Celebrating the Salesian (Fr) LENS of ChristKarunapuram, 11, December 2014: Thememorial Mass of Fr John Lens, wascelebrated at Don Bosco Philosophate,Karunapuram. The Vice-Provincial (FrThathireddy Vijayabhaskar) in hisintroductory words recalled Fr Lens’ wordsuttered during an interview with him: “Iworked hard and I worked for the poor!”With the strong conviction that we werepraying to him, rather than for him, 150members of the Salesian family gathered forthe occasion, spent the morning inEucharistic thanksgiving and prayer.

The Provincial, Fr Raminedi Balaraju, in hissermon, highlighted some of the virtues ofFr John Lens from his own autobiography,the existence of which was made knownduring the funeral. He stated that Fr Lenstruly knew the value of genuine love, overand above other virtues. In one entry of his,sometime around the silver Jubilee of hisordination, he noted three dangers of gettingtoo engrossed in work: one becomes

superficial (too many things to do); onebecomes uncharitable (comparison withothers); and finally one seeks and justifiescompensation for the hard work by givingin the temptations of the flesh.

He also stressed the fact that Fr Lens was acheerful person. He reiterated the words ofPope Francis, while speaking of the year ofthe Consecrated Life, that a single wordwhich best describes a consecrated personis ‘joy’. To celebrate his joyful charity andservice, that members of the Salesian family,Presentation Convent and Sacred HeartNovitiate, and JMJ congregation, gatheredfor the Holy Eucharistic celebration at 11am. It was followed by a short prayer serviceat the tomb.

Fr Kannadipara Mathew, who had the goodfortune of living with Fr Lens shared withthe congregation, their rich experience withFr Lens. They were unanimous in stating thathe truly inspired thousands of youngreligious all along his life living a life of

consistency, generosity,optimism, trans-parency and a simple,humble spirituality.

Vijayawada, 11-13 December 2014: TheYaR (Young at Risk) National Forum of theSalesians in South Asia, headed byFr.Thomas Koshy sdb, has started on abeautiful journey of research with the youngat risk as participants in a researchprogramme. It will have the scope of studyinghow YaR centres can be run with the activeinvolvement of the children themselves. Thedirectors of 10 YaR centres from five SouthIndian Salesian provinces met together atChiguru, Vijayawada, to chalk out thisprogramme of Participatory Action Research(PAR) in their centres to begin with.

Starting from January 2015, the Bi-centenary Year of Don Bosco's birth, 30researchers along with the staff and childrenwill be on a 3-year participatory researchprocess. They will be seeking ways of makingthe YaR centres to be run by the children,for the children and with the children.

The idea of starting a Participatory ActionResearch programme was first mooted at theNational YaR Workshop in March this yearon the theme, “Behavioural Difficulties of theYoung at Risk". The findings of a 6-monthexperiment in PAR with the theme ofaggression among children was presented.The response of the participants wasoverwhelming. TheForum took it up asa national ventureand wanted to usethe methodology ofPAR to make theYaR centres notonly more childfriendly, but morechild directed andchild managed. Just

as the centres are meant for the children andwe are at their service, the research isoriented to make the children not only theparticipants, but the subjects as well asagents, not objects of the research.

Fr. John Tharakan SDB supplemented thesociological and developmental approachwith a psychological approach to socialcommunication as a tool to build upunderstanding as well as relationship amongthe PAR participants. To look at thebehavioural difficulties that the children face,their running away from home is seen as thejourney of the archetypal hero or heroine intoexile, their struggle with their own shadowsas well as other unexpected obstacles thatchallenge them to trace out a new path toliberation and genuine growth. The resultwould be a behavioural transformation of allthe participants in the research, the children,the care administrators and the researchersthemselves.

The entire discussion was given depth withthe ethnographic approach proposed by Dr.Fr. Jose Maliekal sdb, a philosopher in hisown right. He showed the group howunderstanding the children from a socio-cultural background, assuring their agencyand involving them in the research as

subjects could makethe ParticipatoryAction Research ar e s o u n d i n gsuccess.

After a thoroughbriefing on thesubject matter, thedirectors and theForum Secretary

Gunadala, 22 December 2014:The community of DonBosco has anticipatedthe Christmascelebrations. In factthe preparation forthe Christmas beganwith various prayerservices such aswreath services andnovena services ofChristmas. Thespiritual journeytransformed and enabled tocenter the importance on Christ thanthe periphery things such as cakes andcookies. Keeping in mind so much anti –Christian activities in the society thecommunity has given a good insight to buildthe crib systematically where in child Jesuswas surrendered by church, temples andmosque through which we articulated the

fact that the Child Jesus thegreatest gift from God is

born to share the love ofthe Father to all

irrespective ofcaste, region andreligion. All thosewho glanced at thisstructure have been

thrilled and gainedthriving insights

and convinced aboutvarious characteristic

traits of contemporaryCatholics especially religious.

Having offered special prayers for the peace,joy and unity of the humanity we havetaken active participation in the festiveEucharistic celebration. Later the staffaspirants and domestic staff have expressedour togetherness by sharing Christmas gifts.

DB Tech, a network of Don Bosco skilltraining centres, attempts to bridge thewidening divide between those who haveaccess to opportunities and those who areincreasingly being marginalized from the‘new economy‘ jobs.

The DB Tech network addresses thisendemic problem with a market-basedapproach that is sensitive to the socio-economic needs of marginalized youth in the18-35 years age group.

DB Tech is an example of synchronous socialaction of various stakeholders, aimed atmainstreaming and ensuring economicsecurity for youth by helping them acquirethe required livelihood and soft skills in anenvironment of learning and mentoring thatis responsive to the individual‘s emotionaland developmental needs.

