Thoughts from your State

Director

Dean and Karen Stewart

Spring has come and gone and now it is summer with fall in the future. It has been a tough spring for those of us in Kansas. Weather issues have caused numerous problems from water in campgrounds, cancellations and many other situations that have created a change in many plans. We hope that all have had some opportunity to get out and enjoy the camping experience. Since our last publication we have travelled to three spring rallies’ in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Texas, that has been Waco, but now it must move to another site as construction at the fairgrounds will make it impossible to have a rally there. They are in the process of securing a new location for their rally. Louisiana held their last State Rally this spring as they have decided to no longer have the State organization because they are down to only one chapter. The Arkansas Rally, although down in rigs attending, have elected their new State Directors, Bob

and Lisa Duckworth. Their term will begin January 1, 2020. After the Region Rallies we spent one weekend attending three Kansas Area Rallies. Area 4 in Winfield; Area 1 at Four Seasons RV Park near Abilene, and Area 2 at the McPherson RV Ranch. Each Area Rally was well attended, and all seemed to be having a great time catching up on conversations and, of course, lots of game playing. We are now in the middle of electing a new Kansas State Director. Currently, we do not have any results or nominations to share. It is extremely important to have leadership in our State Club. The part of not having a Director is not a good scenario as we would forfeit all monies to the parent organization. We have many great people within the Kansas Good Sam that could do the job. Sometimes it is just a matter of stepping up. This is true with being a Chapter President, helping at the Rally, or being a Staff Member. I will get off my soapbox now and plug the Fall Kansas RV Rally, Jungle Bash. What is that? I have been asked several times so we will try to put a spin on the theme. Have you ever heard of “it’s a jungle out there”, well that is one way to look at it or maybe the jungle can even be the living creatures living in the jungle? Sometimes I even think of my back yard as a jungle, with all the rain everything seems to grow faster that I can cut it down, On a lighter note it can be just a big JUNGLE PARTY. As some would say party on. Use your imagination as you prepare for the rig decoration contest. The Rally registration form is located on page 22 of this publication. Dates for the Rally are October 3-6, 2019, with Early Bird Parking starting at 1 PM on September 29, 2019. The Rally is held at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, KS. Hope you place these

dates on your calendar and plan to attend. This will be our last Rally as Directors and we would love to see you there. Our webmaster, Loretta Marlowe, has made great strides with our website. She has redesigned the site and it looks great. She has put a lot of time in creating this and I really appreciate her hard work on this endeavor. Thanks Loretta. If you haven’t looked lately you should check it out. You will be surprised at how much information you have at your fingertips. The website address is http://www.kansasgoodsams.org. I also need to highlight David Marlowe, our Good Sam News Editor. Without his great help this publication would not happen. For the past three years he has done a very good job with the paper. We can all help him by sending in our submissions on time so he can complete the paper on schedule. Also, do you know that advertisements help pay for this paper? You can help by selling ads in your area. Our State Committee Meeting was not well attended. We had less than half of our chapters represented. I was discouraged but we did have a productive meeting. I will be sending out the meeting minutes to all the chapter presidents later. This will be my last column as your State Director. The January issue will have a new Director. You will need to forward any information to him or her. Thank you all for supporting us through our two terms. We tried to do our best to provide all the information you could use to carry on the Good Sam ideals as we work hard to continue our State organization. As always, Make Your Journey Count

State Treasurer

([email protected])

Anyone remember the children’s Sunday School song, “The rains came down and the floods came up…” We were lucky here in McPherson. Lots of rain but no large hail and only a small creek that flooded. I know many of you are still cleaning up after being flooded. Seems like Kansas really holds true to the adage that it might be snowing one day and a heat wave the next. Now it appears we are in that heat wave. Ah, Kansas! Can you say RALLY RALLY RALLY RALLY RALLY!!! Jungle Bash is just around the corner! Waaaaa hooo! It is going to be fun at the old fairgrounds

again this year! There will be some great entertainment plus we have several seminars already scheduled. This is going to be a great one folks so find your jungle

