Kährs…At Kährs we make wood fl oors. Nothing but wood fl oors. Many of the things around us are made for fast consumption and are replaced according to the whims of fashion. With our fl oors it’s exactly the opposite. It takes several decades for the raw material to grow. In order to craft a beautiful wood fl oor, that can be appreciated for generations, you need to love and appreciate the environment. We understand, because at Kährs we have worked with wood since 1857.

A NATURAL APPROACH TO QUALITYAt Kährs, we look beyond the surface. Our quality consciousness begins with selecting the fi nest raw material. We do this in cooperation with our 3,000+ timber suppliers, who all share our views on quality and the environment. Each tree used in our production is carefully selected and then felled. For each tree felled, new trees are planted, guaranteeing new forests for future generations to enjoy and utilise.

OUR INNOVATIVE SPIRITOver the years, we have continued to launch new innovative solutions. In the 1960’s, we were the fi rst to offer factory-applied prefi nish, an innovation that turned into an industry standard. In 2000, we launched the fi rst glue-less mechanical joint system; Woodloc®. And still, Woodloc® is the world’s strongest and most advanced joint system, promoting a fast and easy installation, as well as a perfect end result without any gaps, ever!

THE INVENTOR OF THE ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORIn 1941, Kährs was granted a patent for a multi-layer wood fl ooring construction. This was the world’s fi rst engineered wood fl oor. The construction makes the fl oor more stable and the raw material is utilized with greater environmental awareness.

Our company and main production facility is situated in the southern Swedish province of Småland, right in the middle of the small town of Nybro, surrounded by dense forest.Not only does this area supply us with all the raw material we need – we also work and live here, with our families, as part of the local community. This means that we must operate an extremely clean production.

Inventor of the Modern Wood Floor…Not only did Kährs’ introduction of the multilayer wood fl oor construc-tion contribute to a more stable product – it also contributed to raw material being used with greater environmental awareness.New innovations – like Woodloc® and the use of water-based stains – are just a couple of examples of how we have revolutionized the wood fl ooring industry.

WATER-BASED STAINSKährs was one of the fi rst fl oor manufacturers to replace synthetic-based stains with water-based stains. The new process enabled us to further enhance the colours created by nature – without causing any harm.

WOODLOC®

Woodloc® is still the most advanced locking system on the market. The system joins the boards together and then locks them into place. This ensures that gaps are completely eliminated from the start and throughout the lifetime of the fl oor.

MULTI-LAYER CONSTRUCTIONA wood fl oor from Kährs is constructed on a multi-layer principle. It is 75 per cent more stable than a solid wood fl oor. It resists warping, buckling and cracking, even during seasonal variations in temperature and humidity.

…that turned out to be GreenThe multi-layer wood fl oor, our innovation from 1941, proved not only to be the best and most stable fl ooring on the market – but also the most environmentally friendly construction yet to be invented; one that optimizes the use of the raw material, is made from renewable resources and is recyclable.Our production process is designed to have minimal impact on the environment. All waste, in the form of bark and wood shavings, is processed in a sophisticated recycling system that supplies energy to the whole plant, as well as to the surrounding community.

ONLY CONTROLLED SUPPLIERSSuppliers are chosen principally from companies holding an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certifi cation) certifi cate or equivalent, or those who can in some other way document that they operate environmentally aware timber procurement.

FREE FROM SOLVENTSKährs was the fi rst fl oor manufacturer to introduce an entirely solvent-free production process. This took place as early as 1984 – long before it became general practice in the industry.

GIVING BACK TO NATUREThe amount of forest in Sweden has increased steadily over the past 100 years and the number of trees that are planted by far exceeds the amount we harvest. On average, fi ve trees are planted for every tree that is harvested to maintain a sustainable forest environment.

Whether you prefer a classic or contemporary look, the Linnea range provides numerous options to complement all interior styles. Kährs Linnea, fi rst intro-duced in 1993, was the world’s fi rst hardwood fl oor to be offered with a glueless mechanical joint system – the patented Woodloc® – in 2000. Pleasing to the eye and to the touch, Linnea combines the aesthetic with the practical. With a thickness of just 7 mm, the fl oor is simple and easy to install, durable and easy to maintain.

Our widest range, Kährs Original is renowned worldwide for its high quality and versatility. It spans light to dark wood species, with matt, silk matt and nature oil fi nishes, in 1-, 2- or 3 strip designs. Wood exposed to normal sunlight is subject to colour change. As with all natural products crafted from wood, these changes are expected and add to the beauty and distinctiveness of a wood fl oor.

