With their large size, meaningful subject, exceptional quality of painting and continuous composition, these two vases oer an outstanding example of Yongzheng porcelain and appear to have no comparison in recorded collections. Named the Vases of the ‘Hundred Treasures’ after their surface decorations of precious antiques, potted owers and furtive animals, they represent three signicant aesthetic trends of the global 18th century: illusionism, antiquarianism and auspicious symbolism.

ROCKS

Rocks (shi 石 or shou 壽) are traditional symbols of longevity on account of their natural properties, and provide added wishes for achieving an advanced age. Rocks of remarkable beauty were kept by scholars in their gardens or on tables, and were admired as miniature mountains. Rocks and pebbles are also occasionally named ‘longevity stones’ due to their toughness, which is alluded to in an expression that equates longevity as being made of ‘metal and stone’ (jin shi chang shou 金石長壽).

The combination of peonies (fuguihua 富貴花) and ‘scholars’ rocks’ (gongshi 供石, or shangshi 赏石) expresses a wish for longevity and a ‘long and prosperous’ life (chang ming fugui 長命富貴).14