hat and get your registrations sent in early, so you do not miss the registration deadline of September 15! Games start on Tuesday, so consider coming early so you don’t miss your favorite game. Registrations can be found in this newsletter on page 22 and on the state website – www.kansasgoodsams.org Mail it and the registration fee to me, Pat Nippert at 600 Penn Drive, McPherson, KS 67460 See you there!! Welcome new Good Sam members! We are so glad you have chosen to be a Good Sammer! (not sure sammer is a word but…) Good Sams is all about fellowship and being a Good Samaritan. Tell your friends about us. Bring them to the rally. They do not have to be a member of Good Sam to attend the rally. It is good fun for the whole family. Just a brief note — our state finances are in great shape. Our club is on solid

ground thanks to all of you. Keep up the recruiting for new members. Invite them to try us out by coming to the rally. Being a Kansas Good Sam member is the cheapest bargain in town. And our rally is the cheapest camping WITH entertainment you can find anywhere! PLUS…ICE CREAM!!! So, round up those potential new members! Treasurers – Just a reminder I will be sending out your 2019 roster in August so you can update it for 2020. You can give it to me with your members’ 2020 state dues at the rally. It is still only $10 per rig. You can make any changes to it at any time. I also urge you to attend the secretary/treasurer meeting at the rally. It will be listed on the schedule.

Happy Trails,

Pat

[email protected] Anyone who reads the staff listing will realize that Loretta and I live in a little, bedroom, community named Linwood. Yes, that is the same Linwood that was devastated by an EF4 tornado the evening of June 6th. We were lucky! Less than two miles down the street you begin to see the damage caused by the storm. As these storms have strange quirks. You have probably seen pictures over the years where a tornado has destroyed a house while the one next door is untouched. Well, that was how it was for us, we didn’t lose a single leaf from any tree. Many us have ridden out a severe thunderstorm in our RV like Dean

Stewart did the night before the staff meeting. We just sit there and feel the coach rock back and forth and the pounding of the rain on the roof. I sort of have a new opinion about riding out a storm in the RV. A neighbor who lives a few miles from us had a Newmar Mountainaire diesel pusher parked next to his garage. After the storm passed the frame of the coach was upside down in his front yard. I don’t know if they have found the body of the coach to this day! Our motorhome did prove invaluable, however. About 5 miles of power poles came down and there was an immediate blackout. As this is the 21st century, who has candles any more. We spent the rest of the evening in the coach watching the storm news on the TV. I fired up the generator and ran a long extension cord into the house. I added a power strip to provide power to a lamp and the refrigerator. Our water heater is super insulated so the hot water in the house lasted for three days, because we had no damage. I went to work as usual to the little “Mom & Pop” store in Bonner Springs. When I came home that night Loretta had added branches to the power line to have a cellphone charger and her computer, and a TV up and running. Great to have a motor home with a generator. We could have run for a week before hitting the low fuel mark, but the power came on after two and a half days. Any comments and/or questions for the editor? Feel free to call me or e-mail me any evening or all day on weekends (Yes, I still work full time)!

WANTED! I have been a Good Sam Life Member since the early 1980’s. My Life Member plaque, like me has fallen into disrepair over the years. I contacted Good Sam headquarters for a replacement and was firmly told that the plaques are obsolete (almost like me)! Therefore, if anyone has or knows someone who has “Hung Up the Keys” and would like to dispose of their Life Member plaque, please have them email me at [email protected]. **********************************************

ATTENTION WINTER SNOWBIRDS

If you are one of those RVers who heads south for the winter and do not have your mail held in January, February and March, please provide Pat Nippert your winter address or provide her with the information as to what you want done with your winter copy of the newsletter. If you do not do this the post office returns the newsletter to Pat and she has to pay the return postage fee. It is only a couple of dollars, but those dollars mount up!

FUTURE NEWSLETTERS

The deadline to submit information for the Winter 2020 issue will be January 18th. There have been many requests for a bigger newsletter with more pictures et cetera and it is my plan to accommodate those requests. Needless to say, it takes money to produce the newsletter. The average issue with printing and postage costs the state organization approximately $800. Thus, a larger and more inclusive issue will drive the costs even higher. So where will the money come from? The answer is simple! “SELL MORE ADS!

