THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs host a squad from Baltimore for the first time since the Colts traveled to Kansas City in ’80 as the Ravens make their inaugural visit to Arrowhead on Sunday. The Chiefs have won all three of their previous meetings with the Ravens and will seek to extend that winning streak against Baltimore in a contest full of postseason implications for both squads. The Chiefs have won their last five contests at Arrowhead and own an impressive 12-2 (.857) mark at home since the start of the 2005 campaign. Only Indianapolis and Seattle boast better home records over that span with 13-1 marks. Kansas City has been victorious in five of its last seven games under Herm Edwards and is seeking to get back on the winning track after suffering a 31-28 OT loss at Cleveland (12/3). In total, three of the Chiefs five losses on the season have come by three points, with two of those setbacks coming on the road in overtime. The Chiefs are currently part of a five-team logjam at 7-5 in the AFC standings with those five squads all competing for two Wild Card spots. Baltimore sits atop the AFC North standings with a 9-3 record and could come one step closer to clinching the division crown with a victory against the Chiefs. The Ravens had won five consecutive games before suffering a 13-7 loss on Thursday night at Cincinnati (11/30). The Ravens are jockeying for position in the race for homefield advantage in the AFC and are currently battling Indianapolis (10-2), San Diego (10-2) and New England (9-3) for that distinction. Kansas City’s offense continues to churn behind RB Larry Johnson, who ranks second in the NFL in both rushing (1,312) and yards from scrimmage (1,687). TE Tony Gonzalez is coming off a two- TD performance at Cleveland (12/3), giving him 61 career TDs catches. He needs just two more TDs to bypass TE Shannon Sharpe (62) for the most TD receptions by a tight end in NFL history. Defensively, the Chiefs have allowed just 11.5 ppg in their last two home contests. THE SERIES Kansas City is 3-0 in regular season play against the Ravens, making Baltimore the only current NFL franchise that has never registered a victory against the Chiefs. All three of those previous meetings with the Ravens have taken place in Baltimore. Kansas City and New England are the only two franchises that the Ravens have faced three or more times in regular or postseason action and have never defeated. Baltimore is the only current NFL team that has yet to face the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Head coach Gunther Cunningham guided the Chiefs to their inaugural victory against the Ravens, leading Kansas City to a 35-8 win in a Thursday night contest at Baltimore (10/21/99). Kansas City picked off Ravens QB Stoney Case three times, returning two of those INTs for touchdowns. Meanwhile TE Tony Gonzalez added scoring receptions of 11 and 22 yards. WR Dante Hall became the first player in NFL history to record a kickoff or punt return TD in three consecutive games as he returned a kickoff for a 97-yard TD with 5:27 left to play to give the Chiefs a 17-10 triumph at Baltimore (9/26/03), a contest that marked the 100th career victory of Dick Vermeil’s NFL coaching tenure. After posting an uncharacteristic 0-3 record to start the 2004 campaign, the Chiefs got their initial win of that season with a 27-24 victory on Monday Night Football at Baltimore (10/4/04). RB Priest Holmes racked up 125 rushing yards and a pair of TDs against his former club, while the Kansas City defense sacked QB Kyle Boller 4.0 times and limited the Ravens to 207 yards of total offense. LB DERRICK THOMAS’ RECORD-SETTING LEGACY LB Derrick Thomas is now in his third season of eligibility for the Pro

Football Hall of Fame and is one of 25 semi-finalists for the Class of 2007. Already a member of the Hall of Fame’s NFL All-Decade Team of the 1990s. No player registered more sacks (116.5) than Thomas from ’90-99. Thanks in large part to Thomas and the Chiefs defense, only San Francisco (113-47) and Buffalo (103-57) produced better regular season records over that 10-year span than KC (102-58).

Thomas has been a finalist in the Hall of Fame selection process the past two years. If elected this year, he would become the 10th member of the Chiefs organization to earn a place in Canton, an illustrious list that already includes three defensive stalwarts – LB Bobby Bell (HOF ’83), LB Willie Lanier (HOF ’86) and DT Buck Buchanan (HOF ’90).

