Reading with Rotary

Delightful Kolo dancers

In teddy bear heaven

Dargaville Rotary president Brian Burnett helps Jahzyah Pumipi as part of the Reading in School’s programme. “We knew there was a demand for people to help students with reading so we approached the school and they supported it,” he says. The school chooses children they believe will benefit from the one on one interaction and the volunteers assist with their reading and comprehension skills, improving each child’s confidence.

The Auckland Dalmatian Cultural Society Kolo group performed a showcase of traditional folk dances at the Dargaville club. “The evening was a great success with a colourful display of dances and a narration of the Dalmatian history,” says organiser Lynn Curac. “The trip was made extra special for our guests and they were escorted on a guided tour of the gumdiggers cave and the Museum. They learnt of our past history in the Kaipara as part of their Northland tour.”

“A fabulous day was had by all at the annual Maungaturoto teddy bears picnic,” says organiser Imogen McLeod. “It was great to have the community pull together and make the day such a success. We would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who donated all the prizes for their support, making it such a memorable day for all who attended.”

Welcome from the president“On behalf of the Northland Field Days Committee, I would like to extend a big welcome to all our exhibitors and visitors to Northland and our event,” says Lew Duggan, President of Northland Field Days.

Last year we proudly awarded $10,500 worth of scholarship funding from event proceeds to young agricultural students to assist them with their career goals and again this year we have pledged $10,000 of event proceeds to be awarded as a ‘to be decided investment’ aligned with rural education, development or research.

Lew Duggan, president of Northland Field Days

So on behalf of the Field Days’ committee and all of our sponsors, partners and associates, I hope you all experience a great time and enjoy what we have on offer and wish you all a very successful and safe 2015.

Networking strategies for women by Joanne Speechly

Local business women are invited to a networking workshop to be held in Dargaville next week.

Hosted by the ANZ, the workshop will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of women in business and examine ways of leveraging strengths to network effectively and generate growth.

“There is growing evidence that women are over-represented in low turnover businesses and under-represented in high turnover businesses,” says ANZ business training manager Vicki Canestri.

“A major challenge for many women is finding the time to network while trying to balance the responsibilities of running a business and a home. There is also a confidence issue and many women are reluctant to promote themselves.

“The workshop reinforces the need for networking and how it can help to grow a business. We also run through some simple tips before giving attendees the opportunity to practice those skills in a speed networking session.”

ANZ business training manager Vicki Canestri says there is often a reluctance among women to promote themselves. This workshop reinforces the need for networking and how it can help to grow a business

Women in Business — Networking will be held at the ANZ Bank on Tuesday, March 3, from 5.30pm. Register online at www.anz.co.nz/bizhub.

“This is a workshop that will create a few laughs and make you braver to take on the world. All women who want to grow their business, generate sales, increase referrals and create relationships are welcome to attend.”

Chain keeps it local by Ayla Miller

Two schools and a community group will soon be benefiting from the fundraising tokens collected as part of the Bag for Good campaign at The Warehouse in Dargaville.

Selwyn Park School, Tangowahine School and the Northern Wairoa Soccer Club will be reaping the rewards, thanks to a system that sees customers vote with tokens for groups to receive funding from The Warehouse.

Tangowahine School is hoping to buy new computers for their students whilst the Northern Wairoa Soccer Club needs new equipment. Selwyn Park School will use the money to assist with their storytelling theme this year.

“Every little bit helps,” says Selwyn Park School principal Vern Stevens. “It would be fantastic to have a GoPro camera to help the kids tell stories from around our area.

“The customers are supportive when they see their school or group as one of the options,” says The Warehouse store manager Sandi Finlay.

“We just want people to know that the money from their plastic bags stays in the community.

“There has to be a strong focus on the local community and children. We are happy to get behind anything that supports families in the long run.

“It will make a huge difference to us,” says Tangowahine School principal Wayne Steele. The money will fund new technology for the students. “We aim to get one device per child.”

The next groups will be Ruawai College, Baylys Beach Surf Lifesaving Club and Arapohue School.

Each group is a contender for six months and The Warehouse Dargaville encourages anyone with a cause that supports children and families to apply in store.

The Warehouse Dargaville store manager Sandi Finlay is proud to be helping the community with their Bag for Good campaign

Chair of Commissioners

Northland Field Days is on this week. Whether you are from Mangawhai or Te Kopuru, Whangarei or Auckland, Northland’s biggest three day agriculture event is not to be missed. Dargaville will be a busy place, show-casing the most recent farming innovations and the latest technologies.

Thank you to the organisers and volunteers and sponsors of this event.

To the visitors, welcome. Enjoy Kaipara’s great hospitality.

The Kaipara District Council staff and Commissioners look forward to the year ahead.

