Kalamazoo Valley Cougars Basketball 2011-2012

With three Kalamazoo locations—a main campus in Texas Township, the nearby Groves Campus, and Arcadia Commons Campus in downtown Kalamazoo—Kalamazoo Valley Community College offers certificate programs in more than 20 areas of study and associate degrees in 25 others.

These include business, healthcare, human and public service, and technical occupations, the latest of which is a pioneering effort in training wind-energy technology.

Kalamazoo Valley also provides student-placement services and works closely with other institutions to ensure the transfer of students’ credits. A fully accredited institution, Kalamazoo Valley offers day and evening, online and weekend classes for its 14,000 students.

Form follows function at Kalamazoo Valley so the decision to centralize services linking students to a wide spectrum of KVCC resources has proven to be a success. Launched as a pilot program in 2007, the Student Services Center in a new wing at the Texas Township Campus has grown to serve more than 1,900 students each semester.

While student services such as counseling, tutoring and career advising have been a part of the college throughout its history, the Student Success Center expands those services. Essential to this proactive approach are the “student success advocates,” a new type of mentor created to give students intensive individual support, tracking and follow up.

Students and advocates work together from a signed agreement which formalizes the responsibilities of both parties. The advocate

serves as the personalized contact for assistance, referral and support as the student navigates his/her way through the college experience.

Follow up and accountability are crucial to student success. Any student can benefit from the variety of resources provided at the SSC. Research proves that students who access SSC services are 18% more likely to achieve their educational goal, whether that is getting training for job advancement, attaining a certificate or associate degree, transferring to a four-year institution, or personal enrichment.

Similar services are provided at the SSC in Anna Whitten Hall on the Arcadia Commons Campus downtown.

The new Student Success Center opened at KVCC’s Texas Township Campus in November 2010. It was part of a $12-million renovation and expansion project that was the college’s first major construction since the Student Commons was built in 2001.

The 2011-12 season marks the beginning of several firsts for the Cougars. With the retirement of Dick Shilts, after 32 years at the helm, former assistant coach, Matt Dennis, takes over as head coach. Dennis brings with him former high school and college basketball coach Damian Smith to lead a recruiting class that includes 14 freshmen and one returning sophomore.

Although the Cougars are young, they do not lack the talent and athleticism to be a contender in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western

Conference. With good size and quickness, they should be able to apply pressure to the opposing team on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The real test for the Cougars will be how quickly they can adjust to the college game, both mentally and physically. “I think we have a very talented group of players who can compete right away.

They will have to quickly adjust to the college game to realize their individual potential as well as the team’s full potential,” said Coach Dennis.

The Cougars have shown great commitment in pre-season conditioning and player development sessions. According to Coach Dennis, “The attitude, effort, and togetherness seem to be strengths of this year’s team.“ The Cougars will look to build upon these attributes as they come together and prepare for their early season games and play in the MCCAA Western Conference.

During the 2011-12 season there will be new faces in almost every facet of the men’s basketball program. The commitment to recruiting solid student-athletes who play hard and play together, however, will remain the same . “I believe the men’s basketball program has a great group of student-athletes,” said Dennis, “who will represent Kalamazoo Valley in the classroom and on the court. This team will continue the great tradition and reputation Kalamazoo Valley athletics is known for.”

Head coach Ron Welch and assistant coach Maureen Brown are optimistic about the team’s potential. “We have been impressed with this group’s leadership and work ethic in our first few weeks of work and feel confident that they will lead us where we want to go this year,” Coach Welch said. “I really like the chemistry with this team so far.”

The team has already bonded, both on the court and in the community where they volunteered with the West Michigan Cancer Center’s annual Summerfest for patients. “They have already made us very

proud of the effort put forth by them in this very worthy cause,” Coach Welch said. “Look for more to follow.”

Coach Welch said he thinks there are many good offensive players on the team, but the key to success will be defense. “It always comes down to how good your team is defensively,” he said.

“Our strength again this year will be our depth and the number of ‘weapons’ we will be able to put on the floor,” said Coach Welch. “I really like what I’ve seen with this group, and the sophomores’ desire to make their own mark on the Lady Cougar tradition and get back to the National tournament has impressed me. I can see this team climbing to great heights as the freshmen begin to mature as college players and get into the mix. We will have exceptional depth at every position, with size, quickness and speed, and several kids that I would consider play-makers.

All this being said, it will come down—as it usually does—to a couple of things: how we come together as a team and how willing we are to accept our individual roles. Rebounding and defense have been staples of our program for a long time and have provided success for the program in the past. If these players buy in to the way we play, this could be a special group and make their mark on a tradition already marked with excellence.”
