JULY 2017 Vol. 13 No: 7 KANATA SENIORS COUNCIL Far West Fun Fest is over for another year. I would like to thank our sponsors for their support in providing the activities that we all en- joyed. In particular I would like to thank Meridian for sponsoring our opening breakfast and The Courtyards on Eagleson for sponsor- ing the buses and lunch for our Tulip Trip. I d also like to thank those who stretched the number they would accommodate or hosted a second session to cover as many participants as possible. We started our opening breakfast in a unique way with Liz accepting the games torch from the video of Kay on the beach in New Zealand. We held several new activities - cross stitch, wine and oil painting, the Brain Cafe, coaster crafts and paper flower making as well as many of the usual favorites. In view of all the recent rain we were lucky with all our outdoor activities which were blessed with good weather. Thanks to all for completing our questionnaire . We do pay attention to your comments and suggestions although we have not been able to host a whisky tasting afternoon as suggested several times in the past. I noticed that many people would like a line dancing lesson prior to our entertainment. Im sure this is because of the great group of dancers that we had at our closing luncheon. We will see what we can do. Watch out for next year! Liz Tucker P.S. If you still have your Far West Fun Fest name badge please hand it in at the front desk. COUNCIL CAFÉ

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

2016-2017

We have had another good year in the Café. With a strong and motivat-

ed team of volunteers, including cooks, sandwich makers, sous chefs,

general helpers, dishwashers, our muffin/cookie maker, laundress, and

our shopper, we have served many fantastic meals to customers. From

time to time we must slightly raise our prices due to the increasing cost

of food, and our patrons have accepted these changes with much appre-

ciated understanding.

Due to the generosity of some of our patrons, we were able to purchase

a much needed fridge and freezer this year.

As part of our commitment to health and safety, a review of food han-

dling procedures was undertaken with all kitchen volunteers in October

2016 at our annual Café meeting. We continue to provide the Food

Handling Training Program to all new volunteers throughout the year,

and plan for an annual review of these important standards.

While we had some ‘retirements’ from our kitchen staff this year, we

have also has many new volunteers apply within the past few months

seven new staff were trained in May, with another training session

scheduled for June.

While the summer months have been challenging to staff over the past few years, with the influx of new volunteers, we are anticipating sufficient coverage with our regular adult staff. Several years ago we had more interest from students wishing to help out in the Café, but the reality seems to be that we cannot assume coverage by students over the sum-mer months and must rely on our permanent volunteers. We are hoping however, to have perhaps one or two students who may come to work

with us this summer.

Meanwhile from everyone in the Café Crew we wish you all a happy, sunny summer ...and please keep on coming back!

The Kanata Seniors Craft Group has had a very

gratifying year culminating with several suc-

cessful craft sales. Our major one is in the Ha-

zeldean Mall in November but we also had

sales at the Kanata Seniors Centre on at least 3

occasions .THANK YOU to all who support

our group.

We’ve donated money and articles to several

organizations. We presented a check to support

the Kanata Canada 150 event held in May and

have knitted many, little toques for the new-

borns’ at our local hospital. During the winter,

we donated hats, mitts and scarves to several

community associations to be distributed to

those in need.

We are a dedicated group that meets every

Tuesday afternoon from 1 pm to 3 pm and the

welcome mat is out for all newcomers. We

mostly knit and crochet, along with a couple of

quilters, but we’re always open to a new craft.

Our supplies are mostly donated, and our prof-

its are used to support the Kanata Seniors Cen-

tre, and the local community.

Believe it or not, by the time this issue is printed, summer

will “officially” be over. That’s not to say that we can’t look

forward to sunny days (we hope) ahead but the days will be

drawing in, minute by minute.

For us at the Council, the 2016/2017 season has come to an

end and we look ahead to the new one when, we hope, our

Board will be strengthened by the energy and ideas of new

directors whom we hope will be joining us in September.

Meantime it’s time to say aurevoir to one or two familiar

faces.

Our Council Board will be poorer by the loss of two mem-

bers: Sue Dotzenroth who brought her considerable organi-

zational skills which are matched by her culinary talents to

our Council Café.

Second Terry McPartlin who was an active member on the

Board, helping out wherever help was needed but who has

decided to resign her Directorship. She will, however, be

staying on as an active member of the Travel Team

Thirdly, Carol Diguer – the familiar presence at WCORC’s

Wednesday Diner’s Club has received a promotion. We wish

her the very best of the best with the hope that she may still

drop by as a friend and fellow line dancer!

At the Council, it is with deep regret I find that I have no op-

tion but to step down from my position as President since,

for a year, I am part of a medical program that I hope will

rejuvenate my arteries (apparently they’re older than I am

which is not a good thing). However, I will be staying on as a

member of the Board, the Travel Team, the compiler of this

Newsletter and the expert melon-slicer for the FAR WEST

FUN FEST breakfast.

Lastly, speaking for the Council, I wish to extend a heartfelt

“THANK YOU” to the KANATA KOURIER STANDARD which

has supported the Centre and the Council through the years.

Never more was their help appreciated than this year when,

for many reasons, we needed to strengthen our volunteer

numbers. The Kanata Kourier proved that far from being an

advertising medium it is committed to strengthening and

building the community it serves. Again, THANK YOU.

Remember: we’ll be back in September …. enjoy the summer

and HAPPY 150TH CANADA.
