FALL 2013 3Kamloops This Week
Buying a vehicle, whether new or used, represents a huge expense for most people.
That’s why it is crucial to be well-informed before signing a purchase contract.
Here are a few tips to help you save time and money.
Get all the factsFirst, before you even start
shopping around, determine your needs and the type of vehicle you prefer.
Set a maximum budget and find out the selling prices of vehicles that interest you.
After narrowing down your choices, get as much information as possible about the vehicles in question.
If you’re thinking about pur-chasing a used vehicle, a visit to the Tran sport Canada website can be very useful for finding out about any current recalls applicable to the models that interest you.
Other sites that publish con-sumer reviews about the reliability
of makes and models can help you steer away from lemons and sniff out money-saving deals.
If you’re interested in a new car, be sure to read up on road tests carried out by different car review-ers.
The opinions of these experts will help you confirm or discard your choices.
Road tests and inspectionsThe next step is the road test,
for both new and used cars. This is one of the most impor-
tant steps, as a particular vehicle doesn’t neces sarily suit every driver.
Don’t hesitate to ask for a longer road test than the one that is suggested to you — after all, you’re the customer.
In the case of a used vehicle, it is always best to have a road test and a mechanical inspection.
Most car dealerships will agree to let you have the car inspected by an independent mechanic you trust.
NegotiateLastly, prepare to negotiate. Whether you are looking for a
new or used vehicle, keep in mind that the car dealer has fixed his or her price to include a margin of profit, which is totally normal.
This leaves you some room to negotiate.
Be on the lookout for any deals that are being offered by manufac-turers.
Also, month- and year-ends are a good time to buy.
Car dealers often have monthly objectives to meet and therefore will be able to offer rebates to clear the lot for the arrival of next year’s models.
For a used vehicle, compare the prices of other similar models.
Once you have come to a deci-sion, make an offer in order to get the best price possible.
Don’t be in a rush to buy — remember that this will be an important investment for you, so make sure you think things through.
BEFORE YOU STEP ON THE LOT Heed this advice to help make car-buying pain-free

On the whole, GMC does not like being referred to as a truck brand, since the manufac-turer does not build medi-um- or heavy-duty trucks anymore.
Nevertheless, in addi-tion to making pickups of all sizes, the company offers quite a few interest-ing SUVs and CUVs that might not qualify as trucks but seem to fit well within the segment.
Your local GMC dealer can show you some of the nice models the company is putting out these days.
The smallest GMC available remains the tough looking Terrain, a compact vehicle capable of seating five people.
It is offered with front- or all-wheel drive and either a four-cylinder engine or the newer 3.6-litre V-6, both with a six-speed automatic transmis-sion.
GMC dealers also have the smooth-looking Acadia on offer, a real CUV with front- or all-wheel drive and a new V-6 engine.
The Denali is the luxu-ry version.
The same trim can be found in the most impres-sive Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs.
By the way, this full-sized truck is also avail-able with a hybrid-electric configuration.
GMC pickups come in many sizes and capacities.
A totally new genera-tion of GMCs is reportedly coming our way, although despite some improve-ments for 2013, the heavy-duty versions will remain largely the same.
We can also expect a newer version of the com-pact Canyon to appear in the following months.

Japanese automaker Nissan is livelier than ever — and a quick look at what it has to offer will prove it.
Starting with the small car segment, we can see how active Nissan is with its several original cars, such as the recently rede-signed Versa sedan or hatchback, the all-new Sentra, the all-new hatchback Note, the unique-look-ing Juke (available with front- or all-wheel drive and standard tur-bocharged engine) and the one-of-a-kind Cube mini-wagon.
And, of course, there is the spectacular Leaf all-electric car.
If you are looking for a big-ger car, you can always ask your Nissan dealer to show you the luxurious Maxima or the rede-signed Altima sedan.
Note that the Altima is still available as a coupe in the older design.
If you need to ferry around people, Nissan’s van, the Quest, could be the perfect solution.
Nissan also offers two excit-ing sports cars — the 370Z coupe or convertible or the high-performance GT-R.
In the CUV and SUV catego-ry, you might want to consider the smaller Rogue or its bigger brother, the Murano.
Nissan recently redesigned the Pathfinder to make it look more like a modern CUV.
The more traditional Xterra remains a rugged all-terrain SUV and the much bigger and impres-sive Armada is still featured in the Nissan catalogue.
The company’s smaller pick-up is the Frontier, while the big-ger model is the Titan.
Nissan now offers delivery vans — the smaller NV200 and the bigger NV Cargo, which is now available as a passenger van.
Nissan is also the manufac-turer of the Infiniti brand of luxury vehicles, whose models are expected to undergo a name change soon.
For now, they are known as the G37 sedan (coupe or convert-
ible), the M37-56 full-sized car (also available with hybrid tech-
nology), the FX37-50, the all-new JX35, and the bigger QX56.

