01. Welcome

Dear sports friends,

allow me to invite you warmly at Junior World Orienteering Championships which will be held in Košice and near surroundings.

I am very pleased that Košice is the host city of this event of world importance especially in such an attractive sport as orienteering is. I am fully confi dent that young runners from all over the world will fi nd not only interesting courses in demanding rugged terrain, but also they will discover unforgettable and colorful atmosphere of our city boasting with the largest protected town reserve in Slovakia and supported by hospitality and friendliness of local inhabitants.

Since Košice is traditional center of orienteering in Slovakia with a large number of experienced organizers I believe that this event they organize will fulfi ll your expectations in all.

We would like also to do our best during the Junior World Orienteering Championship so that we could follow the success in organizing of Ice Hockey World Championship 2011 in Košice.

In this way we would like to offer you another invitation for next visit of Košice as Košice will hold the title European Capital of Culture in 2013.

I wish you dear competitors, team offi cials and guests you could say after fi nishing Junior World Orienteering Championship that you had spent unforgettable event which was worth to organize in Košice and surroundings.

02. The Host City Košice

The metropolis of eastern Slovakia and the second largest city of Slovakia (population roughly 250,000) offers a wider kinds of services than anywhere outside of Bratislava. The city with mostly industrial tradition boasts with its attractive and extensive old town, gathered around a pedestrian high street and the town square. Most of the city’s restaurants as well as hotels are situated around the main square or in surrounded places.

The signifi cant history of the Košice City dates back to the late Middle Ages, the period from which dates its well known cathedral too. In those times was Košice arguably the entire region’s most important centre outside of Budapest. It served as a key crossroad for traders from Italy, Germany and Netherlands as well as those of other eastern European cultures. Since that period the city declined more than once only to gain the importance again, above all in recent few decades as a major industrial centre.

The attractions of Košice are focused around the pedestrians-only main square, one of Slovakia’s vigorous. The dominant of the city is the Gothic Cathedral of St Elizabeth, and its neighbour The Empire State Theatre, the home of opera and ballet which offers performances in Slovak, Hungarian and Roma languages, or by puppets, all in the vicinity. The city’s museums concentrate their interest on historical aspects of art, culture and technology, and most of them are situated not a long way from the main square. Beneath the square itself lies more to see: extensive excavations have unveiled unique remnants of medieval fortifi cations and other traces of the city’s past.

In a fi eld of business is Košice a leader in heavy industry. One of Slovakia’s largest plants of any kind is the steel mill currently runned by U. S. Steel, Around this complex a number of international suppliers and processors have clustered. Košice is also a major transit hub. Its universities offer degrees in most specializations, including medicine, law, engineering and veterinary science (the latter being Slovakia’s only such university), several of which are offered in English especially for non-native students.

Regarding traffi c Košice offers daily connections to Prague, Bratislava and Wien by plane; and its main train station has direct daily connections to Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow and Kiev. A highway (E50) runs to Prešov and part-way to the High Tatras and the Spiš regions, and other roads connect it to all other directions.

Nearby attractions, all within about an hour’s drive, include the beautifully-restored The Krásna Hôrka castle, and the huge 19th-century hunting chateau of Betliar. Natural attractions include several caves registered as UNESCO Cultural Heritage sites, a mineral geyser, and extensive hiking trails – as well as the aptly-named The Slovak Paradise.

Košice is known as a city with rich sporting tradition. Every year since 1924, there is organized International Pace Marathon. There was also hosted many signifi cant world events, among other World University Orienteering Championships 2006 and World Championships in ice-hockey 2011. Junior World Orienteering Championships 2012 will be other signifi cant events which will take place in Košice in the close future.

06. Competition Rules

The Competition Rules for IOF Foot Orienteering Events (version valid from 1st January 2011) shall be applied to participation in Junior World Orienteering Championships 2012. For further regulations details please refer to the Competitions Rules on the IOF website www.orienteering.org

07. Classes and Participation Restrictions

W20, M20

All competitors must be born in 1992 or later and shall have full passport-holding citizenship of the country they are representing.

08. Entries

The deadline for preliminary entries is April 30, 2012. The entry form will be available on the JWOC2012 website. This form must be used. The following information is obligatory:

· Number of competitors (maximum 6 men and 6 women)· Number of relay teams (maximum 2 male and 2 female teams)· Number of offi cials (maximum 4)· Team leaders’ details· Accommodation requirements (category A, B, C) · Participation in the training camp (30th June–7th July 2012)· Dates of arrival and departure

The fi nal entries with the names of competitors and offi cials must be sent to the organizers not later than by June 20, 2012.

