IT’S ALREADY BEEN SEVERAL MONTHS SINCE I RETURNED FROM THE KITCHEN

& Bath Industry Show (K/BIS) in Atlanta, but it’s just about perfect timing for those new

product introductions to start hitting showroom floors this fall. A stack of press releases

announcing hundreds of new product ideas has been sitting in my office, the shiny folders and

glamorous photos waiting for me to see them and show them to the world (or at least the Greater

Kansas City area). Finally, that day has come.

This issue is mostly the culmination of the newest products coming into the market. Some of

them are available locally, others not. My objective is to share the trends that are leading the

industry and open your mind to the possibility of what is to come.

Though the number of attendees at the show was down this year, innovation was not. Year

after year, bear market or bull market, designers and engineers continue to create or rethink

appliances and accessories that can make our lives easier or more beautiful. I have a handful

of favorites, from the line of sculptural tile from Ann Sacks on page 65 to the chandelier

ventilation hood on page 41. Both fall under the ‘beautiful’ category.

But functionality is a huge issue and should come first when designing any space. Shawn

McCune points this out articulately during an interview about one of his most recently

completed kitchen projects, featured on page 34. The finished product looks great now, but only

after its floor plan was worked over at the drafting table. Good traffic flow was vital to a

successful remodel.

That’s especially true in even smaller places like the bathroom. While we focus our feature

story on master baths, none of the three is overwhelmingly large. The designers of each share

how they made the most of their clients’ square footage, starting on page 58.

As we head into 2010, we’ll continue our search for the finest local home design projects, but

we also want to keep you apprised of what’s happening at the national and international level.

To do so, our team of editors has begun assembling videos of the newest movements seen at

trade shows and other events. These short clips will be housed on our website, where you

can watch them anytime. Check out our first two on kitchens and baths at www.kchandg.com.

It’s just another way we work to keep you informed and inspired.

hen you realize it takes a semaphore

and flashing lights to get from the

back door of your home into the kitchen,

it’s probably time for a remodel. That’s

what Shawn McCune, CKD, and owner of

Kitchen Design Gallery, discovered with a

recent project.

“I met with the homeowners, who wanted a

kitchen redesign, but I immediately saw that

the underlying problem was the traffic pattern

in the kitchen,” Shawn says. “There was no

entryway, so this busy intersection was very

small with several doors opening into it, none

of which could be open at the same time.”

34 • KCHANDG.COM

Certified kitchen designer Shawn McCune addresses traffic patterns andergonomics in this kitchen remodel before ever making decisions about its style.

A second entry to the kitchen was walled offwhere the fridge and microwave are now.It was unnecessary and actually inhibited traffic flow.

Only after fixing the problem areas did Shawn add aesthetic featuressuch as the wood beams and other rustic tones.

Page 37: Kansas City Home & Garden

“Everything is now so easy to get to that I find I want to cook more

often. He moved the appliances around so they were more usable, and

there’s much more space for my utensils.”

A kitchen window

was walled off, becoming

the main focal point of

the kitchen with an eye-

catching hood and range.

The large living room with

a piano and fireplace just

off the kitchen has been

redesigned as the formal

dining room, so it is a

natural extension of the

kitchen, giving flow to the

first floor. The piano was

retired to another room.

The walnut island

became more functional

when Shawn integrated a

drop-down table onto

the end that seats two

or three people, with

simple barstool seating.

A countertop and glass

cabinets that weren’t used

very often were gutted

and replaced by all new

cabinetry and appliances

made to look like furniture.

“It’s a very warm

look,” the homeowner adds.

“It’s just so pretty and homey now.”

The walls and ceiling were faux finished with plaster, giving the

walls texture. While the end result is cozy and comfortable, there’s

also an understated elegance.

“I really enjoyed working with these clients,” Shawn says. “It’s

always nice when the client has enough confidence in you to allow

creativity. That propels me to put more into it from an artistic

standpoint and ultimately, it helps me serve the client better.”

Since quality kitchen space demands an uninterrupted area in

which to prepare food, this problem had to be resolved before any

other issue was tackled.

“I address traffic patterns

first because nothing else

will work if you can’t have

easy access to the area

you’re working on. I created

a new traffic pattern from

the garage all the way

through the kitchen and to

the rest of the house,”

Shawn explains.

He did that by walling off

the original back door from

the garage and creating a

much larger space that

serves as a drop zone for

purses, backpacks and coats

and can also be used as an

area to charge cell phones

and other electronics.

“When you remodel,

you’re really helping people

organize their lives, so you

have to put yourself in their

position and find the path of

least resistance. People want

a place to set things down,

and that naturally happens

when they walk into the

house. When you design

around people’s natural habits, suddenly the clutter is gone,” he adds.

Another door was sealed off, and the door leading to the dining

room was widened, making it the main entrance to the kitchen. “There

were four doorways in a space that was no bigger than 5 feet by 3

feet,” Shawn says. “The whole key to this redesign was making sure

the kitchen was easily accessible, and we achieved that.”

And the homeowner couldn’t be happier with the results.

“I didn’t really know what I needed, and Shawn understood how the

kitchen should be laid out so it was more user-friendly,” she says.

OCTOBER 2009 •• 35

The redesign is not just functional in flow;its pantry space and dining options are more convenient.

elimination of the island, the peninsula would create better flow from

the kitchen to the formal dining area.

