THE MATCH-UP Kansas City and Denver will meet for the first time this season in an important AFC West contest for both squads as the Chiefs host the Broncos. The Chiefs remain in a first-place tie with San Diego atop the AFC West standings with a 4-4 record, but defeated the Chargers earlier this year by a 30-16 margin at San Diego (9/30). The Chiefs have won 10 of their last 12 meetings with Denver at Arrowhead and will be seeking to register their fifth consecutive home victory over their division rivals. The Chiefs have rebounded from an 0-2 start to register victories in four of their last six contests. Kansas City is coming off a wild 33-22 home loss vs. Green Bay (11/4). Since the start of the ’90 campaign, the Chiefs are 26-9 (.743) in their next game at Arrowhead following a home loss. Kansas City hasn’t lost back-to-back games at Arrowhead since 2004. After starting the season 2-0, Denver has lost five of its last six contests after suffering a 44-7 setback at Detroit (11/4). Kansas City’s defense has been one of the primary reasons that the Chiefs are atop the AFC West standings. The Chiefs defense has allowed opposing offenses to score just 15.6 points per game, a mark that ranks fifth in the league. In terms of total points allowed, KC ranks ninth in the league, giving up 18.3 ppg. Meanwhile, Denver is 28th in that category, allowing 28.4 ppg. The Chiefs have held seven of their eight opponents to 20 points or less this season. Denver has been held to 20 points or less in each of its five losses. KC has permitted 14.0 ppg in its four wins and has allowed 22.5 ppg in its four setbacks. The Broncos have scored 23.0 ppg in their three wins, but have managed just 11.4 ppg in their five losses. Offensively, QB Damon Huard owns a 5-2 record as a starter at Arrowhead. His two favorite targets this season have been TE Tony Gonzalez and rookie WR Dwayne Bowe. Gonzalez has 52 receptions and is on pace to break his team single-season record of 102 catches in 2004. Bowe has 29 receptions for 499 yards and is on schedule to establish new Chiefs rookie standards in both areas. Two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson suffered a foot sprain vs. Green Bay (11/4). If he is unable to play on Sunday, three-time Pro Bowl RB Priest Holmes could make his initial start in 742 days. Holmes’ last start came at San Diego (10/30/05). Up next for the Chiefs is a road contest at Indianapolis (11/18), while Denver hosts Tennessee on Monday Night Football (11/19). THE SERIES Kansas City holds a 52-42-0 (.553) all-time advantage over Denver in the 93 previous meetings between the two clubs (92 regular season, one postseason). The Chiefs own 52 wins against the Broncos and the Raiders, the club’s highest victory totals against any individual franchises. The Chiefs have won 12 of the last 16 regular season meetings between these two clubs at Arrowhead, including 10 of the last 12 contests. Kansas City claimed a 19-10 win in Denver’s most recent visit to Arrowhead, a prime-time Thanksgiving contest (11/23/06). The Broncos have won all six games in the series played at INVESCO Field, including a 9-6 OT decision (9/17/06). Kansas City owns a four-game winning streak against Denver at Arrowhead. The Broncos are seeking to avoid their first five-game losing streak at Arrowhead. Denver lost nine straight games at Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium from ’63-71. The Chiefs and Broncos have split their season series five out of the past six years with the home team winning the last nine Kansas City-Denver contests. Kansas City’s last sweep of Denver came in 2000, while Denver’s most recent sweep came in 2002. The last time the road squad prevailed in a Kansas City-Denver contest was a 37-34 OT victory by the Broncos at Arrowhead (10/20/02). Denver produced a 14-10 victory in the only postseason meeting between the two teams, a ’97 AFC Divisional Playoff Game at Arrowhead (1/4/98). REGULAR SEASON GAME #9 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (4-4) VS. REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a

true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America’s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the ‘60s and actually coined the term “Super Bowl.”

As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt’s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact that league has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt’s humble styles, the letters “LH” are subtly displayed

on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC’s jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player.

