Celebrity chefs hobnobbed with the public at a series of tea parties hosted by The Next 48hOURS at the Good Food & Wine Show: Durban

It is not unusual, today, to meet a woman who balances a chal-lenging career with a plethora of household responsibilities, the

intricacies of modern childcare and a fulfilling social life. She is certainly no longer lauded for her super-hu-man abilities – it is simply expected of her.

The Working Mothers Expo, in partnership with MiWayLife, will be taking place at the Sandton Conven-tion Centre from Friday to Sunday, November 4 to 6. This is the first time that an expo in South Africa will be directly geared to meet the needs of working mothers.

Craig Baker, CEO of MiWayLife, says: “There really is very little in the

way of support for this essential and unique demographic in South Africa. There are a myriad of other lifestyle expos, but nothing which specifically addresses the issues and challenges of being a working mother.

As MiWayLife we recognise the important contribution of work-ing mothers to the economy, which makes this partnership invaluable to us. We hope to see the Working Mothers Expo become a fixture on the expo calendar as a forum for working mothers to share and learn how best to achieve sustainable work-life balance.”

Janice Windt, Managing Director of Working Mothers Expo, explains: “We will offer working mothers

something they desperately need: A space in which to take a precious moment for themselves, share ideas and solutions to match their unique

needs and concerns and to realise that they are not in this alone. They will find a great deal of support and inspiration, all within an environment geared towards making them feel pampered and appreciated.”

One of the most anticipated as-pects of the expo will be the Speak-er’s Corner, which will feature some of the country’s most influential working mothers sharing their inspi-ration and insights into fulfilling the many-faceted roles of wife, partner, mother, business owner, professional, daughter and friend.

Dads/partners get in free with a group/family ticket so they can watch the kids while you listen to a speaker, have a quick manicure at Sorbet or

just grab a Seattle Coffee and take a deep breath.

For the Kids: Check Out BOUNCE’s Extreme Team as they defy gravity and literally BOUNCE off the walls. Don’t miss the REAL Food Café with Kids Passports to healthy food from Fitchef, learn all about maths with ‘Talakani Sesame’ at the Kwa San-lam Village and even have your face painted by the Smudge Art Enter-tainers.

‘Cirque Éloize iD’ will be making its Cape Town debut on Wednesday, November 16, at the Artscape Thea-tre complex and after just fifteen performances, Jozi will get its chance to see this high-energy production that blends breathtaking acrobat-ics and street dance, when it moves to Montecasino’s Teatro for a lim-ited season, opening on Wednesday, November 30 and ending on 24 De-cember. (Tickets are now on sale at Computicket.)

Directed by Jeannot Painchaud and brought to South Africa by lead-ing local promoter, Showtime Man-agement, ‘Cirque Éloize’s iD’ has been enjoyed over the past seven years by more than 1 million spec-tators in over 1000 performances in almost 100 cities across the globe in 30 countries. On stage, there’s speed, powerful performances and a jaw-dropping spectacular trampoline-fi-nale that promises to leave audiences

in awe. Behind the scenes there’s a story, a dream and a host of interest-ing facts and figures.

‘iD’ is one of eleven original pro-

ductions under the Cirque Éloize banner. Positioned at the heart of the renewal of circus arts, this Montre-al-based company has been creat-

ing stirring performances filled with magic for more than 23 years. Boast-ing more than 4000 performances in over 500 cities and 50 countries, the worldwide popularity of Cirque Éloize has seen steady growing over the years. In addition to its touring shows, Cirque Éloize develops custom made concepts for international spe-cial events. To date, more than 1400 events have taken place, seen by over 3 million spectators.

‘iD’ recently played to full houses in London, receiving rave reviews in the process.

Cirque Éloize’s ‘iD’ is a blend of circus arts and urban dance: b-boying/b-girling, breakdance, hip-hop and more.

The scene is set in the heart of a city, in a public space where people seek refuge and a chance to shed their anonymity; a place where iden-tity is forged and individuality is ex-pressed to a stimulating soundtrack

created by composers Jean-Phi Gon-calves (Beast) and Alex McMahon. The company is integrating multi-media for the first time in its ninth original creation, giving this show a unique feel.

Fifteen performers from 14 dis-ciplines help create ‘iD’s’ entertain-ing and resolutely urban universe, in keeping with Cirque Éloize’s tradition of using multidisciplinary performers from around the world.