During the decade of the ’90s, no team could top the +128 turnover differential and 365 takeaways produced by Kansas City. Thomas still holds the NFL’s single-game record with 7.0 sacks vs. Seattle (11/11/90). Thomas led the NFL with 20.0 sacks in ’90, making him just one of six players in league history to register a season with 20.0 or more sacks.

GONZALEZ AMONG THE NFL’S TIGHT END ELITE Chiefs seven-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (705), receiving yardage (8,538) and TD receptions (61), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (815-10,060, 62 TDs). Gonzalez’s 61 total TDs with the Chiefs trail only RB Priest Holmes (83) in KC annals. Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 8,552 combined net yards, trailing only WR Dante Hall (11,891). Kansas City owns a 10-2 (.833) record in games when Gonzalez registers two or more TD catches. Gonzalez’s initial two-TD game came in a 35-8 win at Baltimore (10/21/99).

LARRY JOHNSON’S RUSHING RAMPAGE Chiefs RB Larry Johnson has topped the 100-yard rushing plateau in six of his last seven starts, averaging 136.4 rushing ypg over that seven-game span. In total, Johnson has averaged 150.9 yards of total offense and has scored 11 TDs over that timeframe. NFL RBs have combined to produce 19 individual 150-yard rushing performances this season. Remarkably, Johnson has produced an NFL-high four games with 150+ rushing yards over the past seven games. Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson is the only other player in the league with three or more 150-yard rushing games in 2006. On the season, Johnson ranks second in the NFL by averaging 109.3 rushing yards per game and 140.6 yards from scrimmage per game. Tomlinson leads the NFL in both rushing ypg (110.3) and yards from scrimmage per game (149.5). Johnson ranks third in Kansas City history with 43 rushing TDs and needs just two more to surpass Hall of Fame RB Marcus Allen (44) for second in franchise annals. Here’s a look at Johnson’s numbers the past seven games.

Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, 2006. He rejoined the Chiefs after five-year stint (2001-05) as head coach of the N.Y. Jets. Edwards originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs for Kansas City (’92-94).

Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 24, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00 before taking over as the head coaching reins of the Jets.

Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in ’76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia (’77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to hiarrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

Prepare for a Defensive Duel as the Ravens Make Their Arrowhead Debut by Pete Moris

Chiefs-Ravens Statistical Appetizers The Chiefs are 7-2 in their last nine games against franchises playing

in their initial regular season contest at Arrowhead … Brian Billick will make his first appearance as an NFL head coach at Arrowhead on Sunday. Since ’94, the Chiefs are 24-5 (.828) against head coaches making their regular season debuts at Arrowhead … In 151 career regular season appearances Ravens QB Steve McNair has taken snaps in 35 different stadiums – including 11 that are no longer in NFL service or have been demolished. Sunday’s contest will mark his first game at Arrowhead.

The Arrowhead Advantage Dating back to the start of the start of the ’95 season, Kansas City

owns a 70-24 (.745) record at Arrowhead, a home record that only Denver (73-21) can top over that span. Dating back to 2005 campaign, only Seattle (13-1) and Indianapolis (13-1) boast better home records than the 12-2 (.857) mark shared by Kansas City and Chicago. KC’s Scoring Defense is Always Stout at Arrowhead Kansas City has won 22 consecutive games at Arrowhead when

holding foes to 21 points or less, a mark that ties Seattle for the third-longest active streak in the league. Kansas City is 53-7 (.883) at Arrowhead when holding opponents to 21 points or less dating back to ’95. Dating back to 2002, Baltimore is just 3-21 (.125) on the road when being held to 21 points or less. The Ravens have lost 12 of their last 13 games in such a circumstance with their only win during that stretch coming by a 15-14 count at Cleveland (9/24).

The Chiefs have allowed an average of 16.8 ppg at home this season and have permitted just 16.4 ppg in the club’s seven victories. Over the past five games KC has held four opponents to 17 points or less. Baltimore has averaged 24.3 ppg in its last six contests, but has averaged just 5.0 ppg in its two road losses in 2006.