GONZALEZ OWNS NFL TD RECORD FOR TIGHT ENDS Eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 65 career TD catches, the most by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (773) and receiving yardage (9,325), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (815-10,060). Gonzalez owns 21 career 100-yard receiving games, including a 10-catch, 109-yard, one-TD performance last week vs. Green Bay (11/4). Those 21 100-yard games are the most in KC history and are third in NFL annals by a TE, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24), and Jackie Smith (22). Gonzalez has a reception in 107 consecutive contests, meaning only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE. Gonzalez’s catch currently ranks sixth among active NFL players. Gonzalez is on pace to finish the year with 104 receptions, which would break the franchise single-season record of 102 he set in 2004. He is also on pace to finish the year with 1,230 receiving yards, which would mark the second-highest seasonal tally of his career. He had 1,258 yards in 2004. In 20 career games (18 starts) against the Broncos, Gonzalez has 76 receptions for 891 yards (11.7 avg.) with four TDs and a pair of 100-yard games.

Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, 2006. The first coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fifth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a five-year stint (2001-05) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs (’92-94).

Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00. Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in ’76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia (’77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

MIKE SHANAHAN NFL Head Coach: 15th Year NFL Coach Overall: 24th Year NFL Overall: 142-91 (.609) Regular Season: 134-86 (.609) Postseason: 8-5 (.615) Record w/Broncos: 126-74 (.630) Record w/Raiders: 8-12 (.400) AFC West Exp: 19th Year College: Eastern Illinois (’74)

Mike Shanahan was named the 11th head coach in Broncos history on January 31, 1995, after spending three seasons (’92-94) as San Francisco’s offensive coordinator. Just the fifth coach in NFL history to lead his club to back-to-back Super Bowl titles, Shanahan owns six Super Bowl appearances as a head coach or NFL assistant - five with Denver, including XXXII and XXXIII titles and a win with the 49ers in SB XXIX. Born in Oak Park, Illinois on August 24, 1952, Shanahan began his coaching career at Oklahoma in ’75, before stints at Northern Arizona, Eastern Illinois, Minnesota and Florida.

He entered the pro ranks as the Broncos receivers coach in ’84 before assuming duties as Denver’s offensive coordinator from ’85-87. Shanahan served as head coach of the L.A. Raiders for the ’88 season, plus the first four games of the ’89 season, compiling an 8-12 regular season mark. A former wishbone QB at Eastern Illinois, Shanahan’s playing career was halted when he lost a kidney during the spring of his junior year.

Shanahan’s 126-74 (.630) regular season mark and 8-5 (.615) postseason record both rank as the top winning percentages in Denver history.

Chiefs, Broncos Set for an AFC West Showdown at Arrowhead by Pete Moris

Chiefs Seek to Continue Division Dominance at Arrowhead The Chiefs are 11-1 against AFC West foes at Arrowhead dating back to

2003, including a streak of eight consecutive wins. That streak ties Indianapolis for the longest active stretch of home division wins in the league. Kansas City began its home winning streak against AFC West foes with a 45-17 victory vs. Denver (12/19/04) and hasn’t lost at home to an AFC West foe since dropping a 34-31 decision vs. San Diego (11/28/04).

KC has already registered division road wins at San Diego and at Oakland this season and will be seeking to win its first three division contests of the year since winning five straight to begin the 2003 campaign. KC is 6-2 against division opponents under Herm Edwards, while Denver is 1-4 in its last five AFC West contests. The Chiefs are 15-5 at home since the start of the 2005 campaign, while Denver is 11-8 on the road over the same span.

Close Calls Frequently Occur in Chiefs-Broncos Games Dating back to ’94, six Chiefs-Broncos games at Arrowhead have been

decided by a defensive or special teams score in the fourth quarter or OT. Kansas City has won four of those six contests. Denver has won three times in KC in the regular season going back to ’94 with two of those wins coming on FGs in OT. The Chiefs and Broncos have played five overtime games in the all-time series between the two teams, the most OT games of any opponent the Chiefs have faced. Denver claimed the most recent Chiefs-Broncos game with an OT period, winning a 9-6 decision at INVESCO Field (9/17/06).