The challenge of the major remodeling phase became retaining

storage and building a new cook top with the loss of the island. The

solution came in several forms. Nancy chose cabinets that extend to

the ceiling in a bisque glaze for their timeless look and optimal

storage. On both sides of the sink, wall cabinet doors feature seeded

glass to display treasured ceramic collectibles and add personal appeal.

Nancy moved the refrigerator to the opposite wall, creating room to

make the entire length of one wall cabinet storage and countertop

space. Its paneled front matches the decor of the room and is flanked

by ceiling-high pantries. One cabinet serves as an actual pantry, while

the other conceals a microwave, mixer and toaster, all wired for use

behind a pantry door to keep the counters free of appliances. The new

cook top was then placed where the refrigerator originally stood.

Additional details include a stainless steel wall hood and custom

stainless backsplash with a

spice shelf over the cook

top. Also along the wall

are the dishwasher, trash

compactor and undermount

sink all topped by a new

black soapstone countertop.

A cream-colored tile

backsplash nestles between

the counter space and

cabinets above, arranged in

a subway pattern with

charcoal grout to contrast

the black countertop with

the bisque cabinetry. Also

in contrast, the oak floors

added in the first phase

were refinished to a dark

walnut color, adding depth

and warmth to the overall

look.

From the first phase to the final product, Nancy wisely

used her resources — and her patience — to ultimately

create this functional, beautiful kitchen.

or Nancy Gleason, a professional interior designer who

spends most of her time on other people’s homes, a major

overhaul of every room in her own home at one time would

be a daunting, hurried project of labor — not love. That’s why she took

to her own kitchen remodel in phases.

She’s not unlike the 36 percent of homeowners who choose to break

up their remodeling projects into manageable phases, keeping stress,

cost and chaos at a minimum, and allowing for plans and budgets to

evolve over a period of months, even years. Planning for multiple

projects at one time can present a costly problem for a homeowner

who wants to make each room a thoughtful process, and “it’s just

not realistic for most people,” Nancy remarks. In fact, after living with

her original kitchen for five years and phasing different projects in

other rooms, Nancy says that her first kitchen “band aid” lasted

another four years before her plans for the final remodel became a

reality. The result of the evolution is a beautiful, well-planned final

product with superior design and a smart use of space.

The first phase had Nancy pondering the functionality of an oversized

3-foot by 7-foot island within a narrow 12-foot-wide space. A simple

facelift would have to do for a short while to make way for other

projects taking precedence within her home. She trimmed the island

by 14 inches and replaced the wood counter with granite tiles. She also

replaced laminate tiles with new oak floors.

After realizing that the island was still cluttering space rather

than creating extra storage, Nancy nixed it altogether in the final-

phase plans, and in its place, she extended the counter into a large

peninsula to create a casual spot for family to dine. Together with the

Brizo’s Pascal faucet, developed

to help chefs be more sanitary

when working with raw meat,

intuitively reacts to touch

anywhere on its spout to activate

the flow of water.

It also utilizes motion-sensing

technology and deactivates the

flow of water two seconds after

hands are removed from under

the spout, conserving both water

and energy. And it’s smart, too.

Dishes lying in the sink don’t

activate the faucet, but hands holding a dish to be rinsed below the spout do.

The Pascal faucet, with a sleek, smooth design, is likely to be the most help

you’ve had in the kitchen in a while. Available through Ferguson Enterprises,

Warren Supply Co. and Garrison Plumbing. www.brizo.com

With the kitchen still solidly holding rank as the hub of the home, industry manufacturers have made it their job to innovatenew products that will keep it the most stylish and functional room.

“This project was less about storage and more about how pretty we

could make it,” Kathy says.

She chose a classy bow-front cabinet with spindle legs and an inset

cabinet door for a “vintage look with some romance” and topped it

with Calcutta marble. The shower next to it also is outfitted with the

same timeless cream and caramel veined marble.

The homeowner decided she wanted a bit of ruggedness to balance

the elegance, settling with the textured surface of grasscloth. The

smoky amber gems of the chandelier picks up the color of the paper

and marble, tying the colors together with the seemingly distinct styles.

The result is a space that reflects the casual grace exhibited by

its owner.

fter a busy day, many people want nothing more than to

find a place of their own to be alone. That safe haven is

often a bathroom, where you can fill your tub and take a

long relaxing soak or step into a steaming shower and allow the stress

to evaporate. But today’s bathrooms don’t just make you feel good and

glamorous…they are the epitome of glamour.

Master baths, especially, are outfitted with numerous luxuries:

TVs, built-in coffee makers, refrigerators, chandeliers, heated floors,

automated light settings and more. Moreover, you generally don’t even

What’s immediately striking about this

master bath is that it looks like a larger

version of a powder room. Designed

specifically for the lady of the house,

it implies femininity with the crystal

chandelier and sconces, but also

neutrality with its grasscloth wallpaper.

Whatever style name you want to give

it, the space is a distinct upgrade from

its previous situation.

Designer Kathy Euston of Euston

Kitchen Company turned the outdated

space around, bringing functionality and

style to the master bath of the otherwise

stately Loose Park home.

