WE PUBLISH LOCAL AND WORLD’S LATEST HAPPENINGS LEADING JAPANESE DAILY ON ISLAND OF HAWAII | ! VOL. XXXIII HILO, HAWAII, T. H., WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 1941 NO. 8887 Turk Cabinet Meets On Hitler Message jj SIDELIGHTS || SB 109, providing for the re- amortization of Farm Loan mortgages over a 30-year peri - od with past interest payments to be applied on the principal is a measure that should be like rain coming to the dry city of Hilo to the homesteaders of the territory. There’ll be quite a few homestead- ers who feel like remembering the Hawaii delegation of senators with a nice Xmas present when the 1941 Christmas season comes rolling a- round. However, with Senators W. H. “Doc” Hill and Chas H. Sil- va, perhaps they feel better if all these homesteaders affected by the measure, should it become law,. . . and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t after the many hard years these homesteaders suffered in silence . . . . would remember j them at next election time. Even ' if this piece of legislation was i mentioned as one of the GOP planks, we don’t think the sena- tors would balk at receiving some nice sounding letters while the measure is still on the way to the “m ill.” * * * Got a personal call from Sheriff H.K.M. of the Big Isle this after- noon and rather than have one of his officers call upon this humble scribe, walked all the way to the Police Station. Yesterday’s little tip about Sheriff H. K. running against W. H. “Doc” Hill was all talk of the floating kind around i town not coming from him at all, the way our amiable “makai nui” put it. Said the smiling sher- | iff, “Why should I run for the Se- nate, when I can run for the Board and use a little more “kahuna” than these young fellows we have on the board in bringing rain to Hilo in a drought, and don’t for- get just for an easy trick like that, I can pull down $100 per month too at the same time. Again, why jump way over to Honolulu just to get a grand every two years, when I can just as well run for chair- man? Don’t forget the chairman will ultimately appoint the com- missioners of police, if and when the police commission bill goes thru.” Something to that Sheriff... ^ Word coming from Honolulu du- ring the last two or three days in- i dicate that now the legilature is J; training its guns on the tax prob- : lem, especially the personal proper- 1 ty issue. Many inequalities have ! been pointed out during the past ! and with talk of “broadening the i base” a la “Doc” Hill, it looks like • something is coming along in the ' way of taxing intangibles, utili- j ties and perhaps livestock. The j (Continued on Page Four) s NAZI TO NEED MORE EFFORT PRESS REPORTS RAINFALL SHOWS LITTLE EFFECT ON DEFICIENCY Word has been received from the water bureau that the rain- fall has little effect on the vvat- j er shortage. A house to house eanvass is | being made by the plumbers in j order to check up whether pipes are leaking and to warn the public to have them repaired, thus conserving water to some \ extent. With all the schools convening today after a day’s or day and a half's rest the water problem must be considered with the j profound interests of the public. Rainfall for the past two days j indicated .58 and .37 inches res- pectively, reports said. Achi. Judge ! J. Frank McLaughlin, presiding l judge, over-ruled the motion, de- I nying Ota a new trial. [ According to Judge Achi, coun- | sel for Y. Ota, he noted an excep- j tion to the ruling, making known his client’s intention to appeal the case to the territorial supreme court. It is understood that Judge Achi is now preparing his appeal, which he expects to perfect with- in the next thirty days. Y. Ota’s motion for a new trial was based upon the following grounds, it was revealed by his counsel: 1. “Because the Court erred in refusing to give defendant’s re- quested instruction 1; 2. “Because the Court erred in refusing to give defendant's re- quested instructions 6 and 7; 3. “Because the Court erred in j giving over the defendant’s objec -1 tion prosecution’s requested in-1 | structions 6, 7, 8 and 11; 4. “Because the Court erred in | giving over the defendant’s objec- tion the Court’s own instruction in : lieu of prosecution requested in- structions 4 and 5; 5. “Because the Court erred in J overruling the defendant’s objec-; tion to the reception of evidence j offered by the prosecution; 6. “Because the Court erred in ! refusing to receive evidence offer- j ed by the defendant upon the trial; I 7. “Because the Court erred is overruling defendant’s motion to strike out certain allegations cf the information as being more con- clusions of law, unwarranted de- ductions and unsupported by evi- dence and/or preponderance of the evidence; 8. “Because the Court erred in I denying defendant’s waiver of jury trial, the offense being a misde- meanor, cognizable and triable by the District Court in (no justifia- ble reason and/or cause being shown for not instituting same in the District Court) thus depriving the defendant of certain rights and privileges in respect to such waiv- er; 9. “Because the Court erred in denying the defendant’s motion for a directed verdict; 10. “Because the Court erred in denying defendant’s motion in ar- rest of judgment and for the dis- charge of the defendant; 11. “Because the prosecution has failed to prove the material allegations contained in both counts of the information, said in- formation being based upon the af- fidavit of Martin Pence, which al- legations are purely conclusions of law, unwarranted deductions, and not supported by the evidence and/or a preponderance of the evi- dence; 12. “Because of the failure of (Continued on Page Three) DUTCH INDIES ANKARA, Mar. 5 _ The Nazi mission arrived by plane and immediately delivered Adolph Hitler’s special message to President Ismet Inonu today. NIPPON PACT PROGRESSING KWANTUNG KEY POINTS TAKEN BY JAPANESE SUPPLY ROUTE TO CHUNG- KING CUT OFF AS RESULT CANTON, Mar. 5—Japanese for- ces occupied key points on the coast of Kwangtung Province from Kwonghoi near Canton in the east to Pak-hoi in the west, along the Yeung-kong, Tinpak, Shuitung and Leichow peninsula following a Ja- anese surprise attack on Pakhoi on March 3rd, it was announced by the high command of the Japanese Expeditionary forces in south Chi- na at noon today. The steel cordon established by Japanese along the 400-kilometer long coast completely cut off the supply route for the Chungking regime, the communique added. ----------------o -------------------- BORDER DISPUTE NO EFFECT j TO TRADE TALK STATES OFFICIAL * BATAVIA, Mar. 5 — Economic | talks between Yutaka Ishizawa, | Japanese Consul General here and ! J. E. Van Hoogstraten, Chief of | Commerce Department of the Eco- j nomic Ministry, entered the third ! week when they conferred for two hours yesterday. J. H. Ritman, government spok- esman, at the press conference yesterday declared that the parley was going on smoothly. He ex- pressed the opinion that negotia- tions for settlement of the Thai- land - Indo-China border dispute would not affect the Japanese- Netherlands East Indies economic talks. Questioned regarding the reported tension in the Pacific, Ritman replied that East Indies would maintain her independent policy and would not ask for any third power assistance. SOFIA, Mar. 5—British Minister, George Rende! in- formed United States Minister George Searle that Great Britain is breaking relations with Bulgaria today, while the Polish, Dutch and Belgian missions decided late yesterday to severe diplomatic relations with Bulgaria and leave for Istanbul following the British action. The Greek minister was expected to remain tempora- rily, according to reports current locally. Nazi troop movements into Bulgaria and toward the Turk frontiers continued to swell in volume hourly. Mean- while, Nazi reports alleged that the RAF was photograph- ing the country, preparatory to airbombing expeditions. More than 100 small pursuit planes were lined up at the new emergency airport, reports disclosed. ________________ 0 O 0 ------------------------------------------------------------ EDITORIAL ON SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES Rep. Martin Dies, congressional watchdog against un- American activities, declares in Washington according to a United Press dispatch that his house committee investigating un-American acts has in its possession weighty evidence on subversive moves in Hawaii. He further declares that these activities are such that they would “constitute a definite me- nace to national defense." If true and supported by the proper kind of evidence, the declaration attributed to Rep. Martin Dies should not go unheeded. There are many situations and circumstances exist- ing in Hawaii which would draw national attention to Ha- waii unless such an information is checked immediately and the “menace" solved for the sake of national sanity should there be any basis for such an information or evidence being filed in our national capital. In the first place, Hawaii is populated with an over- whelming number of Japanese, both citizens and aliens. We are firm in the belief that subversive activities among these men and women, coming within this group, are practically nil. Again, during the last few days, a leading Honolulu daily has intimated that alien Japanese fishermen might possibly be involved in espionage work. Fortunately, this report was denied the next day in toto by U. S. officials conducting in- vestigations into the alleged violations of U. S. laws by these fishermen, exonerating them from any tinge of having been engaged in espionage against the United States. However, such publicity, whether based upon rumors or hearsay infor- mation does not help the situation when the entire world seems to be virtually “sitting on pins and needles." Samuel W. King, Delegate from Hawaii, (Continued on Page Four) courageously A. Uyeno. Lahaina to Hilo: M. Ikeda. Hawaii Provided With Experiment Stations in Bill The $1,420,977,599 agriculture appropriation bill would provide $67,500 for the agriculture expe- riment station in Hawaii, it was reported to the house by the house agriculture committee. The bill also provides sums for parity payments, $47,973,960 for administration of the sugar act, large general appropriations for distribution to the states and ter- ritories for extension of service and research, $221,716 for coopera- tion with other American repub- lics and $17,500 for United States participation in the international wheat advisory council, the inter- national sugar council and other similar organizations. James T. Jardine, research di- rector of experiment stations of the department of agriculture, told the committee that Hawaii’s de- pendence upon the mainland for its food supply would be of “ma- jor concern in event of an emer- gency in which the islands were isolated.” He also said that from 60 to 65 per cent of the islands’ (Continued on Page Four) CHILD’S SKELETON IS KEY TO ANCIENT SYRIAN CIVILIZATION TOKYO, Mar. 5 With the month-old Tokyo Mediation Conference for settlement of the Thailand-French Indo-China border dispute hinging upon final French reply, expected at noon today, an undercurrent of tension swept through politi- cal and diplomatic circles in the Japanese capital this morn- ing. All the metropolitan dailies devoted prominent front- page space to yesterday evening’s interview between French i Ambassador Charles Arsene Henry and Foreign Minister Yo- suke Matsuoka at which a wide gap was still found in Franco- Japanese viewpoints regarding terms of settlement. Teeth Determine Age Father Doherty said the anthro- pological age of the skeleton was established by the contemporary stone-age tools and weapons found with it. Its age at the time of the child’s death was determined by the teeth. He said the site which he and two other scholars, aided by 44 native workmen, excavated for three years is at the bottom of a cliff in the valley of Antelias, six miles from Beirut. The paper pointed out that Great Britain was considering the j necessity of maintaining control , over the Aegean and Adriatic Seas in order to enforce the economic j blockade of Axis powers, and would defend Greece “to the last” ! as her last and only foothold on the continent. On the other hand, the Yomiuri Shimbun asserted that the fate of the Balkans hung on what attitude Greece would take regarding Ger- many’s stationing her troops in Bulgaria. However, for the present, Germany is trying to obtain re- sults diplomatically instead of by force, the paper stated, pointing out that Joachim von Ribhentrop, [ German Foreign Minister was re- portedly to have met Prince Paul on March 3rd, which led to one re- port alleging that Germany was j pressing for Yugoslavia’s adheren- j ce to the Tri-Power Alliance, while another claimed that Germany was j seeking to have Yugoslavia medi -1 ate in the Italo-Greek conflict. E D I T O R I A LON SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES

Rep. M artin Dies, congressional watchdog against un- Am erican activities, declares in W ashington according to a United P ress dispatch th a t his house comm ittee investigating un-Am erican acts has in its possession w eighty evidence on subversive moves in Hawaii. He fu rth e r declares th a t these activities are such th a t they would “constitu te a definite menace to national defense."

I f true and supported by the proper kind of evidence, the declaration a ttribu ted to Rep. M artin Dies should not go unheeded. There are m any situations and circum stances ex isting in Hawaii which would draw national a tten tion to H awaii unless such an inform ation is checked imm ediately and the “menace" solved fo r the sake of national san ity should there be any basis fo r such an inform ation or evidence being filed in our national capital.

In the f irs t place, Hawaii is populated w ith an overwhelming num ber of Japanese, both citizens and aliens. We a re firm in the belief th a t subversive activities among these m en and women, coming w ithin th is group, are practically nil. Again, during the last few days, a leading Honolulu daily has in tim ated th a t alien Japanese fisherm en m ight possibly be involved in espionage work. Fortunately , th is report was denied the next day in to to by U. S. officials conducting investigations into the alleged violations of U. S. laws by these fisherm en, exonerating them from any tinge of having been engaged in espionage against the United S tates. However, such publicity, w hether based upon rum ors or hearsay inform ation does not help the situation when the en tire world seems to be virtually “s ittin g on pins and needles."

