Aloha,

Welcome to the new school year 2016-17! Kalaheo High School received a full

six-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)

after an official visit in February. Last school year Kalaheo was listed in The Washing-

ton Post's "2016 America's Most Challenging High Schools" based upon the school's

offering a rigorous college-level Advanced Placement academic experience for students.

Our staff will continue our school emphasis on preparing every student for college and/

or career upon graduation. A new initiative begins this school year - Kalaheo High's

bell schedule has been changed: Students must be in class ready to learn at 8:35 a.m.

and dismissal times will be either 2:40 p.m. or 1:20 p.m. on staff meeting days. Stu-

dents will be able to meet with their teachers for extra help, tutoring, or consulting be-

fore school begins from 8:00 - 8:30 a.m. every day. This new bell schedule aligns with

the WASC recommendation that more time be available for students to meet with their

teachers outside of the instructional period, which was a significant need expressed by

the students. The entire bell schedule is published in this newsletter. Breakfast service

will continue to begin at 7:30 a.m.

Kalaheo High School has a dress code; we will be expecting all students to

comply with the dress code for students. A copy of the dress code is included in this

newsletter on page 5 and is published in the student planner for this school year. Stu-

dents: please read the code carefully and be ready to attend school dressed appropri-

ately. We appreciate your cooperation as we move forward into the school year with an

emphasis on high expectations for a positive learning environment.

All of our Kalaheo High School families are invited to our Open House on

Tuesday August 9 at 6:30 p.m. You will be able to meet school staff, PTSA members,

and visit classrooms to meet teachers and learn more about the subjects and standards

our students will be learning.

Throughout the school year we invite all of our parents, families, and commu-

nity members to our school events and activities. Volunteers who are able to help out

this school year are encouraged to contact PCNC Meg Gammon ([email protected]).

The Kalaheo PTSA invites new members for this school year as the organization fo-

cuses on supporting student achievement and improving our campus facility and land-

scape. Our School Community Council meets monthly and welcomes community input.

We welcome your involvement and assistance; we need and appreciate your kokua and

support

Got Physical Exam?

Student athletes who are

planning to be part of ath-

letics next year should

schedule an appt with their

doctor for an annual physi-

cal. This is needed for pre-

season training and condi-

tioning as well as for play-

ing their sport.

A physical is effective for

ONE

year

from the

date

taken.
