    FEATURE STORY | GROWTH

Jotun is a name synonymous with paint products in theUnited Arab Emirates (UAE) today; however its growthdid not happen overnight. The Company's history in theEmirate is as old as the country itself and Jotun is extremelyproud to have prospered along with the UAE.

Jotun Powder Coatings's association with the UAEbegan in 1970, just before the UAE was formed, when it first started importing powder fromNorway and Thailand to the then fledgling nation.

The region that is the UAE has a history stretching back tonearly 5,500 BC, when it was the route used by early manto move out of Africa into Asia. Through the centuries thatfollowed, it thrived as a trading point between continents,

till the British brought the individual emirates togetherunder their protection as 'The Trucial states'. Followingtheir withdrawal in 1968, His Highness (H.H.) Sheikh Zayedbin Sultan Al Nahyan called for a federation in 1971 that

brought together Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah,Umm al-Quwain, Fujairah, Ajman and a year laterRas Al Khaimah to form the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE has not looked back since, forging a distinct identityfor itself under a common banner to emerge as a bridgebetween Europe, Asia and Africa. In 1974, one of the firstbig steps to strengthen the economy was made when theUAE merged the oil departments of the various Emiratesunder the UAE Petroleum Ministry. Thereafter, the young

country made its presence felt in the global political arenawith a string of important decisions and associations overthe next few years. In 1981 the Gulf Cooperation Councilor GCC was formed bringing together the states of Bahrain,Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. In oneswift move, the entire region became a force to be reckonedwith as the GCC initiated a host of joint venture projects in avariety of fields.

Jotun Powder Coatings UAE has grown to supplya vast range of products in various quantities fordifferent markets and applications.

The advent of the new millennium saw the UAE take thefirst steps towards making a strong impression on the globalstage by revealing the farsighted strategy of its rulers. Thenew millennium saw the UAE invest heavily in infrastructure.Roads, bridges, airports, sea-ports, public transport, medicalservices and the hospitality industry. This was investment thattransformed the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai overnight, into metropolises offering among the best standards of livingavailable worldwide.

With its visionary development, not surprising that today, both Abu Dhabi and Dubai are proud homes to iconic

architectural marvels like Dubai Airport, Burj Khalifa, SheikhZayed Bridge, Ferrari World and the Sheikh Zayed Bin SultanAl Nayhan Mosque among numerous others. Each of thesestructures continue to capture the world's imaginationevery day.

Jotun has kept pace right along with this meteoric growth.

In fact, Jotun Powder Coatings UAE has been associated withthe country since 1970, just before the UAE was formed. At this time, Jotun started importing powder from Norwayand Thailand to the then fledgling nation. From being thefirst powder coating supplier to the UAE, Jotun PowderCoatings UAE has grown to supply a vast range of productsin various quantities for different markets and applications. From 1990, when the factory was inaugurated by H.H.Sheikh Hamadan, to now the factory has undergone manystages of expansion. These include higher productivity tomore office space and now the upcoming accommodationfor a greater strength of people.

Not a company to sit back and enjoy its early starteradvantage, Jotun has regularly introduced innovations inkeeping with market demands. For example, The SuperDurable technology in 1990, Cool Shades in 2009, GuardMiles in 2010 and most recently Reveal Edge in 2013. Eachof these products immediately found favour in the marketand changed the dynamics within the local powder industry.

With its continuing focus on building customer relationships,Jotun has always gone out of its way to meet the needs ofits customers. As traditional architectural styles gave way totoday's glass and aluminum facades, powder coatings forarchitecture were introduced and they soon became thepreferred choice among leading architects and designers.

Today, many iconic structures in the UAE such as the Burj AlArab, Emirates Towers and Dubai International Airport areproudly protected by Jotun Powder Coatings.

Just like the UAE has grown from a tribal society reliant onpearl diving and fishing to become a modern success storywhere the impossible is possible, Jotun has ambitiouslygrown with it. Today Jotun Powder Coatings UAE is tentimes the size compared to what it was way back in 1970.

The Powder Coatings business in UAE forJotun is a strategically important one. This isdemonstrated by the recent opening of theR&D technical centre in Dubai, the first ofits kind outside of Norway. It will be responsiblefor developing bespoke solutions forcustomers, especially for addressing local andregional product needs in three regions; West-Europe, East-Europe and MEIA (Middle East,India & Africa).

Moreover, Jotun Powder Coatings UAE has grown fromimporting powders to exporting them from the UAE. Marketsnow include not only the GCC, but places as far away asthe Americas and Australia, and sectors such as Oil & Gas,Construction, Manufacturing and more.

The future is what you make of it. Both for the UAE andJotun, rest assured it will be glorious.

Dubai was severely hit by the financial downturnover the past few years and this particularlyimpacted the building sector, which is a bigcustomer of powder coatings. However, businessis starting to pick up again and we can certainlysee that optimism is beginning to return tothe emirate.

Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is about to make itsmark with the completion of its Information TechnologyCommunications Complex (ITCC), the Kingdom's first 'smartcity'. Jotun Powder Coatings was able to assist in several keyaspects, including working with architects and interestedparties to develop specialised coating products.

ITCC has been built to draw leading InformationTechnology Communications companies from around theworld. It has top-class facilities that will enable businessesto "extend their operations".

Developed by Rayadah Investment Company, theinvestment arm of the government's Public PensionsAgency, with master planning by Zuhair Fayez Partnership,ITCC covers 776,000m². Included in the complex are

administration buildings for ITC companies, technicalbusiness centres, buildings for research, training anddevelopment and software production companies.

Not only will ITCC cater for the business side of theindustry, it also provides support services such as hotels,

restaurants, a convention centre, residential apartments,a technical college and government service buildings".

    Constructing the future

The multi-million dollar project was split into severalpackages, with the main one being completed by Al RajhiProjects.

Al Rajhi Projects won the tender to complete the centraldevelopment of ITCC – four 20-storey towers at theheart of the complex. They also built two researchand development buildings, two business technologyincubator buildings, a sports club and a clinic. Al GhurairConstruction was sub-contracted to complete the facadesof the towers and the aim was to create visual, yetpractical masterpieces.

Construction Contracting Enterprises is looking afteranother package and are building a 326 room CrownPlaza hotel and a convention centre. Al Yamama Companywon the final package and is constructing a $50 millionresidential complex complete with apartments, villas andrecreational areas.

    Supplying the perfect finish

Such a large scale project demands the best of finishes.Initially, master planners Zuhair Fayez Partnership specifiedCorro-Coat PE-SDF Super Durable for the towers' finishhowever Al Ghurair Construction requested a finish withan intense sparkle, as well as the ability to withstand thetough Saudi Arabia climate.

Kaleidoscope sat down with Mr Abdullah Hamid,Operations Manager - Saudi from Al Ghurair Construction– Aluminium, to discuss his thoughts about this newsmart city about to be completed in Saudi Arabia and the

    requirement of aluminium finishes.

Mr Abdullah Hamid admits, "We knew it would be difficultto achieve such high requirements in terms of aestheticappeal and weathering resistance at the same time withconventional powder coating technology, but Jotunstepped up to the challenge."

After many trials, a bonded metallic Super Durable powdercoating was submitted for approval. The end result metthe requirements of durability in the harsh Riyadh sun, andthe specialised aesthetic desired. Jotun also supplied ITCCwith a grey silver metallic colour for the aluminium onthe four 20 storey towers, residential complex, villas andrecreational areas.

Such a large scale project demands the best offinishes. A finish with an intense sparkle, as wellas the ability to withstand the tough Saudi Arabia

    climate was requested.

    Protecting the environment

As well as bringing together social and information

structures, the ITCC smart city aims to use and implementenvironmentally sound materials and systems. Allbuildings in ITCC will achieve, at a minimum, basic LEEDenvironmental certification.

A unique cladding design wraps around the four centraltowers in ITCC that is specially designed to reflect the sun'srays, reducing the temperature inside the building – in turnsaving cooling costs.

About 1.4 meters from the curtain wall an aluminiumsheet has been put in place covering the entire building. The sheet is perforated, allowing those inside the buildingto see out whilst providing privacy from the glass from

outside. Diamond-shaped panels hold the aluminiumsheets and are individually lit, illuminating the four towersat night. This creates changing patterns that are eye-catching and basically create art in the sky.

During the day, the sheets are equally as pleasant toview, with a golden shine coating the aluminium. The'golden shine' presented another challenge for Jotun asoriginally the architect specified a PVDF finish in a brightgold colour finish.

As Abdullah admits "The choice was hard to colour matchin a powder coating finish however Jotun managed tosolve this. A series of meetings were held between Jotun, the architects and our team at Al Ghurair Construction,

with the positive outcome to use Super Durable insteadof PVDF. The deciding factors were the better abrasionresistance of Super Durables, negligible VOC content andrecyclability during application."

The final result is a stunning golden sheen that reflects upto 60% of the solar gain. All four towers form a strikingcentrepiece, with the gold aluminium screens adorningthe front façade the icing on the cake. All parties involvedagree that the result is simply magnificent.

"We are very pleased with Jotun's interest in our projectand we are very confident of the performance of theirproducts. As the façade sub-contractor, we believe ourrelationship with Jotun has been strengthened by meetingthis project's challenges", said Mr Abdullah Hamid.