Our vision, Kaipara – where it’s easy to live, or he ngawari te noho, reflects the friendly, simple and quiet nature of our District. We work hard, but we also enjoy nature’s gifts. We are blessed with our two oceans, the wonderful Kaipara Harbour, our Kai Iwi Lakes and the many passionate communities that associate with these waterways.

Agriculture, horticulture and forestry provide considerable support to our Kaipara economy. The meat and dairy industries have large local processing plants, in Dargaville and Maungaturoto. But our proximity to Auckland also means that manufacturers are located in Kaipara. Then there is tourism – we are a place for those who love the environment and the outdoors.

We are a great place to live and work, and to relax. One can buy a house or lifestyle block in Kaipara for a much lower price than one would pay in Auckland. And we do not have the hassles of traffic!

The Kaipara District Council is growing stronger by the day. We have been through troubled times, but we are well on the way to recovery. Our next ten year Council Plan has now been released for feedback. Looking Ahead is available on our website at www.kaipara.govt.nz.

In a financial sense, we are maintaining a balanced budget, paying down debt, and containing rate increases.

In an infrastructure sense we are investing to protect our roading network. While not converting unsealed roads to sealed, we are investing to improve the sub-structures of our roads. In particular, we are determined not to let our roads used by logging trucks deteriorate. We are investing also to protect our underground pipe networks. We are improving our knowledge of the condition of our wastewater and storm-water pipes. With this knowledge, we are maintaining them in an effective way.

In a community sense, we are making real efforts to engage with our many communities, to understand their aspirations and the needs that Council can meet. While we are keeping a tight reign on expenditure, this does not mean to say that the Council cannot be a good partner in community projects. Kaipara communities tend to have a “get up and go” approach, with voluntarism providing community project leadership. We salute this approach.

The maintenance of parks is a clear responsibility of Councils. We have parks under development in communities that are growing. The Mangawhai Community Park is receiving increased investment from Council.

We have parks that need attention and restoration work – the Taharoa Domain including Kai Iwi Lakes is one, and Harding Park and Pou Tu o Te Rangi in Dargaville is another. Both will receive increased investment from Council this year.

Kaipara has strong communities. We have an economy that is growing. We are well located, and offer lifestyles in most attractive surrounds. For those from outside, perhaps attending Field Days, we offer a great place to live, a great place to retire to, and being next to Auckland, a great place to operate a business from.

Welcome to Kaipara

Centre gets new home by Ayla Miller

The Kaurilands Skill Centre will be getting a brand new house on their current premises, thanks to NorthTec’s level four carpentry students.

In 1990 the centre began to provide care for people with disabilities. The new house will provide more room for the current service users and give those in the new house more independence as they will run the house themselves.

“The house is being built as part of a structured course. The framework will be completed at the Whangarei Future Trades NorthTec campus and Dargaville carpentry students will help with the on-site building,” says Kaurilands general manager, Karen Duncan. “NorhTec was happy to help as they are always looking

at ways to help the community, whilst giving their students practical skills,” she says.

This will be the centre’s third building and Kaurilands currently have beds for 20, 19 of which are filled. They predict the house will be finished in mid- winter.

Some of the wood for the project will be donated and people have helped the centre out along the way with digging out the site.

“We will be using local contractors to complete the house. It is a real community effort,” says Karen.

Kaurilands general manager, Karen Duncan and service user, Dijon Fouche are looking forward to their new building

Fighting Kauri dieback by Ayla Miller

Following a symposium in Hokianga to discuss Kauri dieback disease, the latest word from scientists is — ‘continue to be vigilant.’

“The symposium was an interesting combination of the community, tangata whenua and scientists,” says kauri dieback relationship manager Ian Mitchell.

Scientists from Northland and Coromandel presented their research information on topics such as genetic resistance, the potential for beneficial root fungi to protect kauri and tools to understand the way the disease works.

“There was discussion about the current and future systems that will be put in place to help stop the spread,” he says. Rahui or bans were considered but no further

information regarding locations has been announced.

Pukekaroro, just north of Kaiwaka is under rahui as kauri dieback is present. Pukeareinga, near Maungaturoto, has also been placed under the ban in the hope it will stop the disease spreading there too.

Injecting phosphite into infected and at risk trees is only a way of controlling the spread and there is still no cure. Research has shown that phosphite suppresses the microbes growth and enhances the plant’s defence system.

Scientists and community groups will continue to work together on strategies to reduce the spread.

Stair climb for charity by Ann Morgan

The annual Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge is still a while away on Saturday, May 23, but Kaiwaka Volunteer firefighters, Tim Brown, Mike Law, Mike Renton and Kraig Steiner are already in training.