Chiefs QB Damon Huard is Typically Hot at Arrowhead Chiefs QB Damon Huard owns a 5-2 record as the Chiefs starter at

Arrowhead. In those seven contests, he has connected on 133 of 201 throws (66.2%) for 1,631 yards with 10 TDs and just three INTs, numbers that translate into a 101.4 rating. Huard has produced a rating of 100.0 or better in all five of his victories as a starter at Arrowhead. Denver’s defense ranks 32nd in the league, permitting opposing passers to compile a 105.4 rating and has allowed the last six QBs it has faced to accumulate a 100.0+ rating game.

The Broncos have allowed 14 TD passes and have forced just two INTs in their last six contests, permitting a passer rating of 122.6 in those games. Denver has allowed 15 TD passes on the season. Only Cincinnati (20) and Cleveland (20) have permitted more. KC owns a 7-2 record under Huard in contests when he doesn’t suffer an INT, including all five of his home wins. Denver has forced six INTs in its three wins and owns no INTs in its five losses. Only four clubs own fewer INTs than the Broncos this season.

Arrowhead an Inhospitable Locale for Opposing QBs Kansas City has won 21 of its last 23 games against QBs in their first or

second year as NFL starters who are making their initial appearance as a starter at Arrowhead. Neither QB Jay Cutler nor QB Patrick Ramsey has started in KC. It’s been nearly 30 years since a full-time Broncos starting QB won his initial start at Arrowhead. The last Broncos regular starter to pull off that feat was QB Craig Morton, who guided the Broncos to a 14-7 win at Arrowhead (11/20/77) during Denver’s Super Bowl XII season. Here’s a look at the initial Arrowhead starts for QBs John Elway, Brian Griese and Jake Plummer in a Broncos uniform. KC limited that trio to a composite rating of 45.9 in three KC victories, allowing just one TD pass while forcing five INTs. Griese was the last QB to lead Denver to a win in KC, doing it in 2002.

Dating back to 2002, KC boasts a 24-2 (.923) record at home when it registers 2.0 or more sacks, including a pair of victories over the Broncos. Only seven teams have sacked opposing passers more frequently than Kansas City. The Chiefs are 30-4 (.882) at Arrowhead dating back to ’95 when the club forces two or more INTs, including a perfect 4-0 mark vs. Denver. Kansas City has recorded a pair of pickoffs in four games this season and has limited opposing passers to a 77.3 rating through eight games.

A Strong First Half is Usually Important in Chiefs-Broncos Games Kansas City owns a 53-8 (.869) record at Arrowhead when leading at

halftime dating back to ’95, including wins in nine of the club’s last 10 such contests. The Chiefs led at intermission in both of their meetings with Denver a year ago. The Chiefs own a 9-2 record when holding a halftime lead under Herm Edwards, including each of KC’s last two victories.

Denver owns a 21-5 (.808) record when tied or leading at halftime since the start of the 2005 campaign. The Broncos are 5-9 (.357) when trailing at halftime over the same timeframe. Denver has permitted 124 points in the second half this year, meaning only NYJ (142) and STL (131) have given up more points after intermission. KC has scored 45.2% (56 of 124) of its points in the fourth quarter. Denver has been outscored by a two-to-one margin (58 to 26) in the fourth quarter, while only STL (68) has given up more third-quarter points (66).

More Chiefs-Broncos Scoring Stats Kansas City has held seven of its eight foes to 20 points or less. The Chiefs

are 55-9 (.859) at Arrowhead dating back to ’95 when holding foes to 21 points or less, including victories in 24 of the club’s last 26 games in those circumstances. Denver has been held to 20 points or less in all five of its losses this season. Dating back to 2000, the Broncos are 24-7 (.774) on the road when they hold their opponents to 21 points or less. However, two of those losses have come at Arrowhead: 20-7 (12/17/00) and 19-10 (11/23/06). The Chiefs are 41-0 at Arrowhead dating back to ’90 when holding opponents to 10 points or less, including four victories against Denver. The Chiefs also own an 8-2 record under Herm Edwards when scoring 21 points or more.