Recently, legendary lux-ury brand Cadillac began a transformation of its line of vehicles.
This was a necessary step in keeping up with the stiff competition from popular international brands such as BMW.
To this end, Cadillac designers came up with a small sedan called the ATS, which was developed to com-pete with BMW’s legendary 3 Series.
The ATS might soon be available in other configu-rations, including a coupe design.
The base engine is a nor-mally aspirated four-cylinder engine, although the car can be had with a V-6 and auto-matic transmission or with a turbo four featuring an auto-matic or manual transmis-sion.
It also comes with rear- or all-wheel drive.
The CTS used to be mar-keted as a compact car, but that is no longer the case.
It will soon be available as an all-new mid-sized vehicle that will compete with the BMW 5 Series.
Cadillac offers the V-6 powered XTS, a bigger sedan with front-wheel drive that will soon be available with a turbocharged version of that same engine.
We can also soon expect to see the unique sporty Caddy, the hybrid ELR coupe.
Cadillac dealers have a variety of SUVs on their lots, including the already very popular SRX compact wagon and all three full-sized Escalade models.
Be on the lookout for a newer version of the Escalade to be unveiled this year.
THEY’RE THE CADILLAC OF CARS Caddy has bolstered its lineup to keep up
The all-new and smaller ATS is the beginning of a new Cadillac lineup.

Chevrolet is a very popular brand in North America and is bound to become even more so, thanks to some of the newest addi-tions to its lineup.
These include some smaller cars, such as the tiny Spark city car, the Sonic sub-compact and the Trax, a miniature CUV.
People looking for more “regular” cars will be interested in the compact Cruze — one of the top-selling cars in the world — as well as the revolution-ary Volt electric car, the all-new Malibu mid-sized sedan and the completely redesigned Impala.
By the way, Chevrolet still produces some of the most interesting sports cars on the market, such as the Camaro coupe or convertible and the all-new and re-engineered 2014 Corvette.
Chevrolet has also remained very active in the truck segment.
It sells some of the most popular CUVs and SUVs, starting with the diminutive above-mentioned Trax and continuing with the popular Equinox, the restyled Traverse and the mighty Tahoe and Suburban.
Chevrolet popularity also extends to pickup trucks such as the mighty Silverado, whose refined design will appear later in the year.
This model is also offered as a real work truck under the HD moniker.
The mid-sized Colorado is bound to make an important comeback as a totally restyled vehicle — and note this is the last year for the unique Avalanche SUV, which transforms into a pickup.
Last, but not least, Chevrolet is bringing back its legendary Express delivery van, which is also avail-able as a people mover.
Chevrolet is expanding fast
The small Spark is designed for young people and city drivers.

At any mention of German cars, the name Volkswagen is usually quick to come to a car buyer’s mind.
It’s no wonder, as the brand was among the first reasonably priced foreign cars to hit our shores in the early 1950s.
Volkswagen still has a selection of affordable
cars and light trucks on offer, starting with the well-known Golf, a com-pact car now available as a station wagon, a sport GTI or a racy all-wheel-drive R.
The Beetle is a retro-looking version of the Golf, while the Jetta can be had as a station wagon or as a bigger sedan with a trunk.
Volkswagen also has a unique coupe-convertible car, the Eos, which is powered by a turbo-charged four-cylinder engine.
And, in recent years, Volkswagen has been producing an American car, the Passat, built in Tennessee.
Like the cars men-tioned above, the Passat
can be delivered with a five-cylinder, V-6 or tur-bodiesel engine.
In light trucks, Volkswagen has a great minivan, the Routan, which is made in Canada.
Available in seven model trims, the Routan is a front-wheel drive powered by an impres-sive V-6 engine.
There are two light SUVs in the Volkswagen family as well — the popular Tiguan, a com-
pact truck powered by a peppy turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and the mightier Touareg, a big SUV available with
a V-6 engine, a turbo-charged diesel V-6 or with a powerful super-charged V-6 combined with an electric motor.
A WAGEN FOR THE PEOPLE The German automaker has plenty to offer buyers
The Volkswagen Golf R is a sporty version of the stalwart hatchback.