LOST WORDS FROM OUR

CHILDHOOD:

Submitted by Dean Stewart

Mergatroyd!... Do you remember that word? Would you believe the spell-checker did not recognize the word Mergatroyd? Heavens to Megatroyd! The other day a not so elderly (I say 75) lady said something to her son about driving a jalopy; and he looked at her quizzically and said, “What the heck is a Jalopy?” He never heard of the word jalopy!! She knew she was old…. But not that old. Well, I hope you are Hunky Dory after you read this and chuckle. About a month ago, I illuminated some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included: “Don’t touch that dial”, “Carbon Copy”, “You sound like a broken record”, and “Hung out to dry”. Back in the olden days we had a lot of moxie. We’d put on our best bib and tucker, to straighten up and fly right. Heavens to Betsy! Gee whillikers! Jumping Jehoshaphat! Holey moley! We were in like Flynn and living the life of Riley; and even a regular guy could not accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all the tea in China! Back in the olden days, life used to be swell, but when’s the last time anything was swell? Swell has gone the way of beehives, pageboys and the D.A.; of spats, knickers, fedoras, poodle skirts, saddle shoes, and pedal pushers.

Oh, my aching back! Kilroy was here, but he isn’t anymore. We wake up from what surely has been just a short nap, and before we can say, “Hell, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle!” Or, “This is a fine kettle of fish!” We discover that words we grew up with, the words that seemed omnipresent, as oxygen, have vanished with scarcely a notice from our tongues and our pens and our keyboards. Poof go the words of our youth, the words we’ve left behind. We blink, and they are gone. Where have all those great phrases gone? Long gone: Pshaw, the milkman did it. Hey! It’s your nickel. Don’t forget to pull the chain. Knee high to a grasshopper. Well, Fiddlesticks! Going like sixty. I’ll see you in the funny papers. Don’t take and wooden nickels. Wake up and smell the roses. It turns out there are more of these lost words and expressions than Carter has liver pills. This can be disturbing stuff! (Carter’s Little Liver Pills are gone too!) We of a certain age have been blessed to live in changeable times. For each new word is like a shiny toy, a toy that has no age. We at the other end of the chronological arc have the advantage of remembering there are words that once did not exist and there are words that once strutted their hour upon the earthly stage and are now heard no more, except in our collective memory. It’s one of the greatest advantages of aging. Leaves us to wonder where Superman will find a phone booth… See ya later, alligator! Oki-doki! WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE FABULOUS 50’S..NO ONE WILL EVER HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY AGAIN…WE WERE GIVEN ONE OF

The Konza Kampers started the year with lunch at the Early Edition restaurant and then on to Earl and Kathryn Baugher’s home for our business meeting. After this, we enjoyed playing games and had a good time. Our February lunch group met at Carlos O’Kelly’s and then on to Marie McConnell’s for our business meeting and social time. March found us at the Blue Moose restaurant for lunch and then to Brent and Marcia Boring’s for dessert, a business meeting and then social time was enjoyed. In April, we drove to Westmoreland and had lunch at the South Forty. After lunch, we drove to Olsburg to Ray and Marci Innes home for our monthly business meeting, dessert and social time.

0 The Area 1 Rally was held at the Four Seasons RV Park and Campground from April 25th through the 28th. Our chapter had 7 rigs present and part of the time 100% of our members were present. We enjoyed the fellowship and a variety of games. Our entertainment on Saturday evening was the women’s quartet called “The 4 Gems”. They were excellent! The weather was nice, and we had a great time. We didn’t have a meeting in May as many had graduations and other family gatherings to attend to. On June 5th, five rigs from our Chapter attended the Nebraska State Rally in Hastings. Everyone enjoyed the program and games. The weather was nice for the most part and we enjoyed a tail wind going home. On June 13th, we met for lunch at the Early Edition restaurant and then went to the Baugher’s home for our desert, business meeting and social time. We are looking forward to more summer campouts at Westmoreland, Washington and Beatrice, Nebraska. We wish you all a great season. Salina Sams

May Creech The Salina Sams had a great winter of monthly dinners with nearly always 100% attendance of members and honorary members. Most of our dinners were held at the Kansas Buffet in Salina. The buffet allows our choices of food to be ready for us. We sit together in a side room and can have our meeting and socialize in private. Our camping season opened with a campout in the Minneapolis City Park in April with four rigs attending. We make use of the Boy Scout building for visiting and games.

