STRANGE DAY EVENS SERIES--It isn’t often that a starting pitcher throws just one pitch and the bullpen is in charge the rest of the way, but for the first time in Kansas City history that very scenario occurred as Danny Duffy couldn’t get past pitch one due to a sore left shoulder...the host Yankees then plated six runs against a pair of KC relievers to take a 6-2 decision and even this series...Duffy, who entered the day third in the A.L. in ERA, threw ball one to Jacoby Ellsbury and then left the affair...Liam Hendriks, a starter by trade, entered and was solved for a first inning run and then three more over his 4.0 innings to absorb the loss...Casey Coleman then gave up a pair in his inning of work, before handing it over to Brandon Finnegan, who made his big league debut and retired all six Yankees he faced, highlighted by strikeouts of Ellsbury and Derek Jeter...Finnegan was KC’s first round pick this past June...there is never a good time to lose, but the Tigers also incurred a loss yesterday to keep the Royals two games up in the Central. RUBBER GAMES FEW AND FAR BETWEEN--Today’s series finale in Yankee Stadium is the first rubber game for the Royals in over a month and the 14th of the year...the last series deciding contest prior to today was on August 3 in Oakland, when James Shields prevailed over Scott Kazmir to give the Royals a 10-3 advantage in rubber games...Kansas City has been stellar on the road in rubber games, going 6-2 with wins in Baltimore, San Diego, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Chicago and Oakland and losses in Anaheim on May 25 and Cleveland on July 6...last season, the Royals went 11-8 in rubber games, but were just 4-6 on the road. THE BRIEFEST OF OUTINGS--Yesterday was the 7,294th game in franchise history, but the first time that a starting pitcher didn’t get credit for facing at least one hitter before departing...Danny Duffy made it through only one pitch before leaving the field with a sore left shoulder, leaving the contest up to the long men in the pen... yesterday was the 12th time in franchise history that a starting pitcher did not record an out in the first inning, the first time since July 22, 1992, when Rick Reed allowed a run on two hits and a walk...the previous shortest outing by a starter was July 8, 1987, when Danny Jackson walked the leadoff man and then came out of the game. FINNY CAPS QUICK RISE--By appearing in yesterday’s game, Brandon Finnegan became the third player in franchise history to make his Major League debut in the same season he was drafted...the #1 pick this past June out of TCU, Finnegan joined Jeff Granger in 1993 as the only two first round picks to appear in the same season they were drafted, while Bo Jackson was a fourth round pick in 1986 and made it to “The Show” later that year...it was an impressive debut for the 21-year old southpaw, who recorded 2.0 perfect innings, including strikeouts of Jacoby Ellsbury and Derek Jeter in his first big league inning of work. STILL SOLID ROAD CLUB--Saturday’s loss to the Yankees dropped KC’s road ledger to 40-30, still good for the second most road wins and winning percentage in the American League...the Royals started the year 0-5 away from ‘The K’, but has gone 40-25 since, including a 14-5 mark since July 22...KC is unbeaten in its last six road series, winning stops in Chicago, Oakland, Arizona, Minnesota and Texas and splitting a 2-game set in Denver vs. the Rockies...last year’s club won 42 road games. SHIELDS JOINS RAREFIED AIR--James Shields once again proved his durability on Friday night with 8.1 innings of shutout ball and when he made it through the eighth, he hit the 200.0-inning mark for the eighth consecutive time in his career...since 1980, ‘Juego G’ is one of only eight hurlers to attain 200.0 innings in at least eight straight seasons joining Mark Buehrle (13 times and 25.0 innings shy of 14), Greg Maddux (14), Frank Viola (10), Mike Mussina (9), Livan Hernandez (8), Mark Langston (8) and Tom Candiotti...the Tigers’ Justin Verlander is 22.0 inning short of his eighth straight such year. Hitting Notes (Cont.)

