Deborah BentonOffice Administrator121 S. Orange Ave., Suite 900Orlando, Fl 32801407-476-0256

Dear Mrs. Benton,

The Vaughn Law Group is such a successful law firm, and I would like to continue contributing to it as a full-time file clerk this summer. Because of my ability to work individually and stay motivated, I think would make a great addition to your full-time staff.

As an employee for the past eight months, I have organized and updated files and medical records, scanned documents, input information into Client Documents, helped answer phones, deposited checks, and built mail-out advertisements. I also assisted other employees in any capacity I could. With this knowledge and experience, I believe I should be considered for a full-time position.

I enjoy working with and helping others and have learned to become more detail oriented in order to complete work efficiently; with these skills I would be a perfect candidate. This position would give me the ability to continue to develop these skills and opportunities for my future goals.

Thank you for taking the time to review this letter and the following resume; however, I feel an interview would better convey my abilities. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Respectfully yours,

Kaitlyn DikeEnclosed: resume

Learning about journalism intrigued me during my freshman year in Journalism I, and I thought that it was exciting to make a product that the whole school would enjoy. I joined the yearbook staff my sophomore year and have been on staff since, as it quickly became one of my favorite parts of the high school experience. Throughout this year, I have learned more about design as it was my first chance to actually create pages that would be in the book. Editing other people’s work was also a learning experience because I had to balance being on time for my deadlines as well as making sure other staffers were on time for their deadlines and not being held back by my grading. Teamwork was another important element of creating the book this year; everyone contributed and helped as much as they could which was key in catching up those who were behind. For advertising sales, I learned that it is important to maintain good relationships with business owners so that they would continue to buy ads and fund the book. Journalism ethics were still an important part of the year especially because our staff had a bad habit of using press passes to get into games we were not covering, last year. Most important, though, was dedication. I felt bad that I had to leave early on deadline days and missed a workday because of my job, and had to learn to prioritize and be dedicated to staff because I signed a contract saying that I would do so, and a lack of dedication would add extra work onto other editor’s plates. Seeing past editors quit during a deadline, or a tough situation was disheartening. I learned that although problems may arise, our book would not be complete without a driven staff and advisor.

self-analytical evaluation

The most significant piece of work that I completed for the book this year was the index. The index was the culmination of all my work this year, and I am proud that my name is on it and that everyone will be able to see it. I wanted to make an index that students will enjoy looking at and reading while they are searching for their names. My purpose was to make a comprehensive index of everyone in the book and stories of current events from the year. At first, I thought that the index would be easy because most of the current events were assigned to and written by other staffers during deadline 5 and I only had to write six of them. However, it was more difficult because there were a lot of small details that had to be perfect before the index could be shipped. A problem I ran into was not being able to fit all of the names into the pages I was allotted, and having to add another page. Because of the new page, I then had to write an new current event story and create new additional coverage, the day before the pages were supposed to shipped. Looking back, I don’t think that creating the index was too hard, and I am proud of the final product. Overall, the index will give students a good overview of the year and hopefully they will enjoy it.

reflection 1

The page that I feel could still use some work is the Overcoming Differences page. Although the page is not bad, I feel that the story about Jacob Strandberg is not very interesting and I wish that I could have gotten more emotional or intriguing quotes from him. I learned during this deadline that I had to be very sensitive to the disabled students that I interviewed and careful to avoid being offensive. While first working on the page, I had a rough start because one of the students was very weary about being interviewed and was worried that I would write a story about being unable to live a normal life. However, I feel that I reassured the student and was able to convey the disability in a good light. I also had trouble taking a good picture of Strandberg because he was difficult to get in touch with and meet to take pictures both during and after school. If I was able, I would replace the picture of him so that it was an action shot. Now seeing the piece in print, I wish that the story about Strandberg was more intriguing but I am still proud of the overall product.

I am proud of this picture because it shows action and fills the framce. It also has good color and lighting, which is difficult to get on the field when the sun is setting.

I am proud of this photo because it shows depth of field and is close to the subject. It also follows the rule of thirds and looks really good on the choir page.

I am proud of this picture because I had trouble getting a good dominant photo for the BBC page. I like this because you can see Merrie Grace Harding’s face in the television screen below and her filming the show. I also like this because it has good lighting and is clear.

As both a staff member and index editor, I feel that I have been an asset to the publication this year. I have worked independently, helped others and graded work in a timely matter. I have also made all but one of my deadlines this year and helped staffers who needed help on their deadlines. I also attended all of our mandatory out of school activities like Green-Up Boone, the Rummage Sale, Relay for Life and Distribution Day, I also stayed later on deadline day to help staffers meet deadlines before I had to go to work. The biggest contribution in the book I had this year was the Index, and making sure all quotes were correct and names were spelled right. I was committed to the staff because the book is something that students will hold onto and look back on, and it is a really amazing publication that I am proud to be a part of.

reflection 4

This past year has been difficult in both my personal life and sometimes as an editor. A hardship I faced was seeing my edits not being fixed on pages, even when they were small changes to names or how something was indexed. Having to go back and fix them myself, when changes were supposed to be made and perfect in majors, sometimes made me angry because I had made those edits for a specific reason. I learned that I needed to be on top of specific staffers to fix my edits, and double check pages to make sure names were spelled correctly in majors and proofs. I also learned to accept that when edits were not fixed and that I should not take personal offense. The biggest hardship I faced regarding staffers not fixing edits, was then having to go through and check the index list three times, to ensure that all students would be able to find their name spelled correctly in the book. I feel that I handled the situation well, as I made sure to check pages and ask staffers it there was any way I could help.

reflection 5

My first goal for the new semester was to meet all final deadlines. I had planned on using class time wisely and starting early on the index so that I would not be rushed, and making lists of what I needed to do to follow through. I feel that I fulfilled this goal by making lists and finishing everything on them on the days that I had planned. I was not rushed and I finished the index on time to ship. The second goal I set was to be more conscious of the time I have in class to use the period wisely. I wrote stories at home and spent class time doing things I could only do at school, like interviews and taking pictures. I met my final deadline and was mostly on time when turning things in during deadline. My final goal for the semester was being a better helper to staffers when I was asked. I thought I did this well, especially when other staffers wrote stories for the index and needed my help. I took more time to answer questions and help others who were behind on their deadlines. Overall, I feel that I fulfilled each of these goals.

Y23. IndexPages 419-436I chose the Index to represent me because it was the culmination of all my work this year, and is an important part of the book.

Y4. Academic WritingPages 56-57I chose this story because I think it is a good representation of an academic story, and my writing ability. It focused on the BBC program and it’s struggle to regain credibility.

Y7. SIdebar WritingPages 50-51I chose this sidebar because it shows a softer side of Dr. McMillen and explains her journey in training an assisstance dog.

Throughout the past three years on staff my ability to design and understand InDesign and Photoshop, has changed. This year I spent time working with actual designs during editor meetings when we started to build the library, and when I created the Index. Because of this, I felt like I had a better grasp on designing when I started to create my portfolio. My sophomore portfolio was thrown together last minute because I did not understand the importance of it, and really did not know how to start. I chose an easy brush and made every page look the same, because it was easiest to execute. For my junior portfolio, I tried to make a more professional portfolio by finding inspiration that I could duplicate and make my own. My reflections were also better and more in-depth. This year, I found that creating my portfolio was easier, and I had a better grasp on what needed to be done first and what was most time consuming. My writing has improved since my first year, and so has my design. Overall, I feel that I have improved much since my first year on staff and am able to complete a quality portfolio that I would be proud to use in a professional setting.
