1. CRIMINAL JUSTICE UPDATEChair: Jodie Blackstock, Director of Criminal Justice Policy, JUSTICE

Felicity Gerry QC, 36 Bedford RowJohn Cooper QC, 25 Bedford Row

Covering the latest statutory and case-law developments, this session will consider human rights as they pertain to the criminal trial. From new court fees to costs and access to justice, to the legitimacy of joint enterprise, ‘modern slavery’ and the globalisation of crime, we will discuss the current and future issues facing fair trial and its associated protections.

2. EQUALITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS UPDATEChair: Professor Anna Lawson, University of Leeds, Equality and Human Rights Commission, Disability Committee

Karon Monaghan QC, Matrix Chambers Schona Jolly, Cloisters

Increased fees and procedural changes in the last Parliament saw discrimination claims in the Employment Tribunal drop by up to 80%. Yet, the Equality Act 2010 continued to play a significant role in many of the key public law challenges of the past 5 years. Beyond fees, cuts and changes to legal aid, our panel discuss the key cases of the past 12 months for practice in equality law.

3. HUMAN RIGHTS, IMMIGRATION AND ASYLUM UPDATEChair: Alison Harvey, Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association

Judith Farbey QC, Doughty Street Chambers Colin Yeo, Garden Court Chambers

This year saw both judges and our politicians grapple with immigration at the forefront of the human rights debate. Join us to discuss essential cases from the past 12 months, the impact of the Immigration Act 2014 and the new Immigration Bill . Explore the latest key developments in detention without trial, private and family life and appeals, from both domestic courts and Strasbourg.

4. JUDICIAL REVIEW AND HUMAN RIGHTS UPDATEChair: Angela Patrick, Director of Human Rights Policy, JUSTICE

Helen Mountfield QC, Matrix ChambersJonathan Swift QC, 11KBWStephen Cragg QC, Monckton Chambers

5. CHARTER OR COVENTION: THE LATEST FROM EUROPEChair: Deba Das, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer

Marie Demetriou QC, Brick Court ChambersDeirdre Fottrell QC, 1 Garden Court

Europe has been at the heart of much political and legal discussion during this election year. Human rights practitioners regularly ask: can Europe help my client?

Leading practitioners before the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Humn Rights cover the key cases from the past year, focusing particularly on practice points for busy practitioners.

6. PRICACY, SECURITY AND SURVELLANCEChair: David Anderson QC, Brick Court Chambers

Rosa Curling, Leigh DayMartin Chamberlain QC, Brick Court ChambersProfessor Sir David Omand, Kings College London

Security challenges raise perennial questions about the protection of human rights. As ‘Snowden’ litigation continues in Strasbourg and each of the main political parties commit to revisit effectiveness and legality of the underlying legislative framework in the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (‘RIPA’), our speakers discuss the human rights issues in shaping a surveillance framework for a digital age.

16.15 PLENARY DEBATEChair: Andrea Coomber, Director, JUSTICE

Sir Louis Blom-Cooper QC, Doughty Street ChambersJoanna Cherry QC MPLord Falconer QC, Shadow Lord ChancellorCarl Gardner, Head of Legal BlogAlison Gerry, Doughty Street Chambers, Chair, Human Rights Lawyers AssociationLord Lester of Herne Hill QC

We have invited the Ministry of Justice to send a representative to join the discussion.

Since 2010, political debate has chewed over the future of the Human Rights Act 1998, the European Convention on Human Rights and the UK’s relationship with the European Court of Human Rights. This year saw our commitment to the legal protection of human rights in the ECHR and the Human Rights Act 1998 in the balance at the ballot box. The Queen’s Speech saw a commitment from the Government to consider replacing the Act with a British Bill of Rights.

Join us to debate “What next for human rights?”