The show’s first season at Monte-casino three years ago resulted in a sold out signs and a high demand for tickets.

The volume of requests lead to this year’s return SA season, which includes Cape Town for the first time. Audiences in the two cities can look forward to 44 performances by 15 artists including acrobats, aerialists, a trial biker plus hip hop and break dancers in an intimate theatre set-ting.

SHOW: SUDDENlY THE STORMCAST: PAUl SlABOlEPSzY, CHARMAINE WEIR-SMITH, RENATE STUURMAN,DIRECTOR: BOBBY HEANEYVENUE: AUTO & GENERAl THEATRE ON THE SqUARE, SANDTON, UNTIl 19 NO-VEMBERREVIEWER: PETER FElDMAN

Paul Slabolepszy’s acclaimed play, ‘Suddenly the Storm’, has been brought back af-ter its successful run at The

Market Theatre in June. It’s now at Daphne Kuhn’s inti-

mate Auto & General Theatre on the Square and several adjustments have had to be made to the production. It is still effective - and even boasts running water.

Seeing the play for the second time has its drawbacks. It robs one of the twists and element of surprise that greets one in the first viewing. The tension, too, is gone because one is familiar with the build-up.

Still, ‘Suddenly the Storm’ is a fas-cinating slice of theatre which em-braces the dynamics of today’s South Africa, while drawing from the apart-heid past and its inbuilt horror.

We have moved on since the democratic elections of 1994 and the country and its people have un-dergone a cathartic change. One such couple is the Combrincks, Dwayne(Slabolepszy) and Shanell (Charmaine Weir-Smith), who exist on a plot on the Far East Rand where

the violent Dwayne, a former apart-heid policeman, earns a living as a welder and also freelancers as a debt collector who gets his man through fear and intimidation. His trusty bat is not far away - and he knows how to wield it.

The couple are in a crisis. The younger, less-than-bright Shanell, is having an affair unbeknown to her husband, and her job seems to be to

placate Dwayne’s frightening mood swings. His whole demeanour chang-es when his black friend Jonas, whom he grew up with on the plot, is killed.

On opening Jonas’ locker Dwayne discovers a rhino horn wrapped in a bag, an object that leads to a great deal of speculation.

The characters Slabolepszy fo-cuses on here are not unfamiliar to students of the playwright’s work -

sad individuals who’ve been cheated by life and have never quite realised their dreams.

These are the tough, disillusioned working class, blue-collar people on the fringe of society who struggle daily with life’s little ironies. Since democracy they find, like many white South Africans, that they no longer hold the key to power - and the an-ger and resentment bubbles just be-low the surface as the new political realities sink in.

A third character, the attractive, well-dressed and eloquent Namhla (Renate Stuurman) materialises, seek-ing out Dwayne for a job that needs to be done. The dynamics of the play shift into top gear as the three char-acters interlock and as a big storm approaches (and the sound effects kick in very loudly) we realise that Namhla is burdened with another, more urgent agenda.

The impeccable production, under Bobby Heaney’s guiding hand, crack-les with energy and sharply delivered dialogue, especially in scenes where Dwayne and Shanelle cross swords.

She represents the “poppy” ele-ment to the story, while Dwayne is the angry alpha male. Namhle’s ap-pearance reflects the emerging black educated society now making their mark in the country. She was educat-ed in England when her parents went into exile in the early 1980s, and her touch of a better class is telling.

Answers to questions that have

remained buried for 40 years drive the play and Dwayne’s incandescent rage, which explodes at a moment’s notice, is the most unsettling ele-ment in the play’s structure. In this role Slabolepszy shows a degree of restraint in his interpretation, as tor-rents of words flow from his angry lips, especially when he has had a few dops of his favourite brandy, Klippies.

Charmaine Weir-Smith is superb as the cheap-looking Shanelle, who reveals hidden secrets to Namhla af-ter another bout with the bottle, and Renate Stuurman, as Namhla, brings it all into perspective with her revela-tions.

The production remains compel-ling and is played out on a multi-lay-ered, dusty looking set, with its many appealing details. Wesley France’s lighting design also adds immeasur-ably to the mood of the piece.

Another successful facet is the pairing of director Heaney with Slabolepszy and with all these ele-ments in place this makes for the perfect theatrical storm.

