BUSINESS & ENTREPRENEURSHIP (B&E) CONCENTRATION SUPERVISED PRACTICE OVERVIEW

Mentor/Preceptor Qualifications: A professional willing to mentor you in learning to start a business. This person does not have to be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.

Logged Hours: 160 hours

Description of Experience: In order to pass the B&E rotation, the intern must demonstrate that they have built upon the required competency CRDN 4.8 (Develop a plan to provide or develop a product, program or service that includes a budget, staffing needs, equipment and supplies.) initially done during the food service rotation. Interns are expected to identify resources needed to establish a private practice or business, use social media to promote the business, design a webpage and develop a business plan specific to an opportunity they could pursue in the future. ASSIGNMENTS FOR BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP CONCENTRATION ELECTIVE

There are five tasks that are to be done during the B&E rotation.

1. Log of time spent in concentration rotation 2. Develop a plan for your own business (this must be placed in the Typhon external documents) 3. Develop a business webpage 4. Practice using social media 5. Write an end-of-rotation reflection – send to the program director at [email protected] 6. Other activities as requested by the preceptor (if you have a question as to what is appropriate, contact the DI

director immediately).

TYPES OF BUSINESSES (NOT INCLUSIVE) YOU MAY WISH TO START

Below is a list of possible business types you may want to choose. You will likely wish to spend some time with a preceptor who has a business like that which you want to plan. You must have an affiliation agreement with each site where you will spend one or more weeks or where you will complete assignments for competencies. If you go to a site (e.g. a health fair, television station, cooking class, grocery store, etc.) for a day or two, you do not need a separate affiliation agreement. These activities will fall under the direct supervision of your primary mentor/preceptor who will approve your time log for that period.

ROTATION PROCESS AND TIMELINE

At least eight weeks prior to starting your business and entrepreneurship concentration supervised practice rotation, you must identify a mentor/preceptor. This person does not have to be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, however, you must have an affiliation agreement signed by K&A with that person. The program will take care of facilitating that agreement for you.

BEFORE EACH ROTATION

Step Who/When

Rotation Scheduling and Approval

Identify mentor/preceptor and obtain permission from the site.

Obtain signed affiliation agreement for any site where you will spend more than 1 week or complete competencies. The K&A legal department is available to aid you if negotiation is needed. Submit signed agreements to DI director for signature by KADDI.

Facilitate scheduling with the preceptor(s).

You must schedule the whole B&E rotation (160 hrs.) and get approval of your mentor/B&E preceptor and the DI director before you start the B&E rotation.

The intern will be responsible for contacting their site/preceptor at least 1 week prior to starting their rotations to determine rotation logistics (where to park, how to dress, etc.).

The DI Director must approve major changes to the rotation schedule.

Rotation Prep Review the Professional Library / Resources and Recommended Readings in the list given previously.

Review any materials pertinent to the B&E rotation.

Complete any pre-rotation readings and questions from the mentor/preceptor. For example, if you are going to be working in long-term care, you may be required to familiarize yourself with federal and state regulations pertaining to that industry.

Familiarize yourself with any facilities and logistics you will be engaged with during the rotation.

Provide your preceptor with the signed confidentiality statement if requested.

DURING EACH ROTATION

Step Who/When

Rotation Hours Log/Journal

Intern completes each day and logs time at www.typhongroup.net/consultingdietitians

For this B&E rotation you should also keep a paper log detailing how you spend your time.

At the end of each week, both the intern and preceptor must review and preceptor approves time log.

The DI Director will review the log at least biweekly and provide feedback if needed.

END OF EACH ROTATION

Step Who/When

Finalize Primary preceptor performs the evaluation of professional performance traits and the B&E concentration evaluation.

Intern will evaluate mentor/preceptor.

Hand-written thank-you note to all preceptors/sites.

Hand-written thank-you note is required and a small gift is suggested for the primary mentor/preceptor for this concentration supervised practice rotation.

End of Rotation Reflection

Interns will write an end-of-rotation reflection describing how they positively impacted their rotation, the team that they worked with, explaining what they learned, skills developed, areas in which they need to improve, areas they would like to explore, and how this rotation experience added or changed their view about starting a dietetics-related business. Submit this reflection to the KADDI director. It is ungraded but will be used for program improvement.

