Crowned Miss Universe New Zealand in front of a live global audience and full house at Auckland’s Sky City Theatre on Thursday evening, the Peka Peka beauty was “thrilled and surprised” by her first-place win. “I look a little stunned in the photos, as I just couldn’t believe it was my name that was announced,” said Millns, 23, who competed in the nationwide event for her second consecutive year, following regional stints in Miss Nature Coast and Miss Hutt Valley. The soft-natured beauty therapist said her previous on- stage experience and placement in last year’s Miss Universe New Zealand top five paid off. “This year, I was lot more confident and focused, which allowed me to be a lot more relaxed. “I went in knowing what areas I personally needed to work on.” Beating Queenstown’s Monique Cooley and Becky Hingston, originally of Dunedin, Millns came out on top, thanks to a combined judges’ vote and nationwide public online and text voting system. The panel of judges included modelling industry expert Colin Mathura-Jeffree and guest judge Chalita Yaemwannang, winner of Miss Universe Thailand 2013. Travelling to Florida to represent New Zealand at Miss Universe 2015 on January 18, Millns will also be locking in a trip to Bangkok and Waiheke Island as part of her first-place prize. Excited to attend this weekend’s Coastguard Spring Ball, at Southward Car Museum, in her first public appearance as Miss Universe New Zealand, the dedicated model is set for a busy year juggling photo-shoots, public appearances and a full-time job in Wellington, which she returned to yesterday. Thankful for the close friendships she developed with fellow Miss Universe New Zealand contestants, Millns said one of the best parts of her glamour-filled experience was “having all the girls from this year’s and last year’s competitions run over to congratulate me”. “Being called Miss Universe New Zealand, it is still sinking in, but I’m sure it’ll start to become more normal,” said Millns, who “couldn’t have done it without the support from local community, family and friends”. “I can’t describe how loved and supported I’ve felt through this process. “I have a lot of thank-you letters to post in the next couple of weeks.” P11 Quit smoking

The letter was from a representative atKensington Palace on behalf of William andKate — the Duke and Duchess ofCambridge.

The rest home has taken an interest inthe royal family, especially when the pairwere married.

The interest intensified when PrinceGeorge was born, and on his first birthdaythey created a handmade card offering therest home’s congratulations.

The rest home has received a letter fromthe palace thanking them for their heartfeltcard, and more.

“We were very impressed,” says resthome recreation officer June Simpson, whose daughter Lesley Simpson worked forthe Queen during her OE.

Mystery sprayer on wrong track

MANMADE: Someone has used weedkiller to create a track on publicland at the southern end of Marine Parade, Paraparaumu Beach.

A phantom sprayer is creatingvarious pathways on public land, including a prime beachfrontarea.

The latest area is an extensivesprayed track, using some type ofweedkiller, at the southern end ofMarine Parade, ParaparaumuBeach, between the beach and theroad.

“Someone believes councilshould be putting in paths in thesesorts of areas,” leisure and openspace asset manager Lex Bartlettsaid.

“It’s probably about 280m ofgrass.

“There won’t be such a cost toit because the grass will recoveragain, but it has certainly madethe area unsightly.”

The sprayed track continueson from a well-used concretepathway that was created by theKapiti Coast Rotary PathwaysTrust and council.

Mr Bartlett said the concretepathway hadn’t been continuedfor various reasons, includingcost, there was a nearby footpathand cycleway, and it was close toTahi Rd, which led to a publicwalkway at the airport.

As well as spraying, otherdamage has included cuttingfences and creating new tracksthrough scrub.

“It happens periodically indifferent locations and has beenongoing for a number of years.

“We have discussed this withpolice and it is viewed upon aswilful damage.”

He said people should contactcouncil if they had thoughts ofcreating tracks on public land.

“We would much ratherdiscuss it and see if we agree andthen we can help, or they can help, but just taking things into theirown hands isn’t right, and there’soften a number of reasons why wewouldn’t do some of these things.”

Meanwhile, someone has

stolen a number of concreteretaining wall bricks in theentrance to the Waikanae EstuaryScientific Reserve, off Tutere St,Waikanae Beach.

“Just past the entrance on theright-hand side was a retainingwall that had been there for five orso years,” Mr Bartlett said.

“Someone has stolen the wholelot.”

The wall was about 20m to 30mlong and three layers high.

“It was protecting a bank sopeople wouldn’t try and getaround a judder bar.”

He said the area wasn’t lockedat night because it was a freedom-camping area.

“We’ve had no reports ofanyone noticing anythingsuspicious.

“I assume someone has gone inthere at night and just loaded it allup.”

Mr Bartlett said anyonenoticing suspicious activityshould contact police.

Attitude changeturns life aroundDAVIDHAXTON

KEY MESSAGE: Former Kiwis rugby league player Tawera Nikausays you’ll get more enjoyment out of life if you have a good attitude.

PHOTO: DAVID HAXTON / KAP160914DHNIKAU

When Tawera Nikau was 15 yearsold, he got on a mate’s motorbike, looked around to make sure therewasn’t any cops around and wentfor a spin.

A patrol car spotted him and, despite an attempt to escape, hewas caught and taken back to theHuntly Police Station.

When his father arrived to pickhim up, he expected to be takenhome.

But his father, who knew thesergeant at the front desk, said hecould spend the night in the cells.

“It was probably one of theworst nights I’ve experienced.”

His father collected him in themorning and didn’t say anything— he just shook his head.

He was dropped off at homeand found his mother upset in thelounge.

The cocky teenager wasconfused — he had had a roughnight, not her.

“I hadn’t seen my mum crymuch, but she was in a bad statethat day.

“She was embarrassed one ofher sons had been in trouble withthe police and brought shame onthe family.

“So, from that point on, Ithought I could either take onepath or another.

“I said to myself that day that Ireally wanted to make a differenceand make my parents proud.

“Ultimately, we all have achoice about what we do.

“You may have done things inthe past, but that’s not going todefine your future.”

He went on to become one ofthe world’s best professionalrugby league players, with hisglittering career seeing himrepresent the Kiwis, as well as anumber of clubs such as theMelbourne Storm and theCronulla Sharks.

Nikau addressed about 70community-based offenders fromWellington, Porirua and Kapiti at

an innovative programme, spearheaded by the Department ofCorrections and involving variousother organisations, at SouthwardCar Museum on Tuesday lastweek, to educate them about roadsafety.

He told them that after heretired from playing rugby league,he came back to Huntly andbought a brand new HarleyDavidson.

One day he was riding homewhen he rode over a hill and founda Landrover had cut a corner andwas coming directly at him.

Fearing a collision, he droppedthe bike to the left and tried toaccelerate away, but ended upcrashing against the side of thevehicle.

“The next thing I know I wasdoing a backward somersaultthrough the air.”

When the dust settled, he triedto get up, but his right leg was amess and felt like someone had“shoved a red hot poker” down it.

After weeks in hospital, which

involved 20 major operationsunder general anesthetic and sixblood transfusions, a doctor toldhim he might have to stay inhospital for a year to 18 months fordoctors to try to save his leg, although there wasn’t a guaranteeit would work.

Or he could have the legamputated and be out in threedays.