Baltimore Boasts a Strong Scoring Defense, As Well The Ravens currently lead the NFL in total defense (267.4 ypg) and

rank second in the league in scoring defense, allowing just 13.3 points per game. Baltimore has limited nine opponents to 17 points or less, a total that trails only New England (10) for the highest total of any defense in the league this season.

The Ravens are the only team in the league that has held all of its opponents under 27 points this season. Baltimore gave up a season-high 26 points in a 27-26 win at Tennessee (11/12). The Ravens are especially stingy in the third quarter, allowing a league-low 13 points. Baltimore has also allowed just 29 points in the first quarter, a total that ranks as the sixth-lowest in the NFL. The Ravens have held eight opponents scoreless in the first quarter.

Chiefs Seeking Another Strong First Half Showing The Chiefs have outscored their foes by a 71-36 margin in the first

half of their five wins at Arrowhead this season. In total, KC’s defense has held opponents scoreless in the first quarter of six games in 2006. Baltimore has been shut out three times in the first quarter this season.

Kansas City has won seven straight home games when leading at halftime and is 51-7 (.879) in regular season action at Arrowhead when leading at intermission dating back to ’95. Meanwhile, the Ravens own an identical 51-7 (.879) record when leading at halftime dating back to ’99, including a 5-0 mark this season.

The Chiefs have never trailed the Ravens at halftime in their three previous meetings. KC shut out Baltimore in the first half of their initial two meetings. The two teams were tied at 17-17 in Kansas City’s most recent contest against the Ravens, a 27-24 Chiefs win at Baltimore (10/4/04). The Ravens are just 15-38 (.283) when trailing at halftime dating back to 2000, but have posted a 4-2 record in such games this season.

KC is 13th in the league in scoring (21.4 ppg), while Baltimore is 14th (21.3 ppg). The Chiefs are averaging 25.3 ppg at home in 2006, while Baltimore is averaging 19.0 ppg on the road.

Chiefs Seek to Win the Turnover Battle Once Again vs. Baltimore The Chiefs have won 17 consecutive home games with a positive

turnover ratio, the third-longest active streak in the NFL behind only Baltimore (32 games) and New England (19 games). Kansas City has not committed a single turnover during its three-game winning streak against the Ravens, posting a pristine +7 mark in those victories thanks to six INTs and one fumble recovery. The Chiefs own 60 points off turnovers and have registered 37 of those points in their past five games. Dating back to 2005, Kansas City is 12-2 (.857) in games with a positive turnover differential.

Baltimore has posted a 53-4 (.930) record with a positive turnover margin under Brian Billick, including a streak of nine consecutive wins. Conversely, Baltimore is just 3-28 (.097) on the road with a negative turnover differential over that same timeframe. The Ravens have lost 10 of their last 11 games when negative on the road with their lone victory coming by a 27-26 count at Tennessee (11/12) when Baltimore was -1.

The Ravens currently lead the NFL with a +14 (29 takes/15 gives) turnover differential. Only Chicago (39) has forced more takeaways than Baltimore (29). Meanwhile, only Chicago (140) and Dallas (126) have produced more points off turnovers than Baltimore (94). Conversely, Baltimore’s foes have scored an NFL-low 20 points off of Ravens turnovers.

Kansas City Typically Controls the Ground Game at Arrowhead The Chiefs are averaging 164.3 rushing ypg at home in 2006, the third-

highest home rushing average in the NFL. Kansas City will face a Baltimore defense that currently ranks second in the league, permitting just 75.8 rushing ypg. The Chiefs are 16-5 (.762) when RB Larry Johnson posts a 100-yard rushing game, including a perfect 12-0 mark at Arrowhead. The Ravens have allowed an NFL-low 17 100-yard rushers since Brian Billick’s arrival in Baltimore in ’99, posting a 7-10 (.412) record in those games. Titans RB Travis Henry (107 yards) is the only player to exceed the 100-yard plateau against the Ravens this season.