END OF ENTIRE PROGRAM

Step Who/When

Exit Review

The exit review will include a confidential survey to assess the overall program and provide feedback for continuous improvement. Access to the exit review survey will be provided to the interns by the KADDI director as soon as the program is completed.

Please rate the intern using the following scale: 4 = Exceptional (Intern consistently performed above expected levels at all times, skill level sufficiently mastered) 3 = Good (Intern performed at or above expected levels the majority of the time, limited need for continued

development of this particular skill) 2 = Limited (Intern performed fairly well in this area at times but there is some room for growth or improvement) 1 = Low (Intern consistently did not perform as strongly as expected and there is significant room for growth or

improvement) 0 = Can’t Rate (Didn’t observe or not applicable to the experience the intern was involved in)

Keith & Associates Distance Dietetic Internship

Business & Entrepreneurship Concentration

Preceptor & Intern Contract

Mentor/ Preceptor Qualifications: A professional willing to mentor the intern in learning to start a business.

This person does not have to be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.

Description of Experience: The Business & Entrepreneurship (B&E) rotation is designed to allow the intern to

develop a business plan to provide or develop a product, program, or service that includes a budget, staffing

needs, equipment, and supplies. Interns are expected to identify resources needed to establish a private practice

or business, use social media to promote business, design a webpage and develop a business plan specific to an

opportunity they can pursue in the future.

In order to ensure that all aspects are met and that the intern satisfies all competencies, the B&E concentration is

divided into three (3) main components:

Social Marketing- i.e. Generating Instagram posts, blog posts, running a Facebook page, using Snapchat; all to

promote a business

Developing a webpage

Developing a business plan

Expectations and time budgeting

The B&E rotation is expected to take a minimum of 160 hours. Keith & Associates currently has set a guideline

for the number of hours budgeted for each main component Social Marketing: 24 hours Developing a webpage:

48 hours Developing a business plan: 88 hours

Any changes made to the hours allocated to each task must be discussed and approved by the program director

before the start of the rotation. The reason for this is so that the tasks do not expand beyond the scope of the

rotation. The intern is there to learn. The preceptor will hopefully benefit from the intern’s contribution;

however, the intern must have a firm idea of what is expected, when it is due, what the deliverable product is to

be (e.g. Instagram posts, blogs, newsletter, education materials, etc.) and how it will be evaluated.

13

up with their own assignments that will meet the competencies. For instance, the intern does not HAVE

To the Intern

As a dietetic intern, it is your responsibility to adhere to all the guidelines set for the business and

entrepreneurship rotation by Keith & Associates. It is your responsibility to complete the assigned tasks in a

timely manner and meet the deadlines set by your preceptor. By signing this contract, you agree to meet the

established requirements.

If for any reason you feel that the workload is too much and you are unable to meet the previously agreed on

timeline that you and your preceptor established, discuss with your preceptor if it can be modified and how you

can compensate for any lost time. The program director is available to help with this process.

To the Preceptor

As a preceptor, you are agreeing to act as a mentor to the intern in order to ensure that they meet all the

competencies and requirements needed to pass this rotation. You will keep track of their assignments and hours

and will provide feedback accordingly. It is up to you to decide if the intern has satisfactorily met all the

requirements in a timely manner. It is important that you give regular feedback so the intern knows how they

are progressing. It is also important to give an appropriate workload of assignments and keep due dates and

expectations realistic.

If for any reason you feel that the intern is not meeting your expectations and they cannot keep up with the

assignments in a timely manner, discuss this with the intern to come up with a solution and modify the

previously agreed upon timeline in order to still meet all the goals. You will be completing a weekly report that

is signed and given to the intern to be sent to the program. If an intern is rated as needing improvement or poor

for two weeks in a row the KADDI director will be contacting both the intern and the preceptor to set up a

conference call to resolve performance issues.

The program director is available at any time. Contact her at [email protected] or call 918-

574-8598.

By signing this agreement, all parties agree to the terms as described above. Both parties will received a printed

copy of this agreement, and will be responsible for upholding its terms.