Mike Law’s five-year-old grand-daughter has leukemia and this is just one motivating factor for the team to participate, raising funds for the Leukemia and Blood Cancer Foundation New Zealand.

The other three say they are not only doing the challenge because it helps the community but they also want to make sure ‘Grandpa’ gets to the top.

“If people took a trip to Starship and saw how well the staff look after the children, we are sure they would give more,” says Mike.

“When you have been visiting a child in Starship and witness all that goes on, you get a new appreciation and value for life. The staff are incredible and need all the support they can get.”

Every day six children and adults in New Zealand are diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

The team will battle their way up the Sky Tower stairwell with full firefighter gear on weighing up to 25kg. To support them go to the firefightersclimb.org.nz website and search for the Kaiwaka team.

Sports Expo and Children’s Day unite by Joanne Speechly

The Northern Wairoa Sports Expo and Children’s Day returns to Taha Awa Gardens in Dargaville on Saturday, March 7.

Sponsored by the Dargaville Veterinary Centre, the annual event aims to encourage active lifestyles, promote access to sports clubs and create an enjoyable day, which brings the community together.

“Last year, close to 1,000 people took part in a variety of sporting activities and fun sessions led by different sports clubs and codes,” says Sport Northland community sport advisor Joey Yovich.

“This year, there’ll be more opportunities for people to try new activities and gather information about clubs and community groups.

“The idea is to create a festival-type event for the Northern Wairoa, in an effort to unite sports groups and the community. It also provides an opportunity to showcase the region and everything it is made up of.”

The 2015 expo will include prize draws throughout the day, a bouncy castle and free sausage sizzle. Sport clubs attending

this year include golf, archery, netball, rugby league, rugby union, special olympics, gym sports, football, waka ama and hockey.

The expo takes place between 11am and 2pm at the Riverside Taha Awa Gardens.

Sack races, slippery slides and scarecrows by Ayla Miller

The historical Picnic Sports day has been organised by Michelle Cobb and members of the Donnellys Crossing Community Centre for the last 17 years.

“It is a really positive thing to have in a small village. I just love watching the children have fun,” says Michelle.

With no entry fee, Donnellys Crossing Picnic Sports day aims to be a day for the whole family.

“The team is passionate about keeping the annual event running as they believe it is an integral part the community’s history.”

There will be traditional games such as a needle in haystack competition, running races, gumboot throwing, tug of war, egg catching for the young and young at heart and Aranga School will have food, drink and a barbeque

available to purchase. “I especially enjoy the watersports and the slippery slide,” says Michelle.

“We are hoping for more entries in the scarecrow competition this year and we encourage anyone to bring along a cake for the fresh fruit cake competition which will then be auctioned off to help cover the costs of running the event.”

Once named the Sports and Axemans Carnival, the event has undergone some significant changes over the years but the fun and community spirit has stayed the same. The event will be held at the sports grounds on Saturday, March 7 from 10.30am until 3.30pm.

New tradesman in town by Andy Bryenton

A quarter of a century working in the plumbing trade is just the beginning when it comes to assessing Grant Low’s credentials.

The Dargaville born-and-raised tradesman is also a farmer, gasfitter, roofer and more, with an ethos of constant upskilling and training allowing him to branch out from his core discipline and into other areas of the trade.

Grant and his family returned from Auckland to assist in the running of his parents’ farm, culminating in a stint with long-established local firm Comber

Grant Lowe gives his name to the new Grant’s Gas and Plumbing

and Seymour, giving them the fully qualified plumber and gasfitter they needed for their team. Now he takes over the reins, with the business renamed and rebranded following the retirement of respected plumber Roger Seymour.

“We wish Roger well for his retirement and rehabilitation after his accident, and thank him for his friendship and support,” say Grant and his wife and partner Roseanne. The pair aim to keep up the standard of top craftsmanship and service established by the old business over many years.

Retro surfing rules at MangawhaiThe second annual fix of the ‘Logger Heads’ surf competition returns to the Mangawhai coast on Saturday, March 7.

The focus for this event is tradition and style.

“We have already had a good response for competitors from far and wide,” says contest director Tony Baker.

“There are loyal loggers here in New Zealand who have kept the art form alive and we have provided the canvas for these surfers to show their skills. There should be plenty of ‘nose-riding’ and ‘drop knee action’, with the best

logger making it look easy. Traditional logging represents a more pure form of longboarding and surfers ride boards inspired in the 1960’s, with single fins, resin tints, trimmed lines and graceful footwork.”

The entry fee is $40 which includes a t-shirt and a meal.

For more information contact Tony Baker on 021 907 066 or [email protected].

Garage sale for Plunket

“If you have items to donate, please drop them into the BNZ bank in Victoria St.