The entry form for fi nal entries will be enclosed in Bulletin 3.

09. Event Centre

JWOC 2012 Event centre will be situated in the student campus of Technical University Košice.

10. Transport

Košice is easy to reach by all ways of transport. There is an international airport, big railway and bus stations with many international direct train and coach connections.

On request, transport can be organise for teams from and to airport Košice and also from and to others the nearest international airports, which are at Poprad and Budapest.

Transport between accommodation and arenas will be provided for all competitors and offi cials and is covered by the entry fee. Teams are allowed to organize their own transport to and from arenas but no discount on the entry fee will be given.All competitors are required to use the offi cial transport from the accommodation to the start area.

11. Accommodation and Board

Main accommodation for participants will be provided in students hostel at Nemcovej street 1 in Košice. Boarding will be provided in student canteen. During competition the lunches will be served in the fi nish areas.

14. Embargoed Areas and Competition Areas

With reference to the IOF Competiton Rules (article 26.6), the indicated areas are embargoed. It is prohibited to enter these areas for potential team members, leaders and others, who through the knowledge of the terrain could infl uence results of the JWOC competition. However, paved public roads passing through the area may be used.

There is also the following exception for area No. 1: It is allowed to stay in the city centre of Košice, but it is prohibited to organize orienteering sessions, testing routes etc. in this area.

Training camps

17. Terrain Description

Sprint

The centre of old town with shops and restaurants and city parks, a fl at area between 205 to 210 m above sea level. All roads and pavements in the city are made of asphalt or paving-stones, path in the park are sandy or earthy. Area in the old town is a combination of narrow streets, squares and passages.

Long

Karst terrain with big depressions, between 510 to 610 m above sea level. At the slopes of depressions there are rocky fi elds and also cliffs with height to 3 meters. In the terrain there are several abysses originaiting from erosian of karst terrain. Deciduous forest mostly, mixed in some parts. The part of terrain is semiopen or open area with changing runnibility and visibility. In part of terrain runnibility and visibility is signifi cantly reduced.

Middle Q+F

Areas between 360 to 630 m above see level, rich of terrain details originating from slides and erosion of terrain. Appearance of marshes and stones are typical for this areas. Deciduous forest mostly, runnibility and visibility mostly very good. Middle numerous of forest roads and paths.

Relay

Typical continental terrain between 490 to 630 m above see level with some parts rich of erosion gullies. Deciduous or mixed forest, runnibility and visibility mostly good. Middle numerous of forest roads and paths.

19. Punching and Time-keeping System

Sportident punching system will be used in all JWOC 2012 competitions. All competitors will receive SI cards from the organizers.

Electronic start gate will be used for Sprint race.

20. Clothing

There are no regulations applying to runners concerning the type of clothing they choose to wear. But organizers recommend to use long trousers for Long distance, Middle distance and Relay.

It is forbidden to use shoes with spikes in sprint competition. Organizers recommend to use shoes for tracks.

21. Anti-doping Code

Doping is forbidden: „think positive - test negative“.All competitors shall follow „The rules of the Anti-Doping code“.

22. Health Services

Organizer will coordinate healthcare services for participants. Healthcare services will be provided at the assembly areas of the competitions and in Košice. Each Federation is responsible for insurance of all their members.

23. Weather

It is usually sunny in the July around Košice with moderate temperature 24ºC. It is cloudy sometime also. We can wait temperatures from 20ºC to 30ºC during JWOC. There is possibility of thunderstorms in afternoon hours also.

24. Media

We welcome all media representatives at the JWOC 2012. Media representatives can receive information at the address: info@jwoc2012.sk.

Press centre will be open at the Event Centre throughout the whole event. Copy machine, internet and phone connection will be available. We are ready to arrange accommodation for journalists in Košice according to their wishes. In case of an interest please send your entry to the address info@jwoc2012.sk

25. Visas

According to the current regulations, citizens of the following countries must obtain a visa in order to enter the Slovakia:Belarus, Columbia, Cuba, China, Chinese Taipei, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, North Korea, Macedonia, Mongolia, Moldova, Pakistan, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine.

Visas have to be applied for at your nearest Slovak Embassy.

Please note that conditions of entry to the Slovakia can change and all JWOC participants are advised to keep abreast of the current situation by consulting their local Slovak Embassy - see the website: www.foreign.gov.sk.

26. Public event

4-days event „Slovak Karst Cup“ will be organized as side event to JWOC 2012. The same competition areas and maps will be used as for JWOC.