We knew it would be difficult to achieve suchhigh requirements in terms of aesthetic appealand weathering resistance at the same time withconventional powder coating technology, butJotun stepped up to the challenge.

Once completed, ITCC will be one of the largest projects

Jotun Powder Coatings has undertaken. On the worldwidestage, ITCC is a flagship project for the Kingdom ofSaudi Arabia and indeed for Al Ghurair Constructionand Jotun.

Just a few years after Sharjah joined the United ArabEmirates, Sharjah Glass was born. Initially set up as a glassand fabrication business, Sharjah Glass has grown to employover 120 people within three divisions – Glass, PowderCoating and a Retail showroom.

The company's history in powder coating dates back to1991 when they decided to install a powder coating linethat offered the service to customers on a case by case

basis. By doing so, they avoided the delays that occurredwhen the job was outsourced.

The decision to introduce powder coating to Sharjah Glass'srepertoire was an easy one. "We studied the market andsaw that there was a need for quality powder coating, plusit was commercially viable for us and made good businesssense", said Yusuf Ustad, Managing Partner. "We were ableto use our existing business license under the name SharjahGlass and became one of the first coaters in the country."

At the same time, Jotun started manufacturing operations inthe UAE, neither company realising the future relationshipthat would form. Initially, Sharjah Glass set up coating

for 150 metric tonnes of aluminium per month. After sixmonths of resolving minor teething problems, the servicestarted taking off and within a year the operation evolved totwo shifts.

Over the next five years, the powder coating line grew to apoint where the capacity could no longer cope with marketdemands. A new line capable of 300 metric tonnes permonth was installed and Sharjah Glass has never lookedback. With an emphasis on quality, high standards of workwere expected and met. In its journey of growth they founda partner in Jotun who has been able to offer quality ofproduct and services, which is a key factor for growth insuch high paced market.

We studied the market and saw that therewas a need for quality powder coating, plusit was commercially viable for us and made goodbusiness sense.

    Watching the region grow

Since 1990, Sharjah Glass has seen the coating business inthe region grow, slowly at first, then in leaps and bounds

from 2000 onwards. The industry has managed to remainstable despite periods of instability in the area, due to geopolitical situations such as the Gulf War and the Syrian crisis, and the financial recession of 2008. In fact, its ability tobounce back from these downturns is outstanding.

The construction boom that began in the region in the2000's brought major projects to life, creating high demandfor all related industries, including powder coating. Withthe UAE firmly on the world map, Sharjah Glass took theopportunity to expand and shifted from catering only to

customers in Sharjah, to customers throughout the Emirates.

The construction boom that began in the regionin the 2000's brought major projects to life, creating high demand for all related industries, including powder coating.

    Recovering from the recession

The financial crisis which began in 2008 wasn't truly felt bySharjah Glass until 2011. When the crisis hit, the company

already had a number of secured projects which kept themworking consistently for some time. During 2011-12, themarket began to slow down and Sharjah Glass needed toadjust their practises to suit. "We've had to reduce shiftsand although costs have increased, we've managed to becompetitive to ensure our affordability in tough times", saidVikar Ali Khan, Manager – Powder Coatings.

    Key factors of growth

"People are our greatest asset", said Yusef. "We havepeople who joined us during our initial period and are stillwith us today". After 20 years or more of service, such

employees form the Sharjah Glass family. This is a key factorfor the successful growth experienced because the peopleunderstand the process and customers. It also results inquick turnaround of pick up, coating and overnight delivery.

The benefit to Sharjah Glass is reduced lead time and timelyexecution of jobs.

Customers are also a key to growth. "Just like our staff,we also value our customers and ensure we deliver qualityproducts and create a positive working relationship",said Vikar. "We have had times where we have sacrificed

profit for the sake of relationships as we know that as ourcustomers grow, we too grow with them."

The team at Sharjah Glass also acknowledge the differencethat suppliers like Jotun have made. Yusef is quick to state,"Our suppliers such as Jotun keep us informed about themarket and ensure our quality remains up to standard. Weparticularly appreciate the input from Jotun and have reliedon their service for years."

    Planning for the future

So far, 2013 is showing signs of growth. Work levelsat Sharjah Glass are back to full shifts and look to be

sustainable into the future. Construction activity in bothQatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is heightened andSharjah Glass is feeling the positive effects of this. Lookingforward, a number of new projects have been announcedthroughout the Emirates, plus Dubai is a candidate city forExpo 2020.

Indeed, the future is looking bright for Sharjah Glass and theteam are optimistic about new opportunities.

Just like our staff, we also value our customersand ensure we deliver quality products and

    create a positive working relationship.
