New volleyball facility announced with launch of largest capital campaign in KAI history
The largest gift in the history of Kansas Athletics has kicked off Raise The Chant, a transformational $350-million fundraising campaign, including a brand new volleyball facility. Friday evening in Lawrence, during a dinner at The Jayhawk Club with some of Kansas Athletics’ most generous benefactors, University of Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod and Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger shared their five-year, $350 million Athletics strategic vision. Kansas alumnus and benefactor David Booth attended the dinner and boldly kicked off
the campaign with a $50 million pledge, the largest in Kansas Athletics history. The Booth gift will launch far-reaching improvements to Memorial Stadium, Girod and Zenger said, beginning with the construction of an indoor football practice facility immediately following this season. Improvements to the south end zone and the west side of the stadium will follow after the completion of the 2018 season; enhancements to the north end zone and the stadium’s east side will commence at a time to be determined. Renovations will include a variety of premium seating options at all price points, enhanced fan amenities such as suites, lounges, reserved chairback seating, concourse viewing decks, expanded concourses and premium concession options. “In listening to Sheahon’s vision of many years,” Booth said, “and believing in where Coach Self’s program is and where Coach Beaty’s program is headed, I am proud to support my alma mater’s athletic program. I believe Sheahon’s plan for football and basketball is essential not
only to the future of Kansas Athletics, but also to the university as a whole.” “The Raise The Chant campaign, with its primary focus on football, addresses an institutional priority for the University of Kansas,” Chancellor Girod said. “A competitive football program benefits the entire university and is important for KU to continue being a strong member of the Big 12 Conference. In recent years, we have transformed the university with nearly $1 billion in new and renovated facilities, and this is the next step in that transformation. I have the utmost confidence in Sheahon and believe we have the right people at the right time for this campaign.” The comprehensive campaign comes on the heels of six years of unprecedented athletic facility growth in soccer, men’s and women’s track & field, softball, tennis, and men’s and women’s golf. This six-year period of expansion also includes the construction of the DeBruce Center – the home of the original rules of basketball – and McCarthy Hall, the impressive

new residence for the men’s basketball team and other exceptional students. The generosity did not end with Booth. Girod and Zenger announced that Stewart Horejsi, a long-time KU benefactor, has further enriched the campaign with his family’s $10-million pledge, which will enable Kansas Athletics to construct a new, 3,000-seat arena for the nationally ranked and defending Big 12 Conference Champion volleyball program. Construction on the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena will begin immediately following the 2017 season. “My family and I have been thrilled to watch all the success of KU volleyball as it outgrew the current Horejsi Family Athletic Center,” Horejsi said. “We loved the concept of the new arena, especially Sheahon’s vision of connecting a hospitality area to the existing one in Allen Fieldhouse. That will take fan enjoyment to a new level. We look
forward to watching great Big 12 and NCAA matches in the new Horejsi.” Girod and Zenger also announced other major gifts to the campaign from long-time, dedicated Jayhawks, including Dana and Sue Anderson, of Lawrence, and the Mike Beatty family, of Salina. They also said this campaign includes the renovation of Hoglund Ballpark, home of KU’s baseball program. The successful renegotiation and extension of KAI’s apparel rights agreement with current partner adidas was also shared with the group. One of the largest such contracts in college athletics, it will provide $191 million in sponsorship and apparel over the next 14 years. “This is a strategic partnership,” Zenger said, “a comprehensive, institutional approach unlike any apparel agreement in the country. It will not only help us achieve our goals of renovating Memorial Stadium and Allen Fieldhouse, but it will also reflect adidas and Kansas Athletics’ commitment to academics and community involvement. “We want to extend a heartfelt thanks to our generous donors,” Zenger continued,
“in particular David Booth, and Stewart Horejsi and his family. They, once again, have not only bought in to our vision of what Kansas Athletics can be, but also have actively participated in that vision. We appreciate very much the leadership they have shown, and we are confident that others will follow their lead and help make that vision a reality. I’d also like to express our appreciation to Dale Seuferling and the KU Endowment Association for its leadership as we embark on this important campaign.” TO DONATE: Visit RaiseTheChant.com, or call the Williams Education Fund at 785-864-3946.