The bathroom had been awkwardly divided and was stuck in a

former era, tiled in pink. Kathy called it a “big fat challenge” and

started right in with a redesign. First on the list: storage. She removed

a closet from the hallway and positioned it inside the solid French door

entry. It faces an original closet location, but Kathy removed built-in

shelves that would have been great had they not been so shallow.

Fortunately, the homeowners aren’t into hanging onto a lot of ‘stuff,’

so these two 6-foot storage units are more than enough.

Along the same line, the homeowner, who is actually a busy career

mom of four kids and doesn’t spend a lot of time “coiffing,” didn’t

need excessive cabinetry around her vanity for perfumes and makeup.

If the kitchen is the hub of the home, the master bath is the retreat.Three designers share their clients’ private refuges.

have to share space with your spouse, staking out your own counter

and cabinets with his-and-her vanities. Imagine: your own tube of

toothpaste and no globs leftover in the sink. Glamorous indeed!

To celebrate the beauty and diversity (and progression of what

was once just a lowly water closet), we offer three unique master bath

projects sure to inspire your own path to enlightenment.

AA

Page 62: Kansas City Home & Garden

Side-by-side vanities are divided by a tower of creamy-colored

glazed and distressed cabinetry. Oil-rubbed bronze faucets and knobs

contrast nicely. Madura Gold granite countertops have salmon-colored

grains running through, a color Bev picked up on for the stone tile

backsplash and wallpaper. “Wallpaper is back in such a high-end way,”

she notes. “I love the fact that it’s really sophisticated.”

But what she really loves

is the Jason deluxe whirlpool

tub she opted for over a

larger tub. The whirlpool and

bubble features are really

therapeutic and quieter than

most standard tubs. “I love a

good tub. I won’t use one if it’s way too big or lousy. I’m in this one

once a day,” she notes.

60 • KCHANDG.COM

When Bruce and Bev Gilbert, owners of Regarding

Kitchens, built their new house nearly three years ago,

they had plans to tweak the master bath. There was a

huge shower — enough for six people, Bev claims —

and an oversized tub, neither of which the couple

wanted or needed. So they changed the angle of the

tub, reduced the size of the shower (now it only fits

four!) and took two feet for a see-through fireplace to

the master bedroom.

One of their main goals with the new home was to

not heat the entire 5,000 square feet when they only

use the bathroom before leaving for the day, so they

installed radiant heated tiles that can be toasty warm in

eight minutes, without using forced heat for the rest of

the home. “It’s the best thing since turkey,” Bev says.

Another of their goals was to attain a rustic yet

sophisticated look with their material choices. Bev

wanted an Old World European look that would match

the stone and timbers featured throughout the house

but still look appropriate for a bathroom. “I dislike dark

and dreary,” she says. “I wanted to wake up to warmer

colors, like burnt orange. Frankly, we all look better in

those tones.”

TWEAKED TOPerfection

Page 63: Kansas City Home & Garden

OCTOBER 2009 •• 61

Dan Anderson of D. Anderson Consulting didn’t

overlook a single detail in his clients’ Prairie

Village home, especially in the master bathroom.

“The homeowners don’t think about the overall

picture,” he says. “But we put a lot of thought into

the specific way they would use it.” That included

everything from shelves and plugs next to the toilet

for a coffee warmer to cabinet drawers designed

just for makeup. It also included deliberate

pre-thought about the materials they would use,

namely uncut sheets of Brazilian quartzite that

were hung directly on the studs.

Dan’s team of subcontractors used pulleys to

place the Azul Imperial slabs before any other walls were up, installing

only about three of them per week. Every other wall surface is

mirrored, even the back side of the mirror so the homeowners can see

the back of their heads.

Dan’s clients weren’t afraid to redesign the space a few times to get

it right. “The original design had a shower and tub, but they were more

concerned that they have two toilets and no tub,” Dan explains. Indeed,

the final design resulted in two toilets flanking a walk-in shower with

frosted glass ceiling that gives the illusion of daylight.

PRETTY INPurple

The shower not only has a regular shower head but also a waterfall

head, two hand sprays and 12 body sprays. A specially designed

system pumps up to 26 gallons per minute and is divided into

three temperature zones, all

regulated and automatically

adjusted for pressure.

The floor is heated, of

course, and slate mosaic tile

was chosen because it’s

slip-resistant. The client

selected shiny contemporary

fixtures to complement the

cool color palette in the

stone and even had two

hammered copper sinks

silver-plated because they couldn’t find that look anywhere.

The closet, though narrow, is any woman’s dream, fitted with

cubbies for 300 pairs of shoes, plenty of hanging space, a washer/

dryer and a custom jewelry safe. A sliding ladder reaches up to three

levels of storage.

Dan marvels at how many luxuries the home and bathroom have

for being such a relatively compact space. “We gave the homeowners

what they needed to work for them,” he says.

The bathroom may seem an unlikely place for an art installation, but with Ann Sacks’ sculptural tile from

Blake Studios, any typical backsplash or shower inlay could become a work of art. The organic designs,

Nautilus, Botanical and Dahlia, can be arranged horizontally or vertically to create dynamic, eye-catching

murals. The tiles were created using an old Italian technique called sgraffito, meaning ‘scratched’ — no molds

or dies were used in the creation, but a layering of clay is used to create the textural effect. www.annsacks.com

When it comes to home design, personalization is paramount, and you won’t

find this countertop in every home on the block. With Motivo, CaesarStone

takes its quartz surface to a new level of sophistication with an embossed,

textured look and feel. Motivo is introduced in this snow white

floral brocade version or black crocodile, but these pattern-

designed finishes open the door to numerous creative looks that

make a one-of a-kind statement. www.caesarstoneus.com

In a bustling home, it seems like there’s never enough space in the bathroom. Robern’s

Uplift cabinet provides an innovative solution. The door of the cabinet opens vertically

and only requires two fingers to lift. The door has a hold feature that allows it to remain

partially open for easy use of a hair dryer or razor that can be plugged into one of the six

outlets inside. Lights inside the cabinet turn on the moment it’s opened. Available

through Ferguson Enterprises, SKG & Associates, and Dorfman Plumbing Supply.

The Supernova three-hole basin mixer by Dornbracht is an interesting example of

the use of angles. The lines of the faucet are spare but strong, creating a striking

yet still utilitarian functionality, solving a bathroom’s equally important needs of

style and functionality. www.dornbracht.com/en

The Sonia Versatile bathroom collection offers modern storage and style in a

HERE’S WHAT THEY SAID.

OCTOBER 2009 •• 67

If you’re remodeling an existing bathroom or designing a new one,

Kitchen Design Gallery’s owner, Shawn McCune, CKD, may get you

rethinking, or adding to, your plans with some ingenious patent-pending

ideas he developed a couple years ago and has been installing in every

master bath since. “They are necessary entities,” Shawn says. “Most of

my ideas come from needs. I identify an issue and use the combination

of logic and creativity to produce innovative solutions.”

Wall CaddyThis stainless steel, five-shelf wall caddy

fits between the studs in any shower. Its 30-

degree sloped bottom and drainable

shelving allows for easy cleaning and no

residue build up. The unit also can be

customized and installed into an existing

shower without changing the existing tile.

Dual-Kherr by Clima Star is a heater unit that fits to the wall. But that’s

not all. Available at Grandview Winnelson, this artsy unit can be used not

only as a towel warmer but a humidifier when you add a small piece.

With a remote control in your hand, you can program it to go on and off

The Eco Drake Toilet, found at Dorfman Plumbing Supply, may look like a regular toilet, but

it’s what’s inside that really counts. “It’s a dramatically effective toilet for just 1.28 gallons

of water,” says store owner Charlie Dorfman. Made by TOTO, this commode is upgraded with

a SoftClose seat or Washlet and comes with a flush valve that is 125 percent larger than

conventional ones. You’ll save 20 percent more water than with a 1.6-gallon toilet and 63

percent more water than a 3.5-gallon toilet. 816.842.4656 or www.dorfmanplumbing.com

Lauri and Brian Meyers love to share the history of

their Prairie Village home. In fact, they still hold the

original deed to the property and trace its roots back

to an 1859 treaty President James Buchanan signed with the

United Tribe of Shawnee Indians.

In 1903, Homer L. Breyfogle, the first constable of Mission

Township, acquired part of the land and built what is now the

Meyers’ home. The home became known as “the gathering

place,” a center for politics in town.

The Meyers relish carrying on their home’s welcoming

legacy, frequently inviting friends and family over to entertain.

But as open as their home has always been, the couple had

one complaint — their privacy was compromised by the side

deck they described as a “fishbowl” to busy West 83rd Street.

They knew there had to be a way to maintain the original feel

of the property while making better use of the space.

Three years ago, they devised the concept, envisioning an

area where they could spend time outdoors without feeling as

though every passer-by was part of the party. In order to

create such a space, they needed to demolish the existing

driveway that led up to the patio and quarter-off the area with

a fence for seclusion.

They called in Terry deFraties of Essential Extras, a

Kansas City-based outdoor structures company, to help create

the enclosure they sought. Afraid too much fencing would

appear more like a stockade and less like a secret garden,

Lauri worked with Terry to add detail to the fence to make it

more residential. The resulting white-picket fence extends to

the side of the home on an angle and includes lattice work and

an archway over the gate for small touches of grace.

From the outside, glimpses of bright flowers peek through

the fence; trumpet vine growing on the lattice attracts

hummingbirds. Also visible, reaching into the sky above

the fence, is the anchor of the inner patio: a white-painted,

hand-built pergola.

One of the couple’s main ideas from the start, the finished

four-column structure features detailed woodwork on the

roof, the result of mistakenly creating too many squares. The

Perhaps the Meyers’ most unique yardaccessories are their two Great Danes,

Cooper and Daisy Mae, whose blackand white patches and gigantic size

add regality to the patio palace.

A pergola extending from the house dapples light over a cozy seating area.

Page 85: Kansas City Home & Garden

“People who have driven by stopped in

and said, ‘I’ve always wanted to come in

here,’ and ‘I just had to see what was behind

that fence!’” Lauri recalls.

In keeping with the historical significance

of the home as a neighborhood gathering

place, Lauri and Brian have welcomed

visitors on a tour and have even broken out

the barbecue to feed their hungry guests.

Whether they are entertaining an intimate

gathering of friends, hosting the entire

neighborhood or preparing the patio as a

giant playpen for their first grandchild, the

Meyers have made their own contribution

home’s history.

intricate design turned out to be a fortune-in-

disguise, showcasing a wonderful pattern of

stars and lattice. Lauri says the overhead

protection makes the patio feel cozy and

more like a room.