FALL 2013 11Kamloops This Week
Many people who own beautiful cars, performance automobiles or even high-end light trucks would pre-fer to use a less expensive vehicle during the cold season.
That way, they can avoid damaging their prize possessions in ice-caused accidents or subjecting them to salted roads.
For these people, now is the time to go looking for a used vehicle that will be their daily drive in winter.
Sometimes people use a “winter beater,” which is a heavily used car or light truck that they won’t both-er investing maintenance money into.
This might not be the ideal solution for the aver-age driver who still wants some reliability in the winter.
After all, beaters can be safety hazards, too.
The best solution for most people is a slightly
used car that is reliable, safe and can do the job of managing winter roads.
The best formula would be to choose a used all-wheel drive and have it equipped with some of the best winter tires money can buy.
Obviously, that means a little bit more money but, unless the buyer chooses to keep the vehicle for a few years, it can bring back a sufficient amount of money if it is sold back in spring.
Alternately, a reason-ably priced front-wheel-drive mid-sized sedan can be bought at an even better price and still return a good amount of money when sold later in the year.
Is a front-wheel drive as good as an all-wheel drive in winter?
It all depends on the way the car is driven.
But, as in all cases, great winter tires will sure help.
CHOOSING A CAR FOR WINTER So-called beaters can prove to be more costly
According to some recent U.S. studies, obese drivers are more likely to die in a road accident than drivers of average weight.
At least this would appear to be the conclusion of researchers who assembled data from the U.S. Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which documented about 57,000 fatal crashes that occurred between 1996 and 2008.
According to the World Health Orga ni zation’s body-weight classification, which categorizes obesity according to three levels (I, II, III), the researchers’ analysis demon-strates the risk of dying increases according to the driver’s level of obesity.
For example, compared to drivers of average weight, obese drivers with a level I classification have a 21 per cent greater chance of dying if they are victims of a road accident.
At level II, the risk increases to 51 per cent and at level III it climbs to 80 per cent. It should also be noted that this study demonstrates that underweight drivers are also more likely to die in a crash than drivers of average weight, with an increased risk of 19 per cent.
In short, the study’s conclusions assume that over-weight drivers are more susceptible to the kinds of health problems that can lead to a higher risk of bodily injury and a longer recuperation period as the result of an acci-dent.
Another explanation is that seat-belts can sometimes malfunction when worn by overweight people.
In fact, crash simulations have shown that seat-belts were less effective in restraining obese bodies at the abdo-men level.
Is obesity a risk factor behind the wheel?
It’s almost time to start thinking about driving in
conditions like these again.

FALL 2013 13Kamloops This Week
As electronics become more and more sophisticated, car manufacturers are integrat-ing some of these advanced systems into their vehicles in order to help the driver with everyday driving.
Some of those systems are integrated into onboard enter-tainment systems — but the most interesting ones are used in advanced safety devices.
Among them are systems that help the driver keep con-trol of the vehicle in just about any condition, including snowy roads, rain and even, now, side winds affecting larger vehicles like big SUVs.
Coming soon, as a standard device on most cars and light trucks, will be back-up cameras that are currently only offered as an option on many vehicles.
But, that is not all. Buyers of high-end cars and
trucks are purchasing radars and cameras that reproduce a
360-degree overhead view of the vehicle and its surroundings on the screen of its navigation system when backing up.
Together with warning sounds to alert drivers who are close to hitting an object, such systems help any driver to back up more safely.
Other radars and detecting systems assist drivers in avoid-ing an impact or, if an impact has already occurred, they can control all the safety devices, such as airbags, in order to protect the occupants of the vehicle.
At this very moment, some manufacturers are working on systems that can even help a vehicle take a turn on coun-try roads and highways if the driver is not reacting properly or fast enough.
At this rate, it might not be long before cars and light trucks can drive by them-selves.
SPACE CARS FOR EVERYONE Technology is playing a bigger part in today’s vehicles
Some new vehicles are equipped with radars and cameras that help drivers park more easily.

A recreational vehicle is a home on wheels. It is some-thing you drive or tow that allows you to bring along all the comforts of home, includ-ing all your gear, no matter where the road takes you.
RVs range from basic to the incredibly opulent. For the most part, they all offer cook-ing, bathroom, sleeping and living areas and come equipped with gas, electricity, lights, heating and cooling systems.
No matter what the ameni-ties, an RV will allow you to get away more often and in greater comfort and style than ever before.
So, what is RVing? We’ll let you in on a little
secret: RVing is about tak-ing control of your vacations and weekends in a whole new world of freedom and relax-ation. Go where you want, when you want, Turn every

WHAT EXACTLY IS AN RV? The short answer? Something that makes vacations awesome
FALL 2013 17Kamloops This Week
The reasons you go RVing are the same reasons you take any vacation.
To get a break from the daily routine.
To be with family and friends.
To rest. To relax. To see new places. To try new things. But, the difference between
RVing and other types of vaca-tions is that RVing allows you to truly achieve all those goals — and more.
RV owners surveyed by Harris Interactive cited escap-ing the routine of the everyday world, enjoying nature and rest-ing, and relaxing and recharg-ing their batteries as the main reasons for taking RV trips.
Hassle-Free TravelWith RVing, there are no
flights to catch.
No security hassles. No long lines or lost lug-
gage. No hauling heavy bags in or
out of costly hotel rooms. No expensive, unhealthy
food. No strange bedrooms, bath-
rooms or kitchens.
It’s Fun — and affordableOwning an RV makes eco-
nomic sense. You are able to travel while
spending significantly less. You have unlimited flexibil-
ity, even on a limited budget. Depending on the type of RV
they own, a family of four can save up to 59 per cent on vaca-tion costs over other forms of travel, and a couple can save up to 47 per cent.
And that’s after factoring in RV ownership costs, including payments, insurance, mainte-nance, tires, tax breaks, registra-
tion and depreciation.
No Pet Left Behind Unlike most family vacations
where the four-legged members get left behind, RVers can take
everyone with them for a true family vacation, while saving pets and owners from boarding stress and expense.
It’s estimated that 48 per cent of the United States’ eight mil-
lion RV owners travel with their pets, with dogs topping the list.
Family pets are widely wel-comed at campgrounds, but confirm prior to check-in to see if any specific rules exist.
WHY SHOULD YOU GO RVING? Glad you asked! There are so many reasons

Being green is only natural for RV travellers.
A recent survey showed more than two-thirds of RVers minimize water use on trips, almost half recy-cle more on RV vacations than on other types and nearly half turn off home utilities before they hit the road.
In addition, 94 per cent of all RVers travel with two to seven people, mean-ing the vehicles get more people miles per gallon.
Did you know 80 per cent of RVs sold in the United States are actually non-motorized?
And 30 per cent of RV owners have a diesel tow vehicle or motorhome, promoting greater fuel effi-ciency.
New ideas and technolo-gies are being employed by the RV industry to create
a growing market of prod-ucts that are more efficient.
Lighter: New materials and eco-friendly space-age composites are making a difference in fuel effi-ciency.
Smaller: While there will always be big boys out there, manufacturers are starting to produce more small units with many desirable on-board ameni-ties.
Hybrids: Chassis manufacturers have devel-oped diesel/electric hybrid engines, boasting improved fuel-efficiency of 40 per cent over comparably sized gas motorhomes.
Aerodynamic: Manufacturers are mak-ing sleeker front ends to address wind resistance.
Eco-Friendly Components: RV manu-facturers are making
increased use of green textiles, power-saving LED light fixtures and eco-friendly sealants and components.
Get creativeIt’s not just RV manu-
facturers that are going green, but RVers as well.
Right now, almost 20 per cent of RVers say they use solar panels to power some of their on-board systems.
RVers have a responsi-bility to protect the envi-ronment. Help preserve the great outdoors for future generations by following
these conservation tips:Keep your RV • on roads that it is equipped to handle.Keep RV and tow-• vehicle engines well-tuned to con-serve energy and reduce emissions.Always use marked • RV campsites.Minimize the use • of disposables. Mix your own cold drinks from pow-ders and assign a mug to each family member rather than using paper cups. Discard excess packaging at home.Keep campfires • small to minimize the amount of ash and pollution. Don’t put anything into the fire pit that will not burn,
such as plastics, foils and metals. Observe fire rules, which may change each day with weather conditions.Where pets are • permitted, keep them indoors or use a screw-in stake. Tying them to trees can damage fragile bark.Work with nature. • In hot weather, use natural shade, awnings and can-vas covers. In cold weather, park where the RV will be protected from north and west winds.Leave the camp-• ground showers, dump station and campsite as clean as you found them.

FALL 2013 21Kamloops This Week
The world’s biggest motorcycle company seems determined to be the world’s busiest as well.
Over the past few years, Honda has bombarded the market with a barrage of new models to fill any per-ceived gaps in the lineup.
Most of the new bikes have been mid-size or smaller.
And while they hold some appeal for a few downsizers from a dwin-dling boomer market, most of these new products have been specifically designed to entice entry-level new-bies from a next genera-tion of riders.
This new millennial generation — the “Dek Neaw” of Thailand, the “Street-Kei” of Japan or “Generation Y” here in Canada — shares an Internet-influenced culture of borderless, fast-paced style and fashion.
They are looking for something fun, something new, something different.
And they are not going to be won over solely by scooters.
Enter the 2014 Grom, Honda’s latest little bike with big bike attitude.
A “grom” or “grom-met” comes from surf/snowboard speak.
It’s a slang name for kids with enough abili-ties to rip up the waves or downhill ski slopes alongside their adult coun-terparts.
And like those minia-ture athletes, the Grom boasts the attitude of a pint-sized performer.
It is part mini-bike, part motorcycle.
It blends a smallish pat-ented frame and 12-inch wheels with full-fledged motorcycle parts for an oddly appealing dwarf-ish style accented with a tough urban edge.
The Grom, also market-ed outside North America as the MSX125 (“Mini Street X-treme 125”), car-ries on a tradition that we can trace back to some of the original, small-wheeled bikes built by Honda in the past, starting in 1963 with the iconic Monkey, and followed up with the Dax and Ape.
As hinted at by the MSX125 name, the Grom is powered by a 125-cc two-valve, air-cooled sin-gle-cylinder engine.
The motor is based on one of Honda’s well-prov-en power units, recently employed in the Wave 125i with nearly a million sales globally.
It has earned interna-tional kudos and praise over the last decade for fuel efficiency, ease of use and longevity.
Although Honda has not released fuel-economy numbers, modern fuel injection and further tweaks in low-friction technology should result in very thrifty averages.
The 28.6-mm diameter bore exhaust pipe encour-ages power output in the mid- and upper-rpm rang-es and the muffler uses a dual-layer construction with a resin outer shield.
The Grom translates the estimated 10 horse power and eight pound-feet of torque through a tradi-tionally motorcycle-style clutch-operated four-speed gearbox designed to blend a balance of lively around-town response and easy top gear travel.
Complementing the powerplant, a compact chassis features a sturdy mono-backbone steel frame, inverted front fork, monoshock rear suspen-sion, hydraulic disc brakes front and rear, and light-weight 12-inch cast alumi-num wheels sporting wide, low profile tires.