This & ThatHAPPY BIRTHDAY WADE--Kansas City’s outstanding reliever, Wade Davis, is celebrating his 29th birthday today...he shares his birthday with the Cleveland Cavs Kevin Love (26), actor and “Major League” third baseman Corbin Bernsen (60).THE RACE IS ON--Kansas City’s season mark fell to 78-62 with yesterday’s loss, but since July 22, the Royals have posted a Major League best 30-12 record and reversed an 8-game deficit in the Central into their current 2-game lead...a win today would give Kansas City its 12th series victory out of the last 14 played, with the club taking sets in Chicago, vs. Oakland (home and road), Minnesota (two at home and one on the road), at Arizona, at Texas, vs. San Francisco and winning a series at home vs. Cleveland before dropping the lone set in this span to the Tribe last weekend...the only series split was a 2-game stop in Colorado.REMAINING WORK--Kansas City enters today with 22 games remaining on the 2014 docket, which includes the completion of the suspended game on September 22 with KC trailing 4-2 in the 10th...the Tigers are down to 20 games left while Cleveland, who enters today five back, have 22 to go, also including the suspended contest...KC’s remaining opponents include the Indians (3+ suspended game), today vs. the Yankees, the White Sox (7), Boston (4) and Detroit (6)...meanwhile, aside from the six with the Royals, Detroit has Cleveland (3), San Francisco (1), Minnesota (7) and the White Sox (3).NEXT STOP MOTOWN--The Royals will head to Detroit for a trio of games in Comerica Park beginning tomorrow at 3:05 (CDT) due to a scheduling conflict that also has the Detroit Lions opening their season next door against the New York Giants...KC has scuffled against their A.L. Central rival in 2014, going 4-9 vs. the Tigers, but three of those victories occurred during Kansas City’s last visit to Comerica Park in June.THE TERRIFIC TRIO--Much of Kansas City’s success can be traced to the seventh, eighth and ninth innings thanks to the trio of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, respectively...only Davis worked here on Friday night, as he was summoned to finish up the contest due to a tight triceps that sidelined Holland for a day...Davis responded with a pair of strikeouts for his first save as a professional...the trio has combined to allow just 3 earned runs in 70.0 innings in this big league best 30-11 span that began on July 22 for a 0.39 ERA while fanning 76 and holding the opponents to a collective .152 average (36-for-237)...Herrera has a streak of 26.2 consecutive scoreless frames alive, which spans his last 27 outings...the only pitcher in baseball with a longer active streak is Davis, who is in the midst of a 31-appearance streak with 28.2-straight shutout innings...Holland is the only one of the three to be scored upon, allowing 3 earned runs in 21.2 innings (1.25 ERA) since July 22, but has converted 17 of his last 18 save chances, including his 16th consecutive conversion on Wednesday night for his 42nd rescue.FEW CHALLENGES BY KC--Manager Ned Yost has asked for just eight reviews in Kansas City’s last 61 contests, and none in the last 12 games...the last KC challenge was on August 24 in Arlington when Yost won a reversal on a double play call...he and the Royals have been extremely successful this year, going 20-12 in reviews (63%)...on the flip side, KC’s opponents have gone 15-for-36 (42%) in replay challenges.SHARPENING THE SHORT GAME--The Royals had one infield hit yesterday and enter today’s action tied with Texas for the league lead with 136...Kansas City has four in the Top 7 individually in infield knocks with Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain tied for fifth with 23, followed closely by teammates Jarrod Dyson and Nori Aoki tied for ninth (22)...KC is also among the elite in bunt hits with 21 on the season, third most in the American League behind Cleveland and Texas.FOUR WOULDN’T HAVE MATTERED--Kansas City has plated only three runs in this series, but it’s been good enough for a split to this point thanks to the efforts of James Shields and Wade Davis here on Friday...yesterday’s 6-2 loss dropped the Royals to 16-53 when scoring fewer than four runs...conversely, the club is 62-9 when scoring at least four...since the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City is an astounding 126-23 when scoring four or more.DAVIS AMONG BASEBALL’S ELITE--Wade Davis was asked to earn his first professional save here on Friday night and he did so with a pair of strikeouts to extend the Majors’ longest scoreless inning streak to 28.2, while his season ERA of 0.72 is tops in the Majors among all hurlers who have thrown at least 40.0 innings...the last run Wade allowed was on June 25th and has been the lone run surrendered in his last 50.0 innings for a 0.18 ERA dating back to April 26...since giving up two earned runs on April 5, Wade has allowed only two runs over his last 55 outings (57.0 innings) for a 0.32 ERA, while fanning 89...he opened the year going almost four full months without allowing an extra-base hit, but Minnesota’s Kurt Suzuki spoiled the streak with a double on July 31.HOLLY GETTING A REST--Greg Holland has had the last couple days off to rest a tight triceps, but the KC closer still ranks second in the A.L. with 42 saves...he is the first to record back-to-back 40-save seasons for KC since Dan Quisenberry did it in 1983 (45) and ‘84 (44)...Holly has made good of 42 of his 44 tries this year, including 35 of the last 36 and 16 in a row...over a longer haul, Holland has converted 82 of his last 85 attempts (96.5%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has five more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel -
