    INRODUCION

Te baroque letters are important source or te istoryo science and karst in particular. In act, tey are some-times te only baroque sources available because at tosetimes te printed publications were not suc necessarypart o te researc as tey are nowadays. Kircers cor-

respondence kept at Roman Arcive o te PonticiaUniversit Gregoriana APUG contains 2291 letters o763 writers distributed at 14 olios. Almost one tirdo te correspondents were Jesuits. We knew some o

te letters contained inormation about Cerknica Lakewic Kircer never visited personally but nevertelessdescribed as one o its rst scientic researcers. We sus-pected tat e ad Carniolan inormers and te guessproved to be a true one. We examined all letters mailed

to Kircer rom Carniola or Gorica, and also te letterso people connected wit tose areas. We are appy toreport tat at least some success was obtained.

At tattime e did not write to Kircer, wo was just beginningis ascent to ame. During is tird and nal stay at Lju-

bljana Wilpenoer mailed several letters to KircersRome (Gramatowski & Rebernik, 2001, 113, 136; Do-linar, 1976, 186). Tose documents are o greatest inter-est or tis study. At least one o Wilpenoers Ljubljanaletters went troug Venice and got a mark rancise oVenice.

Wilpenoer was a novice at Brno. He studied pi-losopy and teology at Graz between 1616 and 1625.On June 29, 1635 e gave is ourt mobility vows, bute never lef is omeland or missions and stayed atHabsburg domains. In 1628 e taugt logic at Graz andbecame te Viennese College conessor 1629-1631. In1640 and 1641 e ad similar unction at Ljubljana Col-lege. Later e became superior at Varadin 1642-1643,preect at Ljubljana 1644-1648, and superior at Sopron

1649. In 1651 e was at Vienna and next year e be-came te conessor o Jaurin Raab bisop. He inormedKircer about Cerknica Lake penomena during is stayat Ljubljana College. He was an administrator, scribe(scritor), counsellor, and preect o te Ljubljana Jesuitcurc and stayed at Ljubljana almost or two decadesbetween 1653 and 1671 Lukcs, 1982, 789-790.

Wilpenoer listed te Carniolan local natural cu-riosities and Kircer in act used is report or is owndescription o Carniola. Wilpenoer took care or te

distribution o is Jesuit-ellow Kircers books amongCarniolans, mostly on demand o te Governor GeneralCount Vol Engelbert Auersperg. Immediately afer te

mundus Subterranei printing 1657 e reported on Oc-tober 24, 1658 tat te Count, our Governor wised toget te item. In act, Vols librarian and personal riendJanez Ludvik Scnleben * 1618 Ljubljana; SJ October28, 1635 Vienna-1654; 1681 marked Vols bookplateat is copy o te amous Kircers mundus Subterraneiduring te same year 1658. Somewat later Scnlebenbecame rater prolic researcer o Cerknica Lake and

publised is opinions just beore e died 1680-1681.He collected te library o is own and bequeated isbooks to te Ljubljana Jesuits at is last will.

Te readers also expected similar Kircers workmundus mediterranes because Kircer announced ewould publis it. It was never put at te limeligt, at leastnot under tat title. In act, te mundus mediterranescase seems to be a part o te very clever politics. Kircerpaved is road to ame by adding index o is publisedand would-be publised books at te end o is earlyworks. Several o tem were never printed, but readers

expected tem anyway. Just by reading te titles and de-scriptions o is planned works everybody was won-dering ow clever and erudite man Kircer must be. TeBaroque autors actually knew very well ow to sell teirbooks and we could learn a lot rom teir examples.

In addition Wilpenoer brougt previously un-

known acts about karst to Kircers attention. InmundusKircer did not mention Idrija Mine or Cerknica Lakeyet, altoug at te paragrap Aline hydraulice de-scribed waters at Alps region wit silver and oter min-erals beneat te mountains (Kircer, 1657, 185-186). Hecareully described Danube River (Kircer, 1657, 162)and properties o quicksilver (Kircer, 1657, 202) butailed to mention amous Idria mercury mine.

Wilpenoer reported on te mercury mine wit-out mentioning te city o Idrija. He also described te

vein o ossil silver and cited te Jesuit Casatis workconnected wit mining. Wilpenoer put special con-

cern on te lake near te town named Cerknica. Telake altogeter sank to enable plouging o te driedelds and even unting. Afer a wile te lake reappearedagain and ooded te elds wit te water and s, ac-cording to Wilpenoers report.

Eleven years later on October 23, 1669 Wilpeno-er again wrote rom Ljubljana to Kircers Rome witoutmentioning any karst penomena. A week later e wrotea new letter (November 28, 1669) wit last lines some-wat compressed to t te single page. He mentionedtwo parts o KircersArs magna sciendi seu cobinatori-ca under te sortened titleArs cobinatorica. Tat book

again pleased very muc te Count is Eminence LandGovernor Vol Auersperg. In te meanwile Vol waspromoted to a iger status o emperors secret counsel-lor (1660) and consequently got te prestigious title isEminence (Mol, 1937, 50). Vol certainly got KircersbookArs cobinatorica too, and Scnleben selved itat te class o linguistics. Certainly, te words o tebaroque times did not always ave te meaning we as-cribe to tem today. At te ront page bookplates o treeoter Kircers books Scnleben wrote a note: autors(Kircers) present.Ars cobinatorica andmundus Sub-terranei were not among tem. Vol certainly ave to buy

some o is books as ad all ordinary mortals, even i ewas te Carniolan Governor.Kircer continued Frisclins researc o Carniola

subterranean waters (Habe, Kranjc, 1981, 20-21; Koroec,1967, 12) witout ever seeing te penomena e de-scribed. Kircers museum at Rome was in act te Jesuitcollection o all world curiosities and Carniolan ones justt tere. Already beore Wilpenoers notes Kircerreceived some oter inormation about Carniolan pe-culiarities ocusing on Idrija Mercury Mine. Kircersinormer was very young Klagenurt Jesuit Sigismond

Siserius (* May 1, 1636 Klagenurt; SJ; December 29,1693 Vienna). Kircer publised Siserius letters as ewas used to do wit oter ellow Jesuits reports, altouge eventually did not care to publis Wilpenoers con-tributions. Siserius work was put at te limeligt as teappendix o rst edition o Kircers subterranean bookunder te title Eistola ad R.p. Kircheru, in qua hydriasive odina argenti vivi in Carniola describitur (Kircer,1657, 2: 173). Wilpenoer certainly read te item at Au-

erspergs Ljubljana library and decided to improve Kirc-ers understanding o te penomena wit is own IdrijaMine and Cerknica Lake descriptions. Kircer eventuallyused te new data acquired rom Wilpenoers letter orismundus Subterraneus (Kircer, 1678, book 9, part 2,paragrap 7).

From te early little booklet later publised as teaddenda to Kircers outer space trip, te tird printingomundus (1678) wit Cerknica Lake description avegrown up to nearly tousand pages o te great olioormat. Its weigt is almost 5 kg! Te book was not just

eavy, it was considered to be te most important cavesand underground waters baroque researc. Kircer putat te limeligt early description o te caves Antiparosat te middle o Greek Kiklads Kyklads Islands sout-east o Atens, Gar Kebir o Tunis, Dracenle nearMixnitz souteast o Styrian Bruck on Mur River, and,

least but not last, te Cerknica Lake. He ounded temodern ydrology o karst and connected te subterra-nean springs wit seas and precipitations.

In 1669 Englisman Edward Brown * 1642; 1708continued Kircers Cerknica Lake researc on beal ote London Royal Society. Browns mistakes stimulatedte development o Valvasors own opinions and ideascrowned wit Valvasors ambitious ellection at te sameRoyal Society as its rst and so ar te only ellow romCarniola on December 14, 1687. Former Jesuit Scnle-ben and Valvasor modied Kircers explanation o uddsValvasor, 1689, 1: 626, 630, and Valvasor bougt almost

all Kircers works including mundus. During Kircerslietime E.G. Kappelius 1672, 1685 described CerknicaLake s and elds at Hamburg Journal Koroec, 1967,13 and paved te way or te researc o local autori-ties, namely te Prince Janez Vajkard Auersperg.

Te Prince Janez Vajkard Auersperg was aware o teLeyden Proessor Pilippus Cluverius (Cluverij, * 1580Danzig; 1622) description o Postojna Cave (1623) as abig cave wit noisy river at ollow ill near Ljubljana.

Janez broter Vol ad at least our Cluverius items atrst or early editions (1619, 1624, 1631, and 1653) boundinto tree volumes. Five Cluverius works were on saleat Ljubljana and Valvasor eventually bougt all o temor is Bogenperg library (Sotebys, 1982, 30-31; Mayr,1678, 7172; Valvasor & Magi, 1995, 219-220).

Soon afer is last letter mailed to Kircer, te PrinceJanez Vajkard Auersperg used ropes to descend one o ispeasants-sermen beneat one oot tick Postojna Cavenatural bridge (1673). Janez ownersip o te Postoj-na area stimulated is curiosity wic culminated aferreading Culverius and Kircers books e inerited rom

is recently deceased broter Vol. Janez became one ote rst systematic researcers o Postojna Cave subter-ranean ora and auna. Kircer would certainly love toread is results, but no Janez letters eventually writtenafer 1671 were preserved.

Just beore Kircer died, Valvasor (1679) tried toupgrade te discoveries o is model Prince Janez, but ewas eventually not quite successul. Valvasor discoveredte Auerspergs subject-serman wo ormerly brougtsome s rom subterranean o Postojna Cave. Te poorold ellow was still alive and in pretty good ealt. CONCLUSION

Te Jesuits rom Carniola inormed Kircer about teCerknica Lake karst penomena. Kircer was consideredan expert in several elds, but e did not widely travelafer is young years. His books were in act te com-pilation o letters e received rom is ellow Jesuits allover te world, and wit tat in mind we claimed tat