Baltimore is 22-7 (.759) when RB Jamal Lewis tops the 100-yard rushing plateau. Lewis will be pitted against a Kansas City defense that has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 21 consecutive home games, the longest active streak in the NFL. Dating back to the start of the 2005 campaign, KC has allowed just an average of just 80.9 rushing ypg at home, the second-lowest mark in the league over that span behind only Baltimore (80.6 ypg).

Chiefs RB Larry Johnson Excels at Hitting Paydirt Chiefs RB Larry Johnson has scored each of Kansas City’s last 29

rushing TDs, the longest streak by a player in the league since the AFL-NFL merger. Johnson has scored 48 total TDs (rushing and receiving) in 44 career NFL contests, an average of 1.09 per game. The only other player in NFL history with at least 40 game appearances who has averaged more TDs per game is Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson. Tomlinson has scored 106 TDs in 91 games, an average of 1.16 TDs per game.

Johnson has racked up his totals in just 24 career starts. Johnson’s 43 rushing TDs are the second-highest total in franchise history, meaning he has averaged 1.79 rushing TDs per start during his KC career. He has scored 34 of his 43 rushing TDs in a starting role. By way of comparison, Tomlinson has averaged 1.04 rushing TDs per start during his career, owning 95 rushing scores in 91 career starts.

Dating back to 2002, Kansas City is 22-2 (.917) at Arrowhead when scoring two or more rushing TDs. Baltimore has won nine consecutive games when scoring two or more rushing TDs. KC has permitted a total of just five rushing TDs in its last 14 games at Arrowhead.

Green Owns Stellar Numbers at Arrowhead After December 1st QB Trent Green owns a perfect 12-0 record as KC’s starter in regular

season games played at Arrowhead Stadium after December 1st. Over that 12-game span, Green has completed 70.6 percent (228 of 323) of his passes for 3,030 yards with 22 TDs and just eight INTs in those games, numbers that translate into an impressive 112.3 rating. On a brisk afternoon on the shores of Lake Erie, Kansas City watched Cleveland erase a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to claim a 31-28 upset win on a 33-yard field goal in overtime.

Only a week prior Cleveland was shut out at home, but came out firing on its opening drive. QB Charlie Fyre hit WR Joe Jurevicius for a pair of passes before capping the drive with a perfectly-placed throw to WR Braylon Edwards for a 23-yard TD.

The Chiefs offense needed a possession to get warmed up, but on their second drive they were able to put the ball in the end zone. RB Larry Johnson carried on five of the first seven plays before QB Trent Green threaded a 22-yard TD pass to WR Eddie Kennison to tie the score at 7-7.

Kansas City did not slow down on its next possession as Green and TE Tony Gonzalez found a rhythm. The Chiefs quarterback placed a pass on the back of Cleveland S Brodney Pool in the end zone where Gonzalez went over the defender to pull in the nine-yard scoring pass.

Cleveland would respond by converting a fourth-and-one at the Kansas City 19-yard line. Three plays later Frye found RB Jason Wright for a 16-yard gain down to the one-yard line. From there RB Reuben Droughns crossed the goal line from one-yard out to tie the score at 14-14 at the half.

The Chiefs opened the second half with a 39-yard Green-to-Kennison pass on the very first play. Then Green hit RB Michael Bennett and Gonzalez on back-to-back pass plays before TE Kris Wilson made a shoe-string catch for a six-yard touchdown.

After exchanging turnovers, Browns P Dave Zastudil pinned the Chiefs at the Cleveland one-yard line. Unfazed, Kansas City simply marched 99 yards for its fourth touchdown of the day. Facing a third-and-six at the KC five-yard line, Johnson took a handoff around left end for a 16-yard pickup. Using a mix of the run and pass Kansas City used 14 plays and 7:41 as Green threw his fourth TD pass of the day, a 23-yarder to Gonzalez.