A flagstone floor laid by Outdoor

Transformations pulls together the area

where the driveway used to be. The masonry

work builds up on the sides of the courtyard

into planters.

The new design negated the need for a

garage, so Lauri and Brian converted it into

an art studio for Lauri’s hobby-turned-

business, Friends of a Feather (see sidebar).

During one of their summer sales, passers-

by stopped for a glimpse of Lauri’s wares

and her home.

OCTOBER 2009 •• 83

Lauri inherited a creative spirit from

her mother, who designed home

decor items on which Lauri published

“how-to” books. The twosome were not

only in business together but shared a

passion for hunting down unique pieces

from antique shops and sales, often

bringing home more than they needed.

In 2001, they began selling their

handmade treasures and antiques at back-

porch sales at Lauri’s mother’s home. Out

and about at art stores and quaint shops,

they soon met women with similar

creative passions and “like-minded souls.”

They formed Friends of a Feather and

now host semi-annual artisan sales

featuring embellished clothing, vintage-

fabric accessories, collage and mixed

media art, paper arts, original jewelry,

beaded serving ware, repurposed antiques

and other treasures. During the sale they

serve lunch and home-baked goods and

give tours of the studio, which can be

used year-round for baby showers, girls’

days out and other special events.

esigning a landscape to accommodate a 40-foot drop from street level to body of water

isn’t an easy task, but when Clark and Mary Henry asked Landscape Architect Joann

Schwarberg, ASLA, to take it on, she was up for the challenge. Her philosophy is to take

a project to the extreme and to do it extremely well.

Landscape Architect Joann Schwarberg turned her clients’ frontand back yards into a journey, not a destination, utilizing multiple levels and private nooks along the way.

86 • KCHANDG.COM

The homeowners built a new Mission-style home designed by

architect Mary Deacy of Summit Architecture on two combined lots at

Lake Lotawana, sited specifically to enhance the views of the water and

preserve the mature oak trees. Both Mary and Joann took a cue from

the wood and stone on the property and used these materials to tie the

structural and organic elements together.

First, all utilities were buried and power poles removed to enhance

the curb appeal. Five parking spots — a rare lake commodity — were

poured just off the road. The homeowners didn’t want guests to enter on

a second level, so the home was sited downhill with stone paths and

retaining walls gently winding toward the front door, abundantly flowing

with native plantings. The Henrys’ access is via a steeply sloped driveway

that is heated for quick snow removal and has custom drains in front

of the garage.

To make the descent manageable from the house down to the dock,

Joann employed many tiers that connect different outdoor spaces on

three levels. Of course, the entire property is wheelchair-accessible via

ramped walkways and a tram with stops at the upper deck, mid-level arbor

and lake.

The upper terrace contains a generous stone patio, fireplace and

enormous slab hearth and mantel with built-in barbecue grill and

sink. Seating is conveniently designed into the retaining walls,

hearth and upholstered daybed under an arbor.

“It’s gracious and comfortable but not too overly fancy for life

on the lake,” Joann says.

She used a rule of three when designing stairs to make it easy to

carry food and other items. Three steps down, the stone patio

becomes an irregular flagstone path, gently transitioning into a

grassy area. Three steps up gets one to a curved cedar deck that

appears to float above the lake as it rests on old stone walls and

rock outcroppings at its base. Custom laminated glass and iron

railings ensure the lake vista is unobstructed.

At mid-level, Joann turned a former summer house into a simple

see-through entertaining area with table seating, refrigerator,

icemaker and sink. Large-scale cedar timbers reflect the bold

detail on the house, while a clear sheet of Plexiglass-like material

called Lexan Margard weatherproofs the space and protects it from

UV rays.

“it’s gracious andcomfortable but nottoo overly fancy for

life on the lake.”

Page 89: Kansas City Home & Garden

OCTOBER 2009 •• 87

The lake level features a storage area that was the basement of the

summer house, and two docks house the family’s fleet of watercraft.

From this vantage, especially at dusk, the carefully placed lighting

softly illuminates paths and highlights trees.

In fact, Joann was mindful throughout the design and installation

process of these elements, careful not to disturb tree roots or

moss-covered boulders. She hired an arborist to check the health

of all the trees and planted more that will grow in and someday

replace the ones already there. She also designed the irrigation

system completely separate of city water, using nonpotable

filtered lake water. Percolation wells throughout the site handle

stormwater runoff to minimize erosion.

Although she approached the project from a broader viewpoint than

just her clients’ wish list, including the environment and city systems,

Joann really looked at how the Henrys needed to use their space.

“When you’re designing residential, it’s someone’s life and love.

A couple shifts into lower gear, choosing a midtown condo with a contemporary twist over a suburban lifestyle.

Story by Kimberly Stern | Photos by Alistair Tutton

The curved wall’s veneer, called Indian Ebony, houses electronic equipment and an electric fireplace. A caramel-colored sofa from Z Gallerie, Noguchi tableand a classic Knoll womb chair from Kansas City’sHudson Home add to the sophisticated informality that is the McCormicks’ trademark.

