    In common with other bast fibres, jute has been usedsince prehistoric times. The aim is to emphasize ontextile development possibilities of jute fibres. Moderndevelopments have made it possible to spin fine and

    regular yarns of upto 4lbs(138tex). Such yarns andfabrics made from them can now be subjected to alltypes of dyeing, printing and finishes. With their lowcost and exceptional properties, the jute fibres are

    considered an attractive material for textile as well asnon-textile applications. In this article a concise reviewof property, application and modern developments inprocessing of jute fibres will be discussed.

    Jute is the common name given to fibres extracted from thestems of plants belonging to the botanical genuscorchorus. it is a strong fibre, its low extensibility resultsin stiff, non stretchy fabric.

    Good sheen and lustre

    Inelasticity and dimensional stability

    Thermal insulation Bulk

    Unique texture

    Raw and natural look appreciated by western consumers

    Environment friendly

    y Jute can be blended with viscose staple fibre,polypropylene,wool.

    y Dyeing is satisfactory and reaches a light fastness of 5+ andwashing fastness of 4+.

    y Fabrics can be shrink-resisted, crease resisted, flameretarded, stiffened, softened, woollenised.

    y Union fabrics of jute/cotton with cotton yarn in warp andjute in weft form an important item in the area of jute

    diversified products such as in paper pulp, geo textiles,carpets, consumer items( luggage), decoratives( furnishingfabrics)

    y Properly finished and printed fabrics can also be used as

    dress material and for other apparel uses in colder climates.

    y Blended yarns of jute/PP after woollenisation have anappearance similar to wool and they have equally good thermalinsulation properties. It is possible to spin these blended yarns tofiner counts than 100% jute. Such yarns would be better than100% wool in many respects like washability and durability. Also

    they would be relatively inexpensive.y Jute/PP yarns should also have considerable abrasion resistance

    and even some resilience and as carpet face yarns they could finda substantial outlet.

    y Jute/viscose yarns will also enable the production of finer yarns.Viscose is a versatile fibre and blending with jute results in good

    quality yarn , comparable to raw silk, in sheen and look. Theseyarns could also be knitted and would produce an attractivehand- or machine woven fabrics which would increase the size ofthe market open to jute as they would be less expensive than

    jute-cotton blends.

    y Jute geo textiles also have potential for newer applicationsother than soil erosion and in some cases are already beingused for these purposes like:Reinforcement in unpavedroads, rural roads, landscaping, etc.

    a) Reinforcement fabric during the construction ofroadwaysb) Vertical wick drains to accelerate drainage of water in

    soils.