Join Robin Hood and his merry thieving gang for a festive panto adventure

‘Johnny Boskak is Feeling Funny’ is a powerful play from the satirical pen of Greig Coetzee, written in rhyming couplets rapped out by his anti-hero Johnny. Showing at the The Market Theatre from November 16 to De-cember 4, the play’s words – that feel more like lyrics – express the dis-content of the dispossessed working-class white South African as he sets off on an epic reckless rock ‘n roll adventure. The fast-paced show blends physical theatre with storytelling as Johnny romps through life, dodgy bars, en-counters with gangsters and falls for a “chick” as bad-assed as himself in this play where action and adventure meets social commentary. This multi-award-winning play is a spin-off from Coetzee’s previous hit ‘White Men with Weapons’, and stars Craig Morris as the down-and-out

anti-hero Johnny. The show is directed by Roslyn Wood-Morris and features original music by the late Syd Kitchen.Morris has shown that he has a knack for finding the soul of Coetzee’s troubled characters, and this actor and author combo last collaborated for the show ‘Blood Orange’, which played at The Market Theatre in 2007.‘Johnny Boskak is Feeling Funny’ won the Naledi Award for Best Cut-ting Edge Production in 2015 and earned the 2015 National Arts Fes-tival Golden Ovation Award. Mor-ris was also nominated for a Naledi Award in the category Best Actor in a Lead Role (Male) for his portrayal of Johnny.

Izak Davel as Robin Hood and Carmen Pretorius as Maid Marian

Riding through the royal forest of Sherwood on a glorious May morn-ing, you don’t have a care in the world. Then you hear a bird call, the faint rustling of trees, and sud-denly a man armed with a longbow appears in your path. He wears a feathered cap, or is that a hood? You can’t see the man’s face clearly, but you don’t have to. He is dressed in Lincoln green, the colour of Rob-in Hood – the most famous English outlaw of all time.

Janice Honeyman’s brand new pantomime adventure, ‘Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood’, will give festive season audiences a re-working of the popular classic when it takes to The Mandela stage at Jo-burg Theatre from November 5 to December 30.

The plot combines the babes-lost-in-the-forest story with the Robin Hood legend. The young children, Hansel and Gretel, come to visit their uncle, the Sheriff of Not-tingham, little suspecting that he is plotting their demise. But never fear, help is at hand – in the shape of Robin and his Merry Men, plus Maid Marian and the Spirit of the Forest.

Playing the role of Robin in his first Joburg Theatre pantomime is Izak Davel, best known to TV view-ers as ‘Isidingo’s’ arrogant Bradley Haines, and whose hit recordings include ‘Verlei My’, ‘Is Jy In Of Is Jy Uit’ and ‘Vreesloos’.

Much loved panto star Desmond Dube returns to Joburg Theatre to play the jovial Friar Tuck; ‘Idols’

finalist Bongi Mthombeni features in his fifth Joburg Theatre panto-mime as the dandy Will Scarlet; and leading lady of South African musi-cal theatre, ‘Kate Normington’, will surely be wildly comic as Silly Sylvi-ana, the Spirit of the Forest.

Also featured in ‘Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood’ are Graham Hopkins as the villainous Norman the Nasty, Sheriff of Nottingham, L

J Urbani as the ever-popular panto Dame Emmarentia Ugly, Phumi Mn-cayi as chief lieutenant of the Merry Men, Little John, award-winning actress Candida Mosoma as Much the Miller’s Son (written with an inevitable panto twist), Carmen Pre-torius as Robin’s love interest, Maid Marian, and Jaco Van Rensburg as the wandering minstrel, Alan-a-Dale.

Writer/director Honeyman once again collaborates with producer Bernard Jay on their sixteenth Jo-burg Theatre pantomime together. Rowan Bakker joins the team this year as musical director; Nicol Sher-aton returns as choreographer; the eagerly anticipated, over-the-top sets and costumes are once again supplied by Qdos in the UK.

The earliest surviving Robin Hood ballad, ‘Robin Hood and The Monk’, dates from the 15th cen-tury. Subsequently, the legend has become one of the most popular movie and TV stories of all time, the most recent mass market adaption being the 2010 movie ‘Robin Hood’, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe.

