  • Growing up there was many a day spent at Klamm Park, watching baseball and more baseball.

Dad was a baseball fanatic playing in the minor leagues, coaching Ban Johnson and then

3&2. Going to the Royals was always a treat with Dad teaching me how to read the game and

plenty of popcorn and frosty malts. Life was great. Add in soccer the sport my boys grew

up with and played year round. Watching them go from the group ball days into high school

and club games, it pulled me in as a tried and true fan. And now there is nothing like the

experience of being at Sporting Park where we cheer We Believe That We Will Win! With

the excitement of the 2015 seasons for both our boys in blue, youll want to be sure to have

the newest items take a peek at what we found (pages 66-69).

Enjoying sports from the comfort of our homes is a favorite pastime and there are many who

are getting ready to look for a new home. With the KC HBAs Spring Parade of Homes just

around the corner, nows the perfect time to find the home of your dreams. David Cooper with

Better Homes & Gardens Kansas City Homes gives tips on making sure your dream matches

your needs (page 16) and KC offers many communities that meet both for you (page 47).

With spring upon us, living healthy adds an ease of effort with the longer days and warmer

weather. Were excited to add a new aspect to our magazine MDKC (page 71). Different

topics each issue that will give insight to whats new in the health field. And for those of us who

LOVE coffee, you now can love what that cup of joe does for you (page 76).

    THAT MEETS YOUR NEEDS

    FINDING THE

    DREAM HOME

  • KCHS:

COOPER: To make sure that you will be happy with your choice

of home, you have to consider many elements, such as budget,

location, and lifestyle. If any one of those is too far out of where

you need it to be, it can cause a real problem. So it really starts

    with knowing those things.

    KCHS:

COOPER: That really depends on what stage of life they are in and

what they need from the home. A single person or young couple

might want to be in a more urban environment near work and

entertainment. If they anticipate growing a family, they may want

to live in a home with room to grow near highly rated schools. A

senior may want amenities such as shopping nearby.

    KCHS:

COOPER: Choosing a home is an emotional process, and buying

a home is an emotional process as well as an emotional investment.

It is easy to get caught up in that and get a bit swept away. We look

for our dream home, but our dream home may not be the one that

fits our needs. We have to consider our lifestyle, and choose one

based on meeting lifestyle needs. If you have a family but want to

retain some privacy, you may want a master bedroom on a different

floor from other bedrooms. If you are a senior you may want to

downsize, or have a home on one, highly accessible level. If you are

active and social, living in the country might drive you crazy even

if that is what youve thought would fit you. Maybe you dreamed of

a huge property, but the busyness of your life would not leave room

to maintain or enjoy it. Once you know what you need to fit your

lifestyle, it is easier to narrow down your options.

    KCHS:

COOPER: Start asking around. Talk to friends and family and ask

about the things that matter to you, such as stores, restaurants,

healthcare, recreation, education, and entertainment. Search online

and look for online community groups and ask people that already

live in the area what they like, or dislike, about the area. Even a

perfect house may not be a good match if the area does not meet

    your lifestyle needs.

Abundant light is the ideal backdrop for todays urban industrial design trends, a driving force in

2015 window style trends. Today, glass is an integral and highly desirable design feature.

Glass, glass, and more glass is the current window trends we are seeing right now, asserted

Troy Beeler, of Kansas City Millwork.

Window design closely follows home and interior design trends and today, consumers are looking

for ways to increase light and make windows the focal point of their design that highlights all other

elements. Smart, new, architectural designs which make the most of natural lighting fuse with hot

trends in industrial chic that highlight the creative use of modern, yet vintage, stripped down details

    such as exposed brick and industrial and mechanical detailing. PLEASE TURN THE PAGEP HO TO S C O U R T E S Y O F

    LIGHT

    Let There Be...

  • 20 | KCH&S April 2015

The shift in architecture and style has driven a huge

popularity in casement and awning windows. People want

walls of glass. In fact, they want as much glass as possible.

Modern casement and awning windows are the most popular

choice in getting that industrial look.

Industrial casement and awning windows, like those found

in warehouses and factories, have come to be appreciated as

modern design gems. Casements, which are hinged and open

to the side, and awning windows, which are hinged from the

top, are being used to achieve everything from an edgy and

sophisticated style, to a warm, inviting, and even weathered

feel. The striking nature of the windows lends themselves too

many design styles because they eliminate the need for overt

ornamentation. Instead, the use of natural light dramatically

highlights the style, lines, and other elements of design, such

as robust pops of color, and layers of texture.

Another reason people are gravitating toward casements

and awnings is the desire to bring the outside in, and highlight

    their view, furthered Beeler.

Current trends in outdoor living spaces find the use of

casement windows and bi-fold glass doors a perfect application

for creating a seamless indoor-outdoor space.

The industrial revolution gave birth to incredible and incredibly

underappreciated design elements that have now come of

age. Leaving behind the historically solely utilitarian aspect,

modern casement windows have gained a respected place in

    residential design.

    rom embellished florals

    and romantic details to

    modern minimalism, window

    covering trends continue to reflect

    a style-meets-value market, says

    Cherie Roellchen, owner of One

    Stop Decorating.