Set up in 2006 with an objective to providequality vocational training to disadvantagedyouth DB Tech today is a network of 230skill training centres, arguably the largestnetwork after the government spread across28 states of India.

St. Theresa - Parishioner about Fr. LensFr. John Lens....

It was in the year 1975, whenFr. John Lens took over asthe parish priest of St.Theresa’s Church, Sanath-nagar, the parish thenconsisted of over 2000families. We were a mixtureof people from differentwalks of life. Having him wasa great honor since we couldsee him handling everythingand every person in a uniqueway. He began the Vincent De Paul Society,the educational society for the children, theLegion of Mary and the Salesian Co-operators, all of which were smoothlyhandled by this precious soul. He valuedevery second of life he was given by God.He’d never rest during the day, instead he

would spend his timereaching out to the sick andneedy. He trusted the peoplewho worked with him.He leda simple life, So simple thathe’d be off to all thehospitals in theneighborhood carryingbiscuits for the sick riding hisTVS. He’d not only visit thembut spend time with themassuring them that God wastaking care of them. Hissmile was a ray of hope to

the weakest of hearts, soothing and warm.His actions reflected his dedication towardshis vocation to God, His words radiated lovefor all around him.

He had immense love for the poor childrenaround him who were deprived of their

His simple yet generous gestures of love likevisiting the sick and the poor, carrying foodfor them, giving them hope and courage arejust small examples of how great a soul hewas. A saintly figure who was never at restbut deeply engrossed in instilling love andfaith in God in the people around him. Ahumble soul, obedient to his call, persevered

in his day to day lifeand completed hisjourney in perfection,simplicity, humility, loveand in every waypleasing to God.

Hyderabad, 25 January, 2015: Over 200children, held bondage as child labourers,were rescued by the city police of Hyderabadon Saturday, 24 January, from oneapartment building in Talabkatta,Bhavaninagar, Hyderabad. Finding noappropriate place to shelter these haplesschildren, most of whom are from Bihar, theywere brought to Don Bosco Navajeevan,Ramanthapur where the Salesians, staff andespecially resident children have been goingout of their way to make them feelcomfortable and secure.

The operation based on a tip off was carriedout by over 400 police personnel under theleadership of Dy. Commissioner of Police, MrV. Satyanarayana. It is said a cordon andsearch operation as part of anti-terrorismchecks led to his huge rescue operation.

The children were below 12 years, a numberof them could be over 18 years. They hail

mostly from Bihar. They were brought to thecity by owners of bangle manufacturingunits hailing from Uttar Pradesh or Bihar.The parents of the children have receivedadvances to the tune of 10 to 20 thousandRupees.

Further, the children used to be paid only twoto five thousand rupees a month as wagesand were made to work for long hours andnot allowed to leave the place of work. Thenewspaper reports said that children whoshould be holding books or playing games

gave our annual report, speaking onmilestone events and test scores from thepast year. The colourful evening continuedwith further programmes like kuchipudi,classical, folk, Dimsa and other traditionaldances, skit on early life of Johnny Boscoand songs. In between these dances, Mrs.Theresa Kennedy gave a speech on the

importance of education, not only as ameans of developing the mind, but theentire person. She quoted Gandhi, whosaid the following of education:

The real difficulty is that people have noidea of what education truly is. We assessthe value of education in the same manneras we assess the value of land or of sharesin the stock-exchange market. We wantto provide only such education as would

enable the student to earn more. We hardlygive any thought to the improvement of thecharacter of the educated. The girls, we say,do not have to earn; so why should they beeducated? As long as such ideas persistthere is no hope of our ever knowing the truevalue of education.

were working with chemicalsand in hazardous conditions.

It is said that the police havetaken into custody as many as20 brokers and employersinvolved in child and bondedlabour. A police officialdescribed the high techvigilance used by the owners with CCTVCameras monitoring the work of thesechildren. They also mentioned that thosewho did not perform were beaten. Thechildren were not provided blankets or warmclothes.

The rescue operation was a part of OperationSMILE, a month long programme initiatedby the Home Ministry on New Year‘s Day thisyear, and carried out by the CID department.As they had not given prior information

about it to the otherdepartments, the people of theLabour Department (NCLP)and the Child WelfareDepartment were taken bysurprise and did not know howto handle the huge number ofchildren suddenly brought to

them.

Though the TV news bulletins flashed thenews that the children would beaccommodated in different children‘s homes,at the end of the day, all the children except3 girls were brought to Don BoscoNavajeevan, Ramanthapur. Interestingly, themedia did not realize this and hence therewas no secondary abuse of these childrenby them.

A student asked,‘What gender is 'Computer'?

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher splitthe class into two groups, male and female,and asked them to decide for them-selveswhether computer’ should be a masculine ora feminine noun. Each group was asked togive four reasons for its recommendation.

The men’s group decided that ‘computer’should definitely be of the feminine gender(‘la computadora’), because:

1. No one but their creator understandstheir internal logic;

2. The native language they use tocommunicate with other computers isincomprehensible to everyone else;

3. Even the smallest mistakes are storedin long term memory for possible laterretrieval; and

What gender is Computer? – This is Funny4. As soon as you make a commitment to

one, you find yourself spending halfyour paycheck on accessories for it.

The women’s group, however, concluded thatcomputers should be Masculine (‘elcomputador’), because:

1. In order to do anything with them, youhave to turn them on;

2. They have a lot of data but still can’tthink for themselves;

3. They are supposed to help you solveproblems, but half the time they AREthe problem; and

4. As soon as you commit to one, yourealize that if you had waited a littlelonger, you could have gotten a bettermodel.

The women won.