Jamaican artist Etana, ‘The Strong One’

local and international acts for two-city All Nations Reggae Fest

The All Nations Reggae Fest 2016 is set to electrify Joburg and Cape Town within the next few weeks. Promoting company All

Nations has been pushing local and in-ternational reggae music and artists in South Africa for two decades, their most recent shows in the country having in-cluded such names as Capleton, Luciano and Sizzla.

This year’s All Nations Reggae Fest – set to take place in Jozi on Novem-ber 5 at Carfax in Newtown; and in the Mother City on November 12 at the Cas-tle of Good Hope - will witness five in-ternational reggae artists on one stage, three of which hail from Jamaica, namely Bushman, Etana and Turbulence. Soul-jah Luv hails from Zimbabwe, while Malawian Lucius Banda rounds out the lineup. All five international artists will be backed by the all African seven piece, All Nations Band.

Opening the Johannesburg show will be top SA reggae and dancehall artists: The Lucky Dube Band featuring Skeleton Blazer, Mad Koolia, Teedo, Commander Bee, E Man and MC Bada Bada. Opening the Cape Town show will be: The Rudi-mentals, Blak Kalamawi, Yagga Flames, Bashmouth Sound, Triple Crown and Ras Reggie.

Hailing from St Thomas in Jamaica, Dwight Duncan aka Bushman, will be making his debut appearance in SA this year. Duncan started out as a DJ/selec-tor known as Junior Melody. His debut album ‘Nyah Man Chant’, produced by

Steely and Clivie and released in 1997, scored two major hits: ‘Grow your Natty’ and ‘Call de Hearse’, developing a global fan base in the process. The album was described in ‘Rough Guide to Reggae’ as “As good an example of modern cultural singing as you could hope to find.” It was Steely who suggested Junior change his name to Bushman. Since his debut, Bushman has released several albums, one of the most notable recent releases being 2011’s ‘Bushman Sings the Bush Doctor’ - his tribute to the legendary Peter Tosh, co-produced with the power house Donovan Germain (Penthouse).

The album smashed its way to the num-ber seven spot on the Reggae Billboard charts after just two weeks.

Etana’s name means “The Strong One” in Swahili, and it’s a title she strives to live up to with her music and presence. Since debuting in 2006 with the single ‘Wrong Address’, the Jamaican-born singer has established herself as one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in reggae, blazing a new trail in a gen-re that has long been male-dominated. Etana’s story begins in August Town, a treacherous but culturally rich garrison community in eastern Kingston that has produced such musical talents as Sizzla and Israel Vibration.

Growing up, Etana’s home was filled with music, but it was country and west-ern that she recalls leaving the biggest impression. “Every Sunday was country music day,” says Etana. “A lot of peo-ple in Jamaica play gospel music on a Sunday, or old rub-a-dub. In my house it was country, like Dolly Parton. Tammy Wynette was my favorite of all the artists my mom used to play.”

Etana has released four albums, the most recent being ‘I Rise’, which was re-leased in October 2014 and entered the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart at number seven, and topped the chart in its second week of release. It remained at the number one spot for four weeks. Etana was the first female to top the reg-gae billboard chart in over fifteen years.

Sheldon Campbell aka Turbulence hails from the Hungry Town district of

Kingston. Like many other underprivi-leged youngsters, he began singing at school and church before serving his dancehall apprenticeship on sound-sys-tems. Originally known as Double Trou-ble, a friend suggested that he should change his name to Turbulence, because of the disturbance he’d cause, and his ca-pacity “to upset Babylon”. Turbulence’s righteous lyrics and straight-from-the-heart deliveries have already earned him widespread acclaim. Turbulence has built up an extensive fan base after releasing almost twenty albums and touring the world. His biggest hit to date is ‘Noto-rious’, which rapidly outgrew its reggae and dancehall roots to become a huge star in the film ‘Rise Up’ (Reggae Star), which documents the progress of three young artists from Jamaica.

both shows in their respective cities will kick off at 5pm and is expected to last until 4am. tickets priced at r250 can be booked through www.allnations.nutickets.co.za; or will be r300 at the door.

Whisky makers to strut their stuff in Sandton

The world’s largest whisky event, the Whisky Live Festival, is once again gearing up for another year, showcasing the finest whiskies from around the world. The event will be taking place in the Sandton Con-vention Centre from November 9 to 11. This year’s festival will see single malt brand, Glenfiddich, introducing the Glenfiddich Experimental Se-ries, a new range that combines the brand’s passion for pushing Scotch whisky boundaries and collaborating with trailblazers beyond the world of whisky.