    The 2015 window treatment

market is reflecting the attitude of

    the buyer who wants options

that add value, but style that

    demonstrates a more positive

    economy, Roellchen explains.

    KCH&S reachedout to Cherie Roellchen,

owner of One Stop Decoratingto find out what is trendingin window treatments.

    PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

  • Fortunately, there are many exciting options available

to the enthusiastic and increasingly design savvy public.

In draperies, bold prints have been very popular for

the last several years. Patterns continue to trend,

though more organic inspired prints and florals are

    dominating the market.

Also influencing current trends are todays less

    conventionally shaped windows.

Covering specialty windows is another huge aspect

driving current trends. Solar shades offer an excellent

option because of their extreme versatility. In addition

to being able to address such needs as covering a

skylight or arched windows, they also offer features

such as top down/bottom up, and different screen

materials to filter different amounts of light while still

providing privacy. The sleek, transitional look solar shades

provide is very on trend for the modern minimalist look.

They are also popular as an aesthetically pleasing

design choice which supports other interior design,

    she explained.

Also driving the market in shades is the continued

    popularity of outdoor living spaces.

Outdoor living spaces continue to grow in popularity

and in complexity as residents streamline their living

spaces. These spaces extend the living area of the home,

and also offer another dimension to the functionality

of the home, whether it is a space for relaxing or

entertaining. Shades have become the first choice for

obtaining a seamless indoor/outdoor living space

that embraces outdoor living while still providing a level

    of privacy.

Design features are as important as design styles this

year, and play an additional role in consumer choice.

Automation and motorization are more popular than

ever before. Many homes have windows that are well

out of reach and the light that comes through those

windows can cause a glare on todays large flat screen

televisions as well as on computer screens. Motorized

screens, shades, and draperies give the resident a

convenient way to control the light. There are even

options in automation which allow the user to close or

open the window covering from their phone or other

    mobile device.

The options are endless, according to Roellchen,

and that is exactly what makes the 2015 window

covering trends so exciting. More than ever, they reflect

the wants, needs, and creativity of the consumer.

  • NewAll it took was a simple piece of toast to destroy a large portion of the interior of Amanda

and Corey Marshs home, but after months of rebuilding and remodeling, it would appear

the efforts involved were a piece of cake! However, there is more to this gorgeous home

than meets the eye and the story behind this one is certainly worth telling.

Located in the Wyngate subdivision in Overland Park, Kansas, this stunning five bedroom 4.5

bath home was the perfect place for Corey and Amanda to raise their daughters Mailyn and

Irelyn and their three lovable bull dogs.

Built in 2008 by builder Thomson Sailors, the Marsh family assumed possession in late 2010,

enamored by the elegance, stylish sophistication and functionality of the home. It was a dream

    come true for Amanda.

However, on January 31, 2014, that dream took a turn and presented a nightmarish situation

for the Marsh family. A fire broke out that morning when no one was home, the cause of which

was later determined to have come from faulty wiring in the toaster. The resulting destruction

forced the Marsh family to temporarily reside in anther home for eight months, during which

time the home was restored and remodeled to seeming perfection, and while Amanda is thrilled

with the results, the entire process was truly a labor of love.

A devastating fire that all but completely destroyedtheir home compelled a family to enthusiastically embrace

a new design that welcomes them home daily.

Story by ANN E. BUTENAS | Photos by MATT KOCOUREK

    A

    Beginning

  • 30 | KCH&S April 2015

  • KCH&S April 2015 | 31

In collaboration with custom builder Brian Koehler,

who has a vast history of overseeing numerous fire

restoration projects, Amanda and Corey were able to

rebuild the interior of their home, maintaining some of the

    original personality while simultaneously incorporating

additional elements that have made this home not only

a showcase, but also a place where family and friends

    can comfortably gather.

There was no doubt in my mind that Brian would

make our house even better than it was before,

said Amanda, who, instead of deferring to anger and

frustration over the situation embraced the project and

    indulged her inner design goddess.

Throughout the process, Amanda consulted with

Carla Rieke, interior designer with Madden-McFarland

Interiors, who assisted with all aspects of the redesign,

including trim work, tile, paint, lighting and flooring.

I brought samples to her and she made the

choices, said Carla. She has a terrific eye for everything

and theres no doubt she favors the bling and sparkle

elements. Every step of the way she knew what she

liked and didnt like. We shared our ideas, worked out

the details, and I think the final results are amazing.

    They have a lovely home.

The kitchen and living room sustained heavy smoke

damage and much of the interior of the home had to

be ripped to the original studs. The walkout basement

was primarily affected by water damage. Amanda and

Corey opted to stick with the original design of the

home, but tweaked the layout to a degree. Archways

replaced former square door openings; the kitchen was

restructured to accommodate an oversized Wolf range

and a Sub-Zero refrigerator, which were appliances

Amanda has always desired. PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

We shared our ideas, workedout the details, and I think

    the final results are amazing.

  • Amanda immersed herself in the entire redesign process, learning all about paint color,

carpet textures, flooring, light fixtures and accessories. The half bath near the kitchen is home

to a funky mirror comprised of all circles and the animal print wallpaper has a personality all

    its own, much like Amanda.

I like sparkle and glitter, so we chose a color schematic throughout the house that is heavy

with silver and gold, along with some elements of crystal for effect, she noted. I like pretty

things but dont go over the top with them. I am more of a sparkly-glam kind of gal!