The sandwich is the backbone of the lunch which is packed fo r the child or worker. Since fru its and vegetables are our protective foods, these should be included in the lunch, the women were told. W hite rice and m eat is not a good lunch, it was pointed out. I t is diets such as these th a t lower resistance and make children and grown ups alike susceptible to diseases.

Hailis Setback CYO In Titular Junior League GameMainicht Sportorial

By reg istering a 14-inning victory over Hinode Jrs., th e Pepeekeo nine practically cinched the 1941 Junior Baseball league diadem. They are incidentally the defending champions. The only o ther team th a t have an outside chance to cop the title is Olaa Jrs.

W ith only two more games left on the schedule, Pepeekeo will m eet Olaa, in the championship game, while Hinode J rs . will take on W aiakea Mill in the other. A Peps win will give them the championship, while a Olaa victory wfll cause a two way tie between the two team s, m aking necessary a play-off. Hinodes and W aiakea Mill are out of the running.

The Pepeekeo-Olaa game should be an in teresting one, since Olaas were the only team to paste a defeat on the defending champions’ record. W hether or not the Peps can atone the ir f irs t round defeat will be told th is Sunday.

Despite of the fact th a t the Pepeekeo spots a good pitching s ta ff and an all around well-balanced team , the Olaas may tu rn the table on the Peps .again. The Puna lads are playing g rea t ball in the second round defeating the powerful Hinodes in the f ir s t game and last week se tting back Waiakea Mill.

Like Pepeekeo, Olaa Jrs . also have a fine pitching s ta ff and a good all around' team. As fa r as the playing ability is concerned both team s are evenly m atched and the outcome will undoubtedly be decided on “breaks.”

Yes indeed, all indications point to a g rea t Junior Japanese baseball league championship game th is Sunday and playing safe th is departm ent will call th is game a toss-up.

-The championship jun io r league team will represent H awaii in the coming Japanese Inter-Island Junior Baseball tournam ent which will be held in Honolulu th is year. Pepeekeo represented the Big Island last year.

(Continued from Page One) comes forw ard w ith the sta tem ent th a t he is positive “the Dies Committee would find no more and probably less evidence of subversive activ ity among citizens and residents of Hawaii than in any normal Am erican comm unity.” We w ant to be given a chance to prove and endorse our delegate’s confidence in our citizenry. Citizens of Japanese descent, a group oftentim es in the past made a ta rg e t of un ju st attacks and criticism s, should particularly welcome an opportunity to prove th e ir loyalty to the United S tates. We believe th a t every Am erican born Japanese man and woman living in H awaii welcomes such an investigation coming fo rth from such a congressional committee as th a t headed by Rep. M artin Dies. He has done good work fo r the sake of national safety in th e past and to be given a clean bill of health from such a comm ittee is som ething of a “fea th er in our cap” and we weel certain th a t every Am erican citizen welcomes the chance to come under its scrutiny.

We w ant to go fu rth e r. Any investigation into subversive movements or activities based upon the proper kind of evidence should be conducted by our national governm ent or any of its properly constituted branches particularly a t th is tim e. The waves of the Pacific may appear calm today, but no one can foretell w hat is in store fo r us in the imm ediate fu tu re . Federal officials checking itno the loyalty of U. S. citizens will be engaged in one of the m ost im portan t phases of national safety and unity.

We are certain th a t citizens of Hawaii welcome such a step planned by federal officials. We know th a t citizens of Japanese descent are ready to face the searchlight of fac tfinding and tru th and will gladly assis t in such work, but we w ant to be investigated and help in conducting such a work with a sane, calm attitude. There should be no room for any “w itch h u n t” in Hawaii. Our past h istory as an integral, law- abiding te rrito ry of Uncle Sam ’s big fam ily should be proot enough fo r any official, federal, te rrito ria l o r county. H awaii’s experience and record in the past should not give any “j i t te r s ” to any of our congressman in W ashington.

If there is any doubt, however, in the national capital of Haw aii’s absolute loyalty, we w ant to be given the opportu n ity to dispell the cloud of skepticism and doubt.