Festival goers will have a chance to sample the brand’s experimental creation, the Glenfiddich IPA Experi-

ment, the world’s first single malt Scotch whisky finished in India Pale Ale (IPA) craft beer casks. Also on hand will be Glenfiddich Project XX, the result of a collaboration between 20 whisky experts and Glenfiddich’s Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, who developed one unexpected whisky by bringing together 20 very special single malts.

Glenfiddich will also exhibit their wide range, which includes the 12 Year Old, 15 year old Solera, as well as the 18 Year Old variant and the 21 Year Old.

International house music artist Stimming will be bringing his ‘Alpe Lusia’ Album Tour to Jozi on Friday, November 11.The

famed producer will be rocking Truth Nightclub in Midrand from 9pm onwards on the evening.“I want people to see me as an evolving artist, where you never know what exactly it is that you’ll get - but you know that it’s Stim-ming,” says the artist, who made his mark at a relatively young age.Stimming already played the violin, piano and drums at the age of 10. Aged 16, he began producing mu-sic with a computer – something he soon realised was his “destiny”. “I think if more producers would in-clude their own mind and feelings into their music the whole scene would be much more flavoured and diverse which would be good for all of us - at least in an entertaining way,” says the producer. With his future path clearly in mind, Stimming moved to Hamburg at age 19. In 2006 he met Solomun and Adriano, who just set up their la-bel Diynamic Music that same year, on which Stimming soon started releasing. His breakthrough hit, 2008’s ‘Una Pena’, made the elec-tronic world sit up and take notice. 2009 saw him release his debut al-bum ‘Reflections’ to great acclaim, fortifying his reputation as one of the most exciting new producers of his generation and scoring him an Ibiza DJ Award in the category of

Best Newcomer.Stimming’s productions are filled with a multitude of his own unique field recordings, of which he never uses the same sample twice. Nothing is sacred; sources of sound have in-cluded a coffee machine, children’s toys, loose change, a vinyl pressing plant, a 22.000 HP ship engine and an Ikea pizza cutter. “You just can’t get that type of material out of a synthesizer. And depending on how much I tweak it afterwards it can be a very natural “on this earth” kind of feeling, or the exact opposite.”Stimming’s second album, ‘Liquo-rice’ eschewed the normal kick-clap/snare template by and large to ex-plore more interesting and progres-sive territories, but always with that trademark sense of texture, emotion and discovery. Before the release of his third, self-titled longplayer, Stimming did something quite mo-mentous: together with a friend he reworked his ‘November Morning’ track into a classical arrangement and had the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester perform and record the new version.LP number four is called ‘Alpe Lu-sia’ and has been produced in a se-cluded alpine hut in northern Italy. In order to refrain from distractions and present-day influences, Stim-ming isolated himself for a month to create the first, real conceptual album of his career. And innovation kept coming: Stim-ming recently played multiple per-

formances on the 4D sound system – one of the most forward think-ing sound systems worldwide. It al-lows him to move individual sound sources in all four dimensions in real time while the audience stands in-side the music itself.Stimming performs all over the globe, from large-scale music festi-vals to the most intimate club set-tings. A special bond exists between the artist and South Africa, though, where his frequent visits have earned him a loyal fan base.

LAST WEEK:

FIlM: HEll OR HIGH WATERCAST: JEFF BRIDGES, CHRIS PINE, BEN FOSTER GIl BIRMINGHAMDIRECTOR: DAVID MACkENzIE

A story about the collision of the Old and New West, two brothers – Toby (Chris Pine), a straight-living, divorced father trying to make a better life for his son; and Tan-ner (Ben Foster), a short-tempered ex-con with a loose trigger finger - come together to rob branch after branch of the bank that is foreclos-ing on their family land. The hold-ups are part of a last-ditch scheme

to take back a future that power-ful forces beyond their control have stolen from under their feet. Vengeance seems to be theirs until they find themselves in the cross-hairs of relentless, foul-mouthed Texas Ranger Marcus (Jeff Bridges) looking for one last triumph on the eve of his retirement. As the broth-ers plot a final bank heist to com-plete their plan, a showdown looms at the crossroads where the last honest lawman and a pair of broth-ers with nothing to live for except family collide.

