A letter from THE PRESIDENT/CEO & CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

DONA BOOEKCSL President & CEO

2

Dear Friends,Thank you for caring about our mission, to protect and promote the well-being of children. It was your support and confidence that helped us reach nearly 40,000 Kansas children and their families again in 2016. Enjoy reading our 2016 Annual Report that demonstrates the success you helped create that prevented child abuse, strengthened families and empowered parents and youth.

KCSL, as a statewide organization, affords me the opportunity to travel and visit communities across this great state of Kansas. That, in turn, allows me to listen to a wide genre of music on the radio. Recently, the lyrics of the great Louis Armstrong song "What a Wonderful World" reminded me of how our work each day with children and families reflects the simple beauty and harmony found in this song.

Every year, we ask those whose lives we have touched through our services to share their KCSL experiences.

The sincere expressions of gratitude and hope expressed in their remarks surpasses all the negative noise too often heard on the radio during my travels. However, the correlation between 'Satchmo’s' beautiful lyrics and the feedback from our families could not escape my attention:

I see them bloom for me and you..."KCSL has helped my child improve their grades and rebuild their lives." "Because of KCSL, my child now talks to me."

...bright, blessed day, the dark, sacred night..."Because of KCSL, I finally have faith that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel." "KCSL has helped us in serious situations and made sure our children were safe."

I see friends shaking hands...they’re really saying, I Love You..."KCSL helped me find my mom." "KCSL listened when my granddaughter needed to talk."

I hear babies cry, I watch them grow..."My baby loves the things she learns from KCSL." "KCSL taught me that my children need and thrive on positive praise throughout their lives."

Yes, I think to myself, What a Wonderful World!"KCSL has made my family strong again and restored our faith in the world." "KCSL has given my family everything we need for a wonderful life."

As we celebrate the lives changed for the better through our work in 2016, we can also aspire to make 2017 a wonderful world for those who turn to us for help. Our volunteers, donors and staff give us inspiration and wisdom to carry forward our 124-year-old mission with success. With so much experience and growth in our history, a changing world with changing views will only make us stronger and better. KCSL will be there well beyond 2017 to support children and their families who want to learn and grow to become a positive force in our Kansas communities.

A special acknowledgment and recognition is deserved for John Bridson, Westar Energy’s Senior Vice President of Generation and Marketing, who has served as KCSL’s Chairman of the Board since 2014 and will leave that leadership role in 2017. John has led KCSL with a passionate commitment to our mission that has created increased visibility of our work and strengthened our private donor base. He has brought new leaders to our Board and volunteer councils that help us daily reach more children and families. John’s leadership contributions create a Wonderful World at KCSL! We look forward to his continued service on our Board of Directors in a new capacity in 2017.

We celebrate each of you who contributed to KCSL in 2016 and thank you for your continued interest and support of our work in 2017!

With Appreciation,

Dona BooePresident/CEO

P.S. A PERSONAL NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Friends and Colleagues,It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as Chairman of the Board of KCSL. Leading an extraordinary group of volunteers, donors, and staff has been a positive experience for me. I am an adoptive parent and the mission and values of KCSL mirror my own. I have learned and grown through this experience at KCSL and watching families as they strengthen and grow has been a joy in my life. To all of you who support us, thank you and I hope your commitments will last well into the future as mine will.

Sincerely,

John BridsonChairman of the Board of Directors