The Area 2 campout was held at the McPherson RV Park, April 25-28. The May campout was held at the Rock Pond Park in Belleville, Kansas. There were 4 rigs present including two guests from Nebraska. This facility has full hookups with a nice view of the lake. We toured the Boyer Museum there and saw wonderful moving animated figures. Our plans for lakeside campouts have been flooded out for now, however we will find dry land at Spring Lake near Halstead for our June campout. We welcome other Good Sams campers to join us. Call our president or me at 785-825-6070.

Smoky Valley Sams

May Creech As the weather warms up, we are ready to hit the road for another season of great camaraderie with our friends. We enjoyed our monthly dinners at various restaurants in Salina. Our season opened with the Area campout at Four Seasons Campground near Abilene, Kansas in April. We don’t meet in May because of graduations. We are looking forward to our June campout at Washington, Kansas where we will view the KSDS facilities. We will have a tour and a demonstration at this service dog training center. We camp on the second weekend of each month in North Central Kansas. We invite other Good Sams campers to

Serendipity Sams

Donna Mills-Bird Serendipity’s as well as other clubs have had some meeting challenges in 2019. JANUARY – we had a snowstorm but were able to meet in Mt. Hope, Kansas at a small-town café and it was fun! February we were iced in and had to cancel! March, we met at the Pizza Ranch and not only ate but learned some facts about Saint Patrick’s Day. April was the first camp out of the year, and we met at the McPherson RV Park and it was the Area 2 Rally also. A great meeting and a fair turnout. (Our

camper was broke ).

May campout was cancelled due to all

the flooding at Council Grove.

Serendipity Sams and the Cowboy Sams

met again at the McPherson RV Park.

The meeting had a great turnout.

Serendipity have plans in the works to

do a luncheon at the State Rally.

As we speak, the Serendipities that could go are in Claremore, OK. The plan is to visit the Tulsa area. Due to all the flooding some of our camping places have changed and some of our group have battled water, health, and camper problems bout we have been pushing through. We have a new member and two other couples that have contacted us and are trying to hang with us. We are still donating to KSDS. They are very dear to our hearts.

2 We have our walker that started his journey in June again hoping to finish with 1700 miles more. Our prayers are with him and his wife for safe travels and good health. Glenn Koster is walking to raise awareness about foster care. The July and August camp outs are in the works for where there may be something new. Hope to see everybody at the Kansas State Good Sam Rally in October.

JANUARY – We had quite a group that gathered to welcome in the New Year at the Hereford House in Shawnee, KS. Always nice to have a private room. FEBRUARY – Again a good number gathered at JT’s Grill & Bar in DeSoto, KS. We were delighted to visit with one of our former members who decided to join us. MARCH – As most of us know, March winds blow, and we may have snow…well that was true this March! We only had two, brave, rigs to weather the storm and head to Osage Prairie RV Park in Nevada, MO. In spite of the weather, which by the way was better there than at home, had a great time. We were able to sit outside and visit. APRIL – Didn’t plan a campout for April but schedule two for May. MAY – Eleven rigs headed to Michigan Valley COE, Pomona, KS. Rain was in

