Any person who works in the schools is eligible for nomination, including bus drivers, aides, teachers, secretaries, custodians, principals, administrators, psychologists, social workers, therapists and consultants. Award recipients will be recognized at a school board meeting in their local district, in their individual school and at a meeting of the Special Education Parent Advisory Committee. About 20 students have participated in the project, writing articles and taking photos with guidance from YAP staff members. e journalism class has hosted and interviewed several guest speakers, including Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell, Western Michigan University football quarterback Tim Hiller, Kalamazoo Gazette reporter Rex Hall and Kalamazoo RESA Deputy Superintendent Holly Norman. e students published their seventh issue in June. YAP provides instructional services to help students with disabilities between 18 and 26 years old transition from school to adult community living. Scholarship recipients from throughout Kalamazoo County received recognition for their achievements at an awards breakfast on May 13 at Kalamazoo RESA. e Kalamazoo RESA Foundation honored 39 high school seniors and 31 college students with scholarships worth a total of $27,450. e foundation annually awards scholarships in Kalamazoo County. Kalamazoo RESA provides innovative and responsive Kalamazoo RESA’s Education for Employment program and Dav- enport University hosted a business competition on May 14 at Dav- enport’s campus in Kalamazoo. It featured a business wear fashion show presented by students, individual and team competitions in business skills, a Jeopardy contest and a commercial competition. Students from Kalamazoo RESA’s Education for Employment (EFE) cosmetology program volunteered to help the Croyden students with hairstyling, makeup and nails in preparation for the afternoon dance. Wright Beauty Academy donated the supplies. Volunteers included Wright Beauty Academy instructor Whillock Koester, Portage Northern High School students Meghan Erridge and Carly Swoape, Portage Central High School students Ariana Crane and Natalie Drabik and ree Rivers High School student Kaytlynn Davidson. English is a teacher consultant and orientation and mobility specialist who works with visually impaired students in all nine school districts across Kalamazoo County. Award recipients are nominated by their respective school or district administrators, colleagues and parents. English was nominated by Alissa Williams, a parent of one of her students at Gull Lake High School. Parent advisory committee recognizes excellence in special education with annual awardsKalamazoo RESA’s Special Education Parent Advisory Committee recognized 22 school employees from throughout Kalamazoo County with 2010 Excellence in Special Education awards.

The awards honor school staff members in Kalamazoo County for their outstanding work with special education students.