Nikau thought about his youngfamily who needed him, and alsoabout a statement frommotivational company Team One,where he is a director.

The statement says: “Thequality of life you will ultimatelyenjoy is not so much determinedby what happens to you, but byyour attitude towards it and whatyou decide to do about it.”

So he decided to have his legamputated and is now leading afull and satisfying life.

He said it didn’t matter whoyou were or where you came from,at the end of the day, “it’s aboutyour attitude towards things”.

Waikanae-based Plunket nurseKatrina Coleman has beenhonoured as the New ZealandNurses Organisation’s first-ever Young Nurse of the Year.

She was “blown away” byher win, which was announcedat last Wednesday’s awardsdinner in Wellington.

Young Nurse of the Year isan award specified for a nurseunder 30, who has demonstratedan exceptional commitment totheir patients and profession.

As well as highlighting thestandout efforts of an individualyoung nurse in the workplace, the award illustrates NewZealand Nurses Organisation’scommitment to supporting thecollective of younger nurses inthe industry.

“This is hugely pride-evoking,” said Coleman.

“The award is nice because itmakes missing out on familyfunctions and catching up withfriends only occasionally all forsomething.”

The concept of Young Nurse

of the Year stemmed from ateam established by NewZealand Nurses Organisationand comprised of nurses, aged30 and under, who were asked topresent ways the organisationcan support younger nurses inthe workplace.

“We are so excited to bepresenting this award for thefirst time. Young nurses are ourfuture and deserve therecognition of their peers, colleagues and the public,”group member MadeleineO’Connor said.

Council ‘puts things right’These are exciting times forKapiti. There is a lothappening in the district andit is time to grasp the hugeopportunities foradvancement that lie beforeus.

To move forward, we’vehad to address the mistakes ofthe past and ‘put things right’.

Actions we have taken tohonour that pledge andimprove our systems include:■ Introducing a new, collaborative ProposedDistrict Plan process that haswon widespread support fromsubmitters■ Restructuring ourRegulatory Services Group tofocus on our ‘Open forBusiness’ customer-friendlyculture, supported by robustquality assurance processes■ Committing to

withdrawing contentiouscoastal hazard provisions andagreeing to undertake furtherresearch on these hazards, inconsultation with an advisorygroup■ Adopting a new system ofchecks and balances forenforcement and prosecutiondecisions■ Working on a framework toidentify risks before support isgiven to new economicinitiatives.

All of these are examples of‘putting it right’.

We’ve grasped the nettle on

some of the toughest issuesfacing Kapiti and, in eachcase, solutions have or arebeing found.

As this council approachesits first year in office, it is atestament to how much hasbeen put in place to give us abase for better decisionmaking.

Now it’s time to put all thatwork to bed. We need to beforward-looking, notbackward-looking.

The focus has to be on thehuge amount of progress beingmade in Kapiti.

Over the last few months,we have seen not just a majoreconomic injection throughthe expressway work, but alsosmaller, impressive successes.

I am thinking of the workdone by the Central DaffodilGroup to get the North Island

National Daffodil Show held inWaikanae — the first time in88 years it has been here.

The result was thousandsof visitors attracted to Kapiti.

Many more will come inNovember when the BlackSticks men play hockey testsin Paraparaumu againstJapan, with council backing.

Now, we have anopportunity for progress in adifferent area. There has beenhuge interest in what facilitieswe can put in place at theOtaihanga Reserve, the 60hectares council bought southof the Waikanae River.

Buying that land was one ofthe best decisions of theprevious council. This councilwill now work with thecommunity to put that land tobest-possible use. There is somuch to look forward to.

Wendy HustonChief Executive Officer,Kapiti Retirement Trust

Lodge DriveParaparaumu,

With the worst of winter now hopefully behind usand the promise of spring and summer just ahead,it’s time to start planning the last part of the year. For those living in the community with an age relatedillness or those caring for someone with such anillness, it is vital to take care of yourself.

Current Government Policy and funding reflects this;with those who are in such circumstances being ableto access ‘respite’ funding to provide a break for bothparties. It’s interesting to reflect on the rationalebehind this. Central Government has a Policy inplace for aged-care, based around ‘Aging in Place’.This works on the premise that it is far more desirablefor people as they age to remain in their own homes. As well as providing for cares needed in the home, the Policy also acknowledges that it is important forthose caring for a family member (often a spouse),to have regular breaks so that they can rechargeenergy levels and continue with the caring.

As such, people who fit within this category may beassessed for up to 28 days per year of funded care. The challenge then becomes finding a suitable placefor such care to be delivered. Recognising the need forthis, four years ago Kapiti Retirement Trust becamethe first residential aged care facility in the country todevelop a dedicated unit providing blocks of respitecare to the community. The uniqueness of this serviceis that the blocks of care can be booked up to sixmonths in advance. This enables the carer to planfor trips away or to be part of special occasions suchas family weddings or anniversaries; knowing thatthe unwell family member is being looked after in anappropriate manner.

TheMatai Wing, located within the Trust’s agedcare hospital at Sevenoaks, focuses on providingquality care in a ‘fit for purpose’ setting. With registeredstaff on duty 24/7 the often complex, medicalneeds of clients can be met within an environmentwhich is conducive to personalised care. The roomsare individually furnished and while providing thenecessary specialist equipment, also provide for acomfortable stay. All rooms have flat screen TVs,WIFI access and with most having individual fridgesand room access to garden areas they do not representcommon perceptions of aged care facilities.

Assessment for respite care is carried out by theCare Co-ordination Centre who are contracted byCapital and Coast DHB to do this. You can referyourself or be referred by your GP.Anyone wantingto knowmore about the Matai Wing or block respitecare can contact Beverley Kirbell, the Trust’s clinicaladministrator by phoning 04 2970116 or [email protected]

In addition to block respite care, the Trust alsooperates theNikau Club for those wanting regular, day respite. Again the thinking is, by giving the carer aregular opportunity to do other things - be it meetingwith friends, attending clubs or appointments or justhaving a quiet time at home, it again provides thechance to re-energise and keep caring.

The Nikau Club, within the Sevenoaks village provides apurpose designed, small and intimate environmentwith a home cooked lunch and a daily programmetailored to individual needs. To find outmore, contactBeverley on 042970116.

Candidate claimsdiscriminationCLOEWILLETTS

‘Although New Zealand is ademocracy, it’s individual

people organising the publicityand events, and they’re notbound by any government

regulation about democracy’AMANDAVICKERSIndependent candidate

This year’s general election process didnot adhere to “the spirit of democracy”,according to Independent candidateAmanda Vickers, who stood for theOtaki electorate.

Vickers, a Waikanae veterinarianwith a stance on modernising monetarypolicy, said the treatment ofindependent candidates and smallerparties was “disappointing”.

“I was specifically told I wasn’tallowed to speak at one event, and atanother event the less-knowncandidates were given less speakingtime.”

Vickers said the “discrimination”,which included exclusion fromcandidate question/answer pieces inmedia publications, stemmed from “notbeing attached to an established party”and her policies “being based on onefundamental platform — standingagainst corporatisation”.

