Charity and Synagogue

Matt. 6:2Jesus cautions his followers not to ‘trumpet’ their gifts as do the hypocrites in the synagogues and streets that they may be praised by men.

Torah Synagogue Reading

Luke 4:16–22: And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the Sabbath day. And he stood up to read; and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written…

Acts 13:14–15 – But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and sat down. And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them

Acts 15:21 - For Moses of old time has in every city those that preach him, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day.

Synagogue Sermon

Jesus sat as he preached in Nazareth synagogue Paul stood as he preached in Antioch’s synagogue in Pisidia

Is this a custom change for a preacher between the early and mid 1st century? Or perhaps this marked a difference in practices of delivery between Judaea and the Diaspora?

Synagogue Prayer I

Matt. 6:5 - And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners, that they may be seen.

Matthew was not being critical of communal prayer in synagogues, but of the ostentatious display of piety by individuals.

Acts 3:1- Healing the Lame Beggar: One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer--at three in the afternoon.

Synagogue Prayer II

Can’t understand Acts 3:1 without Daniel 6:10 and Psalm 55:17. It was customary for Jews to pray 3 times a day and specific times were attached to these prayers.