“The donations will be stored in the bank vault for safe keeping until the event takes place. All proceeds will go to the Plunket society,” says branch manager Sharon George.

“This is a great opportunity to support our local community and help grow great kiwi kids.”

The BNZ bank in Dargaville is holding a fundraising garage sale to coincide with the annual Plunket appeal in mid-March.

March against family violence Local residents will take a stand against family violence in Wellsford this Saturday, February 28.

The community march marks the end of a local campaign, which has been promoting the message ‘It’s not OK — but it is OK to ask for help’.

“This is a celebration of the work achieved and a way to cap off a really constructive and positive community campaign,” says Homebuilders family ser vices coordinator, Quentin Jukes.

“Anyone who supports the campaign is invited to take an hour out of their day and come to join us.”

For the last three months, 12 local family violence champions have been active in the North Rodney/Otamatea

area, promoting the message that ‘It’s ok to ask for help’ and distributing information about local organisations who can assist.

“The champions have featured in a series of posters promoting the message and they have been visiting a wide range of community groups,” says Quentin.

“There will be a free sausage sizzle, music, a festival atmosphere and a short walk through Wellsford. We can all be a part of making our community a safer place for everyone.”

The march starts at 11am, outside the public library.

Carrying on the tradition by Andy Bryenton

Northland’s Field Days brings many people into the town of Dargaville who would otherwise be busy working the land.

It’s a chance to meet, socialise, and take care of those little details above and beyond the event itself.

One such tradition dates back to even before the formal Field Days itself, when farmers visiting the local A and P show would take the opportunity to be measured up by their local tailors for new clothes. Often gentlemen would request a new year’s set of hard-wearing work clothes along with a suit for use on Sundays, making late summer a busy time for the main street’s sartorial experts.

At Jack Fannon Menswear, the eponymous tailor himself took care of his valued customers for more than seven decades — a fantastic innings in any trade. Now that tradition continues, and this Field Days will be no exception, as new owners carry on Jack’s work, and that of his father before him. Kathleen and Emma aim to retain the hallmark

Kathleen and Emma maintaining the long standing Jack Fannon quality

quality which saw the same familiar faces coming back ‘from fitting their school uniforms to being dressed for their wedding day’ and beyond, we are assured — folks married young and had large families when this business first opened in the early 1900s.

Change has come in two forms, however — a new computerised shop system is being installed just after Field Days, and the team are heading south to the seasonal men’s fashion market to secure new styles. This means a brief closedown from the 3rd to the 6th of March, after which the longest established shop in Dargaville’s high street will be open for the Autumn season.

Community spirit by Ayla Miller

Local Rotary volunteers will manage the parking and entry booths at the Northland Field Days again this year to raise funds for various projects in the Kaipara.

Dargav i l le Rotar y president Brian Burnett says, “It is great the field days can help us give back to the community.”

The Dargaville club will set to work with 70 volunteers, a mix of members and non-members.

“We support a number of activities including international student exchanges, a Rotary Youth Leadership programme, a driving academy and we donate to a number of schools in the area for their end-of-year prize-givings. Funds also go towards school speech contests, the Science and Technology Forum at Auckland University and our combined churches food bank.”

Funds raised will help with the worldwide Rotary initiated polio eradication campaign as well.

“I see it as a service to the community. We have a great social atmosphere with weekly meetings and entertaining speakers.”

Rotary is currently looking for new members. “We want men and women from a range of different backgrounds.

Dargaville Rotary club president Brian Burnett says Rotary will continue to support the community with funds raised at the field days this year

“The field days offer a good source of income for us which we designate for many different projects during the year.

“We have a good relationship with the field day organisers and hope to continue providing a good service,” Brian says.

Graduate brings skills home by Ayla Miller

After two years working in Australia, Dargaville local, Jamie Matthews is returning home as a qualified chiropractor to set up his own practice.

Jamie opened his main practice in Maunu, Whangarei earlier this month and opened a Dargaville branch on Monday, February 16, which will be operating on Monday afternoons from 2pm until 7pm at The Wellness Centre in the Victoria Street arcade.

“I want to help people understand chiropractic a bit more,” he says. “I came back as I wanted to help out my own community and to be close to family.”

It will be Dargaville’s only chiropractic clinic and he believes it is important rural residents have access to this type of health care without having to travel.

After graduating from the New Zealand College of Chiropractic in Auckland he moved to Australia and worked in Dubbo five hours inland from Sydney, working on cases resulting

from tough farming lifestyles which he expects will be similar to problems local farmers might experience.

Dr. Jamie Matthews is returning to help his community as a qualified chiropractor

Looking Ahead – our consultation documentThe Council is working towards adopting a new Long Term Plan (LTP) in June 2015 covering the years 2015 to 2025.