“Although New Zealand is ademocracy, it’s individual peopleorganising the publicity and events, andthey’re not bound by any governmentregulation about democracy,” she said.

Fred Macdonald, also an Independentcandidate in the Otaki electorate, saidhe too experienced “failures” during theelectoral process.

He said the electoral commission didnot provide candidate information in atimely manner, which “resulted in bothcandidates and electors not having fullinformation”.

While the advanced voting facility

began on September 3, Macdonald saidhe only received his personal My EasyVote card, Otaki electorate candidatenominees, and party lists on September11.

“The information on who had putthemselves forward as an electoratecandidate, party lists, and Easy Votecards should have been immediatelysupplied to all registered voters by mail, once the nominations had closed onAugust 26,” he said.

“Opportunity for advanced votingshouldn’t have commenced until thissupply of information process wascompleted.”

He said not all information was madepublic in time for events such as Meetthe Candidates, which resulted in himnot being “contacted by any organisersof the meetings to appear and presentmy political position”.

“The present system directly benefitslarger parties such as National andLabour, and not the smaller parties andindependent candidates.”

Managing fearbehind success

A bizarre election campaign. Anunpredicted result.

I start my rationalisation with a quotefrom Henry Louise Mencken. The journalistand critic of American life and culture said:“The whole aim of practical politics is to keepthe populace alarmed — and henceclamorous to be led to safety — by menacing itwith an endless series of goblins, all of themimaginary”. The management of fear is afundamental political tool. It accumulates inthe crucible of the non-rational mid-brain.

The subliminal psychology of ourmainstream citizenship, like that of ournearest neighbour Australia, is linked to theUnited Kingdom. Did the threat ofScotland’s referendum on independenceand the politics of fear and uncertainty, unleashed by those opposed, alsoreverberate fear here, in the South Pacific? What about the fear, uncertainty anddiscomfort caused by our own citizenry’ssudden discovery, through Nicky Hager’sDirty Politics, that the Kiwi brand ofRealpolitik we trusted was actually acesspool of cynicism and nastiness?

Then, we have the controversial KimDotcom phenomenon. He is German. That’sfine except the media, not long ago, exposedhim as a collector of Nazi memorabilia. Itwas a media beat up but it becomes part ofthe Dotcom branding. We are a nation thathas fought two world wars against theGermans. Hundred-year commemorationsof WW1 are being held across the country.Join the dots. Financing the Internet Partyis one thing but being in the forefront of itscampaign was imprudent. A target for thexenophobic sights of Winston Peters andothers.

Then the Moment of Truth event inAuckland. Dotcom failed to deliver hissmoking gun. But it opened up seriousquestions on massive intelligence snoopingon ordinary Kiwis through New Zealand’slinks with the Five Eyes operations. It was

also fascinating to see this aspect ofAuckland as a Supercity where whistle-blower, American Edward Snowden, holding up in Russia, is beamed in to sharegiant screens with Australian JulianAssange, himself a refugee in anEcuadorian Embassy in London. Truly abizarre global experience.

Post elections, Dotcom admitted hispersonal brand was poison to the ManaParty. Some will go further and say it waspoison to the whole election. Many, including John Key, have noted that theMoment of Truth proved a circuit breakerfor a National Party under siege. The failureof Dotcom to produce a smoking gun is afactor. The bigger factor was the crescendothat was built up about John Key beingdirectly connected to this massive snoopinginto the personal lives of Kiwis to benefitforeign intelligence gathering.

In Tai Chi and Judo there is a particularmove where the full force of the opponent isskilfully redirected back on the opponent. Ibelieve this moment came when, immediately after the Moment of Truth, andjust before polling day, Australianintelligence activated their anti-terroristsquads. Kiwis were told that there was aplot, by terrorists connect to the Syrian ISIS,to publicly behead Australian victims andbroadcast the gruesome event. The cynicscould argue that the Five Eyes look aftereach other’s interest. Indeed the timing andimpact of the Australian intelligencecrackdown could not have been moreperfect. The negative attack on John Keyand the question of mass surveillancesuddenly became a positive boost justifyingthe need to take measures to keep us safe. Are not Australia and New Zealand theSouth Pacific twins connected to theumbilical cord of the UK?

There are other reasons for National’svictory like the fact that with no crediblethreat from the likes of ACT, National’spolicies have moved more to the centre andeaten into Labour’s traditional appeal. Theyhave also kept the economy afloat through aglobal recession. But the unpredictableresult cannot be explained and I find in MrMencken’s quote an insight worthexploring.

The Keep New Zealand BeautifulAnnual Awards were announcedrecently in Wellington, and Dunedinsuccessfully secured two awards for thecity, including the prestigiousBeautiful Towns and Cities Award.

The Beautiful Towns and CitiesAward recognises and celebratespositive actions taken by communitiesin local and urban areas to protect andenhance their local environments.

They encompass initiatives asdiverse as litter prevention, recycling, protection of the environment, preserving heritage, community actionand leadership and environmentalsustainability programmes. We, as acommunity, can all do our bit.

Waikanae won a Keep New ZealandBeautiful award in 2008.

This is a significant achievement fora small community.

Securing an award of this naturereflects a lot of hard work anddedication from our local Keep ZealandBeautiful Team and the wholecommunity.

This was a job well done. However,it’s time we dusted the shelf off and putWaikanae back on the map again.

The town centre project provides aperfect environment to rekindle someof our lost passion.

We need to regroup as a communityand get behind our local Keep NewZealand Beautiful team now to ensurewe have any chance of securing thisesteemed award again next year. Wecan all do our bit.

Remember, it is not just the bigprojects that count — every little onemakes a difference.

If we want to attract people toWaikanae, we need to showcase ourcommunity to the country.

Let’s make Waikanae a better place.

Cook and eat healthy real deal

LEARN TO COOK : treat yourself to a newrecipe book.

Just eat real food! This issomething I’ve be preachingforever. I’m a big fan ofeveryone making goodchoices when it comes tonutrition, because with goodnutrition comes good health. If you eat processed food on aregular basis that is lackingin nutrients, is high in salt, sugar and saturated fats yourhealth will suffer. Good foodis fuel that keeps your bodyrunning on all cylinders. Ifyou look at your body as afinely tuned Mercedes Benzthere is no use putting cocacola in the petrol tank becauseit will not run as it was intendto. Instead it will cough,

splutter, back fire andprobably stop sooner ratherthan later. So regularly eatingpot noodles, sausage rolls, pies, cakes, muffins, hamburgers, fries and justgeneral crap you are sendingyourself to an early grave . . .harsh but fair.

If you treat your body witha lack of respect it will not beable to survive the riggers ofdaily life.

I love to cook every night

because I’m an activerelaxer and I find being inthe kitchen verytherapeutic. I also knowthat when I do the cookingand prepare meals for my

family I know exactly whatgoes in my food.

If you regularly buytakeaways and processed foodyou have know idea howmuch salt, sugar andadditives are in the food tomake it taste that way.

