Junie B First Grader at last by: Barbara
Park Meet the worlds funniest First
Grader Junie B Jones. Hooray, hooray
for a brand new school year. Being in
First Grade means having to get use to a
whole new classroom and a whole new
teacher.
The Night Before First Grade by:
Natasha Wing It’s the night before the
Big Day-first grade. Penny is excited to
start the new year with her best friend
right beside her in the same classroom.
If You Plant a Seed by Kadir Nelson. A
rabbit and his mouse pal are excited to
harvest a few crops, but when the birds
come to share in the spoils, rabbit and
mouse have to make a decision. Will
they plant seeds of selfishness or seeds
of kindness? The importance of choosing
kindness is clear but what really makes
this book shine is Nelson’s fantastic illus-
trations, and in particular one delightful-
ly amusing spread of the birds on the
lookout for seeds. This is an utterly
charming picture book to teach about
kindness.
The Smallest Girl in the Smallest Class
by Justin Roberts, illustrated by Christian
Robinson. Sally may be small but she is
the most observant kid in the class. She
notices everything, especially when
someone else is being bullied or teased.
Sally decides the right thing to do is to
stand up for others, and teach her peers
about kindness. I liked this book a lot
and how it emphasized that you can be
kind no matter what your stature—
physically or socially
The Night Before Summer Vacation
By; Natasha Wing A little girl and her
family are getting ready to go on vaca-
tion or at least their trying to. In the
effort to pack everything needed there’s
bound to be something overlooked.
That is what provides a funny ending.
See You in Second Grade By Miriam
Cohen. Wishing goodbye to each other
at the end-of-the-year first grade beach
picnic, Jim, Paul, Danny, George, and
Anna Maria talk about their first grade
experiences and realize they will miss
their teacher.
Owen Foote, Second Grade Strong-
man by Stephanie Greene. Owen, a
second grader who is being teased for
his small size, discovers that his friend
Joseph is just as concerned about being
overweight, and they share their fear of
being humiliated by the school nurse on
the annual weigh-in day.
Second Grade Star by Nancy Alberts
Dreaming of becoming a star at the
forthcoming Spring concert, Kelly copes
with disappointment and jealousy when
her friends land important parts and
she is assigned to folding programs,
until she learns how to shine brightly on
her own.