The legislation around the development of a LTP has changed with the 2014 amendment to the Local Government Act 2002. We are now required to use a consultation document to consult, and not a Draft LTP as we have done in the past.

We have called our consultation document – “Looking Ahead”.

In this document is a summary of options we have chosen and options we have rejected.

We want your feedback – did we choose the right option? If not, what do you think we should we do?

To learn more go to www.kaipara.govt.nz and read our consultation document, “Looking Ahead”.

Alternatively you can contact us on 0800 727 059 and ask our Customer Service staff to send you a copy.

We need your feedback by 5.00 pm, Friday 27 March 2015.

We encourage you to go online to complete the feedback request – the feedback request has not been designed to be filled out manually. We want you to be able to use the space you need to comment and not limit you to the space we provide.

You can also write to us (use the questions in the online feedback request if this helps) or attend one of our Round Table meetings. You can also attend one of our Opportunity to Provide Verbal Feedback meetings and tell us – just contact us on 0800 727 059 or 439 3123 to book a time slot.

Year of expansion a great success by Andy Bryenton

It’s not uncommon to hear of a large corporation from Auckland or overseas expanding through Northland.

But when a local Kaipara company goes from one busy local branch to four in a single year, it’s a highly respectable achievement.

That’s just what Gas and Tyre Services have achieved in the past year, bringing their 24/7 fleet service to trucking, agricultural and forestry companies across the entire northern part of New Zealand. Ordinary drivers, too, have embraced the service-based ethos of the Dargaville-born company, who now also operate out of Kaitaia, Waipapa and Ruakaka.

The Gas and Tyre team have been a regular fixture at Field Days for many years, and 2015 will be no exception. With a truck on site to assist with the popular tractor pull competition and a display tent clearly recognisable thanks to the immense tractor and log skidder tyres mounted out front, the boys in black and orange are all set to make this a year to remember.

Gas and Tyre Services put their success down to the fundamentals — a solid knowledge of their industry and those of the people they support, coupled with a commitment to service which often sees their trucks out on the road at all hours, rain and shine.

Gas & Tyres team up with Nokian’s research specialists at Northland Field Days 2014

After all, the weather and the season don’t stop the massive infrastructure which drives out primary industries, so those who serve them also have to be ready to roll into action fast!

From shooting to sheep racing on show

Among other events, 4WD trials, shooting, sheep racing and, of course good old-fashioned sheep shearing, will be on the cards.

Once again, the Northland Field Days team has pulled out all the stops to provide an extensive range of activities and entertainment for show-goers.

Watch the top sheep dog triallists in Northland face off against each other to find out who is the best in the region. With competitions being run since 2008 the Field Days continuously attracts Northland’s top dogs and shepherds in fierce competition. Clydesdale rides

Make your way around the Northland Field Days aboard a wagon pulled by three Clydesdale horses.

“There will be plenty for people to do see and experience at this year’s Northland Field Days from February 26 to 28 in Dargaville,” says president Lew Duggan.Four-wheel-drive adventures

Northland Toyota will be building a 4WD track next to their site for the first time, making it possible for anybody interested in getting a Toyota 4WD to take the opportunity to experience it in some real world conditions.

Northland Toyota sales consultant Nigel Gilmour says people trying out a new model Toyota Hilux, Land Cruiser or Rav4 on the 4WD course should expect to be put through their paces.

The company has introduced the track to reaffirm the Toyota Hilux position as a workhorse, says Nigel, “by giving visitors the opportunity to try out the truck in conditions it is likely to experience on a daily basis.”Shooting skills

Hunters and target shooters can show off their sharpshooting skills throughout

Grid connected solar for home & businessWith Northland power prices increasing on average by 6% per year a $250 monthly power bill today could mean you’ll pay more than $110,000 for your power over the next 20 years. The good news is, there is an alternative.

When Healthy Homes Tai Tokerau expanded into the Solar Energy market local Kaitaia businessman, Eric Shackleton, was early to recognize the value of generating his own power at his Ahipara vineyard. The 5kW Grid Connected system has been designed with in-built monitoring, so both Eric and Healthy Homes can check at any time to see how much power is being generated.

His best day’s generation to date, was on January 1, producing 36.9kWh. (A normal New Zealand household will use 22kW of electricity per day).

In the seven months to the end of January the system had produced 4,336kWh with 61% used on site, and Eric expects this to go up significantly over summer.

“The longer sunshine hours of summer are great for covering the power used by our vineyard watering. It’s a great match when your power load can be scheduled during the day.”