Page 105: Kansas City Home & Garden

illie and Scott McCormick’s Sulgrave Regency condo is a stunning

convergence of luxury, art and serene urban living. Inspired by sleek

lines and contemporary design, the McCormicks’ stylish interior is

committed to a patina of saturated modern earth tones punctuated

by splashes of color in paintings, sculptures and ceramics.

Former suburban homeowners, the McCormicks purchased two ground-floor

end units at the iconic mid-rise in 2007 and embarked on a 24-month renovation

with architect Christopher Armer, AIA, of Compass Architecture, and designer

Stacy Heuer, IIDA, to carve out an imaginative and inspiring space.

The goal was to open up the combined units for a feeling of spaciousness and

capitalize on a 2,400-square-foot walkout courtyard off the kitchen and dining

areas and an intimate balcony facing the dramatic Country Club Plaza landscape

off the master suite.

“We wanted as few walls and right angles as possible,” Scott says. “Chris did

an excellent job of pushing the straight lines of the space to the perimeter and

keeping the inside curved.”

The McCormicks wanted their new urban digs to reflect the freedom of a

downsized lifestyle, accommodate their penchant for entertaining and showcase

an eclectic art collection.

“Billie and Scott were very open-minded when it came to the interior,”

Stacy says.

A major obstacle Christopher faced in reconfiguring the condo was a

plumbing stack that dissected the two units. A brilliant solution that ultimately

satisfied the couple’s request for curved lines throughout the home was an

oval-shaped enclosure that concealed the electrical components and yielded

bonus space for a diminutive powder room and small storage closet.

The ingenious design was dubbed the “egg” and covered in a misty blue quartz

stone with rust veining. A focal point from any vantage, the egg seamlessly

delineates the living space and announces the creative spirit permeating the

residence. “You get a different perspective of the wall from varying angles,” Billie

says. “This adds a lot of interest to the space.”

Bob Gillpatrick of Gillpatrick Woodworks, a full-service artisan woodworker

in Louisburg, Kan., was hired to design and execute the complicated cabinetry

and to do the template for the egg. “We had many challenges because Billie and

Scott had a specific vision and wanted curves,” Bob says. “We encountered some

engineering issues in order to maintain clean lines and the minimalist look.”

The powder room door in the egg presented a particular problem. “There were

both an ellipse and a curve,” Bob continues. “The radius of the door changes as

it opens.”

The wall across from the egg’s door

is highlighted with individual, illuminated

niches for displaying precious objets d’art,

including pieces from Kansas City artists,

KCAI students, jaunts to Paris and a family

heirloom. It leads into the light-drenched

living area, where an S-shaped entertainment

center is sheathed in an elegant veneer.

Off the living room is a clean-lined game

table and a C-shaped bookshelf that peeks

through to Scott’s office holding more art,

such as sculptures of motorcycles that are a

nod to the couple’s shared passion. Scott, a

founder of advertising powerhouse VML,

enjoys the solitude of his home office

outfitted with more custom-built walnut

shelves and a contemporary desk.

A space next to the office performs double

duty as a sitting area/library and guest room

with a custom pull-down bed. A translucent

acrylic panel sliding door creates privacy

while still allowing light to filter in. “When

the door is open, you can look through the

unit to the north-facing bank of windows,”

Chris notes. “Billie and Scott wanted visual

accessibility to their exterior surroundings.”

The McCormicks’ condo is wired for technology, from multimedia opportunities to automated lighting and even running a waterfall backsplash behind the sink.

With the condo being so open, this wood and glass partition offers some privacy for Scott’s office space.

The egg is as much a work of art as the art in the lighted niches.

The balcony is a welcome refuge for the couple and a reflection

of their new urban-influenced life. “We like to sit here with a glass

of wine and watch the activity,” Scott says.

As a gourmet cook, Billie enjoys the kitchen’s form-meets-function

design. Five black stools line a bar-height countertop that is 3 Form

acrylic in a cool avocado color. A waterfall backsplash with stones that

echo the blues in the egg is its own art installation, and a walk-in pantry

gives Billie ample space for foodstuffs and a conveniently located wine

refrigerator for dinner parties and get-togethers.

Adjoining the kitchen is the formal dining room that has a built-in

buffet and a dining table that extends to accommodate 10 guests. The

courtyard offers ample room for entertaining and a prized part of the

McCormicks’ art collection. Local artist Guinotte Wise’s “Bear Air” is

a whimsical sculpture that Billie says is always a conversation piece.

The couple has adapted well to their move into the city. “We

enjoy walking to the restaurants on the Plaza and being so close

to Brookside,” Scott says. “And we love coming home,”

Billie adds.

Custom cabinetry helps define the space and look

of this project. Read what other custom fabricators

have to say about designing a completely unique

alute, Cin-Cin, Cheers! Toasting in any language is

undeniably celebratory, particularly in these uncertain times

when sharing a fine meal and beverage in the company of

friends becomes a joyous way to give thanks.

There’s comfort in knowing the pantry is brimming and soup’s on

the stove. But when it comes time to pop the cork on your favorite

vintage, a better option is at hand than reaching for a bottle you’ve

stashed in the closet: your own wine cellar.

Whether you’re just getting started with your collection or are a long-

time wine enthusiast, storing and caring for your cache is critical to

protect your investment.

There are two types of wine cellars to consider: active and passive.

Active cellars, or ‘rooms,’ are usually built above or below ground.