Central to the main level is the open multi-level two story curved staircase with iron

spindles, which makes a grand statement of style and elegance and the effect of looking

down from the top through all three levels is mesmerizing.

On the lower basement level, the one area that survived the fire, the original bar remained,

but Amanda chose to update its appeal with new lighting. The granite countertop was

unaffected and the tile and cabinetry were simply resanded and restained. The bar is situated

in a full-function kitchen area, complete with a full size refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher.

A former storage room was turned into a playroom/theater room for the two girls, and its

turquoise wall color, paired with the orange background behind the book shelves, adds a bit

of pop and flair and is the perfect place for the girls to play while their parents entertain friends

and family in the nearby bar and kitchen area. The entire lower level, previously carpeted, now

enjoys a more user-friendly hardwood floor.

  • I love the Palm Springs feel and design to the playroom,

expressed Amanda, referring also to the hot pink couch, the

orange and hot pink throw rug and the funky light fixture, all

of which seamlessly make this room a statement of style in and

    of itself.

Transitioning into the master bedroom makes for an experience

in glamour and dramatic appeal. The deep grey paint color on

the walls marries harmoniously with the gilded gold accents

the ceiling trim work. Custom made curtains and bedding add to

    the charm.

The adjoining bathroom continues with the scheme, boasting

deep gray wallpaper with a raised, sparkly design, and the

Carrera marble countertops provide a modern touch. A quick

peek into the expansive master closet reveals a wall of cubbies

specifically designed for Amandas collection of purses.

Amanda revealed she spent countless hours at Wilson Lighting

picking out fixtures, but fell in love with the process.

Lighting can really change and enhance a home, she explained.

When the Marsh family moved back in on November 26, 2014,

the final touch, however, was a new toaster for the kitchen.

I definitely needed to get one of those! laughed Amanda,

demonstrating strength of character through a very challenging

time. We finally feel back at home.

  • estled in an upscale Overland Park community known for its soothing

waterscapes, waterfalls, lakes and streams, this nearly 3,200 square foot

residence is just as much a work of art as it is a place to just kick off your

shoes, put up your feet and relax at the end of a long day.

Award-winning builder Austin Roeser, Owner and President of Roeser Homes, can

barely contain his enthusiasm for this floor plan, known as The Carter, which boasts large

open spaces and a design that pays strict attention to detail while also providing a

    welcoming ambiance.

I really appreciate the large, open spaces throughout that offer a comfortable feeling

    to the home, noted Roeser.

From the street side curb appeal to the backyard landscape, this home is the envy of

the neighborhood and will definitely prove to be a treasured gathering spot for friends and

family. As you approach the front door, the custom distressed wooden beams in the

entryway overhead instantly make you feel as if you have already stepped inside. These

beams continue their presence throughout the office, master bedroom and kitchen.

A focal point of the foyer is the oversized stainless steel and chrome chandelier that

gives a nod to a modern vibe. Eye catching wall sconces leading up the nearby staircase

casually complement that style. Also in the foyer is a large built-in bookshelf adorned

with an antique mirror behind it, adding a daring punch of sophistication.

A true masterpiece in and of itself is the large stone veneer gas

fireplace in the great room, which is offset by a brownish grey

wash. This is a warm gathering spot in the colder months and a

strong design statement in the warmer months.

The kitchen is definitely the talk of the town, from its large granite

island to its user-friendly appliances. The kitchen and dining room

is the hub of the first floor and the primary location where family and

    friends can gather.

The granite used on the island is actually one large, seamless

piece, explained Roeser. It took about nine guys to bring it in and

we specifically engineered the floor under the island to withstand

the weight of the granite, which is over 1,000 pounds.

Included in the premier stainless steel appliances by General

Electric, are the double ovens, gas cooktop, microwave and

dishwasher. Preparing an intimate dinner for two to assembling a

holiday feast for the extended family is not only a breeze, but is PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

equally fun, as this space has successfully partnered custom

    design with multipurpose capabilities.

Not to go unnoticed is the faux painted cabinetry, presented

with subtle white and quiet grey tones accented with black faux

glazed piping that has been applied in the crevices for a more

detailed and refined look. This theme is also found in the cabinetry

around the island, which, with its cozy sitting area on one side gives

it the ability to command attention as not just a part of the kitchen

but also as a piece of well-crafted furniture.

On the opposite side of the kitchen is the open dining room,

complete with a built-in hutch accented with custom glass doors,

glass shelves and a mirrored backsplash. The faux paint carefully

matches that of the cabinetry in the kitchen and the sturdy legs

built into the hutch create yet another furniture-like appeal. This

hutch is the perfect place to store glasses and wine bottles.

  • Contiguous to one side of the kitchen is the large walk-in pantry with ample

shelving and a window that allows for more light while also creating a space that

feels more like another room instead of a pantry. The nearby mudroom is designed

to accommodate the needs of an active family with efficiency and function in mind.

The nearby half bathroom boasts a black and grey granite countertop, unique

light fixtures to either side of the mirror. A window situated above the mirror beckons

the ambiance of natural light to flow through the room.