The suspenseful heist thriller

has a storied history that hurtles way back to 1903’s ‘The Great Train Robbery’ – and since then, it seems every generation has pro-duced its own revealing visions of the often coolly atmospheric genre. Like many of its predecessors, Hell or High Water builds to a show-down between lawmen and out-laws in the desolate borderlands of America’s extreme Southwest. But that’s where the comparisons end. For this is not your father’s bank-robbing saga of black-hatted bad guys and upstanding sheriffs. This is the Western re-jiggered as mor-ally complex, bitingly humorous and set in a new West where the very banks getting raided are now the most degenerate and cruel of villains themselves.

The film is the ninth feature from award-winning UK filmmaker David Mackenzie – whose body of work also encompasses ‘Starred Up’, ‘Hallam Foe’, ‘Asylum’ and ‘Young Adam’ – and one that has taken him new places, geographi-cally and cinematically.

“As a filmmaker I’m always drawn to stories which are not black and white in terms of their moral shades, so one of the elements I was interested in of this film was this thing that I call ‘redemptive criminality’, where good people do bad things for good reasons. I think there’s something really interest-ing about that balance, and that is definitely an area of attraction for me as a filmmaker, and in particular in this film,” says Mackenzie.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has pitched another one of their characters into mainstream cine-ma. This time it’s Doctor Stephen

Strange, an arrogant, ego-driven neuro-surgeon who discovers that there is more to heaven and earth than meets the eye.

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch,

one of cinema’s most versatile players, assumes the mantle of Doctor Strange. Adopting an American accent, he takes the character through all the bizarre twists and turns that the story demands as it embraces the mystic arts and alter-native dimensions that go beyond human understanding.

After a tragic motor accident, Doctor Strange discovers that his hands are no longer the instruments of healing upon which his career was built. He must now seek an alternative cure to get his lucra-tive career back on track. He travels to Kathmandu in Nepal seeking this miracle cure and ends up at the feet of a Celt-ic mystic known as The Ancient One (a shaven-haired Tilda Swinton) who has the psychic power to open his mind to al-ternative realities. He needs to believe in the otherworldly, even though his natural intellect dismisses it as ridiculous.

Through sweat and toil, Strange eventually discovers his inner truth and embarks on a spiritual journey that will transform him forever and give him un-told powers.

The first half of the film, with its com-pelling argument on alternative realities, certainly grabs one’s imagination, but director Scott Derrickson then embarks on a psychedelic journey that blows the mind. The constant action sequences ex-plode in your face and a great deal of the carefully orchestrated build up is dis-sipated by a surfeit of giddy surrealist images.

The Marvel Comic Universe has never shied away from psychedelia, from ‘Ant-Man’s’ voyage into cosmic inner space to the progressive-rock cityscapes of Thor. This escapade, however, takes the genre to a whole new level. It’s a freaky, eye-popping extravaganza. Christopher Nolan’s dreamscapes in ‘Inception’ look amateur in comparison as cityscapes are

folded, bended and upended to stupen-dous effect

The supporting cast works hard, too, with Mads Mikkelsen as the evil Kaecilius, the villain of the piece; Chiwetel Ejiofor, as Mordo, who helps guide Strange in his new world; and Rachel McAdams as Dr Christine Palmer, a fellow doctor and ex-girlfriend, who worked side-by-side in the hospital with Strange.

Vividly depicted in 3D, ‘Doctor Strange’ certainly has its moments, but its freewheeling, gravity-defying buoy-ancy in the end becomes far too over-whelming and you will leave the cinema positively reeling from this total on-slaught on the senses.

By the way, don’t leave before the credits are over because there is a nice little exchange between Doctor Strange and the god Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, whose glass of beer seems to have a life of its own.

The Next 48hOURS • Fooding Around

I have just returned from the Good Food and Wine Show in Durban, and I have to say it was a won-derful event and I had a fabulous

time interacting with friends and fans and look forward to my return. Dur-ban is where I was born and it holds such wonderful memories for me.

Growing up in Durban, there was Indian food all around me. An Indian family lived next door to us and became very good friends, and there were several Indian traders in our neighbourhood. So knowing the cuisine and loving it, whenever I smell Indian food I want to eat it straightaway.