Temperature and humidity are critical factors that must be maintained

through a specialized climate-control system properly constructed and

highly insulated.

Cellaring wine at home is proving to be a satisfying wayto enjoy your private stock whenever you wish.

Passive cellars are not climate-controlled and are usually

underground. Think caves, which provide an ideal environment where

temperature (cool) and humidity (damp) are constant and there’s

neither vibration nor light, perfect conditions for wine storage.

Wine, being a perishable food product, must be protected from heat,

light, vibration, temperature and fluctuations in humidity. Keeping

that in mind, when wines are properly stored, they mature in aroma

and flavor.

Just like caves that actively store wine throughout the world, a

temperature between 55-58 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal for short- and

long-term storage. Humidity should hover around 70 percent. Low

humidity will encourage mold and rot; if it’s too high, corks will shrink,

causing air to seep into the bottles.

Don’t forget about two other factors: light and vibration. Light

causes wine to age too fast; therefore, dark bottles and a dark place

like a cellar are optimal. Similarly, the less vibration wine sustains the

better. Your best bet is safely cradling your precious investment in a

racking system or bin.

According to the professionals and their clients, designing a wine

cellar is one of the great pleasures in life. A well-designed wine cellar

Beauty, Function and INSPIRATION

Inspired by the rustic charm of Italian cellars,Amber Gardner designed her client’s cellar

to have the same Old World appeal.

Designer Michelle Holbrook turned a ratherawkward space into a high-functioning storage area.

not only renders a collection safe but is also a great source of pride.

The wine cellar showcases a collector’s dream in a room totally

customized to individual taste.

Eric Sherwood and his partners Jarrett and Heidi Gandy started a

business designing wine cellars for that very reason. “Five years ago,

I was looking for someone to build me a wine cellar from A to Z,” Eric

says. When I couldn’t find anyone who could build cabinetry the way

I wanted, I spoke with my friend Jarrett, a master wood craftsman. The

opportunity presented itself to merge our talents, thus launching our

niche business.”

Since then, the three have become partners in Wine Storage Designs.

“We’re in the business of listening to our clients, finding out if they

just want storage or a showpiece, then constructing exactly to their

specifications. It’s just like building a home, only on a smaller scale,”

he adds.

That’s exactly why Stacy and Scott Colangelo hired the company to

build Scott’s cellar in his south Johnson County home. “Scott was just

Page 112: Kansas City Home & Garden

110 • KCHANDG.COM

getting started collecting and wanted a

showplace that offered storage, expansion

options and a tasting area. The narrow,

200-square-foot L-shaped room painted a

deep burgundy highlights a 4-foot by 4-

foot picture window that opens into the

cellar from the bar/staircase in the

Colangelos’ lower level,” Eric says.

Complementing this handsome room is

slate flooring, an elaborate vertical and

arched mahogany racking system, and

tasting table inset with sliding drawers

for Scott’s most cherished stock. This

comprehensive use of space offers the

option of eventually storing 750 bottles.

In direct contrast to the Colangelos’

sleek design is Jim and Teresa Lippert’s

wine cellar. Impressed with the cellars they

visited in Italy, they came back eager to

replicate the Old World ambiance.

“What was most striking was how rustic

yet charming [the Italian cellars] were,”

Teresa notes.

The Lipperts turned to interior designer

Amber Gardner, who sat down with the

couple and designed a 10-foot by 10-foot

cellar located between the kitchen and

dining room.

“The Lipperts entertain regularly, so

positioning this room between these two

high-traffic areas made sense,” says

Amber, who laid out her ideas on-site.

The entire cellar is like stepping into a

Tuscan grotto, which is evident the moment

one walks through the glass and iron-

scrolled door, with its European-style

antique pavers and 9-foot double-groin-

vaulted ceiling adorned with a crystal

chandelier. The glazed walls, faux painted

with aged stucco and brick, are also

designed with individual trim pieces, leaving

room only for a bottle, glass or votive.

Hand-in-hand with the vintage

atmosphere is racking space that holds

approximately 500 bottles. In addition to

a tasting table with a travertine top and

open area beneath for storing cases,

Amber designed a built-in humidor.

“We wanted a serene, rustic impression,

which is exactly what we achieved. It’s as

if the wine has been stored here for years,”

she says.

Cellaring wine can be the domain of

both homeowners. But in a cellar recently

designed by Michelle Holbrook, owner of

Michelle’s Wine Cellars, one Mission Hills

couple realized their cellar was primarily

the husband’s ‘baby.’

Architect Wolfgang Trost, Michelle and

builder Bryce Gahagan maximized the

75-square-foot space with one curved

wall. “We installed California all-heart

redwood racking that includes individual

bottle racking, wine lockers, case storage,

diamond cubes, glass racks, quarter-round

shelving and vertical bottle displays,”

Michelle describes. “The room is painted a

warm wheat color that complements the

floor constructed out of ‘cooperage,’ or

reclaimed wood, from wine barrels.”

The design trio accomplished their

mission — the owner is presently expanding

his stock, diligently organizing by

appellation and varietals.

Pride comes from knowing a collection

can be deftly structured in this fashion if the

homeowner is so inclined. Designer Dan

Andersen wants to make sure that his Prairie

Village client will have that opportunity.

Currently crafting a unique home, Dan

is highly enthusiastic about his project.

