01 SiteAnalysis

Site analysis is an important preparation for architects

to understand where is the perfect location for there

design, what is the background of the site, how people

interact with the environment, the movement around

and how will the surrounding climate affect on the

design.

Concrete lawn is located in Parkville, Victoria and ispart of the University of Melbourne's Parkvillecampus. The site sits on the northern end of thecampus and currently links a number of universityfacilities including Union house and the newlyrefurbished Melbourne School of Design. Theprecinct provides an open space for staff andstudents and can be adapted for university eventssuch as carnivals or markets. Immediately the siteis other university buildings including Union house;the Raymond Priestly building; the BaldwinSpencer building; and the Melbourne School ofDesign.

Prior to settlement, the grounds were home to theindigenous Wurundjeri people. The Wurundjeriheld a close relationship to the site as they did withmuch of the Australian landscape and used the siteto undertake native practices such as burningtraditions and rituals that honoured the native trees.Since European settlement the reflection ofaboriginal culture on the site has largely beenerased

Post settlement the property was government oweduntil the University was granted the grounds inNovember 1853 (Tibbits, 2008). After the land wasgranted, the Quadrangle was the first structureerected on the campus in 1854 (Historical Campustour). Other developments surrounding the siteincluded Union House in 1863 (originally the site ofthe National Museum); the Raymond priestly in the1960's; later the Baldwin spencer building; andeventually the sun ribbon sculpture was installed in1982. In a broader context, the university has sincegrown to be Australia's highest ranked university(times higher education) and has approximately45,000 students.

Union Lawn, when granted to the university wasoriginally swamplands. Later in 1861 the swamplands were converted into an ornamental lake andin 1939 the lake was filled due to space restrictions(Johnson Wallis).

This site analysis focused on three timing 9am, 1pm, and

3 pm at Concrete Lawn between MSD, Union House,

Baldwin Spencer and Raymond Priestly. Architecture

site can be view in different mapping systems, for

analyzing Concrete Law we specifically analyze it’s

history, action, climate (temperature and shadow),

and movement.

Spatial composition means using the available

space in order to create a desired environment.

Spatial Composition can be form in different ways,

one simple way to form is through Frame and Grid.

A frame is regularly considered as the key building

piece of conventional innovator plan. At its least

difficult a frame is an incompletely encasing 3 di-

mensional shape generally included vertical and

level components that interface at intersections.

This spatial composition design is form by five different rectangular shape.

This design start from a simple cube frame with out any panel, by adding

one panel each during the making process it creates both open system

and enclosure system, and by placing the rectangular shape in each

other and above each other it helps create a different level of arrange-

ment idea. Moreover the different level stick at the side of the bottom

rectangular box are added as a decoration.

03 Landforming

PAGE 3

Thinking of Extrusions and Subtraction I thought of simple mathematics X-

axis and Y-axis. The flat surface in the design is seen as x-axis on x-y graph-

ic, therefore any design above is positive (extrusion) anything below is

negative (subtraction). The curve that go through the surface is inspired by

wave in the ocean, which naturally flows up and down. The symmetrical

cutting that goes up and down represent but extrusion and subtraction.

Landforming, can be consider as lanscape design, when

we think of landscape we thought of surface or ground,

however ground is not a blank/static surface but rather

an active part of any design; landscape design can be

think of two different simple design technique, which is

“Extrusions” and “Subtraction”. Extrusion can be thought

of mountain folding, adding, or pull, and subtraction can

me view as void, pushing, negative, or displacement.

Inspiration

This design is base on a simple square geometric and

adding repetition stick around the structure to cre-

ate a Smooth combination between the two main

design elements, which is similar to my design with a

basic cube frame an adding the elements from my

Landforming design.

Assemblage is a compositional strategy to combine dispa-

rate formal conditions together. In this assemblage I brought

the design of spatial composition and landforming together

with a specific method - Smoothing. The method of smooth-

ing is basically blending or merging together without obvious

visual connecting. I achieve this method by using the curv-

ing elements from landforming and curve around one of the

cube frame from spatial composition to create a soft sur-

face. Moreover to link to concept of landforming I expend

the curve from the frame to the area to create a smoothing

flowing feeling.

Collage05Narrative

06Superimposi-tion

PAGE 5

A concept is a versatile and element set of authorita-

tive criteria. concept freely flags how space, shape, and

“script” (narrative) cross or are consolidated into a hy-

bridized and localizable arrangement. By using the nar-

rative I created a collage that visualized the concept of

“Meeting” for the design later on.

Superimposition is a method of “overlay” whereby self-

governing or separated frameworks are united and

layered to shape one particular framework. The con-

sequence of such an uncompromising system regularly

yields fascinating and unanticipated impacts/associa-

tions. This technique combined the concept of the de-

sign, site and design itself together to aim a view of the

later on design

Superimposition show how the concept apply on the site In

my design I specifically place the design on the left hand

side of the site, this part of the site has extreme sunlight and

shadow during the day, which show the extreme between

the two world in the narrative. Moreover from the collage

the black and white ruled world are place on the tree part

which represent the higher world and the college are cut

in organized shape and place in specific order, for the cre-

ative world it;is place in the open space on the site and cut

in irregular shape.

In this world only black and white exist, each levels are individu-

als there’s no link between, they have no though, no emotion

and we belongs to neither she nor he, we follow rules back and

forth the only way to create change is to take risk jump down

the level and meet the next level. While jumping down chemi-

cal reaction happened your body explode and reform when

you meet another individual, colors, new items creates and we

know how we are.

There are numerous ways in which plan

components meet to deliver specific envi-

ronment or character of space. Synthesis,

scale, materiality, light and others can be

joined into outline plans to make specific in-

clinations, feelings, and faculties. These test

qualities assume a key part in the way indi-

viduals see and EXPERIENCE space.

Base on Superimposition, Experience show a section draw-

ing of if gives how people interact with the design, the ma-

terial usage and the surrounding environment also show

the concept of the narrative apply on the main design

concept, which is the black and white stair from the ruled

world represent the stair from the left side and the firework

collage represented the creative world that represented

by the free flow curve.

To escape from what we are living, the way we are living, the ordinary life, the regu-

lar life, we have to have the courage to step out, to set out of our comfort zone,

to leave what we used to be like, and to meet new people. Meeting new people

create new thinking, new idea and a new style of living.

Serpentine Pavilion

Architect: Sou Fujimoto

Location: Hyde Park, London

The design process of the final project draw thought the whole semes-

ter, from the site analysis where the project should locate on the con-

crete lawn is where the spot have the most extreme light and shadow

during the day and processing through the assemblage and combing

the narrative to a new design.

The Two World design was inspire from Serpentine Pavilion, which is a multi-

purpose social space, where the walls, seating and roof are made of the

same steel cubes, where people can interact with the design, in The Two

World design I mainly focus on people’s interaction with the design and

how it creates a meeting space. The main form of the Serpentine Pavilion

is using simultaneous and repeating of steel bar to form a space ,which my

design - The Two world each panel for each level are in a same shape but

in different size that helps create the cure shape beside.

For the final design of The Two

World I chosen Bamboo as the

main material due to it is envi-

ronmental friendly , flexible for

the slides, light color coding,

light easy to layer