Craig Palatchie, Operations Manager for Healthy Homes, recommends on-line monitoring for all Grid Connect systems and also using Enphase micro inverters so that smaller systems, like the Start Up Pack can be added to later as needs change or finances permit. “It’s a great way to build up a system

to best match your power needs.” With a Grid Connected system you stay connected to your power company while trying to make and use as much of your own power as possible during sunshine hours.

Any surplus you make can go back to the power company, with most paying a small fee of 07–10c/kWh. However, when you use your

own power you are saving full price (35–45c/kWh) so it makes sense to design a system matching generation with consumption.

Knowing that you have prepaid most of your power for the next 25–30 years is a great feeling!

Investing in solar today will get you saving straight away.

From boats to milking systems by Ann Morgan

Brian Thomas of Baty Engineering designs and manufactures West Coast Catz, his own range of aluminium power boats.

The company also offers a range of general services.

“We have a mobile workshop which means issues can be dealt at the client’s site if needed,” says Brian. “Plus we design and build a range of ute decks, specific to the needs of each individual.

“Whatever engineering needs our clients have, we are available to discuss and plan with them.” Baty Thomas Engineering are dealers for Waikato Milking Systems and Reporoa High Lift Gates, and Brian says they can have a new cowshed installed in around three to four weeks. The gate range is motorised with robust quality construction and the strong design is easy to operate. Tailored controls in the shed help manage herd flow, by

encouraging the herd to move more easily. “At the Field Days we are able to inform farmers about the machinery and gate range. Together, these make the milking routine more efficient and productive. We will be displaying a number of products and look forward to helping farmers with their engineering and milking equipment requirements.”

Brian purchased the Dargaville business from company founders Doug and Ian Baty in 2002 and with more than 35 years of experience, Brian is now passing on his love of the trade to his eight staff, including two apprentices.

“I love my staff and go all out to make sure they are qualified and up to date with what is happening in the engineering world,” says Brian.

A dog’s tail …

Sum briges too far eh?“Well, willya lookit that Dog!”

yelled Boss.We was headin’ into Maungie ta

get sum stores an’ I was ridin; ona passinger seat ofa ute because Boss hada load of hay ona back he was gonna take up to Feel Daze for some kompetition or somethin’. Sed they was “crash barriers for tha lawnmoa races.” (I give up. Lawn moas cut grass don;t they, Races? Sheesh.)

Anyway, the Boss was on about sumthin’ so I gave me eye through tha

winscreen an’ there was a hole lotta blokes, an’ those funny red hats ona roadway, and signs sayin’ 30. Boss slowed down a ute so I figgered that sign meant not to go fast.

Then we was rounda cupla korners an the men were fixin’ up tha road. We hada stop fer a while, ana Boss leaned outa window and spoke to a bloke wiv a sign wot sed stop.

“Wot’s bluddy goin’ on,” seda Boss. “More blimmin’ road werks. More blimmin’ hold ups ona bridge eh?”

The bloke wiva stop sign sed he didint no, he just worked there, So Boss told me wot he was on about. “See Dog, this isa Matkohey Briges, on this windy bit of road, an; it was built a hundrid years ago, an’ the briges are still made fer horse an’ karts going one way ata time. So lookit that Fonterrer tanka in front. Like havin’ ta get thru the eye ofa needle!”

Sheesh, but Boss gets konfusin’. Wots this gotta do with Sharlene’s sewing? I seen his gerlfrend darning his gumboot socks ona farm, but now he’s mixin’ socks wiv Fonterror tankers?

Boss saw eye was preplixed, an he sed:”Dog, these two briges shooda been replaced wiv proper two lane briges long ago. Peeple have accidents cos they long past their use by date. So wot happins evry few munths. Blimmin’ road werks ta patch up the patches on tha patchups from last year.

“If they’d built a proper road an’ a flyover or a viaduct or sumthin wen they talked about it yeers ago, thay’da saved a blimmin’ fortune in repares by now

eh?” Mus admit I wus lookin’ at sum pukekas ina mangroves an’ not rilly taken a lotta notice, but the bloke wiva stop sign said “yer bluddy rite mate. Third time I bin doin’ this ina past yeer.”

Then the bloke turned his sign aroun’ an it sed Go. So Boss sed “See ya mate,” an’ we follered tha Fonterrer tanker over a litle woodin bridge. I rekind then I figgered wot Boss was on about.

Last time we wen’ to Horkes Bay, we went ona motoway to Orklind, an’ thru a tunnel an stuff. This mus’ be what Sharlene calls tha blimmin backblocks eh?

Boss musta red my mind as usual.“Yer rite Dog. We ina third werld here.

Just an hour or so from Orklind, an’ we stepped back a hundrid yeers.

But neva mind, we can’t afford a decint road it seems, but we kin send sum troops to Iraq to train them Iraqs to fite.