Double glass French doors swing open into the office and the transom window

above the doorway allows for copious amounts of natural light while simultaneously

providing a touch of uninterrupted elegance. Stained beams perfectly frame the

    doorway.

The master bedroom, also situated on the main level, enjoys a design and flow

that makes it feel more like a resort than simply a bedroom. The vaulted ceiling with

a light ledge adds a calming glow at night. The adjoining master bathroom offers a

spa-like setting with its soft decorative light fixtures, large whirlpool bath tub, and

huge walk-in closet. Glass metallic tile with greyish undertones runs vertically on the

    wall behind the tub.

The accent stone veneer wall leading into the master bedroom adds a touch of

style and sophistication and the hardwood flooring with its slight grey wash, also

found through the other areas of the home, adds a subtle layer of warmth and style.

Three additional bedrooms, all outfitted with their own private bathrooms and

walk-in closets, are located on the upper level, along with a loft area.

The Carter plan offers a great environment and feel in the spaces you use most,

smiled Roeser. That is what makes it a great, comfortable, beautiful home that I not

only love, but personally live in!

  • his mudroom nestled in a stylish home in

southern Leawood has been designed to keep

pace with the active family that resides here.

Catering to four kids and two adults, this room sees

an appreciable amount of foot traffic, and designer

Laura Suhr, owner of Suhr Interior Design, definitely had

her work cut out for her when creating a room that is

independent and confident in its own space yet can

seamlessly transition to the rest of the home.

Upon entering the room, what first catches ones eye

is the dark porcelain tile on the floor, which provides a

sleek, modern feel to the room while also working

overtime to disguise dirt and debris with its unique

variation in colors. This low maintenance flooring is also

    a breeze to clean!

Perfect for this busy family are the customized cubbies,

one for each child, with adjoining benches upon which to

sit while lacing up the sneakers. The warm grey color of

the built-in cabinets accented with the lighter wall color

    marries beautifully with the flooring.

We went with a medium toned gray on the mud

bench which ties in nicely with the flooring, and more

important, is very forgiving in high traffic areas noted

Suhr, who also referenced the extra storage space for

    shoes directly under the benches.

Adding to the overall modern vibe of the room are the

two doorways that allow access to the mudroom. One

door leads into the additional garage and living space

and the other faces the street. The door facing the street

boasts five square windows running vertically down the

side to complement the looks of the main front door.

For this particular door, the family wanted something

that was unique and would enhance the modern exterior

while still providing privacy and security, explained Suhr.

Finally, the long runner adds a bit of comfort to the

space while the brightly colored art gives a nod to the

eye-popping colors and appeal found in the rest of the

    homes interior design.

ithout a first floor laundry room in its original 1960s floor plans, this

charming home located in a northern Leawood neighborhood was

long overdue for a place that allowed the homeowners easy access to

laundry, coats, shoes, and storage for various items used on a daily basis without

overwhelming the garage entry way into the home.

It really doesnt feel like a laundry room, however, noted John Moffitt, President

of Moffitt Realty and local homebuilder whose company MOJO redesigned this

space with user-friendly appeal at top of mind.

Thanks to three windows, this room enjoys a wealth of natural light as well as

a front-row view of the backyard. It truly does feel like another room in the house

    instead of just a mudroom.

With its wealth of counter top space, storage areas and cabinets, it truly is a

multipurpose room. The footlockers, cubbies and hooks all take their place with

respect to efficiency and usability, and the eye-catching corkboard hanging on

the wall makes for the perfect family message center or the place to put those

coupons and shopping lists for last-minute retrieval.

The expansive counter tops are perfect

for holding multiple items at once and

greatly influence the theme of the home

while also standing up to the daily activity

    in the household.

    Additionally, the quarter-sawn oak

floors add a touch of warmth while

    simultaneously providing an easy cleaning

surface when those dirty tennis shoes

are exchanged for cozy house slippers.

Unique to this mudroom are the two

easy access doors, one from the two car

garage on one side and the other from the

recently-added one car garage on the opposite side, both of which provide

access to the backyard. This allows for a seamless transition from any number of

chores, from unloading groceries to preparing to mow the lawn.

his charming mudroom located in a

classic ranch-style home in an established

    Leawood neighborhood is the perfect

balance of form and function. Prior to embracing

its new look, the space leading into the home

from the garage was essentially a battleground of

book bags, cleats, coats and mud from the yard.

With three active kids at the helm, a change was

    definitely in order.

Thanks to Lance McCarthy, owner of ReTouch,

a Kansas City Design Build General Contractor,

and his phenomenal team, this mudroom has

gained decided momentum in terms of design and

    ease of use.

In order to make this work, we essentially stole

about 18 inches from the garage, creating a 200

square foot laundry room/mudroom, along with a

    connecting half bath, noted McCarthy.

The design incorporated a row of lockers and

benches, enough for all five members of the family.

Individual buckets in the lockers help to encourage

organization and structure. In keeping pace with

technology, each locker/cubby space is equipped

with its own USB port, making it easy to recharge

all of those cell phones, tablets and laptops.

The spacious Montclair Danby honed marble

countertop makes folding clothes a snap and the

drying rack over the countertop allows for laundry

day multitasking. Additionally, the cabinets located

on both sides of the washer and dryer were custom

    made with additional height.

