Aloha,

From the day Kaiser Permanente first planted its roots in Hawaii way back in 1958, we have had the privilege to learn from and grow with our island community, striving to meet each generation’s evolving needs. Our dedication to the total health of Hawaii has naturally extended our efforts beyond the walls of medicine and into the communities where we live.

In our close-knit islands, a single gesture of kindness can trigger a ripple effect that benefits family, friends, and neighbors. At Kaiser Permanente, we believe that each grant, each collaboration, and each partnership can amplify these ripples into waves of substantial change — waves that will enhance the lives of people in our local communities for generations to come.

This report highlights just some of the work we embarked upon in 2013 to support research, education, and training initiatives; promote healthier diets and physical activity; and make our communities safer and healthier places to live.

Our communities are filled with leaders and organizations who believe, as we do, that everyone has a right to total health. We are honored to be working with such partners to build a healthier Hawaii.

Kaiser Permanente believes that everyone has a fundamental right to good health. Helping communities of Hawaii achieve this is not just our goal, it’s our responsibility.

In 2013, we poured our charitable efforts into touching the lives of more than 400,000 people in the islands by sharing our research, physicians, facilities, and expertise. Perhaps most importantly, we share ourselves. Our employees create ripples of positive change by frequently volunteering their time, talents, and passions for the good of others.

We are grateful for the opportunities to connect with new community partners to work together in delivering total health to Hawaii’s people.

Kaiser Permanente’s experience in commissioning the groundbreaking 2010 Community Voices on Health, the first needs assessment completed for the entire state of Hawaii, proved to be valuable in providing key guidance in another ambitious project: the 2013 Hawaii Hospitals Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA).

Every charitable hospital in the country is required to submit a CHNA. Kaiser Permanente helped Hawaii become one of only two states that conducted a collaborative statewide CHNA with all its hospitals.

“Kaiser Permanente was instrumental in the statewide collaboration by sharing what Kaiser was already doing in other states with the Healthcare Association of Hawaii and actively participating in shaping a Hawaii model. Kaiser set the tone for collaboration and moving ‘upstream’ toward prevention and improving our shared communities’ health. After developing the CHNA, Kaiser has been actively engaged in meeting with stakeholders to collaborate for healthy communities.”

~ George Greene, Esq., HAH president and CEO

Every hospital in Hawaii now uses these important findings to plan community benefit efforts and address the top priorities that were identified: chronic disease prevention and behavioral health, health inequity, and access to quality care.

MAKING A SPLASH IN SCHOOLS

Kaiser Permanente partners with leading national organizations on Thriving Schools — a comprehensive effort to create a culture of health and wellness for students, staff, and teachers in K-12 schools.

Keeping our keiki healthy has always been a priority for us. With Thriving Schools, we’re deepening our involvement in the health and wellness of schools by forming partnerships that make good health a way of life for the next generation.

FIRE UP YOUR FEETKaiser Permanente partnered with the National PTA and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership to increase physical activity and combat the childhood obesity epidemic with the Fire Up Your Feet program.

Students and their families who “laced up” (registered and logged healthy activities online) could help their K-8 school earn funds to support their schools’ health and wellness goals. All elementary and middle schools in each of the four major counties — Honolulu, Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai — were eligible to compete for first place awards of $1,000 and second place awards of $500 in their county. In 2013, six schools won challenge awards.

We partnered with Hawaii 5210 Let’s Go to support the 34th Annual Windward District Fitness Meet at Castle High School.

PLAY WITH PURPOSEPlayworks’ evidence-based curriculum features daily recess and activity programs, youth leadership initiatives, after-school programs, developmental sports leagues, and educator training programs on the importance of play. We piloted the program in nine schools in the Castle complex area of Oahu with the support of the Hawaii Department of Education, the Department of Health, school principals, and the complex area superintendent. Playworks is already changing attitudes toward exercise and healthy eating, and we plan to help expand the program to even more schools in the future.

Staff and students of Kaneohe Elementary School cheer each other on in Playworks’ structured play curriculum.

PEOPLEMental health for our keiki

Total health means just that, and the Primary Care Initiative (PCI) initiative supports the development of primary care and behavioral health integration for children and youth in Hawaii. We helped implement this project with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division and Hawaii Primary Care Association to benefit 14 community health centers.

Diabetes prevention in Waianae

We are supporting the collective impact efforts of a diabetes prevention project in Waianae to address the high health disparity of diabetes in leeward Oahu.

“The funding from Kaiser Permanente is allowing the ‘alliance’ of several public and private community stakeholders and the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center to plan a community-based collective impact project to prevent diabetes in Waianae Coast communities and determine feasibility.”

~ Dr. May Okihiro, Waianae Coast Comprehensive Center pediatrician and Hawaii Initiative for Childhood Obesity Research and Education (HICORE) director

POLICYHawaii Public Health Institute

We helped launch Hawaii’s first public health institute in partnership with the Hawaii State Department of Health and public health stakeholders with technical support from the National Network of Public Health Institutes. The institute will work to improve public health by fostering innovation; leveraging resources; and building partnerships across government agencies and local communities.

PATH: Mayor’s Active Living Advisory Council

Through a $48,000 grant to Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii (PATH), we helped establish the Mayor’s Active Living Advisory Council in Hawaii County to help promote active living strategies. Our grant also leverages $25,000 in county funds for bike education programs that will directly benefit more than 1,000 Big Island students.

PLACEFarm fresh food where we live

We wanted to expand access to fresh, local, healthy food for those who use financial assistance to purchase groceries — so we did. On the Big Island, we’ve partnered with the Kohala Center, and now eight farmers markets accept electronic benefits transfer (EBT). We hope to see this trend spread to Oahu as we work with the City and County of Honolulu and State of Hawaii to determine the best way to accept EBT in City-run farmers markets.

EBT acceptance at farmers markets helps to make fresh, healthy, and locally grown foods affordable in low-income areas.