But like Sharlene sez — if them Yanks kin waste 30 billion dollas trainin’ Iraqs, why don’t Mr Ki and the govmint spend sum more?

We was drivin’ in to Maungi by then, an’ I spotted Ken’s butcha shop. I sorta lost intrist in Boss’s story eh?

I koold smell sum brisket in tha air.More laterBilly

Powering ahead for Field Days by Andy Bryenton

Expansion and consolidation have been the key to success for Power Farming in the year since they last brought their impressive range to Field Days.

“This has certainly been an interesting year to be in the agricultural industry in Northland,” says Power Farming branch manager Jonathan Cashmore. “In the middle of our second consecutive drought in the region, Power Farming completed both the purchase of Northland Machinery and the merger with Whangarei branch, formerly Ag and Earth. In the process, we’ve brought together many, many years of practical experience from East and West, backing it up with the support of the nationwide Power Farming group.”

Such a partnership is a valuable asset for farmers all across the north. Not only has the support network grown, with more expertise from a wider group of specialists, so too has the range of internationally sourced machinery and tractors available. The award-winning Deutz Fahr range is just one example.

Jonathan is certain that, with ten service technicians and fourteen support staff on deck, Power Farming are well situated to assist local farmers into a profitable 2015.

“We’re in a good position to do some very competitive deals with low finance rates,” he says, adding his thanks for the support of Power Farming’s customer base, and an invitation to visit them on site this week. SEE US AT NORTHLAND FIELD DAYS SITE: 267A

WE MEET DEADLINES

Experienced advice availableThe team at Yovich Hayward Pevats Johnston chartered accountants is looking forward to catching up with clients and meeting new ones at the Northland Field Days.

YHPJ Ltd and Yovich and Co Wealth Management have been helping Northlanders since 1968.

With seven directors, the company has a range of different skills to ensure individual customer needs are met. The team hopes to advocate what they have to offer for field days visitors.

“Our site theme is ‘working with our clients’ so we will have one of our clients logging trucks on display,” says business manager, Pam Greenfield.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to talk with experienced accountants

and financial advisors and gather information. There will be the chance to go in the draw to win a coffee machine, a colouring in competition for the children and lots of give-aways.

“We have a real passion for our clients and look forward to interacting with many different businesses during the field days,” she says.

“YHPJ and Yovich and Co Wealth Management aim to make a difference in their clients lives by showing them how to get the best results from their hard work.”

The YHPJ team can’t wait to meet up with new and existing clients at the field days

Regional Council pork pies by Ann Morgan

A variety of wild food treats have been successful in recent years as part of the Northland Regional Council field days attraction.

This year, wild pork mini pies will be the tasty treat designed to entice visitors to the NRC marquee at the upcoming Northland Field Days in Dargaville.

Thirty-five kilogrammes of wild pork meat has been sourced locally from an approved butcher and will be baked into mini pies by Whangarei’s Regency Pies.

“Previous wild food treats have included possum burgers, pies and pate, goat meat pies, wild rabbit sausages and even wasp larvae ice cream.” says council chairman Bill Shepherd.

The pies are a light-hearted way to attract visitors to the council marquee to view displays and interact with the staff about the more serious side of the regional council’s work.

The pies will be served over the three days of the field days from the

council's usual location — site 251 in the newly-renamed 'Fonterra Farm Source Road' — previously 'RD1 Road'.

“This year the marquee will have twin projects on display, they are ‘‘Working Together’ and ‘Taking Action’ themes,” says councillor Shepherd.

“We will have activities for visitors to participate in and learn how to take action on a wide range of topics, including pest plants and animals, land and lake management as well as kauri dieback disease.”

He says in a first for council, it also planned to sell a range of traps for pests including possums, rats and mustelids.

A photo booth to reinforce people's commitment to action will also feature, as would screenings of a new council-produced video on Northland's internationally significant dune lakes.

Hydrotherapy relief for arthritis sufferersPhysiotherapist Amy Griffiths has started a hydrotherapy class in Te Hana for arthritis sufferers.

The classes are open to anyone with an arthritic condition such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia.

“This is a great opportunity for people to access a local programme,” says Amy. “There has been a class in Whangarei for some time but that can be too far for someone with arthritic aches and pains to travel comfortably.”

Scientific studies have shown that exercise in water can improve strength and general fitness in people with arthritis.

“The warmth and buoyancy of the water makes exercising easier and exercising in a small group, with people who have a similar condition, provides peer support and also means that I can tailor the exercises to suit each individual.”

The Arthritis New Zealand classes start on Wednesday, February 11, and will be held at Karen Woolley’s Te Hana pool from 11am–12 midday.

“This is a great facility and I’m really grateful to Karen and her family

for allowing the community to access it. The pool is lovely and warm and has good access with steps and a rail into the water. There is even a hoist for those unable to use the steps.”

