FALA

In the heart of the Persian Gulf, a journalist seeks to unravel a mystery of labor, culture, and abuse. In 2010, I journeyed to Kuwait to complete a documentary about the Kafala sponsorship system. Over a period of three years, I collected interviews with Filipino domestic workers, Kuwaiti activist, policy makers, and humanitarians. Kafala was the result of these interviews. Centering around four Filipina maids, the play exposes the abuses in a broken system, as well as challenges of foreign intervention.

This is a memory book rather than one of hard fact and precise statistic….It is simply an attempt to get the story of the holocaust known as The Great Depression from an improvised battalion of survivors" -Studs Terkel Based on Stud Terkel's book of the same name, Hard Times tells the story of the Great Depression through a woman's eyes. Shown through ballet and movement, the piece explores the complexities and challenges faced by a variety of women. Through triumph and failure, they share their heartwarming, and often comic stories of survival  during one of the worst economic crises.

I look for something beautiful outside of myself,I don't know who has it, I don't know what it is.I sigh and groan without wanting to,I quiver and tremble without knowing it,I find no peace night or day,And yet I like suffering this way!Performed with a full orchestra and ensemble, the classic opera of betrayal, revenge, and love retold as a modern political scandal.