KC Always Stresses the Importance of the Turnover Column The Chiefs are 45-4 (.918) at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway margin

dating back to ’95. KC has won 18 consecutive games when positive at home dating back to 2002, the third-longest active streak in the league. KC is 8-2 under head coach Herm Edwards when positive. The Chiefs have posted a +4 turnover mark (10+ takes/6+ gives) in their four wins in 2007.

Denver is 5-20 (.200) on the road with a negative turnover ratio dating back to 2001. Since the start of the 2006 campaign, Denver is 1-9 when negative including a string of seven straight losses. The Broncos are -10 (3 takes/13 gives) in their five losses and are +2 (6 takes/4 gives) in their three wins in 2007.

KC’s Defense Strong in the Scoring Zone, on Third Down KC’s defense leads the league with a 27.8 Red Zone TD pct. (5 of 18).

Denver’s offense is 19th in the NFL with a 46.2 Red Zone TD pct. (12 of 26). The Chiefs are fourth in the league, limiting opponents to 34.9% (38 of 109) on third down. Denver’s offense is fifth in the NFL on third down, converting at a 48.5% clip (48 of 99). Denver’s average scoring drive covers 9.96 plays, the longest average in the league thanks in large part because of the fact they go three-and-out just 13.9% of the time. Only Indianapolis (11.1%) goes three-and-out less frequently. Only Chicago (100), San Francisco (100) and Tampa Bay (99) have had more offensive possessions than Kansas City (98). LAST GAME

Packers 33, Packers 33, CChiefs 22hiefs 22November 11, 2007 • Arrowhead Stadium • 78,988

What began as a defensive slugfest between the Chiefs and Packers turned into a fourth-quarter shootout at Arrowhead. Trailing 13-7 after three quarters, the Chiefs didn’t have enough answers to match Packers QB Brett Favre as both teams combined for 35 fourth-quarter points with Green Bay winning a wild 33-22 decision. Favre checked the final team off of his win list – joining QBs Tom Brady and Peyton Manning as the only other signal callers to defeat all 31 other NFL franchises – by throwing for 360 yards and two TDs on the afternoon. Green Bay mounted a 6-0 lead thanks to a pair of K Mason Crosby field goals in the second quarter. CB Benny Sapp made the Chiefs first big play intercepting Favre and returning it to the Green Bay 30-yard line just before halftime. A defensive pass interference penalty in the end zone set up a one-yard TD dive from RB Larry Johnson. Despite being outgained 181 to 62 in total yards, the Chiefs held an improbable 7-6 lead at halftime. Green Bay LB A.J. Hawk intercepted a Damon Huard third-quarter pass setting up a 13-yard TD pass from Favre to WR Greg Jennings for a 13-7 Packers lead. Green Bay’s TD sparked the Chiefs offense as KC answered with its first prolonged drive. Huard first completed passes of 17 and nine yards to TE Tony Gonzalez. Then Huard slipped a screen pass out to Johnson who was wide open in the left flat. Thirty yards later Johnson was still running, turning the short pass into a TD as the Chiefs took a 14-13 lead. Not to be outdown, Favre hit WR Donald Driver on an incredible 44-yard pass on the very next play, moving the Packers down to the KC 16-yard line. The Chiefs relinquished just a 32-yard Crosby field goal as the Packers regained a 16-14 lead with just under nine minutes to go. The Chiefs would bounce right back with a six-play, 82-yard scoring march. Johnson got the drive jump-started with 19 yards on the first two plays, but suffered a right foot injury on the second play forcing him to the leave the game. A 25-yard defensive pass interference call on CB Charles Woodson would move Kansas City to the GB 17-yard line. From there Huard whizzed a TD pass to Gonzalez, giving the Chiefs a 20-16 lead. RB Priest Holmes would convert the two-point conversion on a dive over the pile to push the lead to 22-16 with 5:18 remaining. That was too much time for Favre. Three straight short completions gave way to a 60-yard touchdown bomb to Jennings, who ran untouched through the Chiefs secondary. The throw was particularly impressive considering Favre delivered the ball off of his back foot and hit the receiver in stride. The sixth lead change of the game gave the Packers a 23-22 advantage that they would never relinquish. Kansas City appeared to be firing right back when Huard hit WR Jeff Webb down the sideline for a 36-yard gain. However a Packers challenge overturned the completion, ruling that Webb’s second foot come down out of bounds. The Chiefs would be forced to punt and gave up another field goal on the ensuing possession. Trailing by four with 1:40 remaining, the stage was set for a comeback drive by Kansas City, but it was not to be. On the third play, Huard was picked off by Woodson near midfield and the interception was returned for the game-clinching touchdown, sealing the 33-22 Packers win.