Buy eating normal food Ican choose seasonal fruit andvegetables that not only tastegreat but give me energy andmake me feel healthy. My advice is simple:

- 95% of the time eat clean.- If you can’t cook then learnhow to cook.- Eat real food.- Cook and prepare your ownmeals.- Choose water over fizzydrinks and juice.- Eat seasonal fruit andvegetables.- Go to Paper Plus and treatyourself to a new recipe book.- Make soup, sauces andspreads from scratch.- Grow your own vegetables.Remember food is fuel and ifyou eat clean and natural foodyour body will maintainenergy for longer allowingyou to get more out of life.

‘Kiwi spirit’fades awayI am disabled, living on theSuper and in a retirementvillage.

On September 11, mybarbecue was stolen. This was apremeditated act as it requiredmore than one person to lift itout of my patio, which has a one-meter-high retaining wallaround it.

I cannot afford to replace thisand it is less than the excess onmy contents insurance.

One reason for having abarbecue is so that it can be usedin an emergency, as analternative means of cooking.

As the lowlife that stole it didnot get the gas bottle, it will notbe of much use to them, unlessthey steal that as well — andthen they will need to fill it.

Where has the real Kiwispirit gone? I have now beenburgled three times in 10 yearson the Kapiti Coast.

MARLENE FROSTWaikanae

Handouts don’tmake life betterI’m what you’d consider theaverage Kiwi.

While I admire our wonderfuldemocratic society that allowsnine-year-old Lara Zampese towrite to your paper (KapitiNews, September 17), one doeswonder who, at the age of nine-years-old, feeds her this rubbish(at nine, I was building forts upthe bush and trapping possums, not caring about politics).

So, here’s my story. My mumdied when I was eight, leavingfour sons — aged four, eight(me), 12 and 15.

Our father was an alcoholicin an age where there was noMinistry of Social Developmentor Child, Youth and Family. So,us four boys decided we didn’twant a life that our fatherintroduced us into and, without‘social services’ propping us up,we’d have to stop the cycle andmake the best of what wasdished up to us.

I’m happy to say that at 55, meand my brothers have all donepretty well and we’re well-adjusted — and sort ofsuccessful — human beings, contributing positively tosociety without anyGovernment handouts orcounselling at all.

Our ethos is that no one owesyou anything, and if you rely onsomeone else to make your life“right”, then life is not worthliving.

I read all this rubbish aboutour kids living in “poverty”.

Well, our Governmentdoesn’t have an obligation tomake parents suitable to beparents in a safe environment, whereas we, as parents, have anobligation to ensure our kidsgrow up in a safe environment.

So, no matter how muchmoney we throw at ensuring ourkids don’t grow up in poverty, perhaps we should throw somemoney at parents, who do havean obligation to their kids thatthey grow up in a healthy andsafe environment.

So, my message to Lara is, I’dlove to catch up with you to say‘hey, life is a bitch, but if youmake that decision thathandouts ain’t going to make lifeany better (but your attitude tolife will), then get on with it and, regardless, you’ll succeed in thepath of life’.

TONY HUNTOtaihanga

Geese pushpeople awayfrom reserveI entirely concur with councillorK Gurunanthan’s comments inyour September 17 paper, exceptthat there are four retentionlakes in the Awatea/Waterstonereserve.

I am one of the many peoplewho use this reserve regularlyand who are effected by thisworsening problem.

I have to say that the councilkeeps this reserve area in abeautiful condition, wherepeople of all ages should be ableto enjoy walking, cycling, andboating.

It is just a great pity that thearea is spoilt by the massivequantity of geese droppings allover the grass and footpaths.

I spoke to a woman recentlywho said she had stoppedwalking her dog in the areabecause it enjoyed rolling in thegrass and got covered in geesefaeces.

Geese only need two things tosettle — water to drink andswim in and nicely mown, shortgrass nearby to feed on.

I understand that there are anumber of ways to reduce thenumbers of geese in this areawithout shooting them, but, asthe councillor says, this is aregional problem, and perhapseven a national one.

One thing is certain — giventhe right conditions, they willcontinue to multiply.

Their lifespan is 20 to 25 yearswith few or no predators, so thisdoes not bode well for theenvironment.

ANTHONY MYERSParaparaumu

Let childrenbe childrenI was appalled to see a letter inyour September 17 papersupposedly from a child of nineyears old exhorting people not tovote National.

It was obviously written byparents who are Labour or Greenssupporters.

Parents should let theirchildren be children for as manyyears as possible — I know manynine-year-olds who do not evenknow there is an election and aremore interested in playing sportand having fun, which is the role ofchildren.

I was a little surprised that you, too, choose to publish it.

MARGARET BROWNParaparaumu

Mallard’s historyfrom imaginationMalcolm Thorpe has been surfingthe internet for information on ourcritically endangered parera, orNew Zealand grey duck.

He would be wise to be morecredulous about what he findsthere.

‘Talking to your laptop’ is aderisory term used to describesuch armchair punditry and it wasa major factor in the way the NZTransport Agency’s scientistsassembled their conservationknowledge of Kapiti to present tothe Board of Inquiry.

To their credit, however, theyaccepted the video evidence thatparera were here in Kapiti when itwas put in front of them.

Mr Thorpe continues in denial. He has also penned an imaginaryhistory of the introduction of themallard into New Zealand.

English mallards were first

introduced in pioneer times, thenbanned when it was realised theywere interbreeding with parera.

Following intensive lobbyingby the Colonial AmmunitionCompany from the end of the 1930s,30,000 mallard eggs wereeventually imported from theUnited States.

This was managed by theAcclimatisation Societies, theforerunners of today’s Fish andGame.

What they didn’t realise wasthat parera migrated to Australiaand through the Pacific, so thatwhat was a local conservationdisaster has now become aregional one.

Mr Thorpe will also besurprised to learn that parera caninterbreed with grey teal and thevery rare pateke, or brown teal.

Such interspecies bed-hoppingrenders any simple explanation ofwhat is going on in ourincreasingly endangered wetlands, foolhardy.

October the month to quit ciggiesDAVIDHAXTON

KEEP PUSHING: Children andadults push an inflatable red ballin Otaki. The ball has beenraising awareness for a quit-smoking challenge calledStoptober.

A cool 31-day quit-smokingchallenge gets under way onOctober 1.

People who sign up forStoptober get free daily texts, emails and more to help them getthrough the challenge andhopefully quit smoking for good.

To help drum up support forthe challenge, a large inflatablered ball has been pushed invarious towns throughout thecountry.

Some children and adultspushed the ball along Otaki’sMain St on Thursday.

“The reason for Stoptober isthat evidence tells us that ifsomeone stops for 31 days theirchances of staying stopped isgreater,” Mid Central DistrictHealth Board smoking cessationcollective team leader Fay Selby-Law said.

“It’s another one of the toolswe are using to reach SmokeFree Aotearoa 2025.”

Fay said smoking was still abig issue in New Zealand.

“It has a massive health effect.“Fifty per cent of people who

use this product will die from it,”

she said, citing Ministry ofHealth information.

“It seems amazing to me thatwe take so long to learn about it.

“We’ve got to make sure we

get rid of it because our youngpeople continue to pick it up.

“It still has its exciting, rebellious, sexy side. . .all thesethings young people are looking

for. It’s best just to get rid of itcompletely in my view.”

