by Gen. Frank GorencU.S. Air Forces in Europe- Air Forces Africa commander

A diverse force is our unique advan-tage in providing forward-based combat power for America.

Diversity of cultures, beliefs and ideas are ever-present in our pro-

fessional and personal lives. These differ-ences among Airmen make us more effec-tive.

I read a January Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa article about an Airman who exemplifies perseverance and resiliency and highlights the power of diversity.

Staff Sgt. Deng Pour is a religious affairs NCO who grew up in Sudan. As a child, he was surrounded by violence, but escaped on foot at the age of 5 to Ethiopia. For three months he ran from troops and bombs and survived by eating grass and mud.

Three years later, he returned to Sudan, but was subsequently sent to a refugee camp in northern Kenya.

At the age of 16 he came to the U.S. and lived with his aunt.

In 2006, an Air Force recruiter traveled three hours to meet Pour at his home in Minnesota and helped him transition into the military.

Whether the recruiter knew it or not, the ser-geant would become a unique asset during a deployment to Africa.

Now at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti, Pour’s personal experiences and knowledge of the region are a valuable advantage to the joint team. He is helping task force leadership under-stand customs and traditions of our partners in

the region. Pour offers a unique cultural bridge that a native American Airman can-not provide, and as the Air Forces Africa commander, I am thankful he joined the Air Force and is there serving.

You can read the full story at www.hoa.africom.mil/Story/7840/true-resilience-one-manrsquos-journey-from-south-sudan-to-american-airman.

Airmen from different cultures and back-grounds offer perspectives and solutions to challenges that may otherwise be overlooked.

Like Pour, I am a naturalized American citi-zen, and from experience, I can tell you embrac-ing diversity will help us remain the world’s greatest Air Force.

I encourage you to embrace diversity, which is critical to solving complex global problems. It is a cornerstone to the Air Force’s suc-cess. Continue to take advantage of the skills and talents of all Airmen. Remember our Air Force vision: The world’s greatest Air Force — powered by Airmen, fueled by innovation. Embracing diversity will help us achieve our vision.

“It surprised me what a difference carrying the weapon made on my run time,” said Spc. Shane Waite, intelligence analyst assigned to the 21st TSC. “I ran a good minute slower than normal.”

The competition then moved forward to day and night land navigation. The warriors were given a starting point and four eight-digit grid coordinates to find in an allotted time while wearing body armor and a helmet. During the night land navigation, competitors were only allowed to use a red-lens flashlight for illumi-nation.

“I was surprised that I found more of my points at night than I did during the day,” said 2nd Lt. Kathleen G. McDougal, operations officer with the 21st STB. “This has been a very fun experience. It is important for us as Soldiers to get out and perform our basic Soldier skills with some healthy competition.”

The second day of competition brought the crew-served weapons knowledge portion. Each Soldier aligned their sights on both the M-249 and M2 .50 caliber machine guns using the Engagement Skills Trainer on Panzer Kaserne.

The competitors also fought each other using modern Army combatives techniques on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. Soldiers sparred for six min-utes and received points for gaining the dominant position in the fight or for causing their opponent to tap out.

The third and fourth days of the Best Warrior competition took place on Smith Barracks in

Baumholder. The competing Soldiers com-pleted a grueling 12-mile ruck-march, demon-strated their knowledge of first-aid and combat life-saver techniques, and conducted a fire-under-stress weapons qualification range.

The final day of competition involved each warrior submitting an essay discussing sexual harassment in the Army, appearing in the Army service uniform before a board and engaging a member of the civilian media. After the day’s events were complete, the board members deliberated and tallied each Soldier’s score. The winners were announced during a ceremo-ny on Panzer Field that afternoon.

The 21st STB Best Warriors are: Spc. James Simo in the Soldier category, Sgt. Noel Phelps in the NCO category, and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Eric Christianson. Christianson was also the overall competition winner, with the most

points from the events.“I wanted to compete for my Soldiers, hopefully

to motivate my Soldiers and my NCOs to become better leaders,” said Christianson, airdrop sys-tems technician assigned to the 5th Quartermaster Company, 21st STB.

These Soldiers will continue on to the 21st TSC Best Warrior competition.

“We are fortunate to have an opportunity of this scale,” said Staff Sgt. Justin Hrusovsky, 435th Construction and Training Squadron fire and rescue contingency instructor. “Chances to build our core technical competencies but reaffirm our partnerships with NATO partners are critical in strengthening our overall force package.”

With one of only two active training facilities able to pro-vide such hands-on training, Ramstein looks to continue establishing international rela-tions through its Airmen.

“Training opportunities like these provide a necessary way for us to be prepared,” said Canadian air force Cpl. Ryan Ford, 9th Wing Gander water, fuels and environmen-tal technician. “We need to familiarize ourselves with NATO ally operations, but aid in familiarizing our allies with our operations to ensure successes in any environ-ment.”

With Silver Flag under their belts and confidence freshly shining through their minds, Airmen with the Canadian and American armed forces pre-pared themselves under one flag.

by Capt. Royal Reff10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command Public Affairs

There are currently four operational air and mis-sile defense commands in the U.S. Army. Three of them (the 10th, 32nd and 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Commands) are within the active-duty force. One, the 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, is in the Army National Guard.

The 10th AAMDC and 263rd AAMDC Soldiers had the opportunity to come together and conduct ballistic missile defense training over a two week period, culminating March 7.