KANSAS-TCU MATCHUPKansas and TCU meet for the 12th time on Saturday. The Jayhawks lead the all-time series, 9-2, including four-straight wins overall and five-straight wins against the Horned Frogs in Lawrence. The series dates back to a five-set loss during nonconference play 1999, but since TCU joined the Big 12 in 2012, KU has a 9-1 series advantage.
Led by third-year head coach Jill Kramer, TCU enters Saturday with a 8-5 record and 0-2 record during Big 12 play. TCU has three all-time appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two have come under Kramer’s direction in 2015 and 2016.
TCU ranks third in the league in aces per set (1.22). Junior outside hitter Ashleigh Martin leads the Horned Frogs’ offense with 3.20 kills per set, while freshman libero Dani Dennison backbones TCU’s defense with the third-most digs per set (4.91) in the Big 12.
LIVE COVERAGESaturday’s match will be televised on FOX Sports Network with Brenda VanLengen (play-by-play) and former KU libero Jill Dorsey-Hall (analyst) calling the action.
Live audio of the match will be available on KUAthletics.com/radio or KU’s student radio station, KJHK-FM 90.7, with Nick Lewis calling play-by-play.
BIG 12 WINNING STREAK Kansas has won the last 16 matches against Big 12 opponents entering Saturday’s contest with TCU. It is the longest conference winning streak in program history for the Jayhawks. Additionally, Kansas is 21-1 in the last 22 Big 12 contests.
It has been over a full calendar year since KU last lost a Big 12 match -- Sept. 24, 2016 at then-No. 5 Texas.
Through the years, Kansas has steadily gained success in conference play. In 2003, KU’s first-ever conference winning streak of four matches or longer was started with victories over then-No. 25 Missouri and a road win at Texas. The next season in 2004, KU rattled off four-in-a-row during a stretch that included two wins over a top-15 Texas A&M squad.
From 2011 to 2013, KU pieced together a pair of Big 12 winning streaks that lasted six and seven matches, respectively.
KU’s previous record for the longest Big 12 winning streak was nine matches from the end of the 2014 season to the beginning of league play in 2015.
All eight of KU’s Big 12 winning streaks of four matches or longer have ended with losses to top-25 teams.

REGULAR-SEASON NONCONFERENCE SUCCESSKansas ended pre-conference play having won 35 of the last 37 matches against nonconference opponents during the regular season. That stretch includes winning 10 of the last 12 nonconference tournament titles and a 25-match winning streak. KU’s 25-match regular-season nonconference winning streak lasted from a win over North Texas on Sept. 19, 2014, to a loss at No. 14 Purdue on Sept. 16, 2016.
The Jayhawks have gone undefeated through the nonconference portion of the regular season four times under head coach Ray Bechard (2000, 2002, 2004 and 2015) and are 191-32 (.857) against nonconference teams during the regular season since his arrival.

Rigdon earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors after becoming the 16th Jayhawk to reach 1,000 career kills and given Kansas Invitational All-Tournament Team honors after helping lead the
Jayhawks to a pair of top-20 wins during week three of the season.
Payne was named MVP of the Wolverine Invitational, averaging 4.80 kills per set on a .389 hitting percentage as Kansas worked its way to a 6-0 start for the third-straight season.
Havili was named the first Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week of the 2017 season after leading the Jayhawks to the Wolfpack Invitational title with a 3-0 record while averaging 12.31 assists per set and 4.15 digs per set. The Fort Worth, Texas, native was named MVP of the season-opening event after posting three-straight double-doubles.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF WOMEN’S SPORTS AT KUAll-Americans Kelsie Payne, Ainise Havili and Madison Rigdon are current-ly carving their legacies in Kansas volleyball history, but with the 2017-18 academic year set to begin it is a great reminder of those who pioneered and paved the way for future female student-athletes to don the Crimson and Blue. The opportunity for women to compete for the University of Kansas was solid-ified in 1968. This school year, then, marks the 50th season of intercollegiate women’s athletics at KU, and the Department of Athletics will take the year to celebrate this milestone. During the pregame warmup, KU will sport a com-memorative T-shirt to honor the 50-year evolution of women’s sports in the athletics department. These commemorative T-shirts will be worn throughout the year by all female Jayhawk student-athletes prior to each competition.
