REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST

Well, perhaps. Alan Barocas ´71 and Brian Pope´71 have compiled a list of some historical events and provided a little cultural background for the years 1963-1975 when we were all pretending to grow up. You may ask: ¨Why 1963-1975?¨ To which we reply: ¨Why not? and ¨Who cares?¨ We urge you to read this and the completed questionnaires before you perhaps become totally trashed, cross-eyed, or incoherent during tonight´s festivities. Please be advised that while some of these items are very interesting, others are totally boring. The interesting ones were compiled by Brian; the boring ones by Alan. Also, please be aware that the intellectual development of the authors has been heavily influenced by the noted American educator, John Faber. Faber is best known for promoting the idea that ¨Knowledge is Good¨ and also for founding Faber College.

We think it is fair to state that most of the past Kappa Kronicles were irreverent, crass, vulgar and politically incorrect. However, we hope to provide you with a Kronicle that is both historically insightful and intellectually stimulating. We dedicate this issue to Al Russell, Larry MacDowell, Mike Scott and Marvin Pase, KB brothers whom we knew personally, as well as those brothers who have passed and who made the world a better place. We also want to thank Roy Cameron and his committee for their herculean efforts in making this evening a reality.

Local legend has it that Abe is either a parolee from Attica or an escapee from the psychiatric ward of Albany Med who refuses to take his anti-psychotic pills. Abe never speaks; he only grunts. Rob Dobrusin is forced to work with Abe in the Pot Room and almost suffers a mental breakdown. Phil Abitabile makes history by bringing his 3 on the column Studebaker sports car to the Downtown Campus. 6 Day War results in tremendous Israeli victory. Too bad the Israelis did not invade Iraq. 1968 New KB pledges are regularly beaten into submission at Stuyvesant Tower by Pledgemasters Tom “The Beast” Carlson and Dan “The Horror” Johnson. Two pledges jump from 19th floor to evade punishment. At the instigation of Hellmaster, Mike “Mr. Special” Hoff, Val Kriel goes ape at Hell Night and whacks freezing pledges with tree branches while mumbling weird stuff. As a result of this nightmare, pledge Alan Zaremba decides to pursue a PhD in communications. MLK and RFK are assassinated. Tet Offensive reveals there is only a little light at the end of the tunnel. Nixon is elected president and promises to quit drinking and lighten up. Top song is “Hey Dude.” (I mean Jude.) Thanks to the efforts of KB Brother (and future KB President), Ken Turow, the Albany Lacrosse Club is formed. Today, UAlbany Lacrosse is nationally ranked in Division I.

1969 Broadway Joe leads Jets to victory in Super Bowl III. Stonewall riots occur in NYC. Gays beat up NYPD. Neil Armstrong walks on the moon. O’Heaney’s and Vinnie’s continue to hop. Several KB brothers survive Woodstock. Altamont Concert shows that it is not all peace, love and brotherhood, and one should avoid getting kicked in the teeth by a Hell’s Angel. Sesame Street debuts on TV and attracts a large KB following who finally learn how to count to ten. Bert and Ernie are also great hits. Mets defeat Orioles to win World Series. Top song is “Sugar, Sugar.” Super Barf.

one. Here are a few: drinking shots at the bar at beer parties, singing the drinking song, road trip s to Oneonta, playing intramural football and watching Batman in the fraternity lounge.

- The founding brothers of our fraternity chose the motto “B’Nai Chaim” which means Brothers for Life. In recent years this motto has become especially meaningful to me. Although the amount of work to organize the October 2016 reunion has involved much more time and effort than I initially imagined, I have enjoyed all the interaction on multiple levels with KB brothers and I look forward to reconnecting and reminiscing at the reunion.

- Answer: Winning the Christmas Sing with Dick Erbacher directing. Also, member initiations when candidates were dropped off out in the country side without funds, given a task to do and return to the house. I was dropped off somewhere near where the twin bridges are no in the early morning hours with two other brothers. I don’t remember who they were; does anyone know?

- Loved life in the frat house, first on State Street, then on Washington Avenue. Great companions there. Initiations then were great fun and (mostly) harmless. We also had a barbershop quartet consisting of Doug Nielson, Ernie Tebordo, Dick Erbacher and me.

1. If you go back in time and have a conversation with yourself as an 18-20 year-old, what advice would you give yourself?

- Answer: I’d probably not minored in Russian as it almost flunked me out while trying to play both basketball and baseball for State my first two years. My 4 year cum was barely over 2.0, but I did get into grad school and easily earned an MA in social studies in 1966, while leading KB to the intramural football and basketball championships. Never got off probation until my 2nd semester, Junior year! KB guys who were standouts on those AMIA teams included dick Kimball, Don Gleason, Danny Thomas (QB) and Lance Anderson.

2. What is the one characteristic about yourself that has changed since your

years at Albany? - Answer: As I grew older, being a social studies/history guy, I started by idolizing

President John Kennedy, but ended up a big fan of Mahatma Gandhi, as I have always tried to follow Gandhi’s teachings when dealing with people.

3. In thinking back over your life, what was or is your biggest accomplishment?- Answer: Probably helping our two sons be successful in life. Our oldest, Chris,

started a land company called Land First with me in 1998, as it now is one of the most successful land companies in NYS, grossing 1-2 million annually. Our youngest son, Kevin, is an elementary principal at Hamilton and is certified to become a district superintendent, which he will likely achieve before retirement.

4. If you could have dinner with any historical figure who would it be? - Answer: Obviously, Mahatma Gandhi, as his treatment of his fellow man rivals even

Christ! You can’t beat…”do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” and I am not really a religious guy! Such actions can only make you feel better about yourself…period!

5. Best president in the last 50 years… - Answer: Without question, JFK, as he first envisioned a global economy (Peace

Corps), need for space travel and a way out of the Cold War, with firm action in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Best ever, in my opinion! Oops, Kennedy died in 1963, 53 years ago! Clinton was the last one to balance the budget!

3. Did you have a nickname, and if so, what was it?- Answer: “Wimp,” I guess I fit the mold, at least when I started out! Never

really understood!

4. When you think about your time as a KB Brother what memory stands out:- Answer: I just liked the total “Animal House” atmosphere we had there

(KB House) from 1963-65, as the Brothers who came in with me in 1962 were really a special group. KB was noted for academics and politics on campus, but we brought a strong group of athletes to the table, resulting in AMIA championships in football, bowling and basketball, among others. Aside from the Greeks, there really wasn’t any kind of social life at Albany, as being a small-town guy going to the big city (Albany) was tough enough. KB gave me some stability and provided a gateway to social interaction with some truly special people. College was truly a great experience for me.