Nearly 40 Soldiers with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 263rd AAMDC mobilized on Rhine Ordnance Barracks for annual training in support of 10th AAMDC ballistic missile defense exercise. The exercise brought together Airmen and Soldiers from across U.S. Army Europe and U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, helping them combine and hone their missile defense skills.

Lt. Col. Scott Joslin, operations officer with 263rd AAMDC and officer in charge of the mobi-lized troops, explained the challenges associated with preparing and deploying for the mission.

“The majority of our team was alerted near the end of January that we’d be flying to Germany to support the 10th (AAMDC) for this exercise,” Joslin said. “We had a lot to do and a short time to do it to make the trip happen, but everyone came together; we did what needed to be done, and every-one flew in on time.”

Joslin and the rest of his team served in critical observer-controller and behind-the-scenes trainer roles, training and testing the participants’ skills. Duties included overseeing execution of mission-related tasks and presenting training scenarios, called injects, all of which helped members of the 263rd receive valuable and realistic training.

Spc. Matt Hecko, early warning systems opera-tor, Sgt. Ben Bottoms, Air and Missile Defense crewmember, and Sgt. Cory Barrow, AMDC, served with the 263rd AAMDC for 10, 13 and five years, respectively, and made up a training cell that simu-lated battery and battalion-level subordinate units for the 10th AAMDC staff being trained.

“This is my first exercise of this kind, getting to see another side of air defense operations, since nor-mally we spend a lot of time in the field — on the ground,” Bottoms said.

Barrow agreed.

“It really has been a great experience with real-world scenarios we’ve been able to throw at these guys,” he said.

In addition to the long hours training with their 10th AAMDC counterparts, 263rd Soldiers had the opportunity to travel and enjoy the sights. They visited the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial in France and took a Rhine River cruise in Bingen.

“We rode the train a lot and celebrated (the Germany holiday) Fasching in Mannheim,” Hecko said. “It was nice to see people in costumes having fun.”

Spc. Christopher Anderson, early warning systems operator with the unit, said the Morale, Welfare and Recreation trips were a highlight of the stay.

“This was my first time in Germany, and I really like the culture and how friendly and helpful the people are,” he said.

Above all, the 263rd trainers were able to contrib-ute their expertise and time to support their fellow AAMDC soldiers during the exercise.

“Overall, it’s been a great event,” Joslin said. “Hopefully we’ll leave everyone with a sense of having supported and provided what was required.”

Kicking off its 17th year, more than 45 million students, educators and parents cele-brated Read Across America

in schools stateside and on military installations overseas. Read Across America week ran from March 3 to 7 at KMC schools and child develop-ment centers.

Using hands-on activities, children learned the power of reading and how it affects the overall learning process.

“Read Across America is always held around March 2 to celebrate the week of Dr. Seuss’ birthday,” said Pam Garrett, Ramstein Elementary School teacher. “All week the school has different themes for the children to dress up for and have different activities to go with our theme of ‘Sink Your Teeth Into Good Books All Year Long.’”

Throughout the week, people from around the community volunteered at elementary schools and CDCs to read and organize activities for students.

“We are so fortunate to have a lot of volunteers, from older students to spouses and military mem-bers, coming out to read to children and help set up different activities,” Garrett said.

Cheryl Woodruf, Ramstein Elementary School second-grade teacher, invited a special guest of her own to read to her class.

“Ms. Woodruf and her second-grade class were very kind to invite me. I appreciate it very much, and they selected the book for me to read,” said

Sharon Gorenc, wife of Gen. Frank Gorenc, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa com-mander. “I really enjoy Dr. Seuss, but I admit I had to practice reading the book first because, as you know, Dr. Seuss likes to put a lot of tongue twisters in his stories.”

With different themes for each day, such as, “Wear Green Monday” and “Cat in the Hat Thursday,” chil-dren at Ramstein Elementary School used hands-on techniques to celebrate the week. Each class also did activities such as making their own green eggs and ham.

“I think experiencing a book takes it to a whole other level,” Gorenc said. “Hands-on activities do just that, and actually eating green eggs and ham can make the story come alive. It makes a great impact on children, captures their imagination and

fosters even more love of reading.”Using different techniques to grasp

a child’s attention in a story is a char-acteristic that some praise Dr. Seuss for accomplishing. Having different words, some made up, that rhyme to keep the story going can grasp a child’s imagination so he/she can grow.

“What I think makes Dr. Seuss so unique is that he has a lot of rhythm and rhyming in his stories,” Gorenc said. “He’s very poetic, so it makes it fun to read. He also throws in a lot of crazy characters and words that I think make it capture a child’s imagi-nation.”

For a former teacher like Gorenc, showing children the power of a good education is a way of life.

“It’s really important to instill in young people a love of learning and

reading at an early age, because that’s when you can start building their confidence in learning,” Gorenc said. “I don’t teach anymore, but it’s who I am and what I wanted to do. I used my skills with my own children and still work with my granddaughters.”

Gorenc said she believes building a bond between children and the person teaching them during the celebration week is just the beginning.

“Read Across America is wonderful, but I think that it’s a start,” Gorenc said. “I believe that you should celebrate reading every week. If you can set aside reading time with your children, then make it fun, and sneak in a little bit of learning and confi-dence building.”

Through Read Across America week, KMC edu-cators showed children that reading and promoting education is for all ages at all times of the year.

LRMC to undergo Joint Commission SurveyLandstuhl Regional Medical Center, made

up of seven Army health clinics located in Germany, Belgium and Italy, and its health center in Italy, will undergo a rigorous on-site survey March 24 to 28.

