college applications. College, and the aforementioned applications, is a very large presence in our lives around this time of year. We are getting accepted, wait-listed, and denied

while our friends are going through the same process. But with all the excitement of finding out where you are going to be for the next four years, it is also crucial to appreciate the best parts of this year and the last few years. USY is not just a résumé filler. We all participate in USY because we love doing it. We enjoy the conventions we attend, the prayers we lead, and all the friends we get to make along the way. More than any other club, USY is a way for teens with a common background and purpose to get together and have fun. Unfortunately, universities don’t have their own USY chapters. But that doesn’t mean that USY should disappear from our lives completely. Though we can’t have USY in college, we can still have our friends there with us, even if they attend a different school. It takes a lot of work when you don’t live in the same city or even the same state, but keeping in touch is worth the effort. Whether a Gator or a ‘Nole, maintaining USY friends is important through the craziness of college life. A simple “hello” text every once in a while or a late night FaceTime is a great way to show that you still care about another person. We all come from the same place with a common background and we deserve to keep the friends that we made during this time of high school. That being said, there is still a lot of USY left to enjoy for the year. If you’re a senior in USY, you should definitely join the Hanegev Class of 2016 page on Face-book. It’s a great way to keep in touch with people not in our chapter and people are often known to post cute and positive things on the page. So, while you all come up with your senior quotes for regional convention in the spring make sure to ap-preciate being in USY with all of your friends as the year rolls along, I know I will.

    TBTST SISTERHOODBy Ellen Feldman, President

On Friday, January 8th we will install our new board. I welcome back those who are returning and welcome those new members joining us. I look forward to all of us working together for a year of profound, meaningful and fun programs.

Launching us into the new year is Sisterhood’s January cruise. In next month’s Scroll, I will share our experiences; I’ve been told

by the planning committee surprises await us! But for sure we will be bonded by sharing this unique experience, by this sense of community at sea! February will be a highlight month for Sisterhood. I encourage all of you to mark your calendars now so not to miss out on our special happenings. On February 11th, you are all invited to hear our very own Sisterhood member, and cybersecurity professional, Dr. Dianne Solomon, speak to our group on Cyber Secure Sisterhood. Fifteen years ago, most of us were just getting started with email. Today, 90% of all security breaches involve some aspect of email fraud. How did it happen? What can we do about it? Dianne will introduce us to emerging threats of social engineering and offer safety tips for credit and debit cards. Come and learn some of the best practices for protecting your computers, tablets, and phone, and thus how to best protect your bank accounts, your credit and your good name. On February 26th, 27th, and 28th we will be having a very special weekend as TBTST honors both Allan Gottesman, president of Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs and Carol Simon, is international president of Women’s League. How fortunate we are to have both of them here in Florida. Save the date and be sure to join us. Details will be forthcoming…Other dates to save:Thursday, March 17th – Purim CelebrationSunday, April 3rd – Sisterhood’s Fashion Show Don’t forget, Sisterhood is looking for those memorable family recipes for our upcoming cookbook. We would love to have your family traditions included in our publication! As I begin my second year as Sisterhood President, I would like at this time to thank Jody Glass for all her support this past year, for her suggestions and creativity in always trying to bring sisterhood to a new level. And to Helaine Cain,a much deserved Todah Rabah, for the years you served as Corresponding Secretary. A Todah Rabah goes out as well to all who contributed to our Chanukah collection for HaTikvah House. We presented them with a gift card allowing them to enjoy an evening out in a local restaurant. Thank you all for your support!

    Why Not Join aChavurah?

As part of our New Roads to Engagement Project, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek is encouraging couples or families to bring their com-mon interests to the syna-gogue. This is not a religious group, but a group of family or friends that want to social-ize together. Perhaps it is an existing group of friends that you join each month to have dinner with, see a movie or attend a play. Any group of people with common inter-ests can form a Chavurah. Shortly, you will receive a brochure and questionnaire describing this concept, and asking only for you to complete and return the questionnaire to the syna-gogue office. Based on your responses, we will form a group that fits your needs. Please join with us as we reach out and engage our congregation. Watch for our brochure!

    Are You On the List?

TBTST’s Sunshine Commit-tee notifies email recipients of the life events of fellow con-gregants in a timely manner. The committee sends notices of births, engagements, wed-dings, funerals, shiva details and hospitalizations.

