A Little Joke...

Q: What season is it when you are on a trampoline?

A: Spring-time!

How Do I Check for Lice?

1. Apply ample hair conditioner to dry hair, enough to soak from the scalp to the

end of the strands.

2. Remove tangles with a regular comb.

3. Start behind the ears and comb the hair section by section. Separating the hair

with hair clips is helpful.

4. Place the lice comb against the scalp and pull to the end of the hair.

5. Check the comb for lice after each pull.

6. Wipe the comb with a tissue each time and look for lice.

7. Place the tissue in a bag.

8. Check all the hair over the entire head.

9. Repeat combing for every part of the head at least 5 times.

10. Once finished, tie the bag with soiled tissues and throw it in the garbage.

11. If lice are detected and treatment is required, make sure that all conditioner is

washed from the hair prior to treatment.

What is the Treatment for Head Lice?

Overtreatment and misdiagnosis are common.

Do not treat anyone with a head lice product unless you find live lice in their hair.

The presence of nits indicates a past infestation that may not be active.

Check everyone in the home for head lice.

There are a number of very effective treatments for head lice. Most contain an

insecticide that kills the lice such as pyrethin (R&C shampoo), permethrin (Nix or

Kwellada-) and lindane (PMS-Lindane shampoo).

Non-insecticidal treatments called isopropyl myristate/cyclomethicone (Resultz)

have been approved in Canada for individuals 4 years and older.

All of the above products require a second application 7 to 10 days after the first

treatment.

iPads and Tablets

It seems impossible to escape technology nowadays! Try the following strategies to help your child when they seem “glued” to a tablet:

Sit side by side, and comment about what you see on the screen, or what your child is doing

Partake in game apps that are played against another person (e.g., Hungry Hungry Hippos, Connect 4, Futaba, What’s in the Bag?)

Invest in games that make your child get up and move. Sneak is an app that involves hiding away from the iPad, and then sneaking up to “capture” a friendly monster. It is impossible to play sitting down!

Interject occasionally to ask questions, or ask your child to show you how to use an app they are familiar with.

Mr. James Chartrand—Aboriginal Support Worker

and

Miss Makenize Mydonick-Educational Assistant

As you start to pack away winter outerwear please keep in

mind that Victoria School would greatly appreciate any

donations of jackets, ski pants, mitts and toques your children

will no longer need.

This month has been very busy in 1B. Our month has been filled with special visitors and special events. We are excited to tell you about a few of them.

Early in the month we had Mr. Chartrand join our class. He shared some traditional teachings with us. He showed us many animal furs and he even turned our teacher into ‘Mother Earth’ during a ceremonial dance!

Also this month, 1B was joined by, Miss Psutka and Miss Zeek, our Speech-Language Pathologists, whom taught our class the Expanding Expression Tool. This tool helps students provide detailed descriptions to things. The descriptions would include the following elements: the category the item belongs to, the function of the item, the appearance, what the item is made of, the parts of the item and its location. We sure had fun boosting our oral and written language expression. Thanks again for joining us!

Shantel Cote, a first year student teacher from the First Nations University of Canada joined us this month. She taught us about a traditional First Nation headdress. We really enjoyed her lesson! Thanks Ms. Cote and good luck in your program!

We have been practicing our reading strategies. Our newest strategy that we would like to tell you about is ‘Flippy the Dolphin’. “Flippy the Dolphin’ reminds us to flip the vowel sound and try both the short and the long vowel sound when we are trying to decode a word. Please stop by anytime if you would like to learn more about our reading strategies. There’s ‘Chunky Monkey’, ‘Skippy the Frog’, ‘Eagle Eye’ and many more!

At this time we would like to take this opportunity to send out a huge thank-you to our special volunteer readers – Colleen and Maureen. These special ladies listen to use read, help us with our reading strategies and give us endless hugs! We appreciate the time and energy you have given to us and we can’t thank you enough!

Hello from 2C!

It is hard to believe that we are in March, the month is flying by so quickly and soon we will be on Easter Break.

April will be an exciting month!

In language arts we have begun our ‘Author Study’. The grade 2’s have been focusing on different Dr. Seuss books. They have been working on retelling a story by focusing in on the characters, events, setting, problem, and solution. The grade 2’s will also apply what they learned here and write their own stories. Once we complete our ‘Author Study’ our next unit that we will focus on will be ‘Fairy Tales and Folktales’.

Along with 12 other schools, we have been working on ‘The Christmas Wind Project’. Each week, for eight weeks,

Canadian author Stephanie McLellan sends us a new audio part of her new book ‘The Christmas Wind’. Each story

part is 1-2 minutes in length. The project is to have the students listen to the words of the story over 8 weeks and

then draw what they visualize, without the influence of the ultimate illustrations. The grade 2’s have grown close

with the characters in the story (Mr. Murdock, Jo, Mary, and baby Christopher). We cannot wait for the actual copy

of ‘The Christmas Wind’ in the Fall.

In math the grade 2’s have been working hard solving problems involving ‘Addition and Subtraction’ of 1 - 2 digit

numbers. Students have also been creating their own ‘Addition and Subtraction Number Sentences’. One math

activity that is a huge hit in our classroom is the ‘Egg Carton Count’. The next unit that we will focus on in math is

‘Shape and Space’.

Wishing Everyone a Happy Easter!