Honda has applied for four patents based on the innovative split structure tank cover and frame, proof of just how serious they are about this new global small bike.
The frame architecture has also enabled efficient storage of PGM-FI-related components and electrical parts inside the tank cover without reducing fuel capacity (5.5 litres).
The wheelbase is a snug 1200 mil-limetres and the curb weight should work out to just over 100 kilograms.
But while the Grom is small enough to be nimble and manageable, it comes with a surprising selection of standard sized motorcycle parts and big bike features.
The Grom mounts a combined pro-jector headlight, probably the most prominent styling feature of this bug-eyed bike, while a bright LED taillight marks the rear of the bike’s stubby silhouette.
Riders look down on a compact and modern LCD digital dash complete with speedometer, twin trip meters, fuel gauge and clock.
And the low 765-mm scooter-like seat height makes the Grom manage-
able for any size rider. With its small size and portability,
all kinds of customers will be checking out the Grom, as either a perfect pit bike, motorhome accessory or urban runabout.
But small as it may be this is no out-of-a-box department store mini-bike.
Honda components, quality and reli-ability will add reassurance to a new way to add fun and independence to a young and vital lifestyle.
Yeah, with accent on the “young”.You get some idea of how young
a target market Honda is looking for when you watch promotional videos featuring wheelies, stoppies and just a lot of general hooning around going on.
To quote the Honda U.S.A. site: “With your own wheels, you can bag the bus and forget about having to beg for rides from your friends or — shud-der — your Mom.”
Honda Canada will be releasing prices and more details soon.
While I usually end these preview stories with promises of a future road test review, I might have to leave the brand new 2014 Honda Grom test ride up to some young “grommet.”

Honda’s 2014 Grom is a little bike with big attitude and a fresh, new way to add some fun, practicality, independence and style to your life. The Grom features a compact frame, 12-inch wheels, a 125-cc engine and street-legal big-bike components.

Born across the street from each other in Milwaukee, Miller High Life and Harley-Davidson have been mak-ing timeless American products for 110 years.
Now they’re making something together.
Recently, Bill Davidson, vice-pres-ident of the Harley-Davidson Museum and great-grandson of Harley-Davidson co-founder William A. Davidson, offi-cially kicked-off a multi-year partnership with Miller High Life by helping brew-masters make a batch of the Champagne of Beers.
“It’s incredible to think that Harley-Davidson and Miller High Life were born on the same stretch of road 110 years ago,” Davidson said. “This part-nership and our 110th anniversary events in Milwaukee celebrate our common bonds, our shared history and our bright futures.”
The beer brewed with Davidson will not be specially marked and will instead be distributed like any other batch of High Life brewed in the Miller Brewery.
So, this year, whenever someone cel-
ebrates after a great ride by enjoying the Champagne of Beers, they might be sip-ping this special batch. Harley-Davidson and Miller High Life will also keep some of this batch aside to celebrate spe-cial occasions with consumers through-out the year.
Beyond the unique batch of brew, commemorative Harley-Davidson designs will be featured on Miller High Life cans and packaging.
The partnership will bring custom-ized Harley-Davidson motorcycles with Miller High Life graphics to participat-ing retail stores.

“Less is more . . . much more.”
That tag line from the pro-motional bumpf pretty well sums up the design philosophy of the 2014 Bolt.
When it comes to cruisers, Yamaha tends to hit the ball out of the park every time.
Think of recent releases like the Raider and Stryker.
While those two factory-custom variants aren’t all that outrageous, we’ve probably all had our fill of bling bikes, the stretched, super-chromed choppers and theme bikes on display at motorcycle shows year after year.
The Bolt is part of a new evolution away from those extremes, with less chrome, less glitz, less flash, less fancy paint.
“A new ‘back to basics’ trend is emerging in the motorcycle world,” said
John Bayliss, Yamaha Motor Canada motorcycle product manager.
“Designers and custom builders are stepping back to a time when the mechanical beauty of a motorcycle was highlighted in its design.”
Back to basics, yeah, I liken it to the way punk bands returned rock ‘n roll to its grittier roots, stripping away the glam rock and hair band excesses of the 1980s.
The Bolt starts simply enough with a tube-type, single-backbone double-cradle steel frame that uses the motor as a four-point stressed mem-ber of the chassis, a layout designed to accent a solid feel and taut handling.
The architecture blends standard bike construction with a healthy dose of cruiser attitude without all the glossy extras.
Seating is accessibly low (690 millimetres), but upright with a corresponding low reach forward to the handle-bars.
The pegs perch directly
under the rider.I suppose we could cat-
egorize this motorcycle as a mid-size, considering the near one-litre powerplant, and the Bolt does look manageably
small and compact, as you gaze down at the slim teardrop tank and taut dimensions.
BACK TO BASICS WITH THE BOLT Yamaha is appealing to riders’ nostalgic side