If you would like to receive notices of Sunshine Joy or Sunshine Sadness, and would like to be added, please pro-vide your email address to [email protected].

Men's Club Breakfast-Open to AllFebruary 21st at 9:30 -Temple Library

Speaker Ira Winderman, Sports Writer forThe SunSentinel

    Topic Sports, Newspapers, Miami Heat

As a follow up to the December 15th Federation of Jewish Men’s Club "Man and Youth of the Year” Program at Temple Beth El in West Palm Beach, The Florida Region Keeper of the Flame Man of the Year and Youth of the Year Award was given to Alan Paley and Rachel Sandhouse. Additionally, two of our own won awards: Albie Altmark won the Grand Raffle and donated the proceeds equally amongst the Men’s Club and Temple and Rira Kaplan won the second Grand prize and

made a generous donation as well. As you know on Friday at Shabbat services on January 8th, we will be installing our new Officers and Board of Directors. The major change is that Danny Glass is stepping down as Treasurer but remaining as a member of the Board. I want to personally thank Danny and all the other Officers and Board members for all their support these past two years. I believe our Club has transitioned from surviving to thriving. I hope you can join us on January 8th where our newly elected Co-President Dr. Alan Miller will be giving an update on programing for the New Year. Please get your reservations in for the Florida Panther Game organized by Men’s Club coming up in February 18th . Additionally our following program will be a Sunday breakfast program with Ira Winderman, Sports Reporter for The Sun Sentinel who covers the Miami Heat. He will be talking about the Heat, Sports and the Press. Finally I want to thank Nancy Small and the entire Board as well as Sisterhood for all the support they have given us. On behalf of Michele and I we wish all a Happy and Healthy New Year!In Brotherhood, Barry Kanarek.

Thank you to all who expressed their condolences to us on the passing of our dear son Jonathan Kaleky. Your words of

    comfort were most appreciated.

    Why Not Join a Committee?

As it happens, much of the “work” of TBTST and most of the planning takes place in committees. So, committee mem-bership is a great place to begin becoming involved in synagogue life. Every congregation relies on its volunteers both to work and to lead. Most committees are open to all who are interested and willing to participate. Two committees that are very in-terested in finding new, enthusias-tic members are the Membership Committee, and the Marketing and Communications Committee. Volunteers are always welcome to be part of our Tikkun Olam com-mittee, the sponsors of our enor-mously successful annual Mitzvah Day. The Rabbi is always looking for people interested in the Adult Education Committee. Our Ways and Means Committee serves as a program committee and manages many of our synagogue events. Extra hands are always sought to help in those activities. If you have children, you know about our PTOs. Keep them in mind as well. Both the Sisterhood and the Men’s Club sponsor programs and support activities that benefit the synagogue. They both do their work in a social atmosphere and many deep friendships have arisen among their members. If the notion of a committee conjures up the world of corporations, cubicles and bureaucracy (ours are much friendlier by the way) think about becoming active in one of our auxiliaries. Only you know what might interest you and, if you do, let the office know and they will put you in touch with the relevant chairperson. If you know that you would like to help, but are unsure about just what you might enjoy doing, talk to one of the officers of the congregation or to the presidents of the Sisterhood or the Men’s Club.

Tree of LifeThe tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradi-tion. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our community depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.

In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.

Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc. or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not only be helping the Tree to grow, but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and in the future. There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180.If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you. You can also email [email protected] or make your donation online at www.tbtst.org.

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person.

Become an important part of TBTST's Social Action Committee’sMazon Project

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we re-ceive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand-knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.

    Consider TBTST for Your Next

    Simcha

Your next simcha, be it a bar or bat mitzvah, an anniversary party or a wedding, will be one of your family’s milestones – a day you will talk about for years to come. You want the day to be memorable and you want to look back on it fondly. That is why when we built our new building we created a welcoming facility for catered events. Our magnificent new social hall, our state of the art kitchen, our adjoining bride’s room, and our very attractive lobby have all been designed with one idea – to make simchas that are celebrated at TBTST those that will meet everyone’s standard of excellence. Our caterers are dedicated to helping to organize and manage your event and to meet your needs and expectations. Please contact our Temple Office (954) 721-7600 to obtain more information about our caterers and our facilities.