The overall brightness and engaging appeal of

the room makes it an inviting and welcoming space

as well. The Banana Yellow paint by Benjamin

Moore found in the bathroom pairs well with the

Rock Port Gray wall paint, also by Benjamin Moore,

in the main area. Finally, the standard oak hardwood

flooring, stained to match the rest of the home,

adds a certain level of warmth to the space while

also holding its own against the daily foot traffic.

You definitely dont mind spending time in this

    room, noted McCarthy.

n the over 30 years Noble House Jewelry has been in business, it has played a prominent

role in Doug Brooks life. In fact, as the son of Zoe Herrington, owner and founder of

Noble House, he quite literally grew up in the industry.

There has never been a time when the store and the industry has not been a part of

my life. My mom even turned her office into a nursery! beamed Brooks.

Throughout his childhood, Brooks spent many hours in the store. There he watched

his mother live all she believed about putting people first and understanding that buying

jewelry is always a significant moment in the lives of the customer, whether they are buying

an expensive wedding ring or a beautiful costume piece.

The love for jewelry and the industry was never forced on me. I grew into it. Spending

time in the store, I came to understand all that it takes to create a stunning piece and the

impact such beauty has on the lives of the customer. It is transformative, and I love it.

Jewelry has become my passion, and I have my mom to thank for that.

This business has been my moms life. She has worked endless hours and made Noble

House one of the most respected jewelry stores in the area. Customers have always been

her top priority - everything about us reflects her vision and hard work.

My mom is not going anywhere, Doug assures. Jewelry is her passion too, and I dont

think there will ever come a time where she is not serving or ensuring a positive customer

experience. I am just taking on more duties so she can enjoy what she has worked so hard

    to achieve.

Dougs vision for the future of Noble House is one he shares with his mom.

We will continue to expand so we can always sell great pieces at fair, affordable prices.

Because we believe in fairness, we have very narrow margins of profit. To keep prices that

reflect our mission, we have to sell enough to make that possible. This store is a melting

pot where you can find everything from pieces over $200,000 to popular costume pieces

for under $20. We want everyone to have the same pleasurable experience.

Whatever the future holds, Doug feels fortunate to enjoy being part of the industry, and

    for his family.

I am blessed to have this life and this family, and to be able to do what I truly love. I am

blessed to carry on the legacy and I hope to grow it to pass on to my own family someday.

  • ometimes, you just need to take a chance and great things happen, says Stephanie

    Lampton, of Blue Springs Missouri.

After working in the food service food brokerage industry for several years as a

representative, sixteen years ago Lampton felt it was time to try making a go of it on her

own. Starting a business is always a risky choice, but starting a woman owned and local

    brokerage was especially risky.

It is a highly competitive industry. Most brokerages are national, so they have an out of

state office with local representatives. There are also very few woman owned brokerages,

    she explained.

Undaunted, she pursued her dream without looking back, and formed Menu Marketing.

I started the business from my home, and when I outgrew that, leased a small office.

That office was quickly outgrown and we are now located in Independence. This location

offers a state-of-the-art demonstration kitchen and meeting rooms,

Now, with seven employees, the company has seen growth every year and represents

more than 30 food and food service related manufacturers and provides a diverse product

    mix for her customers.

I am not looking to become a huge, national company. The company is the perfect size

to provide local customers with the personal service their businesses deserve.

Looking back, she acknowledges she had some apprehension.

Of course I was scared. I was fortunate though, that I have a very supportive husband,

Terry, whose job provides health insurance. He also provided support and encouragement.

I figured, it may work out, and if not, I can always go back to work for another brokerage,

she said explaining why she was encouraged to take the risk.

Likening it to jumping off a cliff, she added, I had an idea and I had to pursue it. If I

did not try, I would never know if it were possible. For others with an idea or dream, she

    recommends the same.

Dont wait too long. Dont let your idea stay just an idea. Make it happen. You may not

have all the skills or resources, but there are others that can play a roll. You can gain skills

  • ortgage rates are determined by the supply and demand formortgage bonds in the bond market.

Why Mortgage Bonds? When you get a mortgage in the US, your mortgage company is gettingthe money from Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac or other securitizers. Thesesecuritizers get their money by issuing bonds to bond marketinvestors. These bonds are called mortgage bonds or mortgage backedsecurities. Therefore, the mortgage rate you pay is really determinedby the supply and demand for mortgage bonds in the bond market.

The Role of the Federal ReserveAs you can see from the chart, the Fed owned zero ($0) mortgage bondsprior to 2008. Once the financial crisis happened, the Fed decided tostart buying mortgage bonds in order to drive interest rates down andstimulate the economy. This is called quantitative easing or QE,and weve had several rounds of QE so far.

Currently, the Fed owns a whopping $1.75 TRILLION in mortgage bonds!

The Fed has been the biggest buyer of mortgage bonds in recent years. This had the impact of holding interest rates down to artificially lowlevels. In fact, mortgage rates were in the 6.5% - 7% range back in 2006- 2007 before the Fed started buying mortgage bonds. Thats over 2%higher than where mortgage rates are today. Interest rates could beimpacted if the Fed issues statements about slowing down or stoppingtheir purchase of mortgage bonds.