A team of Joint Commission expert survey-ors will evaluate LRMC for compliance with standards of care specific to care provided to patients, including but not limited to provision of care, medical records, infection prevention and control, leadership, and medication man-agement.

Maintaining Joint Commission accredi-tation demonstrates the LRMC health care team’s commitment to the highest level of care for its patients and the community it serves. LRMC Commander Col. Judith Lee has three strategic priorities: casualty reception/wound-ed warriors; staff resiliency; and quality/access to care/patient satisfaction.

“LRMC makes a significant investment in the safety and quality of its services on a day-to-day basis from the top down,” said Col. Cathy Walter, chief of the LRMC Quality Management Division. “Joint Commission accreditation provides a framework to con-tinue to develop our high performance team and maintain a culture of excellence, sustain-ing safety and continually improving the care we provide.”

During the survey, the Joint Commission team will be conducting interviews with leadership, staff members and patients, val-idating critical processes and policies and observing how care is rendered in all settings. This survey also includes verifying the facil-

ity and equipment are safe for patient care delivery.

Hospitals seek Joint Commission accredita-tion because it: • Helps organize and strengthen patient

Soldiers from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command learned about the 86th Logistics Readiness Group’s mission during a visit to Ramstein March 7.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen and build partnerships between the 86th LRG and the 21st TSC through a tour highlighting the LRG’s vehicle operations and deploy-ment and distribution capabilities.

“These Soldiers are getting a full day of information on what the Logistics Readiness Group and two of our squadrons do,” said Col. Brooks B. Reese, 86th LRG commander. “These visits are important, because it builds a cross-talk between our two forces. The 21st (TSC) certainly understands ground logistics, but we can teach them about the air.”

Reese gave the Soldiers a briefing

on the mission and responsibilities of the LRG and their impact on the mis-sion on Ramstein. He showcased their role in munitions transport and stor-age, vehicle maintenance and readi-ness, issuing equipment and deploy-ment readiness. He concluded with an example of logistics importance.

“Do you know what a pilot is without logistical support?” Reese asked the audi-ence. “A pedestrian with a fancy jacket.”

The Soldiers then toured the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron deploy-ment distribution facility. Regardless of service branch, this facility can issue equipment and weapons, provide legal and financial support, and offer any other service a deploying service member may need. The facility staff are prepared to provide their services on short notice, said Air Force Airman 1st Class Vanessa R. Zapata, material management jour-neyman assigned to the 86th LRS.

“Anyone going on a deployment through Ramstein Air Base, including Army personnel, may end up in this facil-ity to draw equipment, so it is important

that they understand how we do things,” Zapata said. “If we all understand each other’s systems, it makes deployments and operations much simpler.”

From there, the group split into two. One group toured the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron, while the other toured the 86th LRS.

The 86th VRS tour covered all areas the squadron is responsible for. The First in Support detachment learned about all of the squadron’s processes from dispatching vehicles to mainte-nance procedures. They also toured several facilities, including the main-tenance bays and fabrication shop.

“We saw how they requisition parts and all of their specialty shops. It is very interesting to see how the Air Force performs all of these tasks within their organizations,” said Capt. Laura A. Hamilton, end items logis-tics management deputy for the 21st TSC. “All of the Air Force mainte-nance facilities are very specialized and streamlined.”

The group then toured the 86th

LRS Traffic Management Office warehouse. The facility is compa-rable to the Army Supply Sustainment Activity, where parts are stored and distributed to the requisitioning unit. The 86th LRS warehouse, however, services all units on Ramstein.

“The warehouse was huge. It is so large that the Air Force has robots to assist in moving parts from one part of the warehouse to the other,” Hamilton said. “Just like their vehicle mainte-nance, this is a more centralized and streamlined version of what we have in the Army.”

As the visit came to a close, the 86th LRG afforded their Army guests the chance to ask questions on their operations. As the First in Support delegation departed, all agreed the visit was a success.

“This visit was very beneficial for us. It definitely built the partnership between our branches,” Hamilton said. “I think we will all bring some lessons learned for logistics back to the 21st.”

1st CBCS keeps units connected, mission flowingThe 1st Combat Communications Squadron provides rapid deployable com-

munication and air traffic control abilities throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The unit also supports exercises, deployments, contingencies and special military projects as directed by U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa. Airmen from the 1st CBCS deploy, operate and maintain mobile com-munication and air traffic control and landing systems around the globe to keep units connected and missions flowing.

Editor’s note: Beards are not authorized unless for medical reasons when authorized by a commander on the advice of a medical official. If a commander authorizes, members will keep all facial hair trimmed not to exceed 1/4 inch in length. Individuals granted a shaving waiver will not shave or trim any facial hair in such a manner as to give a sculptured appearance.

Does it come in thick and full, or is it light and patchy? Will it shine as a glorious testament to your manliness, or timidly hide just below the sur-face? Regardless of the answer, there are only two questions every Airman needs to ask: How far are you willing to go? And, are you willing to become “bulletproof”?

Mustache March is a long-standing tradition for Airmen stemming from the Vietnam era, specifically from triple-ace fighter pilot Robin Olds. It is a month full of Airmen vying to be the fuzzy-faced champion, attempting to grow a garden on their upper-lip that would even make Burt Reynolds blush.

This year, Gen. Mark A. Welsh, U.S. Air Force chief of staff, issued

a challenge to all Airmen: put on your finest push-brooms, and roll out your crumb collectors. Air Force-wide Mustache March is on.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had an all-in Mustache March, have we?” Welsh said during his speech at the Air Force Association’s Air Warfare Symposium. “I’m putting the smack down on you guys, Air Force-wide Mustache March, MAJCOM compe-titions.”

Though regulations prohibit female Airmen from cultivating the same prickly cactus thorns as male Airmen, their role in Mustache March compe-titions is just as important. Beyond judging the competitors, deciding who looks the most like Tom Selleck with their glorious flavor-savers, female Airmen here are invited to design fake mustaches to be worn at the time of judging only.

Welsh also challenged female Airmen to take part in Mustache March by being creative and remem-bering why we celebrate the tradition.

According to legend, Olds start-ed the tradition while deployed in Vietnam. The “bulletproof mustache” began when fighter pilots jokingly believed it made their aircraft imper-vious to enemy fire.

Despite Air Force regulations against facial hair, Olds grew his

fuzzy caterpillar to epic proportions. Though he was violating the poli-cies, his act signaled a call for Airmen of all ranks to think for themselves, respectfully question the status-quo and to fight as a team for what they believe in.

“Generals visiting Vietnam would kind of laugh at the mustache,” said Olds in a previous interview. “I was far away from home. It was a gesture of defiance. The kids on base loved it. Most everybody grew a mustache.”

After returning from the war, Olds quickly became aware that even though his deviation from the norm boosted the morale of Airmen in Vietnam, his bushy handlebars would not be tolerated back home.

“I remember my first interview with (Air Force Chief of Staff Gen.

John P.) McConnell,” Olds said. “I walked briskly through the door, stopped and snapped a salute. He walked up to me, stuck a finger under my nose and said, ‘Take it off,’ and I said, ‘Yes, sir!’ And that was the end of that.”

Today, Airmen continue to upset their spouses and significant others by honoring Olds’ maverick attitude and meticulously waxed soup strainer. Unlike Olds though, maintaining the standards is a very important part of Mustache March. With a great mus-tache comes great responsibility, and Airmen must follow the guidelines in Air Force Instruction 36-2903, Dress and Appearance.

Section 3.1.2.2. states, “... male Airmen may have mustaches; how-ever, they will be conservative (mod-erate, being within reasonable lim-its, not excessive or extreme) and will not extend downward beyond the lip line of the upper lip or extend sideways beyond a vertical line drawn upward from both corners of the mouth.”

The gauntlet was thrown, and the battle for the dirtiest lip-duster is on. Air Force-wide, Airmen were asked to wear their impenetrable stache armor with pride, regardless of how grotesque it may look. Do you have what it takes to be ‘bulletproof’?

Ceremony marks allied achievement in Romaniaby Sgt. Maj. Michael Pintagro21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU AIR BASE, Romania — Maj. Gen. John R. O’Connor, command-ing general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, and Air Force Maj. Gen. Laurian Anastasof, chief of the Romanian air force staff, marked a major com-bined joint achievement and launched a new level of mission capability during a ceremony Feb. 28 in the new passenger transit facility here.

The event was attended by approximately 100 allied personnel, punctuated by speeches from the senior leaders and topped with a ceremonial ribbon-

cutting executed with a pair of gigantic novelty scis-sors. The event celebrated the achievement of “full operational capability” at the newly constructed facility.

“The establishment of the transit center at Mihail Kogălniceanu strengthens an effective network of capabilities protecting the interests of the U.S. and our allies,” O’Connor said. “Our partnership helps to shape the region, build trust and provide critical capabilities to our combatant commanders as the mission in Afghanistan winds down.

“Romania and the United States have partnered effectively for decades, because our nations believe that such partnerships bring long-term mutual ben-efits for regional security and strengthen the NATO

alliance,” he continued. “The establishment of Transit Center MK in such a short period reaffirms that assertion.”

Anastasof followed O’Connor to the podium. Like his American counterpart, the chief of staff emphasized international cooperation and the strength of the U.S.-Romanian partnership.

“Both NATO and strategic partnership commit-ments of the Romanian air force, as well as the path we have chosen to meet them, give expression to our solidarity and determination to successfully complete joint projects, such as this one on the ben-efit of peace, freedom and democracy,” Anastasof

Pay attention, protect personal propertyby Sara Pavich86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The KMC is known as a safe community overall. However, there are instances of crime affecting the homes and property of service members and their families.

Because of this, it is necessary to know and practice safe habits in order to keep homes, valuables and family safe.

Staff Sgt. Elio Carrion, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron operations NCOIC, said many thefts and burglaries occur when valuables are left unse-cured. Open windows or unlocked doors can attract unwanted visitors who search for easy opportunities to enter homes.

Situational awareness is key to keeping homes and valuables safe, said Staff Sgt. Joel Reyes Rodriguez, 569th USFPS police services NCOIC. In many cases of home burglaries, offenders moni-tor a house for some time and understand the home-owner’s schedule and habits.

“They learn your routine,” Rodriguez said. “They know when you leave for work and when you return, if you lock your door or if you don’t, or where you hide your spare key. They see all that, so it’s important to be aware of your surround-ings.”

Homes become especially vulnerable when fami-lies leave town for an extended amount of time. Rodriguez said indicators, such as piled-up mail and overgrown lawns, can spotlight homes as potential targets. To prevent issues while on vacation, home-owners can invest in timed or motion sensor lights for their homes, or ask neighbors to collect mail and watch the house.

Homeowners must also be aware of poten-tial schemes that may endanger their property. Rodriguez said homeowners should never let unknown solicitors into their homes. In some cases, sales people may have ulterior motives when they enter a house.