She said 2025 was comingquickly.

“We have to have these

surges.“We can continue to support

people to quit and for some ittakes many goes.

“It will take a lot of time butwe need lots of approaches to it.

“And certainly our freeservices refers to a menu ofopportunity to quit, and this isone on the menu.

“We do group treatment, faceto face, phone, the quit line isavailable, and more.

“It’s about saying to thesmoker you can try all of these, you can try one of these, you cantry them 10 times over — butkeep trying because eventually itwill work.”

Kapanui School had threeseven-member teams in thetournament and one of theirteams, Kapanui 2, featuringKasia O’Meara, Kiera Weber-Sparrow, Connor Trupp, KaneCurnow, Jackson Kelly, JackEverett-Brown and Nadja Figur-Ambler, won their division inthe applied technology section. They now get to compete inMelbourne against the winnersfrom the Australiantournaments in the AustralasianPacific final on October 16.

“This was a hugeachievement as it was Kapanui’sfirst year entering thecompetition,” teacher RochelleMcKenzie said.

“We were absolutely rapt withthe result and were very proud ofall of the Kapanui teams whoworked really hard for the lastsix weeks on their long termchallenges.”

The students in the appliedtechnology section were asked tocome up with a useful wearable

device and students had to makean advertisement about thedevice and an oral presentationto perform for judges on thecompetition day.

Kapanui 2 came up with ashopping band, a wearabledevice to make shopping easier. It can be worn on the wrist, itautomatically scans items in thesupermarket when they arepicked up, removing the need forsupermarket queues and it syncswith your fridge so that you arenotified by the device when aproduct is running low.

This year there were over 80teams entered in the tournamentheld at Hutt Intermediate andthe day was a hive of excitementand creative minds. Teams arerequired to solve demanding,open-ended challenges from oneof the following disciplines:applied technology, languageliterature, maths engineeringand social sciences.

If anyone would like to helpthe students get to Melbourneplease contact RochelleMcKenzie [email protected].

Kapiti Lions has organised a LionsLong Walk Home event forNovember aimed at highlightingthe need for commuters to becomefamiliar with the potential 50kmwalk home from Wellingtonfollowing a major disaster.

With 45-plus kilometres fromWellington to the Kapiti Coast, project manager and Kapiti Lionsmember Andrew Laing said in theevent of a disaster such as anearthquake, “recovery will be slowand people must be prepared totake care of themselves for severaldays or longer”.

“Thousands would bemarooned in the city, and thenightmare of no way home otherthan on foot must be at the back ofthe minds of many,” Laing said.

“Some may already haveheeded warnings and put theirgrab bags under desks with shoes, warm clothes, nibbles and water, but they must also wonder if theywould be capable of completingsuch a long trek home.”

The Lions Long Walk Home, set

for November 1 and 2, has been inthe works for months, and will see150 people endure the physicalchallenge and “highlight the issueof preparedness to a much wideraudience”.

“The walkers, who will need topre-register, will be briefed atWellington Railway Station beforefollowing SH1 via NgaurangaGorge and ending day one atNgatitoa Domain in Paremata,” hesaid.

“The following morning willsee them re-assemble at thedomain and walk to RaumatiSouth, via SH1 to Paekakariki, then through Queen ElizabethPark or the beach to finish at thecar park on the seaward side of theMarine Gardens, where there willbe a welcome home barbecue.”

Laing stressed the project is nota race, and is aimed primarily atKapiti commuters, although KapitiLions will be acceptingregistrations for people inJohnsonville through toPlimmerton for Day One.

“Those with recreationalwalking fitness levels would cover

each day in about five hours, butothers may take as long as sevenhours.

“Local Lions clubs will beproviding drink stations and othersupport in their areas.”

Kapiti Lions has organised foreach participant to receive a highvisibility bib, “as a lot of the walkis beside SH 1 and there are one ortwo ‘tricky’ sections”.

“Safety is paramount, andparticipants will be required tocertify they have read the safetybriefings and will adhere to them.”

Each participant will also

receive a basic first aid kit, courtesy of ACC, and emergencyservices will be close by to assist ifnecessary.

Entry forms provide fullinformation regarding the route, controls, toilets and drink stationsfor the event, as well as personalsafety and entrant requirements.

Laing said he and two otherKapiti Lions members, each goldcard holders and one with a doublehip-replacement, have walked thetotal distance and identified theprecise route, and the sectionsrequiring extra care and

supervision, signage and roadcones.

“A dozen or so people havealready registered, includingWellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown,” Laing said.

“We are organising the LionsLong Walk Home to generate theneed for every commuter to thinkabout their planning, testthemselves, and be prepared.”

Registration is $30, with anyexcess money going to theWellington Free Ambulance.

New careasesburdenTHANK YOU: Nikau

Foundation trusteeLiz Koh gives tokeys to a brand newcar to Lee Pownall, from the CancerSociety.

‘I think it’s important thatcommunities learn to lookafter themselves, andmakethemselves sustainable.

Kapiti is a good size to be ableto achieve this.’LIZ KOH

Nikau Foundation

“We’re on this earth to be happy,” saysNikau Foundation trustee Liz Koh.

“If you want a happiness fix, go and helpsomeone instead of buying chocolate orshoes.”

This, says Ms Koh, is backed up by well-known ample research.

She recently handed over to LeePownall of the Cancer Society the keys to anew car.

Nikau provided a grant to CancerSociety Kapiti to buy the car, with supportfrom HMC Kapiti.

Now, $10,000 can be spent on cancerresearch and supporting those with cancerinstead of four doors and an engine.

Ms Koh says handing over the keys tothe Cancer Society was an emotionalexperience.

“You see both the need and thegratitude.

“These people work so hard and it’sgreat to know that a grant like ours canmake such a huge difference to what theycan do in the community.”

She says people like the staff at CancerSociety Kapiti and other not-for-profits arethe treasures of our community.

“The people that do that kind of workare really lovely, community-orientatedpeople.

“They probably give way more thanmost of us.”

It’s the importance of giving that MsKoh says is a key to creating a healthy andsustainable Kapiti community.

Nikau Foundation’s other gift to Kapitiis the creation last year of a local districtfund, the Kapiti Fund.

Businesses and individuals cancontribute to the fund and Nikau investsthat money.

The interest earned over time goesback into the community by way of grants.

Ms Koh is a proud parent of the KapitiFund.

“I felt that Kapiti needed its own fund.“I work with local not-for-profit

organisations and I see them reallystruggle.

“They have to apply to Wellington andnational organisations for funds.

“Kapiti needs to support itself.“I think it’s important that communities

learn to look after themselves, and makethemselves sustainable.

“Kapiti is a good size to be able toachieve this.”

Nikau Foundation’s Kapiti Fund has atarget of reaching five million dollars by2020, and $20m in the next 10 years.

“If we’d started twenty years ago, imagine where we’d be now.

“We’d be making a substantialdifference to our community because weworked together.”

For now, not-for-profits like CancerSociety Kapiti are benefiting from NikauFoundation grants.

A Community Foundation for theWellington region, Ms Koh says Nikau ispart of the world’s fastest-growingmovement in philanthropy.

