FUN FACTS ABOUT CARROTS AND POTATOES
As we look toward spring and summer, plant our gardens or visiting the farmer’s market – here are some fun facts about carrots and potatoes:
Carrots have the highest Vitamin A content of all vegetables, and contain fiber, potassium and Vitamin C
There are about 100 potato producing farms in Michigan, over 44,000 acres
The more orange carrots look the more beta-carotene (an anti-oxidant) the contain, which is good for your eyesight
Potatoes grown in Michigan are used in the following ways – 20% bags in stores, 70% to make potato chips, 5 % for fresh processed, 5% for seed
Some carrots are purple, white, red or yellow
The average person consumes 132 pounds of potatoes a year (50 lbs. is fresh, 82 lbs. in chips, frozen or other products)
Carrots were really dangled in front of donkeys to get them to move
The most common grown potatoes in Michigan are round whites, russets and yellow flesh
A teaspoon holds almost 2000 carrot seeds
The estimated value of potatoes grown in Michigan annual is 120 million dollars
Carrots originated in Middle Asia around Afghanistan and were most likely used for medicinal purposes instead of food.

Avian influenza update
In view of all of the buzz about Avian Influenza on the news we wanted to share the latest word from Dr. Nancy Barr,
the Michigan state avian vet who reports that Michigan is still HPAI free. MSU Extension has several resources on
keeping poultry from being exposed and the symptoms of Avian Flu in your flock - http://msue.anr.msu.edu/program/
info/avian_influenza. The USDA website also has information about biosecurity for your animals --- http://
blogs.usda.gov/2015/03/27/bird-flu-is-a-reminder-for-back-yard-poultry-owners-to-protect-their-birds-by-practicing-
good-biosecurity/. Biosecurity is the simplest way for you to keep germs away from your animals and your animals
away from germs. It is important that when you are taking care of your animals you do your best to keep yourself, your
equipment and your animals home clean. See the above link from MSU Extension for more information on having
your animals tested if you believe that one or more of them has been infected

Grow a row, Give a row
As the weather is warming up and we are thinking about getting our gardens ready to plant, it is a great
time to think about sharing with others. Recently staff from MSU Extension –Kalamazoo County 4-H and
Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes met to talk about the growing need for fresh fruits and vegetables to those in
need. One of the suggestions staff cooperatively came up with was the idea of families planting a row in
their garden specifically for donating to local food banks such as Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes. Through
this project youth can be taught not only about gardening but life skills such as wise use of resources (not
letting produce go to waste), planning/organizing, service learning, healthy lifestyle choices, self-esteem,
responsible leadership, sharing and concern for others. For more information on Kalamazoo Loaves and
Fish or to learn more about the need for donations please see their website at http://www.kzoolf.org/.

STATEWIDE NEWS AREA
2015 National 4-H Congress: Excite, Spark Ignite!
National 4-H Congress is the flagship event of the 4‑H program. It is a five-day educational gathering that brings together outstanding 4-H members from across the nation to share ideas and experiences. For more than 90 years, youth from the United States and its territories have par-ticipated in this youth leadership-development conference. Congress provides youth with high-quality educational, leadership, community-service and cultural opportunities such as:
Workshops with topics that include leadership development, character education, agriculture, cultural awareness and diversity education, workforce preparation, environmental steward-ship, science and technology, literacy- and communication-skills development.
Assemblies, seminars, and discussion groups about issues facing our country today and a town hall meeting they moder-ate where they share the results of those discussions.
Hands‑on projects during a community-service day, at which they learn to work with others to assist individuals and com-munity organizations to improve themselves.
Networking skills to help them in their after‑conference work to address youth needs in their community and state.
In short, Congress is designed to address youth needs and issues, while helping to develop capable, competent and caring citizens.
Who: Congress is designed for youth aged 15 to 19.
When: November 27 – December 1, 2015
Where: Hyatt Regency (http://atlantaregency.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html), Atlanta, Georgia
How In Michigan, counties identify their delegates and the State 4-H Office provides coordination for the trip. Therefore, interested Michigan 4-H members should contact 4-H staff in their local MSU Extension office (http://bit.ly/1u0f9E3). While there is no limit to the number of partici-pants counties can send, young people are strongly encouraged to attend only once since each year’s program is similar.
Cost The 2015 cost (that includes airfare, registration fee, lodging, snacks, most meals, two shirts and a photograph) is approximately $1,300 per young person.

Learn by Doing
In 4-H, we learn by do-ing. We help young peo-ple gain skills through hands-on experiences that allow them to per-form an activity; then we follow that up with im-portant and purposeful questions. This is called “experiential learning.” Participants: Experience an activity Share the results Process by discus-
sion Generalize to under-
stand how it connects to the real world
Apply what they learned to other situa-tions.
When 4-H volunteers use this model, every-one benefits from the exchange of ideas, and everyone grows in knowledge and the abil-ity to apply what was learned in other settings.
14 STATEWIDE CALENDAR OF EVENTS
How Does Your Garden Grow?
Gardens can be a great way for youth and adults to connect with nature and enjoy some quality time together. A garden can be in a pot, on a patio, in a square foot or a good-sized plot. You can grow herbs, vegeta-bles, flowers or a mix-ture of it all. There is no one way to grow a gar-den, but a variety of plants to enjoy and methods can lead to fun, colorful results that taste great. Have questions? Con-tact the MSU Extension Lawn and Garden Hot-line at 888-MSUE-4MI (888-678-3464). The phone line is answered weekdays between 9 am and noon and 1 to 4 pm. Calls during other times will be directed to the "Ask an Expert" fea-ture at http://bit.ly/1K2vUS6.