“They’re trying to pitch a sale, but really they’re scoping out the valuables in your house,” Rodriguez said. “One glance, and they see every-thing.”

Homeowners should never let solicitors enter their homes without certainty of legitimacy. Carrion said if a solicitor refuses to give the information of the parent company, there is a good chance he is not working lawfully.

Service members’ vehicles are at a higher risk for break-ins when there are indicators the owners are American.

“As Americans, we like to show off our cars,” Rodriguez said. “But having multiple bumper stick-

ers or GPS devices in plain sight can make a vehicle a target.”

Carrion and Rodriguez agree that most service members’ vehicles that are broken into have these types of attention-attracting signs. Keeping a vehi-cle clear of noticeable indicators and making sure the vehicle is in a safe place may lessen the chance it will be spotted as a valuable target.

“When you get out of your vehicle, take an extra couple seconds to lock your car,” Carrion said. “Do a quick look-around, and if you see something sus-picious, report it.”

In Germany, it is the law that vehicles remain locked when owners are not present. Failure to lock a vehicle may result in a ticket from German Polizei.

Carrion said one of the most effective ways service members can protect their homes and belongings is to establish relationships with neigh-bors.

“If you live off base, introduce yourself to all your neighbors, German and American,” Carrion said. “If you build a rapport, there’s a better chance your neighbors will report suspicious activity if they see it.”

317th SMC Soldiers awarded for maintenance excellenceby Brandon Beach21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

For the second year in a row, Soldiers from the 317th Support Maintenance Company took home the U.S. Army Europe Army Award for Maintenance

Excellence for competition year 2013. The 143-Soldier unit, part of the 21st Theater

Sustainment Command, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 16th Special Troops Battalion, was presented with the award in the Medium Unit Active-Army category during a ceremony March 7 on Smith Barracks in Baumholder.

“It’s a great competition,” said Capt. Erik Amstutz, 317th SMC commander. “(AAME) lets us display our abilities and lets us get that con-structive criticism we need to improve. We want to put ourselves out there against the best, so we can continue to strive to be the best.”

Presenting the award to six Soldiers from the Baumholder-based field maintenance unit was Maj. Gen. John O’Connor, 21st TSC command-ing general.

Most notably, 317th Soldiers were recognized

for completing more than 25,000 field-level maintenance repairs in 2013, as well as requisi-tioning and issuing more than 30,000 repair parts. The unit’s logistical reach crosses multiple bor-ders, supporting up to 54 customer units through-out Germany, Italy and parts of Africa.

While 317th Soldiers took home Europe’s top maintenance award, they also won at the 21st Theater Sustainment Command-level for the third year in a row.

“When we focus on the AAME, nothing can stop us,” Amstutz said. “That’s what we did in order to get ready for the 21st inspection and the USAREUR inspection. Unfortunately, we were not picked up to get inspected by the Department of the Army, but we’re going to try again this year.”

The 21st TSC runner-up winner was the Grafenwöhr-based 1st Inland Cargo Transfer Company.

AAME is one part of the annual Combined Logistics Excellence Awards Program, known as CLEA, which honors the top units that have contributed significantly to Army readiness in the fields of maintenance, deployment and supply.

said. “The notable accomplishments in theaters of opera-tions clearly show the benefits of military cooperation, such as between the U.S. and Romania, guided by the principle, ‘we train together — we fight together.’”

The establishment of the new transit center supports broad-er national and international objectives, O’Connor said.

“This mission is part of a larger strategic aim to respon-sibly withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan — a commit-ment the U.S. and our NATO allies and partners made to the government of Afghanistan as it moves toward full security responsibility this year,” he said. “This expanded joint and combined transit center provides European Command with the capability and capacity to process forces at the velocity required by Central Command.”

The MK team that oversaw the construction of the new facilities and organization of the expanded air transit mis-sion views the achievement of full operational capability as an important marker en route to mission accomplishment and transition to steady state operations.

“FOC means we can process the maximum planning capacity of 2,000, in terms not only of airfield capability and personnel processing — which includes customs, secu-rity and a variety of considerations beyond the flights them-selves — but also life-support facilities,” said Col. Michael C. Snyder, 21st TSC deputy commanding officer and officer in charge of the Regional Support Element.

Event organizers accomplished their own delicate miracle — a combined joint ceremony while simultaneously pro-cessing a precedent-shattering 11 separate transit flights and redeploying the first major rotation of administrative staff. U.S. Airmen, Marines and Soldiers of all components, as well as key Romanian leaders and military personnel, con-ducted the ceremony in the newly constructed transit facility as redeploying troops cleared customs in an adjacent build-ing created by TSC engineers and partners. Remarkably, facility cadre assembled materials for the event, conducted rehearsals and executed the ceremony without postponing a single transit mission by as much as a minute.

“The DCO said mission is still first, and we kept our priorities straight the whole time,” said Sgt. Maj. Robert Hickson, RSE sergeant major. “He was very clear he did not want the ceremony to take anything away from normal operations. The transit facility is the whole reason we’re here, and we didn’t want anyone losing focus on that mis-sion, even for a day.”

Hickson also emphasized the prevailing spirit of joint, combined collaboration.

“It was just amazing how the U.S. Army and Air Force and the Romanian air force came together as a team to make this a dignified and respectful ceremony that perfectly served its purpose,” he said. “We couldn’t have accomplished any of this without working together. The Romanians worked with us every step of the way; there are a lot of moving parts to a ceremony with distinguished visitors from two differ-ent countries, but we made it happen. The soldiers and the airmen — both American and Romanian — were all very motivated and did everything they could to make the whole event a success.”

