Movie Licensing USA’s advertising guidelines state that you may advertise your Family Movie Night as long as you omit the movie’s title and studio name. Here are some clever ways to spread the news of your event!

Include key storylines in your flyers. For example, if you are showing Rango, you could say “watch a charming chameleon sher-iff saves his town from an extended drought” or “Catch the Grizzly who’s ‘smarter than the average bear’ and his sidekick Boo Boo save Jellystone Park” for a Yogi Bear event.

Don’t forget the main characters! Get creative and include a drawing of the minions from Despicable Me or on an image of Shrek and Donkey from Shrek Forever After on posters advertising your movie night. You can find high resolution art at www.movlic.com/k12.

Make use of all school resources. Advertise the time and place of your event on your school’s website or outside marquee and include your event’s details in newsletters and school publications.

Play some tunes from the movie while selling tickets. This works great when showing a film like Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, Lemonade Mouth, or High School Musical 3.

Don’t underestimate the power of speech! Use your morning announcements to give hints about the movie you’ll show and remember to tell everyone you know about your event!

“We had over 300 prepaid attendees and 25 volunteers immediately offered to help. We charged $3 per person or $10 per family, including a hot dog, chips, cookie and a drink. Nearly all of our food and supplies were donated, which made our event that much more successful!”

SUZANNE REINHART, TIFFIN CITY SCHOOLS, OH

“We recently held a movie event at our school called “Good Night, Sleep Tight” as a way to help less fortunate kids at bedtime. Admission to our event was a new book or pair of pajamas to help every child have the simple luxuries of a bedtime story and a good night’s rest.”

HOLLY COBBLE, SUMMIT VIEW MIDDLE SCHOOL, KY

“We used our license to support a little girl who has cancer. Her motto to beat the disease is “Slay The Dragon” so we made that the theme of our movie night showing How To Train Your Dragon. We are selling T-shirts and bracelets with this slogan to raise money for the cause.”

LAURA BRADBURY, FLAT ROCK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MI

“Our high school in Montana shows 10 movie events a year. Being in a small

town where the nearest theater is 45 min away, movie nights are an exciting

event! We’ve found that parents are usually willing to donate the use of a

screen and projector, and we get funding support from our school library.”

JENNIFER FISHER, BAKER HIGH SCHOOL, MT

“Our latest movie night doubled as a fun event and a way for students to gain real world experience in event planning. Our school’s Junior Achievement Club, which teaches students about entrepreneurship and business decisions, paired with my economics class to research, plan and host their own movie event. They found that a double feature helped add more

value to their event and sell more tickets.”

MICHAEL MARKLEY, DOUGLAS COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, CO

“I stopped by the

Movie Licensing

USA booth at a

recent conference.

It was a good way

to get information.

I’m a big believer

in the license!”PATTI FLESER,

DEER PATH MIDDLE SCHOOL, IL

“For admission, each attendee brought a classroom supply from a list that we made from teacher requests. Everyone had a great time and the teachers were thrilled with the stockpile of supplies!”SUSAN WILSON,

WAMPATUCK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MA

“We showed the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie to kick-off our cookie dough fundraiser. Thanks to our morning announcements, we had a turnout of about 400 people! We gave raffle tickets at the door for prizes like a copy of the movie and book. Food sales were a big money-maker totaling around $600.”

RENAE MATTIMOE, HECK QUAW ELEMENTARY, MT