Miriam and her husband Omar ran a little greengrocer on the corner of the street where I lived. They started very early in the day and ended late, and took all their meals at the back of the store, where Miriam had set up a small space with a table and a two-plate stove. She had two young sons and her oldest son, Imran, played with my son Wade. He spent most of his time with me while they worked and my reward was cooking along-side Miriam a few times a week.

I loved watching and learning from Miriam as she enveloped my kitchen with aromas that filled my head and mouth with a longing to taste India for real.

She taught the magic of temper-ing and blending spices that would transform the simplest of ingredients into the most mouth-wateringly de-licious dishes.

She taught that there was rice other than long-grain; I was intro-duced to basmati and she showed me how to cook it, plain or infused with saffron and cumin, curry leaves and coriander. She took plain yoghurt to new heights for me by stirring in toasted cumin, freshly chopped chil-lies, mint or coriander, grated carrots or cucumber to serve beside a dish.

And she taught me that a curry could be made from vegetables and pulses and not just from meat alone.

Here’s to you, Miriam. Thank you for all you imparted on me.

Let’s cook!

lamb, Brinjal and Butter Bean CurryServes 4 to 6

I just love the silky flesh of brinjals. I also make this curry with minced beef and serve it with roti, so eve-ryone gets to make their own Indian wrap.

Ingredients for the Curry:• 2 long, large, firm brinjals, cubed• 3 Tbs vegetable oil• 3 Tbs unsalted butter• 3 large onions, thinly sliced• 5 cm piece fresh ginger, grated• 15 ml coriander seeds, toasted

and ground• 15 ml cumin seeds, toasted and

ground• 5 cardamom pods, toasted and

ground• 5 ml turmeric• 10 ml chilli powder• 1 fresh green chilli, slit• 1.5 kg lean cubed lamb or lamb

knuckle• 2 large ripe tomatoes, chopped

• 8 cloves garlic, crushed• Salt, to taste• About 1 ½ cups boiling water• ¾ tsp ground cinnamon• 2 cups cooked butter beans• 10 curry leaves (optional)• 3 Tbs chopped fresh coriander

Ingredients for the Raita:• 2 cups thick Greek yogurt• 1 medium English cucumber,

washed• 1 tsp roasted ground cumin• 1 Tbs chopped fresh mint• 1 Tbs chopped fresh coriander• 2 tsp fresh lemon juice• Salt to taste

Method:To make the curry, salt the Brin-jal cubes and let them sweat for 20 minutes.Rinse under cold water and pat dry. Heat two tablespoons of oil in a large frying pan and brown the brinjals lightly - don’t cook them completely. Set aside till needed.Heat the butter and one tablespoon of oil in a large saucepan, add the onions and let them cook gently till they reduce down to two-thirds of their original size. Add a few drops of water if need be to stop them from burning. Now stir in the ginger, ground co-riander, cumin, cardamom, turmeric and chilli powder, and cook stirring for a few minutes to release the fra-grance of the spices, adding a few spoonful’s of warm water at a time to stop them from burning.Stir in the fresh chilli and lamb, and cook with spices for 5 minutes. Don’t let it stick. Add the tomatoes and garlic, season with salt and cover with a lid, simmering for 20 minutes.

Lift the lid and add the boiling wa-ter, just enough to cover the lamb, and stir in the cinnamon. Simmer till the lamb is tender; about 50 to 60 minutes. While the curry is simmering away, make the raita. Place the yogurt in a bowl. Peel half of the cucumber and chop very finely. Dice the other half (with the skin on) and stir all the cucumber into the yoghurt with the cumin, mint, coriander and lemon juice. Season with salt and add a lit-tle more cumin if you like. Set aside in the fridge until needed.Just before you are ready to serve, add the beans, brinjals and curry leaves to the lamb, and cook till warmed through. Stir in the fresh coriander and serve with roti or steamed rice, and the cucumber and mint raita.

Tip: Cook the onions nice and slow till they cook right down. The sug-ars cook out of them this way, giving you an amazing curry.

Osman’s new restaurant can be found in the heart of Wynberg

WHICH ONE IS YOURS?

Former MasterChef South Af-rica contestant and culinary craftsman, Ozzy Osman, has launched Ozzy’s Kitchen, a

casual fine-dining halaal eatery lo-cated at international fashion house and experimental hub, BLU, in the heart of Wynberg.