The transit center, constructed by Soldiers of the 902nd Engineer Company (Vertical), part of the 21st TSC’s 15th Eng. Battalion, 18th Eng. Brigade, provides essential logis-tical, transportation, reintegration, and morale and welfare services, accommodating the flow of American service members into and out of European and Central Asian oper-ating areas through the end of 2014 or the completion of current missions.

The temporary facility accommodates, at peak, around 2,000 transiting personnel. An enduring contingent of around 350 service members and civilians operates the passenger transit center, administers facilities and provides services.

2014 AER campaign kicks offStory and photo by Staff Sgt. Warren W. Wright Jr.21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz offi-cially kicked off the 2014 Army Emergency Relief fundraising campaign during a luncheon March 4 at the Landstuhl Community Club on Wilson Barracks.

AER is a private, nonprofit organization first incorporated in 1942 in order to provide emer-gency financial assistance to Soldiers and their families through the contributions of others.

The keynote speaker of the event, Maj. Gen. John R. O’Connor, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, expressed his gratitude toward the AER coor-dinators and their efforts in putting together the campaign.

“There is no better way to show we are Army strong than by Soldiers helping Soldiers,” O’Connor said. “AER is the cornerstone to helping our Soldiers and their families with financial assistance during the toughest of times.

“It’s Soldiers helping Soldiers - being a bat-tle buddy off of the battle field - and it works through the act of giving first,” he continued. “This spirit of giving and kindness is at the heart of all of us who call the Kaiserslautern Military Community home.”

This year, organizers of the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz AER campaign hope to surpass their goal of $120,000 after greatly exceeding last year’s goal by more than $20,000.

“Last year, our AER campaign goal was $100,000, and we ended up raising over $123,000, an increase of over 73 percent from the previous year,” said Col. Bryan D. DeCoster, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander. “I believe we can exceed this (year’s) goal and educate our community members in the process.”

To date, AER funds have assisted more than 3.2 million Soldiers and their family

members with more than $1 billion in aid.“Last year, AER helped 444 Soldiers in

our community with over half a million dol-lars in assistance to include $500 comfort grants for each qualifying wounded warrior at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center,” DeCoster said. “These warriors arrived with only the clothes on their back, and this helped them get items to make their recovery more comfortable.”

O’Connor said reaching the goal can be easy. “To reach this year’s goal, the (more than

50,000) Americans living in the KMC would need to contribute just $2.72. That equals a mere 3 cents a day for 75 days for a member of the KMC to contribute to AER,” he said.

AER receives all of its contributions through Soldiers, civilians and family members. This year’s campaign slogan, “Army Emergency Relief: A Soldier’s first choice. Soldiers help-ing Soldiers and their families yesterday, today and tomorrow,” reflects the commitment of the Army when it comes to taking care of its own.

“Army Emergency Relief is there to catch all of us, including our retiree population, in that time of crisis and personal need,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Kenneth J. Kraus Jr., command sergeant major of USAG Rheinland-Pfalz.

“For those who donate every year and never find a need to use it, I thank you for your con-tinued dedication and contributions to other Soldiers,” DeCoster said. “For those who do need it, please use it. Use it in the emergen-cies when you need to. And then when you’re capable of donating as well, donate in a manner that you can afford to help other Soldiers who will be in your spot in the future.”

The Army-wide AER fund campaign runs until May 15. Those interested in contribut-ing may do so by contacting their local AER representative or by sending contributions to the AER national headquarters. Additionally, unsolicited donations are accepted at any time by mail or online at www.aerhq.org.

Not only Irish observe St. Patrick’s Day Mondayby Petra Lessoing86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Irish celebrate a national and religious holiday Monday — St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick’s Day is a day to honor Ireland’s first Christian missionary. March 17 is also an official holiday in Northern Ireland, the British overseas territory of Montserrat and the Canadian province of Newfoundland. But even in many other countries, Irish emigrants and even non-Irish celebrate the day with fes-tivals, parades and other events.

The St. Patrick’s Day custom came to America in 1737. The first parade with 770 participants was held in 1843 in Chicago. Today, more than 100 U.S. cities hold St. Patrick’s Day parades, the largest of which is in New York City.

In Germany, the Irish in Munich hold a St. Patrick’s Day parade starting at noon Sunday from Münchner Freiheit leading to Odeonsplatz. At 12:45 p.m., a shamrock will be blessed and dignitaries will hold speeches before an after parade party with entertainment program will continue until 5:30 p.m.

St. Patrick was not Irish. He was reportedly born in Scotland around 385 near the town of Dumbarton. His real name is believed to be Maewyn Succat, and his parents belonged to a Roman family of high rank.

Patrick lived a normal life for 16 years before he was captured by pirates and forced into slavery in Ireland. He was never inter-ested in God or the church, but being away from home and all alone, he turned to God and learned to pray while herding sheep. After being a slave for six years, Patrick dreamed that God told him it was time to go home.

So he escaped on foot across 200 miles of unknown land. After an adventurous sea voy-age, he finally returned home.