With Kansas City hosting its first Thanksgiving game since ’69, Arrowhead Stadium was practically bursting at the I-beams. The Chiefs-Broncos match-up marked the first regular season game broadcast live on the NFL Network and the excitement in the air had the feeling of a playoff game. Using the physicality that is becoming the signature of Herm Edwards’ team, the Chiefs pounded out a rugged 19-10 win.

From the opening possession of the game, the Chiefs defense stifled the Broncos running game and forced Denver QB Jake Plummer – who owns a career 0-6 record at Arrowhead Stadium – to beat them. Kansas City limited the visitors to a paltry 38 rushing yards, the lowest Broncos total against KC since ’93. The strategy paid off as Plummer threw an INT to CB Ty Law at the Denver 46-yard line on the club’s first possession. Completions to WRs Eddie Kennison and Dante Hall set up K Lawrence Tynes' 24-yard field goal and staked the Chiefs to a 3-0 lead.

The Chiefs defense forced an INT or punt on each of Denver’s first four drives and the offense capitalized by pounding out a demoralizing 88-yard scoring drive that gobbled up 7:41 off the second-quarter clock and gave Kansas City a 10-0 lead. The Chiefs used 11 runs and just two passes as RB Michael Bennett chipped in 15 yards and RB Larry Johnson racked up 32, including a one-yard touchdown run. Just four days after gashing Oakland for 31 carries and 154 yards, Johnson churned out another 157 rushing yards on 34 attempts.

Denver answered the Chiefs long drive with a hurry-up offense that rattled off 13 plays to move to the KC 12-yard line. WR Javon Walker hauled in four passes for 41 yards, but the Chiefs defense stiffened inside the Red Zone though when Plummer’s third-down pass attempt to WR Rod Smith fell incomplete. K Jason Elam knocked through the 31-yard field goal for Denver’s first points, making the score 10-3 at the half.

Kansas City would move ahead 13-3 with another Tynes field goal on the opening drive of the second half. Moments later, an apparent INT from CB Patrick Surtain would have put the Chiefs in prime position at the Denver 17-yard line. However, an illegal contact penalty on the opposite side of the field gave Denver a first down. The Broncos capitalized on the second chance when Plummer hit TE Stephen Alexander on a one-yard TD pass to cut the KC lead to three at 13-10.

The Chiefs would then go back to their closer – Johnson – to protect the lead. The Pro Bowl back pounded out three first down runs to set up Tynes’ third field goal of the evening to go ahead 16-10.

As they did for much of the game, the Chiefs defense slammed the door on Plummer and the Broncos, holding them to just 46 yards in the fourth quarter. Leading 16-10 with 7:54 remaining, Kansas City put the game on ice with a five-minute drive and another field goal from Tynes, to move ahead 19-10 with 2:42 left. The Broncos last-ditch efforts came up short as Plummer threw incompletions on third and fourth down in the waning moments.