Having trained in South Africa’s top kitchens – including the prestig-ious Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town and The Saxon under world-renowned chef David Higgs – Osman brings unique perspectives to fine dining and believes wholeheart-edly in the value of “honest” cook-ing, spiced up with his signature flair for the outlandish.

“Everyone will find something they love here, from the adventur-ous eater to the person who wants to experience familiar flavours and dishes that taste like home,” he says. “My food is about honesty, and each menu has been designed with every type of palate in mind and contains only the finest locally-sourced ingre-dients.

“Expect to see new cooking and food preparation techniques, gor-geous plating and a modernist take on classic cuisine. Essentially, this is

me on a plate.”A simple daytime café menu is

available on weekdays and features light meals at affordable prices. The

fine dining menus are reserved for weekends when guests can experi-ence Osman’s eclectic creations while taking in the casual atmosphere. A banqueting menu will also be avail-able for corporate events and special functions.

Ozzy’s Kitchen was born when Os-man realised that he and BLU Man-aging Director, Reza Motani, shared a vision of a space in which “self-ex-pression, diversity and unconvention-al ideas could flourish.” The result is a “destination” eatery that offers an all-round lifestyle experience.

“I see BLU growing into a fun, contemporary and experimental space where people would be happy to come and spend some time doing more than just shopping for clothes,” says Motani.

“We’re building a lifestyle desti-nation where people can indulge in experiences that are meaningful to them. The space is a melting pot of artistry, creativity and collaboration, where you can feel at home in your own skin and really enjoy yourself,

and Ozzy’s Kitchen adds a new and exciting dimension to that mix,” adds Motani.

While a fine-dining restaurant and trendy hangout-spot is considered a first for the bustling Sandton suburb of Wynberg, Osman and Motani be-lieve that this adds to the appeal of the restaurant’s ambience, giving it an unassuming, informal feel.

Wynberg is also an up-and-com-ing urban district inspired by the suc-cess of the rejuvenations of Braam-fontein and the Maboneng Precinct, and stands to benefit from this de-velopment.

ozzy’s Kitchen is located at 55 andries street in Wynberg, sand-ton, and is open Mondays to thursdays from 8am to 5pm; Fri-days and saturdays from 8am to 9pm; and sundays for casual fine dining from 9am until 3pm.For more information, visit www.ozzyskitchen.co.za.

The GTX1060 is VR Ready

By Imran khan

Power on a budgetThe world of PC gaming is surg-ing ahead and as always if you do not have the right hardware, then you won’t be able to play the latest games.

We remember the first time we purchased a graphics card with just 128 megabytes of memory, just to play ‘Splinter Cell’. At the time that was around R1600 - and we bought it. Graphics cards have come a long way since then, with more power and finally the pricing is starting to settle.

GeForce have finally revealed the South African pricing of the Geforce GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti series of graphics cards.

The main difference is the mem-ory, cooler design and clock speeds. You can now pick up a GTX1050 for around R2899 and the Ti version for R3500 (www.evetech.co.za). We did the research and found that the Ge-force GTX 1060 3 gigabyte version is only R3899, which is not too off

from the 1050 series cards. What it all comes down to is your needs and budget. Our choice would be to go with the 1060 series card which also has dual fans to keep it cool and double the amount of CUDA cores.

samsung Gear Fit 2Smartwatches are a dime a dozen, but there is always something that

stands out from the pack. The Gear Fit 2 is finally available in South Af-rica. Built into a sturdy little chassis is a GPS, Heart rate monitor, Amoled curved screen and data tracker. It also works seamlessly with S-Health, Samsung’s propriety fitness applica-tion. Whether it’s running, cycling, rowing or just walking in the mall, the Auto Tracking feature will keep

accurate track of your movement.Samsung have also released a

handy media play function alongside the Fit 2 called the ‘Gear IcoX’. These include a pair of Bluetooth enabled earphones with 4 gigabytes of mem-ory that runs Android. The Gear IconX is truly cord-free earbuds that can

track fitness information and provide users with feedback on their running performance. Both the Gear Fit2 and Gear IconX are optimized to enhance training and help improve users’ fit-ness levels, whether users are training for a marathon or taking a daily stroll through the neighborhood.