A couple of months later he visited St. Martin’s monastery at Tours and the island sanctuary of Lerins. Patrick placed himself under the guidance of a bishop, St. Germain. Several years later he promoted to the priest-hood. He engaged in missionary works and after the bishop recommended Patrick to the Pope, he traveled to Rome. Pope Celestine entrusted Patrick with the mission of bring-ing Christianity to Ireland. Since he learned the Celtic language during his years of slav-ery, it was easy for him to spread the word of Christianity. He conquered one kingdom after another and destroyed Paganism. Despite sev-eral death threats, Patrick baptized, confirmed, preached and built churches, schools and mon-asteries. St. Patrick was even arrested several times, but escaped each time. He succeeded in converting almost the entire population of the island.

Patrick died on March 17, 461, in Downpatrick, Ireland. That’s why St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated March 17.

Local club hosts Pfennig Bazaarby Ina FranzrebU.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

The Pfennig Bazaar, the big-gest nonprofit flea market in the region, opened March 7 at the Gartenschau event hall.

Organized by the German-American and International Women’s Club Kaiserslautern, it’s the 53rd bazaar of its kind. Proceeds from the annual event are donated to local German and American organizations.

“This is the highlight of the club year. It is so important because we believe in support-ing our community,” said GAIWC president Christine Schneider. “Last year, we donated to the Fisher Houses in Landstuhl and a German orphanage.”

The club raises about €35,000 annually and donates to different projects. Organizations can apply for donations on the club’s website.

At the bazaar, various second-hand items from household goods to clothing to dec-orations were offered at low prices. Two

hours before closing on Sunday, attendees received special offers, such as three pants for 50 euro cents. At that time, roughly 300 visitors were still there, but hundreds more attended.

The club started collecting items for the bazaar six months ago. Many of the club’s 200 members contributed to the bazaar. Some donated a treat for the cake buffet. Others helped with the setup and the sales.

“We are all volunteers and donate items and our time,” said Schneider, who is mar-ried to a U.S. Air Force retiree and has two daughters. “We have people who have been in the club for 50 years and they still come and help.”

The club’s goal is to neutralize the under-standing of the cultural difference between nations, Schneider said.

“The club has been existing for 58 years,” Schneider said. “We invite everybody who is willing to volunteer and to contribute.”

New BeginningsIt is o en said that a church is only as good as the Pastor that watches over it. At New Beginnings International Christian Center, this certainly holds true. Robert Hussey or Pastor Hussey, as he is professionally referred to, is a native of Philadelphia, Pa. He served in the United States Army for 31 years retiring as a Command Sergeant Major. In 1985 he accepted his call to preach the Gospel while serving in Neu Ulm, Germany. Pastor Hussey believes in his congregation and his passion is serving the people and seeing them move into their purpose. Balance is one of his watch words and keeping godly priorities in perspective such as God, Family and Church. e Ministry was started in June 2002 by Bishop Kevin O. Empowering, enabling women worldwideby Senior Airman Hailey Haux86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

W omen in America have an interesting history. From not being able to

contribute anything to the government to having a female secretary of state, and from not having women in the military to having women attain the rank of general, the U.S. has come a long way as a nation.

To celebrate the achievements of women, March is designated as Women’s History Month with activi-ties to empower women around the nation.

“It should be a celebration every day,” said Senior Master Sgt. Amber Mitchell, Kisling NCO Academy commandant. “It’s good that we pick a month, but we should celebrate our differences every day, because when we recognize our differences we also recognize there are strengths to bring to the table. Every day, I am proud to be a woman in the mili-tary.”

Being wowed every day by Airmen and what they accomplish for the mission is what Mitchell said

she looks forward to on a regular basis.

“In my 16 years, just the fact that we still have firsts is amazing,” said the Kentucky native. “It tells me we are moving in the right direction, but it also tells me we still have a way to go.

“One of the coolest parts of my job is I get to hang out with our international partners. They don’t have the same views we do when it comes to women in the military,” Mitchell continued. “When interna-tional partners come to see the Kisling NCO Academy and see how the U.S. does (Professional Military Education), they get to see my face, and that’s kind of cool. It may not change the way their countries do business, but if anything else, they have my face to put with the United States Air Force.”

With all the achievements of women, there are many females who have paved the way for others to live out their dreams.

“It’s great to be able to look up to women who have gone before us,” said Col. Denette Sleeth, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces

Africa space forces director. “Take the (Women Airforce Service Pilots). They said, ‘We want to do this,’ and they did. As a female in the Air Force, you have to look up to those women who took that step and made things happen.”

Having those women to look up to and having a positive role model to converse with every day can mean the world to some Airmen.

“Master Sgt. Liz Bolin, who is now deceased, was my first female influence when I came into the Air Force,” Mitchell said. “Right away, even when I was in training, she was dedicated to me and made sure I felt welcome, made sure I was doing what I was supposed to and corrected me when I needed it, but she did it in a helping way. That time she gave meant the world to me.”

Women were given many oppor-tunities over the years, allowing them to do just about any job they wish.

“The Air Force has made an effort to level the playing field for women, and that’s a great thing,” Sleeth said. “I love the fact more jobs are opening up for women. I, for example, was a

group commander at a launch wing and got to launch rockets for a living. How awesome is that? If someone is capable of doing a job, they should be given the chance. Who cares if it’s a woman?”

As a woman, being true to yourself and being unafraid to ask questions and learn can be just as empower-ing as having someone to look up to, Mitchell said.

“We’re more comfortable with our role as women in the Air Force now, because we are Airmen warriors and have answered our nation’s call just like anybody else and that’s impor-tant,” Mitchell said.

Woman’s History Month offers sev-eral things for females in the military to think about, not only this month, but for the rest of their lives.