“The home’s appointments have been

carefully designed, right down to the

wine cellar located in the lower-level

kitchen. Though not overly large, the 6-

foot by 8-foot cellar demonstrates expert

craftsmanship, particularly the groin-

vaulted limestone ceiling that took 240

hours to complete,” he says.

A keen sense of detail begins with

the raw-cut stone stairs accented by a

swirled metal handrail leading downstairs.

Imbedded between two sheets of glass, the

same swirl design (in hard maple instead of

metal) is repeated in the cellar door.

Inside the softly lit room, vertical and

diagonal merlot-colored racking for 500

bottles climbs two dried-stacked brick

walls. Adjacent is a granite-topped tasting

station with additional room for storage.

“The room is compact but creatively

designed with an accent on expert storage

within a distinctively secure environment,”

Dan explains.

Bragging rights are in order when it

comes down to these gem-like wine cellars.

Individually, all of these homeowners have

taken into account their own personal

drinking habits, balanced features versus

space with price, and determined the best

cellar for their needs. Their professional

designers have followed suit, melding

form with function and ultimately yielding

beautiful rooms.

Call it getting green for going green. Uncle Sam is giving you a

nice chunk of change for making some environmentally friendly

changes in your home. Under the new energy efficiency tax credit

program, homeowners can receive 30 percent of the cost of a qualified

home improvement/product up to a maximum of $1,500.

The maximum tax credit has been raised from $500 to $1,500 for

the two-year period of 2009 and 2010. All home improvements must

meet all performance specifications for their category.

Some conditions and caveats to consider:● Proof of purchase: Must provide a sales receipt (Federal law

requires itemized receipts) for product(s) only.

● Include product labels or manufacturer’s certification statement.

● Must be used for remodeling or replacement (new construction

does not qualify for the new tax credit).

● Energy-efficient products must be purchased and placed in

service during 2009 or 2010 (more specifically, between February 17,

2009, and December 31, 2010).

● The tax credit of $1,500 is a combined total for 2009 and 2010

energy-efficiency improvements.

● Installation and other labor costs do not qualify for the tax credit.

Clay Lyon, owner of Lyon Construction + Design and a former

energy conservation program coordinator and reviewer, utilizes an

energy-efficient approach to his work. “If we are planning an addition

or remodel, we will incorporate components that comply with

the requirements,” he says. This includes environmentally friendly

windows, doors, insulation and mechanical systems.

Here is a glance at eligible home improvements/products:

WINDOWS & DOORSYour windows and doors comprise one category where you can start

making your home more energy efficient. As of June 1, 2009, eligible

windows and doors must have both of the following:

● a U-Factor equal to or less than 0.30

● a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) equal to or less than 0.30

One example of a manufacturer meeting the new guidelines is

Andersen Windows, which offers an entire line of eligible windows

and doors with its EcoExcel Energy Performance Package.

HVACEfficiency levels have been modified to reflect the highest tier of the

CEE High-Efficiency Specification for Residential HVAC Systems for

equipment placed in service.

According to Bill Jones, operations manager at Midwest Heating

Cooling and Plumbing, furnaces that are 95-percent efficient or

higher qualify for the tax credit. “Air conditioners that are 16 SEER or

higher and heat pumps that are 15 SEER or higher are also eligible,”

he adds.

Bill says that an upgrade can cost anywhere between $2,500-

$10,000 for HVAC products, depending on how big the system is.

So far, he says the tax credit has appealed to many homeowners.

“We’ve literally sold hundreds of systems,” he notes.

While there is a cap of $1,500 on most energy-efficient products,

Bill notes there is no limit on geothermal heat pumps. “If you spend

$20,000, you will get $6,000 in tax credit.” Additionally, solar water

heaters and solar panels are not subject to the $1,500 maximum.

Page 118: Kansas City Home & Garden

INSULATIONEnergy-efficient insulation in your home is

also eligible for tax credits. The Hayes

Company offers an entire line of insulating

products for walls, attics and basements.

Fiberglass, blown cellulose and spray foam

with renewable content are just a few of the

products offered that are eligible under the

program’s guidelines.

Tim Hayes, retail sales manager for The

Hayes Company, says the average cost for

an installation job is $1,500, of which

approximately 60 percent is on material

(labor is not eligible under the tax credits). In

this case, a homeowner can expect to receive

$200-300 in tax credits. “It makes the payback

look better. For energy-saving options, that

takes a year off payback,” he says.

ROOFINGRadiant barrier decking is another tax credit-

eligible improvement that can reduce cooling

costs in addition to improving duct and

insulation performance at home. Designed

to reduce attic temperatures, a radiant barrier

is a type of reflective installation that

reduces radiant heat to ducts and insulation

located below it by deflecting radiated heat

from the roof.

“It’s been around for a while but

just hasn’t been readily used,” says Jerry

Fleenor, general manager of Bordner

Installation, which carries radiant barrier

decking. With this roofing option, living

areas and air-conditioning ductwork stay

cooler, minimizing the energy needed to

maintain comfortable temperatures (and

lowering your energy bill!).

With the new energy tax credit, there’s

more incentive than ever to upgrade to a

more energy-efficient home. As Clay says,

it’s about “getting people to take the next

step and be slightly motivated [because] in

the end, we all pay for the cost of using

that energy.”