Cleveland would cut into the 28-14 score when backup QB Derek Anderson – subbing for an injured starter Charlie Frye – led back-to-back fourth-quarter scoring drives. A 54-yard shovel pass to Wright keyed the first TD, a six-yard pass to TE Steve Heiden. Anderson would find Heiden again minutes later, this time for a three-yard touchdown to tie the game at 28-28 with 35 seconds left.

The two teams would trade turnovers on the final two possessions of regulation as Green fumbled, but LB Kawika Mitchell intercepted the ball back to force overtime.

Kansas City won the coin toss in the extra period, but was forced to punt. From there, Cleveland put together a game-winning drive. Facing a second-and-15 from the Kansas City 45-yard line Anderson escaped out to the right and broke a tackle attempt by S Greg Wesley to pick up 33 yards. The Browns handed the ball to RB Jason Wright on two consecutive plays to set the ball up on the left hash. K Phil Dawson then walked on the field and calmly drilled a 33-yard field goal to cap the Browns 31-28 comeback win.

GAME NOTES• Gonzalez’s second scoring reception of the game and 61st of his career moved him ahead of TE Jerry Smith (60) for the second-highest TD reception total by a tight end in NFL history.

The Chiefs registered their initial win of the 2004 campaign on Monday Night Football, getting a 27-24 victory at Baltimore. Kansas City dominated the Ravens vaunted defense from the game’s outset, while the Chiefs defense turned in one of their finest performances of the season as KC pushed its all-time record vs. the Ravens to a perfect 3-0. Impressively, the Chiefs held the ball for 39:43, compared to 20:17 for Baltimore, KC’s biggest edge in that category since ’97. KC registered four scoring drives that consumed 10 plays or more. After Baltimore opened the scoring with a 50-yard FG from K Matt Stover, the Chiefs responded with a 10-play, 60-yard march that culminated with a three-yard scoring dart from QB Trent Green to TE Jason Dunn. KC’s defense then forced the Ravens three-and-out to set up a 42-yard FG from Chiefs K Lawrence Tynes to give KC a 10-3 edge. Baltimore got its initial TD of the game on an elaborate flea-flicker that went from RB Jamal Lewis back to QB Kyle Boller and concluded with a 57-yard pass from Boller to WR Randy Hymes to tie the count at 10-10. The Chiefs offense then gobbled up 8:08 off the clock with a 14-play, 79-yard drive that ended when RB Priest Holmes vaulted into the end zone from the four-yard line. Holmes carried the ball 33 times – the second-highest total of his career – racking up 125 yards and a pair of TDs. As a team, KC ground out 46 carries for 178 yards against the Ravens defense. Baltimore’s biggest play of the game came with just 1:47 left in the first half as PR B.J. Sams ran back a punt for a 58-yard TD to tie the count at 17-17. The Chiefs took the second-half kickoff and marched 60 yards in 12 plays to get a 38-yard Tynes FG to go ahead 20-17, a lead KC would carry into the fourth quarter. A 13-play, 80-yard drive by the Chiefs culminated with a one-yard TD by Holmes on the first snap of the final frame gave KC a 27-17 lead with 14:57 left to play. But Baltimore wouldn’t go away, constructing a solid drive of its own behind Lewis, who finished the game with 73 yards, 38 of which came on a 62-yard drive that was capped when he scored from one yard out to make to the count 27-24. KC’s defense took it from there, rebuffing the Ravens on their final two possessions to secure the victory. The victory marked KC’s first back-to-back road wins on Monday Night Football since ’74-75.

GAME NOTES• Chiefs RB Priest Holmes became only the fourth RB since the AFL-NFL merger in ’70 to reach the 5,000-yard plateau with a team in 50 games or less. Eric Dickerson (45 games - Rams), Earl Campbell (46 games - Oilers) and Terrell Davis (50 games - Broncos) previously accomplished that feat. Monday’s game at Baltimore was Holmes’ 50th with the Chiefs.• Kansas City’s 46 rushing attempts were the club’s most since having 48 vs. Oakland (12/9/97).• KC held the ball for 39:43, the club’s most lopsided advantage in time of possession since owning the ball for 41:30 in a 30-10 win vs. Oakland (12/9/97).