the forecast and rain it did! Terrible flooding everywhere in route. In fact, while we were there, we watched the lake rise up over two roads. Really feel for the farmers in the Midwest area. We did discover a new Friday night eating place. The Lamont Hill, good food and good service. In fact, we decided to go back for another meal. We did have our Potluck on Saturday night. Ladies played cards and some of the guys played horseshoes. After everyone arrived home, we learned that one of our members was taken to the hospital and ended up having triple bypass surgery the next day. Live today…don’t put off until tomorrow…Good news, he is doing very well and hopefully will be “On the Road Again” very soon! Nine rigs headed to Monzango Lake Campground in Maryville, MO. This was a new one to most of us. A beautiful area and NO RAIN!!! We were high and dry in spite of the high water on the lake. We officially welcomed our new members with their sign and Cedar Tree. Friday night we dined at A & G, a Greek restaurant in Maryville. Saturday morning, the guys fixed breakfast at the shelter before we had our meeting. Saturday night Potluck was held at the shelter. We always have so much food. The ladies played card games and the guys threw bean bags. Such a great group of friends! We have all turned in our “Wish Lists” for next year’s camping season. The COG committee will get together and combine the best of the entries submitted and put together a list to be voted on at our Annual Meeting in August. REMAINING 2019 Camping Schedule

JANUARY — Our new year started at Van’s Steak House in Baxter Springs. It had been a while since we had been there. The weather was really good for January made it nice for travelling. We had seven couples there and enjoyed a tasty meal and visited with everyone to catch up on their Christmas good times. We discussed and voted to donate $100 to the Shriner’s Transportation Dads as a memorial to Gary Johnson who passed away in December. We collected monies for members birthdays/anniversaries. We always try to start planning our camping trips for the year early as usually some are always rescheduled. February — Took us to Chinese Chef in Parsons, Kansas. We had six couples

there for some great Chinese food. However, our back-meeting room was colder than it was outside, so we had to ask for some assistance for some heat! Four of us, Jackie, Sharon, Jan and Mark took a trip one day and visited Toronto State Lake to check it out as some of us had never been there. We were really impressed and decided to make it one of our camping destinations. MARCH — Well the March campout was cancelled due to weather, but we did go ahead and have a great meal at Poor Boy’s Restaurant in Thayer, Kansas. We did have three guests at that very short meeting and dinner. But we are like the scouts, always ready to change and be prepared. APRIL — There were nine campers at Elmore Park in Chetopa, Kansas. This is one of our favorite places to camp because of it being quiet, a new bathroom/shower facility and patrolled by police. We collected for birthdays and anniversaries. We really have some good cooks and always seem to come up with something different to try each month. We played some cards and visited. We also had a campfire going so we could have some Smores. They are really good, but messy! Jan reminded everyone to continue to save the Best Choice labels. MAY – The May campout was held at Altamont Lake. There were seven units in attendance. Jan Gibson was unable to attend due to having back surgery. It sure was a wet weekend, therefore some activities changed. Some of the group went into Altamont and did some shopping at an antique shop. It was reported that they have some pretty good things in there. SO due to the weather being so wet everyone decided to go to the Chinese Chef in Parsons for supper. It was decided to move the June campout to the weekend of June 28 –

4 30 due to the Kansas State Staff and Presidents meeting in Hutchinson the weekend of our regular campout. Jackie Ward and Jan Gibson will be attending the Presidents meeting for the Meadowlark Chapter. So that about covers the first part of the year for us. Hopefully all the rain has passed, and we can have some sunshine at our next campouts. Travel safe and have a great summer. Be kind to each other.

Sunflower Sams

Jean Brown The January 12, 2019 Sunflower Sam’s Chapter of the Good Sam Club meeting was called off due to 4-plus inches of snow that fell in the Kansas City metro area. The members in Eastern Kansas didn’t want to venture out over to Lee’s Summit, Missouri for Jumpin’ Catfishes’ great meals! On January 19th, President Craig Kelsey and wife Patti hosted “Game Night” in their home for whoever of the Sunflower Sam’s wanted to come. Several members came with “Finger Food” and braved the cold low temperatures. It was a fun game night! Yet we’re all ready for Spring weather and the camping season! Enough of snow and blasting cold winds!! On Saturday, February 9, 2019, at noon the Sunflower Sam’s met at the La Mesa Mexican Restaurant in Lansing, Kansas. Again, snow and ice covered the ground, but the highways and streets were clean and clear. So, 29 members and 1 guest, Jim Larkin, were present when President Craig Kelsey opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. The food was very good as was the service. The only problem was the very long table so we in the center could not visit with either end of the table unless we got up and moved