3 Things That May Impact Recent Mortgage Rates

Jobs Report: Bond investors and the Fed watch the jobs report and unemploymentnumbers very closely to determine if the economy is improving and whether theyshould buy, sell or hold mortgage bonds. Inflation Report: Bond investors and the Fed watch the inflation reports (CPI andPCE) to determine whether they should buy, sell or hold mortgage bonds. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Report: Bond investors and the Fed follow theGDP numbers to determine if the economy is growing and whether they should buy, sell or hold mortgage bonds. (GDP measures the size of the economy and whetherits growing, shrinking or stagnating.) Conclusion: We anticipate continued volatility in mortgage rates over the nextseveral months as bond investors and the Fed decipher the economic reports thatweve outlined above. Please contact me for more info on which economic reportsmay impact mortgage rates this week.

  • Want your home to stand out among the tried and true brick, stone and stucco exteriors? Several products are

available today which not only allow a homeowner to express their creativity and personality when remodeling or

building a home, but are high functioning as well.

Brian Faust, President of Faust Construction, has worked with several innovative architectural materials to create

    modern and unique home designs.

On several projects Ive incorporated phonelic panels for faade cladding the skeleton of the house is framed

as normal, and the flat, free-standing panels are hung on the faades.

Trespa is a reinforced laminate panel, about three-quarters of an inch

thick. It is extremely durable, moisture resistant, doesnt contract in

extreme and changing weather conditions, and offers nearly limitless

design possibilities, he said. Prodema has a similar product which

    offers a natural wood veneer.

On a recent remodel, the exterior walls of the house utilized a complete

rain screen wall siding system using hidden fasteners, which created a

sleek, clean finished product. Masarandubra Brazilian redwood was

juxtaposed with a corrugated metal siding, using horizontal seams, or

reveals, as an architectural element to break up the long spans. It

also allowed the use of shorter panels, which saved the owner on

    shipping costs.

Another remodel incorporated slate blended with large glass panels.

Thin veneer panels of the grey colored natural stone were hung to give the

effect of shingles on the home, blending into its natural setting among the trees. The streamlined and sleek finishes

have a modern, contemporary flair that is unique in many traditional Kansas City neighborhoods.

He also suggests using traditional materials in unusual ways such as an exotic wood landscape wall, using decking

material on the exterior of the home, or stainless steel to shroud a column.

Often clients will come to me with pictures from the internet or a magazine of a look they like, Brian noted. Its

a great starting point to talk about all the options available. I enjoy being creative and designing a unique home that

has a current and fresh style.

    Irrigation SystemsNow Monitor Themselves

  • Signs of spring are popping up, warmer days are bringing the first

bright yellow daffodils, and tender new grass blades are becoming

a lush, healthy green lawn April is in full swing! Its always

exciting to watch our yards rejuvenate, cloaking our homes with

warmth and personality. Beautiful landscaping is the pride and joy

of every homeowner on the block.

The easiest way to maintain that curb appeal is with a

personalized irrigation system. It takes the guess work out of

watering and beautifies your home, while saving you time and

money. Wes Ory, President of Heritage Lawn & Irrigation suggests

homeowners install sprinkler systems to keep their homes looking

their best. He notes, One of the benefits is the convenience of

being able to water automatically. Everyone has good intentions in

the spring when they have just planted flowers and are enjoying

being outside, but by July and August it can be frustrating and time

consuming to pull out the hoses daily. And during vacations, plants

and lawns can be lost if not taken care of.

Watering by hand is only partially efficient at getting the water

where desired. An automatic sprinkler system can increase that

efficiency and with todays technology, a homeowner can even

conserve water with a few options.

A rain sensor can be installed on gutters relatively inexpensively

to shut off sprinklers when it is raining. Or a soil moisture sensor

can detect how much water the lawn has received recently

and determine if its necessary for the sprinkler system to activate,

    Ory said.

Not just for keeping lawns looking great, systems can also include

    the entire outdoor living area.

Its important to set up separate zones to water flower beds, a

certain portion of the lawn, or even customize to water a vegetable

garden, added Ory. A plan can be designed for pots, hanging

baskets and window boxes using a micro-irrigation system to fish

a small pipe behind or up through the bottom of a pot to be

inconspicuous. It can even be set up for a fountain or bird bath to

auto fill when the water level gets too low.

With the help of an automatic irrigation system providing

consistent watering, your lawn and garden can thrive in vibrant

    colored beauty all season.

A SPICE ROAD ADVENTUREClassical Indian food takes you on a journey through delicious flavors.

  • Steeped in history, garam masala was a spice mixture created for the effect of heating the bodyfor medical purposes. As a common ingredient in todays Indian cuisine, the combination of these fresh, natural

ingredients and the aromatic atmosphere make for a warm and inviting experience when you indulge in this

    culinary heritage.

If there is one dish in which to enjoy, Biryani is it. Originating from Northern India, it can be looked as a gift from

the gods as this dish takes simple chicken, adds in a special mix of aromatic spices and simmers for a couple of

hours creating a heavenly magic which is then served over rice.

In keeping with the trend of the local dishes, the drink to complement these dishes is a lassi, suggests Roushan

Kumar, owner of Kulture Kurry, Overland Parks latest upscale ethnic restaurant.