“Women should follow their dreams. If there is something you want to do, go for it, and don’t let anything stop you,” Sleeth said. “Women were given some oppor-tunities earlier on, and it’s good to show women today what we have accomplished in the past and show them that if there is a barrier, break it down!”

He used it in his ser-mons to represent how the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit could all exist as sep-arate elements of the same entity. His followers adopt-ed the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day.

Finding a four-leaf clover on St. Patrick’s Day is sup-posed to bring double the good luck. Kissing the Blarney Stone supposedly brings the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence. The stone is set in the wall of the castle tower in the Irish village of Blarney. It is hard to reach. It’s between the main castle wall and the parapet. Kissers have to lie on their back and bend over backward, holding iron bars for support. The origins of the Blarney Stone’s magi-cal properties aren’t clear, but one legend says an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward a king who had saved her from drowning.

Also associated with the Irish holiday are leprechauns. Otherwise known as Irish fairies, leprechauns are small, unsociable, unfriendly men, who live alone. They are dressed like shoemakers, with a cocked hat and a leather apron. Legend says they pos-sess a hidden pot of gold. If the leprechaun is caught by a treasure hunter, he must tell him the location of the pot. If the leprechaun can trick the hunter and vanish, all hopes of finding the treasure are lost.

The color green is asso-ciated with St. Patrick’s Day because it is the color of spring, a shamrock and a color in Ireland’s flag. In many countries, people wear something green. School chil-dren started a tradition of their own — pinching classmates who forgot to wear green.

by Senior Airman Jonathan Stefanko86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Since Carsen Chun was a child he had always been athletic, participating in any sport presented to him with the dream to one day take part in the Olympics.

Now, after years of hard work and determination that vision may finally become a reality for this Airman.

Joining the Air Force with hopes to grow as a leader and an athlete, 1st Lt. Carsen Chun, 86th Munitions Squadron material flight commander, took advan-tage of every opportunity to improve himself.

“I have always had a love for sports from basketball to swimming. I did it all,” Chun said. “So when I found out there was a handball club at the Air Force Academy, I joined immediately.”

Handball consists of two teams of seven play-ers, passing a ball to and from with the intention of throwing the ball in the opposing team’s goal.

“Handball is a lot like soccer except you get to use your hands,” Chun said. “It is a very fast-paced and challenging sport, which is why I took to it so quickly. It’s everything I enjoy.”

After graduating the academy, the Hawaiian native received orders to Ramstein where he con-tinued his passion of playing handball across Europe.

“I love everything I do at the munitions squadron as well as in handball, and I was worried I would have to give up the sport to do my job,” Chun said.

“While both require a lot of my time, with a little management and determina-tion it all worked out in the end.”

Feeling confident in his ability, Chun submitted an application to the World Class Athlete Program, which would be his first step toward competing in the Olympics.

The Air Force WCAP is a two-year program that provides active-duty per-sonnel the opportunity to train and com-pete at national and international sports competitions with the ultimate goal of selection to the U.S. Olympic team.

“Being selected for the athlete program is a huge accomplishment,” Chun said. “To be able to represent not only the Air Force but the people who have supported me along the way means a lot, and I will try my hardest to make them proud.”

The WCAP will send Chun back to America where he will train at least five days a week and compete in several national and interna-tional events for two years, preparing him for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Though it was a long and bumpy road, the Air Force athlete is a step closer to making his dream of winning a medal at the Olympics a reality.

‘Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right’by Maj. Risa RiepmaLandstuhl Regional Medical Center Nutrition Care Division

What does the slogan “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right” mean to you?

Consumer research has found the taste of food is more important to con-sumers than nutrition content in terms of making food choices. How do we enjoy the taste of food and still eat healthy or “right?” Believe it or not, it can be done.

A habit many Americans have that affects both the way they taste and enjoy food, as well as the portions consumed, is the speed at which they eat. How much attention is given to the experience of eating itself is also a factor.

Many may notice that dining out in

Europe takes longer than in America. This can be multifactorial, but it is a known fact that Europeans value the eating and social experience when dining out and set aside time to fully engage in it.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to indicate how well you enjoy and taste food:• Do you find yourself eating in a

hurry or on the run? • Does it take you less than 20 min-

utes to finish a meal?• Do you often eat standing up or

in your car?• Do you consistently eat alone?Studies have shown that those who

eat too quickly are more likely to overeat. It takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to send signals of full-ness to the brain. Eating too quickly can often result in excessive calories

consumed and an unsatisfied feeling a short time later. The same is true for eating while standing or at other loca-tions other than a table.

Something you can try to enhance your eating experience and eat more healthy may include eating meals at a designated spot at home, preferably the kitchen table. Putting your fork down and taking a sip of water in between bites will also encourage you to slow down.

Enjoying the taste of food can also mean being more open to adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Many times we get into repetitive patterns when we eat the same things over and over. If our food choices are not low fat or low in sodium, it can result in an unhealthy eating pat-tern.

Making a point to seek out low fat,

low sodium and high fiber recipes and food items can expand your taste palate and encourage healthier eating habits. The old saying “don’t knock it until you’ve tried it” still applies. It is never too late to begin eating more healthy.

National Nutrition Month, celebrat-ed annually in March, is a nutrition education and information campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly known as the American Dietetic Association. The campaign focuses on making informed food choices and develop-ing sound physical activity and eating habits. This year’s slogan for National Nutrition Month is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.”

For questions on nutrition classes and services offered at LRMC, call 486-8229 or 06371-86-8229.