around. Overall it was an enjoyable day to see members we ha d not been with since last October. There wasn’t much to discuss during the business meeting, but two “Thank You” letters were tuned in: Cancer Action for the monetary gift, and the Sunflower House for the gift of snacks and individual dinks, for the children to enjoy. (Sunflower House is a clearing house for abused children.) There was a 50-50 ticket drawing sale to help pay for shelters at the campgrounds. The winners were John and Martha Nash. The 479th meeting of the Sunflower Sam’s was held on March 9, 2019, at the Rodeo Mexican Restaurant in Basehor, Kansas. President Craig Kelsey called the meeting to order by having the members say the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag. There were 35 members present who all enjoyed the Mexican food! There were three guests: Dave and Colleen Dankenbring, and Jim Larkin, an honorary past member. Birthdays, anniversaries, and Health & Well Being were observed. Not much business was discussed. The 50-50 drawing was won by Jay Woods & Jane Sauve’ who received $37 while $38 went to pay for campground shelters. The meeting was adjourned. Saturday, March 16, Craig and Patti Kelsey again hosted “Game Night” in their home. Twelve members of the Sunflower Sams brought “finger food” and different games to play. It was thoroughly a fun evening! Everyone is looking forward to camping season starting in April! On Saturday, April 13, 2019, President Craig Kelsey opened the Sunflower Sam’s Club meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 16 Sunflower Sams members in attendance at Crossroads RV Park near Lyndon, Kansas. The Treasurer’s Report stated that after paying for the shelter at

5 Melvern Lake, the treasury is stable. Wagon Master Del Miller Jr. let everyone know that the Lewis & Clark State Park in Missouri, near Atchison, Kansas was flooded and closed for the rest of the year so it was decided by the campground committee to go to Watkins Mill State Park near Excelsior, Missouri on June 7 – 9, 2019. April Birthdays & Anniversaries were observed. Health & Well Being: Dick Dehn was home from a hospital stay; Loren Brown had Rotator Cuff Surgery on his right shoulder. Well wishes were sent to them. Friday evening the group went to Ann’s Diner (the ole 50’s diner) in Lyndon, Kansas for great food and fun. The Saturday evening meal was Hobo Stew (or Two Can Stew as we like to call it). As Debbie Haney said, “it sounds Gross, but it tastes Great”! Vice President Lloyd Hoobler called the May meeting of the Sunflower Sams Club to order on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at Melvern Lake’s Outlet Park, Kansas. An early Pancake Breakfast was served by the Hoobler’s with Joanne doing the cooking of the Flapjacks. Everyone brought side dishes to top off the pancakes! 25 members enjoyed the meal. It was announced that there is no shelter at June’s campout at Watkins Mill State Park in Missouri, so bringing “Pop-Up” canopies will be needed. In need of a new badge maker, Gary Pashman brought samples of name tags for selection. We were sad to hear that the Pony Express Travelers chapter of the Good Sam Club had dissolved. It was suggested that we establish a “Game Tub” of outdoor games we could carry to each campout. Three members volunteered to move the tubs from campout to campout. We are to bring our games to the June campout. Birthdays & Anniversaries were observed. Health & Well Being: Loren Brown is in Physical Therapy and Jean Brown is recovering from the Shingles.