This yogurt drink is made by blending yogurt, water, and spices together

usually served sweet, salty, or with mango our favorite.

Laced with fragrant spices, sauces and marinades, Kansas Citians are fortunate

to have a selection of choices when it comes to dining Indian style. Entrees are

authentic recipes, many of them derived from Ranchi, which happens to be

Kumars Northern Indian hometown. Just as in many countries, the cuisine is

influenced greatly by the region, and thats why I wanted to open an Indian

restaurant that focuses solely on Northern Indian fare to pay tribute to what the

food was like where I grew up, Kumar said. I think what our guests will come to

understand is that Indian food is a fusion of so many cultural nuances, that it will

take a few visits to figure out the heritage of the flavors.

Those who are familiar with Indian food will be surprised with the subtle twists

on our menu. And, for anyone who hasnt tried Indian food before, it will be our

pleasure to help you explore the culture, flavors and spices unique to Indian food, says Kumar.

Offering some amazing foods and sweets, Northern Indian food definitely needs to be included on your bucket

list. It will satisfy your taste buds while immersing you in their culture as you cross this experience off your list.

    and view their menu.

  • Patients often wonder why their aches and sprains; for

example tennis elbow, rotator cuff injury, knee ligament tear

or ruptured back disc take so long to heal and, sometimes,

become a chronic condition. When we are injured, we typically

stress or strain our joints. These joints use tendons and

ligaments to hold them together. When we over exert or stretch

these joints, we develop an inflammation and/or tear in our

tendons and ligaments. Since ligaments only heal up to 60%

of their original strength, the joint becomes loose and unstable.

The injury then becomes a chronic condition and is prone to

re-injury. Chronic pain can then result from premature wear and

breakdown of the cartilage in the joints and muscle tendons.

  • Until now, doctors have been limited in available

treatments for injuries that are bad enough to

possibly need surgery. Other treatments just reduce

pain while the body is healing itself, but PRP may

help heal chronic injuries, slow the progression of

more serious injuries, decrease the overall time

of healing and be an alternative to surgical

intervention. says Daniel Bruning, M.D who, along

with his partner, Kimber Eubanks, M.D., perform

PRP therapy in the Kansas City area. These

doctors also have first hand experience in being

treated themselves with PRP and are each very

satisfied with their results. Dr. Bruning had his

tennis elbow and knee treated and Dr. Eubanks

had his sacroiliac joint treated with excellent pain

relief. This convinced the doctors to make this

    available to their patients.

The procedure doesnt take long and is simply a

process of drawing blood from your arm, spinning

the blood to get the platelet-rich plasma portion

and then injecting it into your injury site. The

doctors feel the blood should be spun twice to

obtain the purest amount of platelet-only plasma.

Dr. Eubanks stated, injecting too many white blood

cells causes an unnecessary increase in pain after

the injection and the second spin greatly increases

the concentration of platelets containing growth

factors. There are very few risks to the process

and all injections are done using fluoroscopy or

ultrasound guidance. Our bodies can heal themselves, such as when we get a scratch. Unlike skin,

however, our ligaments, cartilage and tendons heal slowly due to a natural poor

blood supply. Poor blood supply means fewer platelets containing growth factors

can get to the cartilage and ligaments to heal the injury. This is why sprains and

cartilage injuries heal incompletely and can become chronically painful.

In recent years, scientific research and technology has provided a new

perspective on platelets which are usually known for the clotting process. Studies

suggest that platelets contain an abundance of growth factors that can affect

inflammation, bone formation along with wound, muscle tear and soft tissue

healing. Research shows that platelets also release many bioactive proteins

responsible for attracting white blood cells, stem cells and bone-building cells that

not only promote removal of degenerated and dead tissue, but also enhance

tissue regeneration and healing. It is thought that if an increased concentration of

growth factors and proteins can be delivered to the injured tissues, then the bodys

efforts to heal itself will intensify and speed up. The process of placing your own

concentrated platelet-rich-plasma directly to your injury site is called Platelet Rich

    Plasma therapy, or PRP.

Premature wear and breakdown of the cartilage in the joints and

muscle tendons can result in chronic pain. Most pain management

doctors rely on steroid injections to decrease the patients pain

while it is healing. Steroids may keep the patient more mobile or

permit them to do physical therapy but do not actually heal the

injury nor leave the injured area any stronger. Dr. Bruning stated, In

studies on tennis elbow chronic pain conditions, when PRP was

compared with steroid injections the steroid treated patient felt pain

relief quicker but the effect was short lived, needed to be repeated,

and did nothing to make the tendons stronger. The PRP treated

patients, on the other hand, saw slower pain relief but their pain

relief was longer lasting and the tendons showed continual signs

of strengthening for the long term. When asked why someone

would be willing to wait longer for pain relief with PRP over a steroid

injection, Dr. Eubanks responded, the steroid injection will definitely

need to be repeated for chronic pain conditions usually within

weeks to months. PRP therapy may give up to a year or possibly

much longer lasting results. The PRP treatment may also make the

area stronger and less prone to re-injury.

The concept of using our own inflammatory response to heal

has been written since the ancient Greek Olympics. Platelet Rich

Plasma therapy was initially developed in the 1970s and first used

in 1987 in an open heart surgery. One of the worse parts of healing

after open heart surgery is from the breast bone being split in two.

