DESCRIPTION

A local paper article discovered in the Herne Bay Library archives has provided the inspiration for the celebration of International Women’s Day in Herne Bay, organized by Beach Creative in partnership with Herne Bay High School and key members of other local groups. The article, dated 30 June 1910, provides a vivid description of a visit to Herne Bay Town Hall by prominent suffragette Christabel Pankhurst as part of her countrywide tour to campaign for votes for women. In tribute, a march will take place on Saturday 12 March at 2pm, in full Edwardian dress starting from the HSBC bank, the site of the old Town Hall, and moving west down the High Street, turning left into Beach Street, convening at Beach Creative for speeches and performances. Young people studying drama and dance at Herne Bay High School will be performing in the parade. A week of assemblies will take place in school celebrating International women's day