The June Campout will be at Watkin’s Mill State Park near Excelsior Springs, Missouri. The Sunflower Sams Chapter of the Good Sam Club met at Watkin’s Mill State RV Park, MO on June 8, 2019. President Craig Kelsey called the meeting to order by asking Chaplin Patti Kelsey to say a prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag. Roll Call: There were 15 Sunflower members with one guest, while Amego, Dehn, and Brown drove in for the meeting. The Treasurer’s report was given. Wagon Master Del Miller, Jr. asked who planned to go to Treasure Lakes Resort in Branson, MO, in October; and who were planning to go to the Great Escape RV Resort near Higginsville, MO for the July campout. Plans were made to eat out on Friday evening and have a Potluck Supper Saturday evening. The Browns plan on hosting the pancake Breakfast on Saturday morning around 8 AM. Dick and Donna Dehn have sold their motorhome but Dick is still planning on handling the Membership Committee. There was no Kansas State Good Sam Report. The Game Tub subject was discussed and voted to drop. All are being charged to bring their own games to the campouts. June Birthdays & Anniversaries were observed. Health & Well Being: Loren Brown is “getting along” with his PT; and Anita Meyers is in PT with her new prothesis; Sue Amego is awaiting biopsy results.

NINNESCAH GOOD SAMS

Susan Grimes

Our club started the year with a lunch at the Golden Corral and then met at the Quinton home for our business meeting, card playing, and fellowship. Since we had no, new, officers, everything went well with the meeting! February found us around a table at the Country Kitchen in Park City before heading to the Gene Bender home for our afternoon of fellowship and the chapter meeting. In March, we met at the Tucker home in Mulvane for a soup lunch with sides prepared by the rest of the club. At this meeting, we began to plan our summer campouts. Finally, April arrived, and we had our first campout at our Area 4 Rally in Winfield. It was good to see everyone, and all enjoyed the activities. Our club cooked the Friday morning pancake and sausage breakfast, we called bingo, had a craft session, and provided a skit on Saturday evening. Our craft was to make a patriotic wreath with a wire wreath and red, white and blue clothes pins. White starts decorated the blue clothespins. We had a picture to submit but could not get it from the phone to the email! So much for us old folks. May saw too much rain and storms for our group to feel comfortable to go on a camp out so we cancelled the camp out and met at the Golden Corral again and then went to the Quinton home for our business meeting and card playing. In June we changed some of the camping plans and decided to go to Oxford since we had reserved a shelter house there for May and didn’t use it. We will head to Oxford on the 27th of

June, but the shelter house with the fireplace may not seem as inviting as it would have been in a cooler season. We will probably still light a fire at least once just to say we did it! Our favorite place to camp will find us there again in July. Spring Lake is our July spot and we always have fun there. Happy Camping, Everyone! Be Safe and Be Happy! ROVING GOOD SAMS

Gayle Williamson

Our group of camping friends keep in touch with monthly gatherings with food!!. We always did enjoy eating together! In June, Dan Cutting gave us a tricky test over how well we knew each other. Karen Williams had the best memory. Then he awarded very humorous "Certificates of Achievement" like Top Telephone Talker of the Year Best Person at Absolutely Nothing Most Welcome Sleepover Friend (doesn't snore or pass gas!!) Top-Notch Remote-Control Controller After all those laughs, we got down to a serious game of dime Bingo. Good for the winners, bad for the losers. . ROVING GOOD SAMS was chartered on August 25, 1979. Vi Henry was a Charter member forty years ago. Bill Williamson organized a revitalization around 2001 and membership grew. It's been quite a ride.

The Rally in 2014 when the Chapter received the 35th Anniversary Certificate.

QUICK RESPONSE CODE

You may have noticed this strange symbol below the webmaster’s name. What the heck is it? With the rise of the Smartphone, you know those Apple and Android machines a quick way of obtaining information was utilized from a system that went into industrial use over 30 years ago. It is called a “QR Code” short for “Quick Response Code”. Back in 1994 the QR Code was invented for use in the automotive industry to track assembly information of new vehicles. Today QR Codes are found everywhere. In newspapers, magazines, store price tags and many others.

The little “Mom and Pop” store I work for got rid of all their price scanners and offer an “APP” for people to install on their Smartphones to obtain product pricing. I don’t want to get on a soapbox but the way the world is going if you don’t have a Smartphone you will be left behind. Below there is a copy of a “Work In Progress” for Good Sam Region IV. When finalized there will be a QR Code for each state organization. Just scan with your Smartphone and it will take you right to that state’s website. I do not know how well the QR Code will printout for this newsletter. I can tell you it works on my rough draft. I can scan the QR Code and it takes me immediately to www.kansas goodsams.org. The attendees at the June Staff Meeting had a chance to play with this and it work for them so all you have to do is rush out and buy a Smartphone and you will be all set!!