To stimulate quicker and more stable healing of the sternum, PRP

was injected directly around the area to aid healing. Doctors have

used PRP since the mid-1990s to aid bone healing after spinal

injury and soft tissue recovery following plastic surgery. In 2004,

studies at Stanford University found that PRP therapy got 90%

healing at 6 months in injuries as long out as 20 months. PRP and

stem cell treatments have been used extensively outside the United

States for over 20 years with reported good health results. For

years, elite athletes have had to travel to Europe to get these

treatments before they were available in the U.S. PRP has gained

publicity when used by high profile athletes such as golfs Tiger

Woods, footballs Troy Polamalu, baseballs Takashi Saito and

    basketballs Brandon Roy.

PRP is being performed by Pain Management doctors,

Orthopedic doctors, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation doctors,

Plastic Surgeons, Oral Surgeons, Radiologists and Veterinarians.

A search on youtube.com will show many different medical

specialties using PRP and stem cells with good reported outcomes.

The doctors at PainCARE consider PRP for their patients who have

failed other types of conservative therapy, such as physical therapy,

    KCH&S April 2015 | 73

  • !!!!!

chiropractic care, acupuncture and steroid injections. PRP should

be considered before surgery. Dr. Eubanks stated, It is not often

we have a natural tool to help patients that can be performed in

an office setting, have the capability of treating multiple areas of

the body with minimal risks, have no down time, and very few

contraindications! Any time we can treat a condition without

surgery we lessen the risks to our patients. We would like everyone

to know this treatment is possible. Although it may not work for

everyone it is a strong treatment to consider.

PRP is not the same as stem cell therapy although they share

a similar action to heal the ligaments, bone and cartilage. PRP

releases proteins and growth factors to attract local stem cells and

spur them to action. Stem cell therapy is the injection of stem cells

    directly to your injury site.

Stem cells are immature cells that are influenced by their

surroundings. When brought to an injury site, a stem cell may

develop into the kind of cell needed to help in healing muscle,

ligament and cartilage. They may also provide an anti-inflammatory

effect, recruit other adult stem cells for healing, and support tissue

    remodeling instead of scar formation.

The doctors at PainCARE use stem cells obtained from left over

amniotic tissue, after a baby has been delivered. Since a lot of

chronic pain patients are over 40, their stem cells may not be as

biologically active or as plentiful as those of a newborn. There have

been no cases of anyone having any problems from amniotic cells,

    said Dr. Bruning.

There are no clinical trials showing better results with stem cell

therapy vs. PRP therapy but stem cells may offer an advantage

when tissue regeneration is desired. The doctors at PainCARE

believe that PRP is a reasonable first therapy for treatment. If there

is no response to PRP, you can discuss with the doctor whether

stem cell therapy is the next appropriate step.

Insurance companies will not cover PRP or stem cell therapy

because they often require years of studies before they will pay for

a therapy. Since no expensive drugs are involved, no drug company

is willing to spend the millions of dollars needed to fund these

studies. Most of the research studies are from Veterinary medicine

and have been very positive for PRP in terms of tendon-healing

effects in animals. More clinical trials on humans are currently being

conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of PRP treatment. At this

time, the results of these studies are inconclusive because the

effectiveness of PRP therapy can vary. Factors that can influence

the effectiveness include: the area of the body being treated, the

over-all health of the patient and if the injury is recent or chronic, the

timing of initiation of the therapy, and the quality and quantity of

  • he rich aroma fills a room and you can hardly wait to sip that first cup of the drink

of the gods. Something this good must be bad, you think, but it is your one guilty

pleasure, and you are going to enjoy every last drop.

If the latest research proves true, you may not have to feel guilty about your

    indulgence at all.

Research shows that moderate coffee consumption may reduce liver and

kidney cancer risk, a reduction in the rate of Alzheimers, Parkinsons and

can reduce the likelihood of full-blow dementia. It is high in antioxidants

and can prevent oxidative damage to DNA. Coffee has also been

found beneficial in reducing the risk of cardiovascular

disease and Pancreatitis as well as in reducing

the risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

  • aspects of coffee, I love the aroma, I love coffee people; they are

inevitably more adventuresome, more traveled, more well-read

than non-coffee drinkers; certainly more interesting! There simply

isnt anything about it that I dont love...and actually love more

every day. I feel totally blessed that this is the case; to be obsessed

with something so magical and delicious and community building

is just simply a blessing, ONeill shared of his lifelong-passion.

For ONeill, and many coffee lovers, coffee is more than a

beverage. It is an adventure with a history behind every cup.

If there was anyone out there who didnt drink coffee (yet), or felt

like they maybe didnt get what all the fuss is about, Id just

ask them to try coffee a few times. Read up on it...the health

benefits as well as its fascinating history. But even if one doesnt

drink coffee and doesnt want to, I think the coffee culture is

cool and awesome. The shops are usually full of super nice

people, community oriented folks, well-read folks, involved folks...

enlightened in a really healthy way. But even with the way I feel,

if someone didnt want to drink coffee, Im cool with that. We

are not on a mission to covert the world; we really arent. But if

someone is curious, wants to learn, wants to try new things, then

we love sharing what we know and the more folks who join us on

    our adventure, the better!
