Kangaroo Island is the third largest Island to the Mainland after Tasmania and Melville Island. Separated from the Mainland by the Backstairs Passage, the Island does not have foxes or rabbits, but a wonderful range of wildlife including: Sea Lions on the South Coast, Fur Seals at the Western End and Pelicans at Kingscote..

This unique island is also the site of the first ever settlement in South Australia. Kangaroo Island has a population of approximately 4,500 with the main town being Kingscote. Our accommodation for three nights is at the 1834 Ozone Hotel in Kingscote.

We also enjoy a wonderful cruise in the Coorong National Park and tour the Fleurieu Peninsula.

DAY 1: Wednesday 7th February 2018

MELBOURNE - MT GAMBIER

With pick up from home this morning, we transfer to O’Shannessy’s Coach and travel via the Westgate Bridge to Geelong for our morning tea break from the coach. From Geelong we drive to Warrnambool, a beautiful seaside city on the shores of Lady Bay. More than 100 ships and boats were wrecked within 80 kilometres from

Warrnambool, hence the current name for the area - The Shipwreck

Coast. Following a late lunch, we continue our journey west to Heywood, Dartmoor and across the border to Mt. Gambier. We take a short tour of this South Australian town, of particular interest are the craters of extinct volcanoes, including the famous “Blue Lakes”, the source of Mount Gambier’s water supply. The volume of this fresh water lake neither diminishes nor gains and its water source is still unknown. We also visit the beautifully landscaped Umpherston Cave. We then head to our accommodation and have time to freshen up before dinner.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn Presidential, MOUNT GAMBIER

DAY 2: Thursday 8th February, 2018

SPIRIT OF THE COORONG CRUISE - FLEURIEU PENINSULA

Following a hearty breakfast this morning we travel along the Coorong, glimpsing the Younghusband Peninsula enroute. At Meningie we board the “Spirit of the Coorong” for an informative and relaxing luncheon cruise. Our cruise takes us across the Coorong National Park to Goolwa on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Our coach will be waiting for us in Goolwa for

DAY 3: Friday 9th February, 2018

KANGAROO ISLAND ENTERPRISES

This morning, we take the scenic drive to Cape Jervis where we board the Sea Link ferry across Backstairs Passage to Penneshaw. Back on the coach we begin our days sightseeing. Today we will be introduced to some unique Kangaroo Island ventures - the first one is Clifford’s Honey Farm for a honey ice cream and to learn about the unique Ligurian Bee. Following our visit here we head into the centre of the island. This is where the Andermel Marron Farm is located. After a

delicious lunch, we will be introduced to the marron at close quarters in aquaria or holding tanks so we can fully appreciate the physical characteristics of this wonderful freshwater crayfish. Also on the farm are a native food orchard and vineyards, so there is a chance to taste Two Wheeler Creek Wines from the vineyard and for the creative cooks the farm

produces several native food plants used as condiments such as lemon myrtle and mountain pepper. Our final stop this afternoon is to South Australia’s first Sheep Milking Dairy and Cheese Factory Island Pure. Depending on the farm schedule we may see the sheep milking under way (a sight you’ll never forget!) and a detailed video presentation will explain the operations, followed by an opportunity to sample some island cheese and yoghurt. We then head to Kingscote, the island’s main town, where we check into our next three nights accommodation.

OVERNIGHT: 1834 Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE

DAY 4: Saturday 10th February, 2018

KANGAROO ISLAND - NATURAL WONDERS OF THE SOUTH COAST

Today is a naturalist’s treat! We spend our day along the South Coast beginning with a visit to the world famous Seal Bay for a chance to walk along the beach amongst the colony of Australian Sea Lions who live here all year round. It is an unforgettable experience to be guided by a National Parks

Ranger, along the beach, within metres of the bulls, cows and seal pups as they rest on the beach. We then drive to Rocky River where we have plenty of time to spend in the Visitors Centre

before our picnic lunch. This afternoon we continue our touring in the Flinders Chase National Park. Our sightseeing includes the Remarkable Rocks, Cape du Couedic and Admirals Arch where, via a spectacular board walk, we can see close up a colony of New Zealand Fur Seals who live in the sea and the rocks just below us. After a fascinating day, we return to the hotel via a different route and have time to freshen up for dinner.

DAY 5: Sunday 11th February, 2018

MORE KANGAROO ISLAND

We have a more leisurely start to the day and for anyone wishing to stretch their legs, there is a pleasant walk along the waters edge right outside our hotel. First stop this morning is the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery where we take a very interesting tour of the plant and

equipment involved in producing eucalyptus oil and product. Next we make our way to beautiful Emu Bay. At the Lavender Farm, we enjoy an informative

talk and lunch. Back in Kingscote, we have some free time to explore the town and perhaps purchase a souvenir of our holiday! Later this afternoon, there’s time to view the Pelican Feeding before we enjoy dinner*.

*Pelican feeding is located diagonally across the road from the hotel on the beach (donation).

OVERNIGHT: 1834 Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE

DAY 6: Monday 12th February, 2018

VICTOR HARBOR

This morning we say farewell to Kangaroo Island and board the ferry at Penneshaw for our return journey to the mainland. Back on board the coach, we retrace our steps back to Victor Harbor. After lunch, we take the horse drawn tram across to Granite Island. We have some free time to explore “Victor”, as the locals know it. Perhaps take the opportunity to visit the SA

Page 9: Kangaroo Island and the Coorong - O'Shannessy's Quality Tours€¦ · Kangaroo Island is the third largest Island to the Mainland after Tasmania and Melville Island. Separated from

Whale Centre (own expense). Victor Harbor was originally a whaling centre with three whaling stations in the mid - 1900s. An estimated 400 Southern Right Whales arrived into Encounter Bay each season. Unfortunately these magnificent mammals were destroyed back then but they have returned to the bay in increasing numbers. Later this afternoon, we check into our accommodation with time to settle in before dinner.

OVERNIGHT: McCracken Country Club, VICTOR HARBOR

DAY 7: Tuesday 13th February, 2018

VICTOR HARBOR - GRAMPIANS

We have the chance for a sleep in this morning before beginning our journey back to Victoria. We travel to the “Heritage Town” of Strathalbyn. The railway reached Strathalbyn in 1884 and copper was smeltered in the district until 1914. Today the quaint town is popular for its architecture and pleasant atmosphere. At Tailem Bend we join the Dukes Highway through Tintinara to Keith where we enjoy our lunch. This afternoon, we make our way through

Horsham to Stawell for our final night on tour.

OVERNIGHT: Magadala Motor Lodge, STAWELL

DAY 8: Wednesday 14th February, 2018

GRAMPIANS - MELBOURNE

We have another great day planned beginning with a scenic drive through the Grampians National Park. We enjoy spectacular views from Boroka Lookout before arriving in Halls Gap. This afternoon, we rejoin the highway and travel via Ballarat to Melbourne. We return home with fond