To register, call Sue at Arthritis New Zealand on 0800 663 463 or call Amy for more information on 021 207 2729.

Avoiding being neighbours at warOne of the most common disputes between neighbours is the fence-line running between the adjoining properties. Generally speaking, the law relating to fences is contained in the Fencing Act 1978.

To avoid any dispute years later, it is important when purchasing a property to check the physical boundaries and to establish the boundary pegs, if at all possible. In the event of a dispute, a surveyor can always establish where the boundary line runs and, if necessary, can replace survey pegs which may have been moved or missing for whatever the reason.

Unless there is an agreement with your neighbour, fences must be on the boundary line, though there is provision for give and take where the true boundary is not a easy line, or simply physically difficult to follow. The cost of building or repairing a fence is borne equally between adjoining owners, unless one owner damages it, in which case the cost of repairs will fall on that owner. You must give notice to your neighbour of any repairs to an adjoining fencing.

What if my neighbour doesn’t want a new fence at all? They can object to part or all of your proposal within 21 days if they believe the existing fence is adequate, or think your proposal is excessive. They can also object to being asked to pay if they don’t own the property. Also, your neighbour only has to contribute to a fence which is an ‘adequate’ fence. That is, one that is ‘reasonably satisfactory’ for the purpose it is intended to serve. So a

neighbour does not have to contribute to half the cost of, let’s say, an elaborate fence between the two of you!

If the correct procedure is not followed the occupier of any adjoining land will not be liable to contribute to the cost of the fence. We know the full details of the Fencing Act and can advise you of your rights and obligations. If you are having any difficulty or would like further advice regarding the procedure to serve a notice on your neighbour for constructing or repairing a fence, please contact us.

In the event of a dispute, the court can deal with all fencing disputes, such as its type and cost, but it is better, and more economical, to reach an agreement if you can. Most importantly, discuss your plans with your neighbour before you start putting in the fence-posts, and try to keep the proposal reasonable as they are entitled to object if they disagree about what is appropriate. For more information contact Alistair Hammond at Hammonds Law.

Creating Eutopia by Ayla Miller

Through everything, the new owners of Eutopia Cafe Marijke Valkenburg and Robert ter Veer have stood firm, refusing to let various unexpected setbacks dampen their vision.

The couple bought Kaiwaka’s iconic cafe in April, with the idea to renovate and rejuvenate the unusual building.

Marijke and Rob saw that the cafe had a lot of potential and decided something had to be done about it.

“We will do the work in stages. Progress is slower than expected due to the labour intensive nature of the work, bad weather over winter and other commitments.

“It will continue as a cafe, we would like to make it something Kaiwaka can be proud of again,” says Marijke.

“We want to incorporate our own style. Our plans include making a sculpture gallery for local artists and a tower that can be used for events.”

The couple have experience with unusual buildings, having built their own home which also incorporates such creative details.

“We are interested in organic and sculptural architecture. We do nearly all the work ourselves. We enjoy a challenge, often finding ourselves on yet another learning curve.”

The couple hope to give the place more of a New Zealand feel,

Renovations at Eutopia Cafe are coming along slowly but surely thanks to dedicated new owners Marijke Valkenburg and Robert ter Veer

incorporating aspects of NZ flora and fauna. “We aim to move away from any new age image to make it accessible to everyone.

“It is art for art’s sake. I believe art should be something you can walk on, eat off, look through and generally live in, not just something hanging on a wall,” she says.

Future plans include using solar panels and an electric car charging station.

They hope to open again towards the end of the year.

The best of town and country by Andy Bryenton

When the fun of the Field Days ends, the possibilities for entertainment and dining are endless here in the Kaipara region.

Whether you’ve travelled far to take in the sights and sounds of Northland’s biggest outdoor event, or if you are staying in Dargaville itself, there are a wealth of flavours to try.

Make sure you try a variation on the local specialty while you’re here. Kumara based dishes range from crispy wedges with sour cream all the way through to a unique twist on a traditional Thai sweet pudding. We’re also famous for the quality of our delicious seafood, fresh from the bounteous harbour. Award

winning Angus steaks are another succulent Kaipara favourite — get your favourite cuts to BBQ later or enjoy a steak at one of our local eateries.

Music is another Field Days celebration drawcard, with all styles represented across venues from Baylys Beach to Aratapu and beyond. If you like classic rock, reggae and dub, country music or jazz you will be well pleased with the talent on offer.

And for those heading out of town after a long three day event, remember

that there are plenty of memorable stops along the way as you head home — places to refresh and refuel with award

winning coffee, top class hospitality and another helping of the finest food our region is proud to produce.