“It’s about everyone in a communitycreating a sustainable future.

“And there’s only one way to do this —start now, and do it together.

“If we can join together we can makewonderful things happen in ourcommunity.

“There’s so much potential for Kapiti toget things right.”

Finding out who we areCLOEWILLETTS

EXPRESSIVE: Artist and art tutor Debbie Pointon with some ofthe works set for display at this week’s Ko Wai Au: Who Am I,Where Do I Come From? How Do I Fit into this World? exhibition, running until October 12, at Pataka Art and Museum’s BottleCreek Gallery, Porirua.

Often, people wonder whoam I? How do I fit into thisworld?

This week, consumers offorensic mental healthservices at Porirua’s TeKorowai campus areanswering those questionsthrough a collection of artworks, as part of a 2014Mental Health AwarenessWeek exhibition.

The exhibition, runningfrom today until October 12,at Bottle Creek Gallery, adivision of Pataka Art andMuseum in Porirua, is titledKo Wai Au: Who Am I, WhereDo I Come From? How Do I Fitinto this World?

The exhibitors, part ofRangipapa and Purehuhu, and the Rangitahi youthservice, have workedalongside campus art tutorand Raumati South artistDebbie Pointon to create avariety of visual art works, poetry and songs, whichhave helped them learnabout themselves and teachothers about who they are ina wider context.

Tying in with this year’s

Mental Health Awarenesstheme Keeping Learning, theexhibition unearthsconsumers’ personal storiesand perspectives, andrepresents who they are asindividuals beneath theirexterior as mental health

consumers.Reoccurring use of

materials is found throughoutthe two forensic groupprojects, Identity Tree andWalking in My Shoes.

Among the materials usedis driftwood, which highlights

the significance of the beachfor many of the exhibitors, whoare often taken to the beachwhen given community leaveto take their first walk, wherethey collect driftwood andshells.

The eye-catching Walkingin My Shoes project byRangipapa residentssymbolises the reality that noone can truly understand whatanother is experiencing untilthey have walked in theirshoes, and depicts clients’thoughts and feelings on hand-crafted paper mache shoes.

Created using differentmaterials including tissuepaper and newsprint, the shoeshave words written acrosstheir surfaces, expressing andrevealing the reflection of self, with some mothers havingcreated smaller versions ofshoes to give voice to theirchildren.

Cherish the small joys in lifeTHE LUNCHBOX

Screening at ShorelineCinemaWaikanae

One of Mumbai's miracles isthe lunchbox deliveryphenomenon. Mumbai'sDabbawallahs are a communityof 5000 dabba (lunchbox)deliverymen.

It is a hereditary profession.Every morning the

Dabbawallahs deliver hotmeals from the kitchens ofhousewives to the offices oftheir husbands, and then

return the empty lunchboxesback to the homes in theafternoon.

For 120 years they haveprovided Mumbaikars with ataste of home in the office.

They navigate through theovercrowded local trains, andchaotic streets — that oftenhave a namesake or more thanone name.

The Dabbawallahs areilliterate; they use a complexcoding system of colours andsymbols to deliver dabbas inthe labyrinth that is Mumbai.Harvard University analyzedtheir delivery system, andconcluded that just one in 4million lunchboxes is everdelivered to the wrong address.‘Dabba' is the story of that onelunchbox.

A wrongly deliveredlunchbox connects a housewife— Ila Vaid, to Saajan

Fernandes, a lonely man in thedusk of his life. Ila lives inKandivili, the conservativemiddle class Hindu enclave. And Saajan lives in Ranwarvillage, Bandra, an oldChristian neighbourhood thatis threatened by the new highrises of Mumbai.

Very soon Saajan will retireand bid goodbye to a Mumbaithat crushed his dreams, tookaway his loved ones one by one,and turned his hair white.

Just then Ila comes into hislife.

In the big city, that crushesdreams and recycles themeveryday, both find a dream tohold on to.

They exchange notes in thelunchbox and create a fantasylife.

As the lunchbox goes backand forth, this fantasy becomesso elaborate that it threatens tooverwhelm their reality.

The characters of TheLunchbox exist on the linebetween the Mumbai of realityand the Mumbai of fantasy.

In the end, they come to acrossroads where they mustchoose between the two worlds.

The Lunchbox is the story ofnostalgia and of hope for thefuture, and above all, of thesmall joys of life that need ourattention.

THE PERFECT FAMILY BEACH HOMEDesigned by Peter Davis & built in 2000 by Carl Van Der Meer & his team, this is a rare & unique offering for todays busy modern family. Situated amongst the toweringNorfolk pines within a quiet cul de sac just minutes walk from the Links golf course & the main beach precinct, this is a home that offers both form & function. I suspectthe Designers brief was to create an elegant home with generous living spaces for both adults & children, high quality service areas, a big welcoming entry hall, & asweeping feature staircase. At around 267m² the lower interior offers a large family friendly granite kitchen as its centrepiece, a relaxed family/dining room with gas fire,a separate West facing formal lounge, master brm ensuite plus 2nd brm, & access into the double garaging. From the homes main entry hall a beautiful curved staircaseleads upstairs to a generous 3rd brm with its own private lounge & wc, making it ideal for both teenagers, guests or the option of running a homestay. If it's theperfect home in the perfect location you are after, may we suggest you've found it. Welcome Home.

Classical concert promisessomething for everyone

Leading Kapiti Coast classicalmusicians will come togetherat Raumati on Sunday topresent an organ, piano andvocal recital as part of theKapiti Uniting Parish’s 30thanniversary celebrations.

Local legends Peter Averi, organ, and Ellen Barrett, contralto, will share theplatform with renownedorganist Ken Dougall, cellistClare Barrett, John Sargentplaying piano and bass, andStuart Grant on piano. RogerWiig will compere theperformance, held at theparish’s Raumati church.

Classical organ music will

be the centrepiece of theafternoon’s performance, andtherein lies anotheranniversary: Peter Averi willplay the organ he helped thechurch select back in 1994.

“Not so long ago really”,says Peter, whose musicalcareer spans six decades.

“You could say I’m comingout of retirement for thisperformance, but then I’venever really retired.

“Music is my life and italways will be”.

Peter says the programmewill be a “mixed bag”, withsomething for everyone.

Music and songs, selected by

the performers themselves, range from Handel’s hauntingaria Ombra Mai Fu to excerptsfrom Saint-Saens’ whimsicalyet moving The Carnival of theAnimals, from Mendelssohn’sdelicate Songs Without Wordsto Charles-Marie Widor’sstirring Toccata. Ellen will singfolk songs from Wales,England, Scotland and Ireland, too.

Recital co-organisers BrianGray and Bruce Johnstonreport strong interest, and thelast ticket has now been sold.Unfortunately, they say, manywill miss what promises to be amemorable occasion.

Overcoming learning difficulties

HELPING OUT:Reader/writerLindsayMathison withParaparaumuCollege studentAne Vermaak.