The 2013 FJR1300, a sport touring motorcycle that blends the best of both worlds — performance and touring comfort — in a redesigned package that adds drive-by-wire technology, traction control, cruise control, linked ABS braking and a long list of added features including heated grips, electric windscreen and 30-litre colour-matched hardshell sidecases. With a unique and up-to-date blend of performance, technologies and touring comforts, it is a competent competitor in it class, a sport tourer redefined, and a bike that should be on every rider’s test ride list. The FJR1300 has been around for a decade, first debuting in Canada as a 2003 model. This redesigned third-generation version, introduced last fall, adds adjustments, improvements and a whole lot of new technologies.

26 FALL 2013 Kamloops This Week
In fact, taller riders like me need not apply. With the short ergonomic triangle — handgrips to hip point to pegs — I felt like a giraffe in a pram, all knees above the tank line and hips cramping up.
This could be alleviated somewhat by an accessory kit that moves the pegs forward 2.5 inches ($451.95).
Yet, don’t let me convince you that the Bolt is actually a small bike.
It still weighs in at a sub-stantial 247 kilograms and the centralized mass spreads out closer to the bottom.
The “raw metal” styled, fuel-injected, 4-valve motor, adapted from the V-Star 950 is complemented nicely by the open mechanical layout of the bike, minimal chrome use and perforated exhaust guards and styling accents.
The engine makes nearly 60 pound-feet of torque and pulls merrily with a nice throb resounding through the 2-in-to-1 exhaust system.
With an accent on good low-to-mid-range torque, the Bolt’s V-Twin channels power through a five-speed transmis-sion and belt drive.
Now, with all this talk about the minimalist stripped-down styling cues and throwback hints of the past, it’s easy to overlook some very modern additions that include fuel injection, wave disc brake rotors and a modern taillamp assembly housing 19 LEDs.
A digital LCD gauge pack-age with speedometer, odom-eter, dual tripmeters, fuel-re-serve tripmeter and clock is set in a traditionally styled round chrome housing.
A switch assembly on the right side handlebar allows the
rider to scroll through readouts or re-set instrument functions.
The Bolt comes in two fla-vours, the regular Bolt ($8,999) offered in Bluish White Cocktail and Metallic Black and the Bolt R-Spec ($9,199) available in Matte Metallic Gray and High Sparkle Green.
The main difference to the R-Spec model is an enhanced
suspension system with pre-mium gas charged piggyback shocks.
Suspension travel is the same on both bikes but the pre-mium system does smooth out the bumps.
And the added gold-coloured, techie components finish the look nicely.
I rode both models and,
frankly, for a lousy $200 extra, the R-Spec is a forehead-slap-ping logical choice.
The R-Spec also adds black mirrors, a special upgraded suede-like seat finish and funky stencil-style gas tank logo design that, especially comple-menting the green colour and utilitarian styling, gives the bike an almost retro military flavour.
With a fresh new minimal-ist flavour featuring simplified styling and open mechani-cals, echoing an era of retro architecture while enhancing performance with modern technological tweaks, Yamaha has labeled the Bolt as “a new breed of crossover”.
And in regular Bolt or R-Spec flavour, this punk neo-bobber blends natural upright riding comfort and classic cruiser cues in a distinctively new way.

Thank You Kamloops & Surrounding Area for 20 Successful Years!20 years in business, Wow! It can be amazing how time ies. When we opened Cactus Collision in 1993, we had humble goals and alot of worries. Would we succeed? How to do this, how to do that? It was an interesting experience, to say the least.
But before long, the people of Kamloops & surrounding areas came to the forefront. Our questions became less “How to do” and more “How to help”. We love being able to help our neighbors, friends, and trusted clients.
After 20 years in business, we have taken those “How to” questions and turned them into “Must Do” company policies. We have always taken pride in ensuring quality service, and always smile when our customers leave happy and satis ed.
We look forward to serving you for many more years to come!
