German has three different forms of address in the second person:

Therefore, German also has three command forms. Addressing one friend: Geh nach Hause, Michael! Addressing two or moreGeht nach Hause, Michael und friends Mark!

In the formal command, the Sie- command, you use the third-person plural verb form (the infinitive form) in the first position, followed by the pronoun Sie.

Auf Englisch In English the phrase; there is refers to one thing,

there are to more than one thing. There is a supermarket nearby. There are two bakeries on this street.

Auf Deutsch In German, the phrase es gibt can refer to singular or

plural objects. The verb form never changes. Es gibt einen Supermarkt in der Nähe. Es gibt zwei Bäckereien in dieser Straße. Was gibt es in der Imbissstube?

In nquestions, the verb is in the first position, or in second position when the question begins with an interrogative.

Auf Deutsch You have already been using nicht to make negative

statements with verbs and adjectives.

Der Holger wohnt nicht in der Main Straße. Die Katze ist nicht weiß.

Earlier you learned that when negating English sentences containing noun phrases, you may either negate the noun phrase or the verb (That’s no excuse vs. That’s not an excuse).

In German, it is customary to negate the noun phrase, not the verb. The word used to negate the noun phrase (the equivalent of no) is kein.

Ich habe Zeit. I have time. Ich habe keine Zeit. I do not have time. (I have no

time)

Das ist ein Apfel. That is an apple. Das ist kein Apfel. That is not an apple.

(That is no apple) Kein is an ein-word. It has the same endings as all

the other ein-words (ein, mein, dein,ect.) and is part of the noun phrase.