Area 2

Submitted by: Dave & Carmie Berndt Darrell Genereux Ann Tennant

The first Area 2 campout was held at the McPherson RV Ranch on April 27, 2019. Area 2 consists of the Cowboy Sams Chapter, the Fort Larned Chapter, the Heartland Sams Chapter, the Kansas Military Sams Chapter, the Salina Sams Chapter, the Serendipity Chapter, and the Rising Cloud Sams Chapter. The chapters represented at the rally were the Cowboy Sams, Salina Sams, Serendipity Sams, and the Rising Cloud Sams. Darrell Genereux called the meeting to order and welcomed the Chapters that were represented. Darrell discussed the funds that the old Districts still had. It was decided to divide the money between the Chapters in the old districts. Darrell wanted us to decide where we wanted to and when. There were several places discussed and Gail Hulse was asked if she would check with Russell, Kansas to see if

they would have enough room for the Area 2 campout to be held April 23-26, 2020. State Director Dean Stewart stated that he has the entertainment set up or the Kansas State Rally in October. This year’s theme is “Jungle Bash” (see Dean’s report for details). Everyone needs to remember to send their registration for the Rally to Pat Nippert before September 15th. The Rally will be held October 3-6, 2019 at the Hutchinson State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas. Darrell introduced our guest which was Gayle & Kay’s daughter. The white elephant door prizes were given out and opened. Thank you all for bringing these gifts. Members will be notified as to when and where the next meeting of Area 2 will be held. The meeting was closed and fun was had by all.

BEFORE YOU BLOW YOUR “BREAKER”

Take a minute and see how many AMPS you could be using in your RV’s 30 or 50 AMP electrical system. It’s surprising how fast the AMPS add up which causes your breaker of the RV park’s breaker to “TRIP”. Knowing the AMPS of all the electrical appliances in your RV can help you manage electrical use and prevent the inconvenience of “MY ELECTRICTY WENT OUT”. This is a list of typical electrical appliances used and the average AMPS they require. Air Conditioner………………………..12.5 amps Hair Dryer………………10.0 amps Converter (with nothing in use)………1.5 amps TV…………..……………..2.0 amps Electric Water Heater (6 gals)…..…..12.5 amps Dirt Devil Hand Vacuum..2.0 amps Electric Refrigerator……………….….4.0 amps Electric Frying Pan….…10.0 amps Microwave Oven……………………..12.5 amps Iron……………….……….10 amps Electric Coffee Pot……………..……..9.0 amps Food Processor…….……6.0 amps Toaster Oven….……………………..10.0 amps Crock Pot…………….…..1.5 amps In the morning if your air conditioner and hot water heater are on . . . you start your coffee pot, make some toast and watch TV – you are pulling 55 amps. If you cooked bacon in the microwave at that time, LOOK OUT! Most newer RV’s have a switch so you can only run the microwave OR the water heater at one time – BUT MOST DO NOT HAVE THIS FEATURE. Most electrical products show how many watts or amps it takes to operate on the product itself or in the instructions. If it shows the watts, divide the watts by 120 (volts) and that gives you the amps. To get watts, multiply the amps by 120 (volts). Note that 110, 115, or 120 in the electrical world is the same thing! It’s worth your time to take an inventory on the ‘amps’ each electrical item uses. Then you can manage your total usage at one time and greatly reduce the anxiety of “MY ELECTRICITY WENT OUT”. NOTE: Do I really have a 30 amp or 50 amp coach? The simple answer is NO! The 30 amp or 50 amp rating is the maximum amps the breaker can handle on energizing the circuit. After being heated by the flow of electricity your breaker can only handle 80% of its rating before tripping, thus you really have a 24 amp or a 40 amp coach before the lights go out. Contributed by Pat Nippert