Bernie Randall writesabout the great workvolunteers are doingin helping studentswith reading, writingand mathematics

If you believe the basis of agood education is reading, writing and arithmetic thenyou might be surprised to learnthat there are some studentswho find this a difficult goal toobtain because of learningdifficulties. This is whereteachers and volunteers fromthe Kapiti community, including a number of retiredpeople, are actively lending ahelping hand to provide pupilswith support.

Young people with learningdisabilities face particularchallenges and difficulties witheducation and employment. While it may be possible forthem to work and liveindependently, they sometimestake longer to learn new skillsand need support in doing so.Paraparaumu and KapitiColleges do a huge amount ofwork in helping young peopleto prepare for the next steps intheir lives.

One of these ways is tofacilitate help from thevolunteers in the communitywho act as reader/writersduring the stressfulexamination period. Bothcolleges allow pupils with

learning difficulties to havequestions read out to them andin some cases the answers thepupils supply written down ontheir behalf.

A reader/writer may readthe test questions andinstructions to students but theguidelines are quite clear thatit does not include givingexplanations or definitions ofwords. Where required thehelper writes the answerexactly as given by the student.

A student who struggleswith reading but has goodlistening skills can benefitfrom a reader. It can increase achild’s self-confidence and

sense of independence and canexperience success in examswhile living with a learningdifficulty.

Students with learningdisabilities are fortunate thatthe Ministry of Educationrecognise their strengths andallow them to work aroundtheir learning difficulties. It isnot so long ago that theMinistry of Education failed togive recognition to studentswith dyslexia and otherlearning difficulties. But onceendorsed by the ministry it wasenthusiastically adopted by thecolleges who quickly identifiedsuch students and provided

them with effectiveintervention based on theirspecific needs.

Although no one can agreeon a precise definition ofdyslexia the term covers arange of persistent reading andwriting difficulties. Symptomscan include reversing the orderof letters in a word or mixingup words in a sentence.

The students appreciate thewillingness to help by seniorsand other people in thecommunity. A successfulreader/writer partnership canallow a dyslexic student toperform close to their realisedpotential. Schools generally

can’t afford to pay for reader/writers so the volunteers whoact as reader/writers providevaluable support to a child andimprove that student’s chanceof gaining equality of educationopportunity. Many of them areretired but are willing to giveup their time to help the localcolleges to give the students theconfidence in the exams theydeserve.

The concept of writers is notnew. The Chinese mandarinsused to copy the students examanswers before giving them tothe emperor so the studentswriting was not recognised andavoided any display offavouritism.

Students with dyslexia, although intelligent, find thethree basic education subjectsreading, writing andarithmetic difficult and need ahelping hand. Jane a pupil fromone of the colleges quotes froma Shania Twain song to herreader/writers and teachers,“You’ve got a way with mesomehow you got me to believein everything that I could be.You gave me faith to find mydreams.”

It is hard for most of us tounderstand that there areyoung students who areconfused by some words thatmost of us take for granted.Great work that the seniors inthe community volunteer tobecome readers and writers forable students with speciallearning needs. The work theyundertake as a reader/writer isextremely valuable and makesa difference to the individual’sfuture and self-esteem.

In the garden withDoesn’t spring give you a feeling of a fresh start? The days become longer, the availablegardening hours increase and everything burstsinto new leaf and flower that make the coloursbrighter. It’s a happy time for gardeners whohave spent the winter planning their dreamoutdoor spaces.

The most interesting gardens are a mix of edibleand ornamentals so plant accordingly for bothto get their show. Edibles require the better partof 6 hours sun each day - those that wilt in toomuch light can easily be planted to tuck behindothers - but plan your vege plot to be in thesunniest summer position.

With the weather getting warmer so does thesoil which means you can start planting outyour spring kitchen garden if you live in a frostfree area. Plant radishes, beetroot, broccoli, carrot, lettuce, parsnip and pea seeds as wellas seedlings of globe artichoke, silverbeet, onion, lettuce, leeks and cabbage. Protectyoung plants from heavy spring rain and strongwinds with a cloche or shade cloth, lifting onwarm sunny days for maximum growth. Renewslug bait after heavy rain, and spray or waterwith a foliar seaweed spray to build plant health.

Rhubarb, passionfruit and tamarillos can all be

planted now too. Planting them in Tui Vegetablemix will give them an excellent head start.Want fresh new potatoes on your Christmastable? Plant now in large planter tubs, coverwith Tui Vegetable Mix and keep topping up asthey grow. Top dress with Tui Potato Food sixweeks after planting and keep well watered asthe weather warms up. Our favourites are SwiftRocket and Jersey Benne and don’t forget toplant some mint to keep them company in thecooking pot!

Hanging baskets and flowering pots makea warm welcome to your patio, deck or outsideliving space. Haul them out now and givethem a good clean, then plant your favouritessuch as petunias, calibrachoa, strawberries, gazanias and fuchsia for maximum wow factorthis summer. Geraniums both zonal and ivy aresure summer favourites and Tropical Impatienspotted up now will be a real show by Christmas.

Proud to be part of the construction of this amazing building

Senior Pastor Nigel Scott saidafter a gradual planningprocess, construction beganin January this year, seeingthe addition of a newauditorium, entrance foyerand office block.

He said car parking hasalso been improved, withadditional spaces andresealing.

Mr Scott said the church isworking to further theirposition as an integral partof the local community, with“our building now used forchurch-related activities andprograms” as well as usualSunday services.

We also have a number ofcommunity groups usingit every week, and theseextensions have opened upthe possibility for furthercommunity use,” he said.“Our aim is to be like a well inthis community.

“In ancient times, a well wasa focal point for the wholecommunity. Not only didpeople go there to drawessential water, they went thereto do life together.

“Likewise, we want people tocome here to do life together,as well as have the opportunityto draw the living water foundin Jesus Christ.

Society has used Memorials in varying waysto honour life since time began.

With about 80% cremation in this region, many people simply plan to scatter the ashesafter cremation, but in the end most needa place to go, a special place to remember, and usually end up putting up a permanentmemorial of some sort.

Over 20 years ago the cremation wall atParaparaumu Beach cemetery ran out ofroom and it was decided to place memorialplaques around an existing rose garden.

This idea caught on so quickly that withinonly a few months the garden plaques werefull and a new garden was needed. All thecemeteries in the district now have gardenswith plaques for people to either place theashes or simply have a special place to cometo.

For more information about memorials pleasecontact a Funeral Home listed who can referyou to a company that can help.

MURAL BRIGHTENS UP COLLEGE

COLOURFUL: The mural is inspired by the paintings of New Zealand artist NickyForman, who is a regionalist painter basing her work closely around herimmediate environment and constructing her paintings in a grid format.Paraparaumu College students Emily Flowers, Year 12, and Sam Wildblood, Year13, researched the Kapiti area for subject material and then composed their ownideas for a mural. Emily’s design was chosen for the final work, and both studentsthen worked on separate areas. They both gained level two credits for their effortsin creating an effective art work that is relevant to this area. The completed muralhas been installed in a prominent, well-used area of the college chosen by them.

Explosionrocks areaA very loud explosion at Paraparaumu Beachnorth on Friday were flares being blown up.

New Zealand Defence Force said anexplosive ordnance disposal team “disposedof three unserviceable KC25 marine markerrescue flares belonging to the coastguard, atthe request of the police”.