If you move or rearrange carpets and furniture occasionally, you can avoid distinct lines between the exposed and unexposed areas of the fl oor. The swatches show the shades that different

wood species will turn after 2–3 years’ exposure to normal sunlight.

WOOD’S NATURAL COLOUR CHANGE

SELECT THE RIGHT FLOOR FOR THE RIGHT AREADifferent wood species naturally have different degrees of hardness. For rooms exposed to a great deal of wear and tear, such as kitchens and hallways, it’s best to choose one of the harder wood species.

We want your Kährs fl oor to remain beautiful for many years. This is why we only produce fl oors in the harder wood species. The only exception is Birch, a medium-hard species that can look beautiful in a living room or bedroom, but is less suitable in areas exposed to a lot of wear and tear, such as kitchens. The table compares the hardness of different wood species.

KÄHRS FLOORING GUIDEFinding the perfect fl oor is a process that involves many different considerations, including choice of wood species, surface treatment and grade of timber. On these pages, you will fi nd information, recommendations and advice about things to consider when choosing a fl oor.

Kährs offers a wide range of wood species – from palest Ash to deep toned Jarrah. A dark fl oor ‘swallows’ a lot of light and can affect the feeling of space. At the same time, a dark fl oor can create warmth and cosiness in a large room. A pale toned wood fl oor increases the feeling of space by refl ecting light within the room. It can also create a dramatic contrast to dark design details.

THE COLOUR OF WOOD

THE SURFACE TREATMENT

SILK MATTOur silk matt lacquer complements the wood’s character by accentuating its natural structure. It also makes the fl oor more hardwearing and easier to clean. At the same time, the lacquer is one of the thinnest available, so it doesn’t conceal the wood’s natural lustre.

MATTOur matt lacquer creates the impression that the fl oor is made from untreated bare wood, or has a natural oil prefi nish. The soft-to-touch natural surface is incredibly tactile and pleasing under-foot. Matt lacquer is as hardwearing and easy to maintain as silk matt lacquer.

BEVELLED EDGESBevelling the edges of a 1-strip fl oor board accentuates its plank shape. From a micro-bevel (a slight accentuation of the edge using sandpaper) to a more dramatic, stronger bevel on all edges, this design feature gives the fl oor a more rustic and distinct look.

BRUSHEDBrushing the surface highlights the natural structure of the grain and creates additional texture. Brushing is usually accompanied by other surface treatments, such as a bevelled fi nish and a coloured stain or glaze.

NATURE OIL Kährs Nature oil gives your fl oor a wonderfully natural and beautiful feel. The oil brings out the wood’s texture and graining, and enhances its tone. Whilst easy to maintain, remember that fl oors treated with Nature oil need a little more care and should be treated with Kährs UV/Nature Oil Refresher regularly.

STAINEDStains can be used to further enhance natural colour tones – from palest white and whisper greys, to rich mocha and charcoal shades.

GRADINGS

1-STRIP DESIGNThe surface of the board is sawn in one piece. This emphasizes the natural feeling and shows the character of the wood species to full effect.

CITY SELECTIONThese fl oors are stylishly understated; they’re created from a uniform and regular timber grade with small variations in grain and tone. They can be light or dark, depending on the wood species, but the tone and overall effect is uniform. If you like a calm, minimalistic impression, look for a fl oor in the City selection.

COUNTRY SELECTIONIf you’re looking for a more rustic fl oor, you will probably like our Country selection. Here you will fi nd dramatic graining, gnarls and knots, with greater colour variation, for a bold and unmistakably natural look.

TOWN SELECTIONDark or light, these fl oors are characterized by subtle variations in tone and pattern, without knots. They form a classic backdrop, allowing the rest of the decoration to take ‘centre stage’. If you’re looking for a fl oor with minimal variations, take a look at our Town selection.

2-STRIP DESIGNThe wear layer is two strips’ wide. The strips are arranged to give each fl oor an individual character.

DUTCH PATTERNA classic fl oor that benefi ts from a modern con-struction. The surface layer features a repeating box pattern made up of three vertical strips, laid side by side, divided by one horizontal strip across the top. When the boards have been installed, they create a stunning ‘cable stitch’ pattern.

3-STRIP DESIGNThe wear layer is three strips’ wide. The strips are different lengths and are positioned at random, creating a unique fl oor design.

SHIP’S DECKA fl oor with a maritime feel, it has a decorative strip edge, and wood plugs at the end of each board, to give a real Ship’s Deck look. The strip and plugs form part of each 1-strip board and the fl oor is installed in exactly the same way as our other wood fl oors.