It said “A high explosive charge was usedto consume the items and negate theassociated risks”.

“The flares were considered not safe tostore, and moving them was notrecommended.”

There had been similar detonations in thearea in the past.

“This is the preferred, and safest option fordealing with these items.

“The task was carried out at the request of,and was managed by the police.”

Rob Jones, who lives at ParaparaumuBeach north, said the explosion shook thefamily house.

“We didn't have a clue what was going on.“It would have been a great idea if they had

warned the neighbourhood.”On the Kapiti News Facebook site, Barbara

Bailey said she was lifting a heavy items on toa trailer when the explosion happened.

“Nearly dropped it,” she said.Stacey Prince was teaching at Kapiti Learn

to Swim.“It was loud,” she said.Craig Edkins said “It sounded like

someone hitting the side of our shed.”

Car impoundedA 19-year-old man caught doing aburnout on Paraparaumu Beach in aSubaru WRX had his car impounded.

Constable Jim Dunlop, from theWellington road policing group, saidabout 50 to 60 boy racers, who had comefrom Wellington, congregated on thebeach near the Kapiti Boating Club onSunday about 4pm.

“It had been reported that severalcars were doing burnouts on the beach.

“By the time I got there the majorityhad stopped but there was one guy, about 50m to 100m away from the mainpack, doing donuts.

“When I stopped him and advisedhim it was illegal, he was quitesurprised, to find it was illegal, becauseas I informed him, the beach is stillclassified as a road.

“It was also quite dangerous as therewere a lot of people walking on thebeach.”

The man’s car was impounded for 28days and he was to appear in thePorirua District Court.

Invoices ontheir wayRatepayers in Otaki and most of Waikanae will besent their first water invoices in the last week ofSeptember. The district has been divided into three areas for

water meter reading and invoicing. Initial invoiceswill not cover a full three-month period while weestablish quarterly reading/invoicing cycles for eacharea. Subsequent invoices will cover three-monthlyperiods.A slight delay in posting invoices for Otaki and

most of Waikanae was due to extra processingchecks completed.Posting of invoices for the two other areas of thedistrict remains on schedule, as follows:■ the rest of Waikanae and Paraparaumu— earlyOctober (invoices will cover slightly less than a fullquarter)■ Raumati and Paekakariki — early November(invoices will cover slightly more than a full quarter). The same payment options for general rates are

available for water rates. These are listed on theback of your water invoice (remember to includeyour water account number in any payment details). If your water invoices are higher than you expect,

there are plenty of easy, no-cost things you can do tosave water at www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/water-conservationGeneral rates invoices are not posted at the same

time as water invoices and you will receive themseparately.

STUDENTS SUPPORT DAFFODIL DAY

A number of Kapiti College students havevolunteered their time to collectdonations to support the Cancer Society’sDaffodil Day.

Daffodil Day is a time to reflect, andremember all those that have been takenby cancer.

The school’s Year 12 Council came upwith the idea, and with help from headstudent team member Christey Blythen, they were able to help the Cancer Society,in the best way they knew how.

“It was more than just wanting to helpthat drove the students to spend fourhours outside various businesses inRaumati Beach shops, it was also thesense of community that incentivised thestudents,” Christey said.

“The students have all been affectedone way or another by cancer, with somefellow students being affected by the crueldisease.

“All students have been incrediblysupportive, with sell-out bake saleshelping to raise funds for the affected

students.“ But it was also out of love for affected

grandparents and family members aswell, that caused the students to be drivento donate their time to the charity andhelp raise hundreds of dollars for theCancer Society.

Meet Jerome. Despite his youth, Jerome has already lived a life crammed

with experiences. Unfortunately, many of those experiences put him

firmly on the wrong side of the law, and until very recently, Jerome

was just the sort of young man whose anti-social behaviour made him

someone to be avoided at all costs.

However, at YouthQuest he is exactly the sort of young man we

welcome with open arms because we know that they are not a lost

cause. We know that with our support and mentoring they have every

chance of turning their lives around. Jerome has done just that and now

makes an awesome contribution in his full time job with YouthQuest.

Thanks to the generous gesture of time and effort contributed

by the role models and mentors, YouthQuest courses are the

difference for many boys between finding a path or losing their

way during the testing years of being a teen. It’s this wealth of

shared knowledge and experience that sets up young boys like

Jerome to become young men with pride. It’s the knowledge and

experience that sets them on the path to being everything they

can be. The difference the YouthQuest programme has made to

Jerome is on the inside. It’s noir something that’s visible - unless

of course you can see the future.

Paraparaumu Beach Golf Clubgeneral manager Leo Barbergot to ply his trade at the PGATour’s prestigious BarclaysGolf Championship atRidgwood Country Club in NewJersey recently.

Accompanied bygreenkeeper Brett Smith,Barber accepted an invitationto volunteer for the event thatfeatured all of the world’s topgolfers, including worldnumber one Rory McIlroy.

“Basically, thesuperintendent of the coursehas played Paraparaumu Beachand just loves coming here,”Barber said.

“After his second visit, hetold me to ‘Get yourself to NewJersey, cut some greens for meand we’ll look after you andhave some fun’.”

The tournament featured astaggering 115 green’s staffwith Barber and Smithworking on the prized 18thhole.

“In my role as generalmanager at ParaparaumuBeach, I still relish theopportunity to get on the tools,so it was a great moment to bepushing a handmower inpreparation for such a bigoccasion.

“As someone whose passionis working the land, it was adream come true.”

Barber and Smith wereinvited to walk inside the ropesduring a practice round withformer US Masters Champion

Adam Scott and his Kapiticaddie Steve Williams.

“Steve Williams is still aspassionate about ParaparaumuBeach today as he was when heused to play here as a juniorand laments the fact that theNew Zealand Open has not

returned since he famouslybrought Tiger Woods here in2002.”

As golfers, getting a close-upview of the game played by theworld’s best was a treat, but asgreenkeepers, Leo Barberbelieves it is nothing short of

“Greenkeeping Disneyland.”“The money they pump into

setting up these hugetournaments is staggering andit’s a reminder of just how bigthe US PGA Tour is.

“Prize money alone for thisevent totalled $10 million, and

such a purse attracts the verybest players in the world.

“The most important thingto take away from working atsuch an incredible event, atsuch an impressive golf course,is that Paraparaumu Beachpunches well above its weightin terms of what we achievewith our budgets.

“To put it in perspective, they spent more on chemicalsin the week leading up to thetournament than we would doin two years,” Barber said.

Sacrificing personal leave togain such invaluableexperience was an easysacrifice for Barber.

“Learning new skills is soimportant, and one of thethings that I was veryimpressed with is how the UScourses are made to beexcellent from the moment youdrive through the gates untilthe moment you leave.

“The facilities, the courseitself, the service — it is alldone so brilliantly,” Barbersaid.

Having returned home andback to the comfort of thefamed links, Barber believesthe course at ParaparaumuBeach is close to being at itsbest.

“We were fortunate enoughto play world number tworanked Cypress Point courseand US Open venue WingedFoot.

“I’m not being biased when Isay that our greens are better.”
